The Star Wing - or, as known to those of us who grew up playing the X-wing vs TIE Fighter games, the Assault Gunboat - always struck me as the Empire's answer to the Y-wing. It was often your second choice of an Imperial starfighter if you couldn't have a TIE Defender.
Assault Gunboat was a beast. Honestly, if it wasn't a TIE Defender or Missile Boat, it was my preferred ride. Decently fast, as maneuverable as an X-Wing, and very durable. And an amazing payload.
I'd say any of the starfighters with ion cannons were OP in the X-wing/Tie Fighter games. Taking down the shields and then outright disabling an entire capital ship with ion cannons so that it could be slowly turned into slab...
I will concede that the Missile Boat was not one of my favorites, but I do not think it was ever a bad one. It just did not mesh with me. That said, I still unleashed hell with it, so I have no qualms about anyone repping it. For me, my tier list went as follows (and some of these choices, many will probably agree with for the most part): 1) TIE Defender 2) Assault Gunboat 3-4) TIE Advanced/Avenger & Missile Boat (depends on the mission) 5) TIE Interceptor 6-7) TIE Fighter & TIE Bomber (depends on the enemies present) I have no problems if anyone else's list is different, and I have no reason to disagree with your placements. This is simply mine.
Theirs tons of lesser known Imperial Fighters and Gunships, or transports. I remember Eckhartsladder comparison video about all star wars transports. He claimed the Empires had the weakest one, which is funny because most the Imperial Dropships he neglected to mention are more powerful than the other factions.
@@jamesedington3153 in the case of the Imperial ones in that review, it wasn't, he could have used the Lambda Shuttle or the Sentinel Dropship, both very popular and in the Original trilogy, but instead he used an Imperial Policing craft.
The one I would have added to this list was the Cygnus Spaceworks produced, Thrawn designed, Imperial Missile Boat. It was designed as a direct counter measure to potentially stolen, or rogue, TIE Defenders and other high maneuverability fighters.
Every time I heard of the TIE-Defenders, it always reminded of why the second Death Star is a big mistake! If Palpatine wanted to feel near but yet not too far from his peoples, a fleet of Star Destroyers of his own is the best way to do, which is exactly what he did in the last movie of the Sequel Trilogy. Yes, I find that make sense because the second Dearth Star is not!
The starwing wasn't Cygnus's only fighter. They also had the semi-experimental missile boat (What you get when you ask how many missiles and torpedoes can you fit onto a modified starwing design and what kind of warheads you want, torpedoes or missiles, and the answer is yes).

I think the only rebel/new republic ship that comes close in capabilities is the K-wing (coincidentally or not coincidentally, the k-wing uses technology that first appeared on the missile boat, the SLAM system). However, the K-wing is roughly at least three times the size of the missile boat (though in fairness, this is partly due to it being like the star fortress if the star fortress was redesigned to actually be useful, using multiple crew members along with defensive (and offensive, one was actually a small turbolaser) turrets while having flexible payload options), has no hyperdrive, and did not appear until at least 5 years (probably more like at least 10) after the missile boat was used in combat.
I really like the Star Wing. It was the one Imperial ship that the Rebellion or New Republic really could have used. One of its best features was that it could launch all of its missiles at once, which would have been great for hit and run attacks against capital ships. I'm glad the Empire didn't appreciate this potential, a few squadrons in the hands of well trained pilots could have created a lot of headaches for the New Republic.
I love that the Alpha Class Xg-1 Star Wing, one of the best starfighters in the franchise in design and concept, got TWO entries on this list, before and after the ad,
The Tie Phantom, and the Rebel Alliances' efforts to destroy it, were the main plot line of the 90s video game for PC: "Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2". There is a level in which you have to fight other Tie Phantoms, and it is known for being one of the most difficult levels in the game.
Great seeing the Assault Gunboat, my fave non-TIE imperial starfighter! But surprised to not see the Missile Boat. Now that ship was OP, forget the pew-pew laser cannon, and divert the energy from it to your engines and shields, and spam the SLAM and the 80 concussion missiles into anything with a "Z" prefix in it's name or a Rebel Red!
I saw that Star Wing and I thought "man, I have something just like that in No Man's Sky". That game has a lot of individual ship components modeled after designs from SW. Off the top of my head I can recall the nose/cockpit of an X-wing & Y-wing as well, TIE pylons, etc. There are also vaguely star destroyer esque freighter designs. The rest of the components get pretty diverse, making for some interesting ship combinations to find in the wild. Anyway, back to the Star Wing. I've seen designs pop up that look almost exactly like it. The one I keep in my stable has I think 7 wings instead of 5, and the front half of an X-wing.
Well, when it comes to space, i think there are some limited designs. Triangles are great shapes as they have a very sturdy property and then you add engines on a long side less mass and the taper and turning yeah
It's not strictly Imperial, but there are the Preybird starfighters the Imperial Remnant began adopting in Legends when their shipyards couldn't keep up with demand for TIEs alongside their commitments for other shipbuilding and upkeep projects. As a tangent from that, it might be good to compare starfighter doctrines between the various factions. The Imperial Navy gets a lot of grief about "LOL no shields and no hyperdrive", but there must be reasons beyond "blame it on Palpatine" for why they did things. After all, they didn't lack for fighter pilot recruits, so they can't have been _that_ bad, or else no one would sign up for such an elite MOS.
Indeed, like the Claw-Craft, the perfect mix of Chiss and Imperial tech :) As for ships, the Hapes Nova-Class and the Battle-Dragon are very nice - I love that they had to work around not having the latest turbo-laser-tech and it gave them a ship that could easily take on Stardestroyers :)
Am I the only one that thought the Lambda Class Shuttle was a pretty dumb choice especially for troop transport? Let's pick a ship that has to wait to fold in its wings to land as a troop transport.
To be fair, both the Lambda Class and the bigger Sentinel Class troop shuttle fold up their wings while they are landing, so it's not much different than extending landing gear or dropping the boarding ramp and the additional lift in atmosphere from the large wing surface is probably worth the extra mechanical complexity, plus it makes them easier to store on capital ships (like carrier planes with folding wings).
Would have stuck the TIE Brute in there over the V Wing, we've seen that one quite a bit now with The Bad Batch and ROTS. Also, I only recently discovered the Brute is not just a TIE/Ln with extra guns, it's frikin huge!
Not very well "advertised" in the first EaW game, since the pirate faction was unplayable, but then FoC came out and was available for the Zann Consortium faction

