I love this performance! I’m not dissing them in anyway, but what is funny about them singing Sweet Adeline? There clearly is something I’m not getting. Could someone explain it? It doesn’t seem like they were messing around with the lyrics of the song, but people were still laughing. Like I said, I’m not saying it isn’t funny. I absolutely love this performance, and am sure what they are doing is funny, I just don’t get it
sweet adeline is a "call and response" type song, where the harmony parts always just repeat whatever the meldoy had said. Normally, this song starts with the melody singing "Sweet Adeline" and the harmony parts reply with their own "Sweet Adeline". Continuing on, the lead should sing "My Adeline" to be replied the same by the harmony parts. The joke here is that after the 1st "Sweet Adeline" the harmony parts replied with the 2nd verse (My adeline), and so when it comes time for the lead to say "My Adeline" he just moves on to the next phrase "In all my dreams", but sung with the actual notes of the 2nd verse. Hence why they eventually run out of words to say and start making them up on the fly.
This never gets old.
It's such a delight, watching this and knowing what the next few years will bring.

Hey, this song isn't that old that it's from the 1800s.
It's only a few years off, from 1903, but still
I love FRED!
A lot of people don't realize but it was the trio and not the lead who messes up the lyrics first

The joke is that they forgot the words, so by the middle they're just making stuff up
HawkingsFyre Even at the beginning when they sing “In all my dreams, your fair face beams”?
HawkingsFyre Everyone is laughing hysterically at that point

There are two main themes to the gags: making fun of stereotypical barbershop stage schtick, and singing the lyrics wrong.
why don't they just sing and stop messing around.
They are singing Paul.
Love these guys!
