Man, I'm a 40 yr old dude who can't STAND musicals (except for FIDDLER ON THE ROOF) and have never even seen CAROUSEL. Someone happened to mention this song in passing, and I was like, "I've heard of that song, but have no idea what it sounds like. Let me check it out." This beautiful song DESTROYED me. Not loud weeping and wailing or anything -- but just INSTANT tears silently streaming down my face. Super emotional; it got me right in the heartstrings. Dammit! Now, I'm going to have to watch the whole film!
Gerry Marsden was buried today which has brought me here. This version is beautiful and resonates so much with me. I can see the appeal Gerry saw in this song.
The love and affection expressed by these two beautiful women in this scene is poignant and even more so with the incomparable control to voice of Miss Turner
one of my favorite songs,,,sang it with my eighth grade class when graduated from Penryn elementary school. It left an impact for moving on to the next decade.
Joan Quackenbush I remember singing this song with my early grade school class, never knowing where it was from. But now, I discovered this song is among the few of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classics we performed on stage.
Geoff P Yes ..a true masterpiece...story, songs.lyrics,ALL! Shirley Jones,Gordon MacRae....perfection together always! "When You Walk Through A Storm".....sound corny, but this song has helped me through some tough moments...
Why Dad? Why did you have to go and leave us?? We needed you. I needed you. You were my port in a storm. Come back Dad and be my best friend again .... I loved you so much Daddy 😢😢😢😢
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky And the sweet, silver song of a lark Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown Walk on, walk on With hope in your hearts And you'll never walk alone You'll never walk alone
I would think that someday the musicals will be revisited and the true great talent that was in those shows will be once again be admired and cherished. So powerful and eloquent and I haven't used that word in a while. I was at a goodwill and they had the LP Carousel there and Shirley Jones just celebrated her 90th birthday so I was aware of that and I ran over the last song on the album and had to listen to it. Shirley Jones was robbed of many Oscars and Tonys her acting and singing in the Music Man made that movie complete with Preston. IMO
carousel and oklahoma are two of my favorite movies. this song always makes me tear up. everyone thinks im weird because im 17 and i love "old" movies such as seven brides for seven brothers and poliana and summer magic
+harley orr There are a ton of wonderful old films from the 30s to the 60s for you to discover. As a matter of fact, some silent films are incredibly impacting. xxdelicatedeathbatxx I love State Fair :) No one else seemed to particularly care for it, but it was one of my faves besides Chorus Line and Phantom (from the previous year.)

Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, National Velvet......I hope they are not lost with the next generation xx
When "Carousel" premiered on Broadway in 1945, Rodgers and Hammerstein found out that Lili Darvas, a brilliant Austrian actress who was married to Ferenc Molnar, the author of "Liliom", which was the play on which "Carousel" was based, was visiting New York. As a courtesy, they invited her to opening night. After the show, they asked her her opinion of it. "It was wonderful", she said. "I enjoyed myself very much, and I'm sure that it will be a great success. But, whether you gentlemen know it or not, you highlighted the difference between the American and the European temperaments. Your play ended with a song, "You'll Never Walk Alone." The message of Ferenc's play is that one ALWAYS walks alone." (For those who don't know Lili Darvas from any place else: she played "Grandma" opposite Billy Mumy on the "Twilight Zone" episode where a little boy is devoted to his grandmother, and keeps on talking to her on his toy telephone after she dies.)
This was my dad's song. This film was on TV and it was his Anniversary of his funeral. There are Angel's watching over me. So amazing that it was sung to me on his day. Lovely memories and I felt he was with me hearing his favourite song being so beautifully sung! Xx❤

Beautiful song. Carousel always makes me cry - and this song especially. It's such a shame that it's now nothing more than a football (soccer) chant to most people in Britain.
+Pilly P Because the song is sung originally - as can be seen here - to comfort the young pregnant widow and it's so incredibly moving in that context. It's almost a prayer. It changes it entirely to sing it just as a football song.

My first musical - saw it when I was 10. Wonderful from start to finish - the singing is amazing. Billy's Soliloquy top notch.
Me too. I’’m 76 now but I remember vividly the Musicals my mum used to take to me to see at the local cinema. This was the saddest !
This never gets old.
Always beautiful and classic.
Claramae Turner was perfect in this role. No one can touch her.
Gawd, this song WRECKS me. I love this score so much.
What a great song I love it and the words are so true
This version of the song makes me cry, so beautiful.

I grew up listening to my Mom's LP's of Rogers and Hammerstein musicals. They were great stories and music!
Beautiful song !!

Reminds me of "The Sound of Music" "Climb Every Mountain, Ford Every Stream." When The Nun sings to Maria. So powerful, both songs.

I love this musical so beautiful, with lovely melodies
This song gives me a crying jag. Always has. ♥️♥️
Carousel is the greatest musical ever. It turns men into crying babies. Which is no bad thing. Because it reminds us what matters.
+Geoff P That's not the only reason it tears me up, but a big part of it. Just look at those shining faces. Oh, what we've lost in America.

Beautiful. Saw it performed Friday night by the Pensacola Opera Company.
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your hearts
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone
The original words of the first line were: "When you walk through a storm, keep your chin up high".
I used to sing this song often. Thanks for sharing the memory.

Beautiful song. Carousel always makes me cry - and this song especially. It's such a shame that it's now nothing more than a football (soccer) chant to most people in Britain.
+Caroline Andrews - Yes but Liverpool make it famous and lets us remember great musicals like Carousel
How is that a shame, as a person who does both theatre and plays soccer passionately it's amazing, sounds a bit prejudice from you..