Missile Boat was definitely among the rarest if not the ACTUAL rarest. Although given it's operating life and the fact they were all recalled just before Endor also meant practically nobody knew they even existed. Where Palpatine had them stored is unknown.
Since TIE fighters were confirmed to have been used within the week of the declaration of a new order, I think it’s fair to assume they were also used by the galactic republic in the final year of the Clone War. So my question is, what would a Republic TIE look like, and how would it fit in with their fleet composition?
The Assault Gunboat is *more* maneuverable than an X-Wing, accelerates nearly as fast as an A-Wing, and has a hull rating just under that of the Y-Wing.
Starwing matched x-wing in maneuverability dude. In legends we had the DPF rating, X-wing had 75, Starwing had 78. It was slower though but more heavily shielded (2 times the shield strength of an x-wing) and more heavily armored as well. It was a beast and had the unique ability to shoot all of it's ordnance in one devastating attack. Imagine going against it and seeing 12 concussion missiles shoot out an once, shit in pants in seconds
OH-MY-DOG!!! I played "Rebel Assault II" on my step-son's computer, which engraved the V-38 Phantom on my psyche. I actually stole one of those in the game and attacked both the manufacturing base and Darth Vader's star destroyer (this was before he had the Executor). Of all the Imperial starfighters I've seen, this is the one I've wanted most! This was an awesome ship even without the cloaking device!
Starwing was an excellent option against the heavier rebel fighters and small capital ships. The issue was more the Empire being paranoid against pilots defecting and resulted in small cheap fighters with no hyperdrive. A short term saving with long term costs in fighter pilots lost.
YOOOO! My inner child is _SO HAPPY_ to see the TIE Phantom included on this list! Rebel Assault 2 was a huge part of my childhood (also the reason why I came to love the B-Wing) and the TIE Phantom was always one of my favourite Star Wars ships ever. (it's like the Empire's version of the Klingon Bird of Prey, except the size of a fighter) Also, out of all these ships presented, _I gotta say, the Starwing is probably my favourite design by far!_ As far as gunships/bombers go, the TIE Punisher is probably miles better and I do love that ship as well, but the very distinct appearence of the Starwing compared to the usual TIE line of fighters gives a good feeling of variety. Also, its design is just awesome, it's like Star Wars took inspiration from Star Fox and tried to create a ship of a similar design. *Love it.* Would definitelly want to own one if I lived in that universe.
the "Starwing" or Gunboat as i know it from tie fighter is the equifalent of the rebel y-wing if the empire had only gunboats instad off tie and intercepter they had one right from the beginn what would lead that the rebels had used small ships with many small arms, so many more cv90s
I would love to see a lot of these ships like we saw the TIE defender in Rebels. I’d especially like to see the I-7 Howlrunner in live action or even in an animated series or movie.
The SG1 Starwing was named Assault Gunboat in the TIE Fightergame, is was my favorite fighter in that game. It also had the Missile Boat, whitch unfortunatly is not innthis list.
The Phantom is my favorite Imperial fighter, followed by the Defender. These are a proper recon ship and I adore them for it. Throw a couple of them in a Raider and you have a proper spec-ops attack group. Heck you could have the raider drop out of hyperspace on routine patrol, it drops a couple of cloaked phantoms using inhertia, like turing of ag in the hangar, give them a push and then jumps out on its way just part of the routine, the Phantoms wait cloaked and then act when the time is right. Heck you could incorporate that stealth on a Raider. The unusual part of the phantom is it is very small and unusual to have a cloak on a ship that size as I recall in rebel assault 2 they said it shouldnt be possible for a ship that size to have a cloak. Im fanguying i know. Much excited.
another rare starfighter used by the empire was the xm 3 nova wing starfighter also know as the missile boat this craft was a evolution of the xg 1 gunboat of cygnus space works this craft was comparable in performance to the tie defender but themost curious feature of this starfighter is that engeged enemy starfighters with concussion missiles insted of laser or ion cannons similar to the f4 phamtom on earth
The Skipray's variable geometry is actually kind of dumb. They put a wing structure with a big weapon in it in the firing arc of the dorsal turret. Sure, you only lose a couple of degrees of coverage, but it puts the blind spot directly aft, where a chasing foe would want to be to line up a shot into your drive.
Can we just not forget that the folding wings and any sort of “wings” would only be useful during atmospheric combat and that a purely vacuum fighter would have no need for these and it still annoys me to this day
"Cygnus's first and only Starfighter" We're not going to talk about the Cygnus Missleboat? Arguably the most powerful starfighter in the Imperial inventory and so limited only maybe 20 of them existed? The thing was specifically made to hunt down and destroy stolen TIE DEFENDERS and Avengers, lol.

