- Calamity Jane (Doris Day) sings "The Windy City" to her comrades upon her return from Chicago, where she had gone to entice the actress Adelaide Adams to perform at the local theatre. It's a beautiful number that reveals both her pride for Deadwood City and its people, as well as how sheltered she has been in the comfort of her little town. Coming down from a realization of how her masculine behaviour is perceived by other people, and how other women act and behave in other places, she may also be trying make a defensive claim about who and what she is.
Lyrics:
I just blew in from the Windy City
The Windy City is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got, no sirree
They've got shacks up to seven stories
Never see any Morning Glory's
But a step from our doorway...
We got 'em for free!
They've got those minstrel shows,
Purty ladies in the big chapeaux
Private lawns, public parks...
For the sake of civic virtue,
They've got fountains there that squirt you!
I just blew in from the Windy City
The Windy City is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got
I'm tellin' ya, boys...
We got more life in Deadwood City
Than in all of Illinois!
On the street was a dancing fellar
All dressed up in a suit of yellar
And the dance that he did there
Went something like this:
[tap dances]
You should-a seen me a-wind'er shoppin'
A-wind'er shoppin' with eyes a-poppin'
At the sights that you see there, yes sirree
Press a bell and a moment later,
Up you go in an elevator
Just as fast as a polecat a-climbin' a tree
I heard claim hundreds came
To a thing they call a baseball game
Cigar stores, revolving doors
Men wear sideburns, and they ought'er
'Cause a haircut costs a quarter!
I just blew in from the Windy City
The Windy City is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got.
I'm tellin' ya, boys
I ain't a-swappin' half of Deadwood
For the whole of Illinois

I still think it's one of the most wonderfully-effervescent and life-affirming scenes Hollywood ever filmed. Ms Day is one of the things that will always make me have faith in America.
The athletic ability that Doris Days shows throughout this entire scene is nothing short of incredible!! Lifting herself up by just her leg muscles, not once, not twice, but three times.. well, it proves she was in tip-top condition during filming! Not to mention her voice was in its prime as well !
She was pretty young too, has only 30 years this time
How can anyone down vote this. Its almost perfect
Rest in peace Doris. Thanks for the memories. You were awesome.
Absolutely. Always loved her as Calamity Jane since I saw it as a child. Rest in peace beautiful lady.
i remember watching this with my dad when i was younger, and i just grew up loving it. i wish more people knew about it. true perfection.
I loved Doris Day in this. My all time favourite!
RIP Doris Day loved her as Calamity Jane 😢
My thoughts entirely R.I.P. Beautiful multi talented lady 😢😥
Ik it rlly makes me sad as my man loved her and passed away a few months ago
Her movies were a safe and a wholesome fun for all the family to watch and spend quality time together ..
I call her The Elegant Mother as she was a mother in most of her movies .. kind, loving and yes Elegant.
She retired in Carmel, CA where she bought a cute hotel only to allow pets in as other hotels in town were not
allowing pets in. She represented the best in our American culture.
God bless her soul and accept her in His Mercy and in His Paradise.
Soooooooo sad to hear this 😞
IN LOYING MEMORY OF MAM DAD////AND DORIS DAY//////
I can belive that too! She is radiant. One in a million!!!!
RIP Doris Day... This was a REAL talent. Most singers these days can't carry a tune in a bucket or dance worth a damn. Without auto tune and backup dancers modern performers suck.
Ever heard of Broadway?? Because that’s just the non televised version of what she’s doing here 😅
Classic old person comment. Remember when your parents would say similar things about the artists you grew up listening to? People said the same shit about Elvis.
RIP Doris Day. First movie with her I ever saw when I was 8yo and this song stuck with me ever since~ ☆♡☆
Doris day may be gone but not forgotten . beautiful looking women and very talented r.l.p.
She's the greatest!
I love this movie and song cuz I grew up with it!!! I love all of the songs in this musical!
I saw this film when I was seven tears old. I made my parents sit through it twice. (you could do that back in the day) My little seven-year-old mind was blown! Doris was pure magic! RIP, Doris! Thanks for all the joy you've created.
the greatest of all time.God bless you DORIS DAY,Thanks for the memories.R.I.P.
Fabulous movie , always love to see this
My 1 minute of fame with Doris Day.
In 1976 I worked in the sales department for the magazine and paperback book wholesaler of Los Angeles: Sunset News, later ARA services. Occasionally, celebrities would stop by with their agent, after getting their “tell all” biographies published. “Doris Day: Her Own Story” was just out and she and her agent came by for a promotional effort. After her agent spoke, he opened up the floor for any questions by the sales staff and execs. I was upset that no one, including myself, asked any questions or had any comments. I think most were awestruck and shy at her celebrity status and presence. The agent said something like…”Well ok, get in a line and Ms. Day will autograph a copy of her book for you.” Since I was so disappointed at our silence, I got at the end of the line, thinking that I could ask or say something to her. When it was my turn..I asked her, “Do you have any desire to get back into films?” She stopped signing her autograph on my copy and looked right into my eyes and said, “No when I was doing the movies, I was always asking questions like…’ Did I say that line right? Do I look ok? Is my makeup on right?’ It was always I, I, I. Now I have a chance to do something for others.” I understood what she meant and just said..”Good”
35 years later, I wrote to her and mentioned our meeting and what you just read of our words to each other. She replied by sending, to me, an autographed color picture of herself. I first saw her on TV in “Calamity Jane” and would play “Secret Love” on my mom’s piano. I was about 12 years old then.
Rip Doris, thank you for sharing with us your beautiful voice. You will never be forgotten!

I love calamity Jane since I was little this is a amazing film.
I seen an amateur show at Broxbourne civic hall many years ago of calamity Jane now known as the spotlight theatre in hoddesdon hertz quite a good show bring happy memories of seeing the show.
i love this film
Calamity Jane was the best musical I saw during the early 60's. I first saw Doris Day, in this movie along with other films with greats like James Cagney. She had a powerhouse voice and she could dance. She is still with us in California, I believe she is 93 or 94 years old. The songs in this movie were the best. Easy to sing along with, and she pronounced the words where even now some 60 years later you can remember the words.
I Love this Song!! I know all the Words and I Love to Sing It!! ~Erin
i've been feeling really depressed and this scene is the only thing that can cheer me up. Doris Day is sooo underrated :( Boy, could she ever sing and the films she made were incredible!

RIP, Doris Day. May she rest in peace
It's insane to think this is one scene. You could never get an actress these days who could do such a choreography, sing and tap dance and everything with such emotion and do it in ONE scene!!!
R,I,P. Doris Kappelhoff. What a great lady.
It was rainy and windy outside today, so I was singing this song for like hours.
