  • At 11:13, during the closing credits, the video erroneously credited the clips to the movie Carousel. Obviously, It should have said Oklahoma.
RUclips increased the video upload limit from 10 to 15 minutes. I restored some portions of the songs I deleted on my earlier "Oklahoma" video to stay within limit, incorporated tighter transitions and made some minor changes as suggested on some comments I have received. Here's the new recomposed video. I hope you like it.

Escapism much? Life in OK or anywhere in the US was never like this. It's a story, like most musicals, a fairytale version of life. Even gritty ones like Paint Your Wagon or South Pacific are romanticized.

Oklahoma! was the first American production to open in London's West End after the war, in spring 1947. I saw a documentary once where people who saw those first performances talked about its reception. London was still bearing so much bomb damage from the blitzes, and the UK was on its knees economically. According to those audience members they spoke to, when Howard Keel walked onto the stage singing "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'", people wept to hear such warmth and optimism. It meant so much to them. The show was a huge hit.

The song "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" often comes to mind when I see a beautiful morning. I'm so glad to have grown up in a time when tv channels like 44 out of San Francisco used to play musicals like Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, On The Town, and Paint Your Wagon. Not to mention comedies like The Bowery Boys and Abbott and Costello. It's a shame so many people born in the eighties, up to today, wont watch these great old movies. They're REALLY missing out, and don't know it.

I was excited when, as a very young boy, my mother said we were going to see Oklahoma at the excellent (!) San Bernardino Civic Light Opera, as Broadway musicals had their principal songs on the radio in days past. As we parked behind the theater, I saw the surrey with the fringe on top in the lot behind the theater. Unfortunately, I don't think I made it past the overture, fell asleep, and never saw it live. We later went to see this excellent film with Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. It's a classic.

We stayed at Linda's Auntie house her mother's sister. We where on holiday there and had a lovely time. Linda's Mom took us to the local Cinema to see Oklahoma. It was such a thrill I had one of my very best holidays ever and to see this film which had just come out was amazing and wonderful I have never forgot it. Much as I enjoy Hugh Jackman's Versatility, Gordon McRae is nonpareil for Baritone tones singing performances particularly in this Musical. . Shirley Jones's Soprano was outstanding yet still underappreciated as a performer at the time. She was so much more gifted than her contemporaries of that era.