The Assault Gunboat is *more* maneuverable than an X-Wing, accelerates nearly as fast as an A-Wing, and has a hull rating just under that of the Y-Wing.

Starwing matched x-wing in maneuverability dude. In legends we had the DPF rating, X-wing had 75, Starwing had 78. It was slower though but more heavily shielded (2 times the shield strength of an x-wing) and more heavily armored as well. It was a beast and had the unique ability to shoot all of it's ordnance in one devastating attack. Imagine going against it and seeing 12 concussion missiles shoot out an once, shit in pants in seconds

OH-MY-DOG!!! I played "Rebel Assault II" on my step-son's computer, which engraved the V-38 Phantom on my psyche. I actually stole one of those in the game and attacked both the manufacturing base and Darth Vader's star destroyer (this was before he had the Executor). Of all the Imperial starfighters I've seen, this is the one I've wanted most! This was an awesome ship even without the cloaking device!
Starwing was an excellent option against the heavier rebel fighters and small capital ships.
The issue was more the Empire being paranoid against pilots defecting and resulted in small cheap fighters with no hyperdrive.
A short term saving with long term costs in fighter pilots lost.
I mean, if they were REALLY concerned, they could have just put a remote self destruct in it. They did it for Tie Phantoms and Defenders.

Rebel Assault 2 was a huge part of my childhood (also the reason why I came to love the B-Wing) and the TIE Phantom was always one of my favourite Star Wars ships ever. (it's like the Empire's version of the Klingon Bird of Prey, except the size of a fighter)
Also, out of all these ships presented, _I gotta say, the Starwing is probably my favourite design by far!_
As far as gunships/bombers go, the TIE Punisher is probably miles better and I do love that ship as well, but the very distinct appearence of the Starwing compared to the usual TIE line of fighters gives a good feeling of variety.
Also, its design is just awesome, it's like Star Wars took inspiration from Star Fox and tried to create a ship of a similar design. *Love it.* Would definitelly want to own one if I lived in that universe.
the "Starwing" or Gunboat as i know it from tie fighter is the equifalent of the rebel y-wing if the empire had only gunboats instad off tie and intercepter they had one right from the beginn what would lead that the rebels had used small ships with many small arms, so many more cv90s
I would love to see a lot of these ships like we saw the TIE defender in Rebels. I’d especially like to see the I-7 Howlrunner in live action or even in an animated series or movie.
I know it's Legends now, but the Preybird used by the Imperial Remnant seemed like a decent fighter.

The SG1 Starwing was named Assault Gunboat in the TIE Fightergame, is was my favorite fighter in that game.
It also had the Missile Boat, whitch unfortunatly is not innthis list.

The Phantom is my favorite Imperial fighter, followed by the Defender. These are a proper recon ship and I adore them for it.
Throw a couple of them in a Raider and you have a proper spec-ops attack group. Heck you could have the raider drop out of hyperspace on routine patrol, it drops a couple of cloaked phantoms using inhertia, like turing of ag in the hangar, give them a push and then jumps out on its way just part of the routine, the Phantoms wait cloaked and then act when the time is right. Heck you could incorporate that stealth on a Raider. The unusual part of the phantom is it is very small and unusual to have a cloak on a ship that size as I recall in rebel assault 2 they said it shouldnt be possible for a ship that size to have a cloak.

The Skipray's variable geometry is actually kind of dumb. They put a wing structure with a big weapon in it in the firing arc of the dorsal turret.
Sure, you only lose a couple of degrees of coverage, but it puts the blind spot directly aft, where a chasing foe would want to be to line up a shot into your drive.
My god... The first ship is *uuugly*! Especially compared to the classic tie!
Can we just not forget that the folding wings and any sort of “wings” would only be useful during atmospheric combat and that a purely vacuum fighter would have no need for these and it still annoys me to this day
