This has to be THE best dance number in any musical I've ever seen. A timeless and beautiful synchronization of lyrics, music and movement. Thank you so much.
They did the same in one number in Damn Yankees. The lead dancer wears a dress with a very big skirt like the one in this number that she uses to stand out from the other dancers.
I love just about every frame in this movie, and "America" is definitely my favorite song, but it's Rita Moreno's "OOOMPH" at 2:34 that is the unquestioned highlight for me!

As good as the cinematography and the crazy camera movements in the new one are, I feel like this is still better, just pure uninterrupted dancing like if you are seeing a play, the acting and way lines are delivered works better than just being a song
This film is •so• much more exciting to watch than the new one. Spielberg and co. did not know how to set up or film the musical numbers properly, and many of them felt very flat IMO, even though the actors were excellent.
Whenever I watch the clip of 'America', I tend to miss much of the choreography since I find it impossible to avert my gaze from the delicious Rita Moreno.
A landmark in the history of the American musical and movie.. Between Jerome Robbins choreography, Leonard Bernstein's music, and performances by the cast all add up to brilliance. The smiling lady on the billboard is a fascinating touch.. Timeless, genius work by all.

I have always said, and will always say, this is THE BEST group musical number in any movie. Period. Rita Moreno is absolutely brilliant! (I saw a clip where Chita Rivera was being asked her opinion of Rita in HER role. She was, of course, disappointed she wasn’t cast as Anita. But what bothered her most was when she saw “That’s MY purple dress!”) I’ve been a total WSS fanatic since I saw the rereleased film in the theater in 1968. I never knew Chita wore that dress in the Broadway play. Not the actual dress, of course. And, boy, could she move in that thing! ***Side note: I like the changes they made in the movie from the play. Having this song between the girls and boys is better than one girl against Anita and the others. And flipping “...KRUPKE” and “COOL” was THE right thing to do.***

What a fantastic dance number. Brilliant choreography and insanely talented cast. No trick photography or computer generated imagery. This is just pure talent.
Pure masterpiece
This has to be THE best dance number in any musical I've ever seen. A timeless and beautiful synchronization of lyrics, music and movement. Thank you so much.
Wow, I'm really impressed by the choreography!
God this scene makes me fall in the love with the costume design in this film even more. Anita's dress is so beautiful.
They did the same in one number in Damn Yankees. The lead dancer wears a dress with a very big skirt like the one in this number that she uses to stand out from the other dancers.
Not to mention the pants!
@@bilahn1198 bruh
Today we lost the man who gave us the lyrics for one of the greatest musicals ever made!
Thank you Mr Sondheim for everything 👏🏻💖
xxoxxoxo
And Yvonne Othon two days earlier who played one of Anita's friends.
Stephen Sondheim also brought us Sweeney Todd!
Loved the passionate chemistry between Bernardo & Anita!
Rita manages to shine in spite of all the other excellent dancers. Must be star quality.
George and Rita really rocked this song!
Now THIS is a dance number.
*The energy, dancing and choreography in this film is simply fantastic !*
Watching this just leaves me speechless.
Anita-"You forget I'm in America"
Benardo-;) right bae
I love just about every frame in this movie, and "America" is definitely my favorite song, but it's Rita Moreno's "OOOMPH" at 2:34 that is the unquestioned highlight for me!
What a true masterpiece, incredible dancing, acting, mesmerizing music. Timeless.
Dancing is a MILLION times better than Strictly! George Chakiris is AMAZING and deservedly won an Oscar for this movie.
Hi
wow! HIs "lines" are Perfection
Fell in love with George the first time I saw this film and still love him now. This is the best musical film of all time . I can watch it over and over and never get bored. Fantastic cast, great songs great costumes and wonderful acting.
This song is amazing. Beautiful rhyming and sad realities. Their singing is amazing as well.
i was supposed to listen to this for a school assignment, but man I'm hooked. Maybe I should watch the whole West Side Story?
the ‘er’ of america at 0:34 is one of the purest things I’ve ever heard oml
Still can't believe that there was only one REAL puertorican actress the rest are americans
that's why when they say something in spanish it sounds kind of weird.
Last time I checked, Puerto Ricans are also Americans citizens. But I agree they should of gotten more Puerto Ricans or Latino/Hispanic actors.
i agree
April Juliet Ziegler how am I a racist?
That's how the buisness goes...
As good as the cinematography and the crazy camera movements in the new one are, I feel like this is still better, just pure uninterrupted dancing like if you are seeing a play, the acting and way lines are delivered works better than just being a song
Remakes never have the magic that the original ones create. Usually it is because they are trying to pander to something.
This scene actually cracks me up 😂 and I love the choice of colors that they picked for the Sharks and their girlfriends. Everyone looked stunning in red and purple.
The best musical EVER. I saw it for the first time when I was 13, and have seen the movie at least 80 times. I am now 69 and I love it, the cast, the music, the dancing
The saddest thing is she only realized he was right when he died
And then when she's assaulted by the Jets at the store while the instrumental version of "America" plays, wow. It's like what she said in the song is being thrown back in her face as she realizes the actual struggle Bernardo went through in the streets. That strikes hard.
@@tatianamelendez490 yeah
@@alessia-adams Yeah, i just watched the film for the first time today and i never would've guessed that Bernado would die if i didn't watch it myself(Although i knew that this was an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet). There are almost no comments talking about him dying!
I know right. My heart broke for her.
I don't care what anyone says, Rita Moreno is the star of this entire movie. The way she embodies the Latina spitfire of Anita is just amazing she is on point with everything from the vocals to choreography, she was just a supporting character in this film but I consider he my own personal lead!
Apart from how incredible this choreography is and how true the song is STILL NOW can we talk about how ‘Anita’ in this is also ‘Lydia’ in one day at a time, like wowee
What amazing is that to the Westside Story dancers, to them, it was just another gig, they weren't trying to make a names for themselves, yet they probably had no idea how big this would be, nor did they seem to care, u can see in their facial expressions.
They were dancing for the legendary Jerome Robbins -- it was the 137th take, their feet were bleeding, and he was screaming "smile, dammit!".
It was a lot of things, but carefree it wasn't! Lol...
@@ikshields I can't even imagine doing that many takes over and over like that. As good a shape as I was in when I was dancing this would have killed me.
Ian Shields Is that literally true?
However, Rita Moreno is Outstanding in this movie! I have always loved her as an actress and performer. She is so talented.
Bernardo: “Organized crime in America,”
Me: Wait hold up you are in a g a n g
What are you complaining about?
I THOUGHT THE SAME THING!! LIKE
"You know you're not helping with that buddy-"
VileHarteBeest A gang to defend themselves?
“No no no, he’s got a point.”
I think he meant the big corporations!!
The sharks were more of a crew to watch each other's back than an actual steet gang, much less a organized crime syndicate. Huge difference.
1962; I was 9. I saw West Side at the theater and was so blown away I was so much in mourning over Riff’s death and the emotion-charged, action-packed stuff of the movie, I couldn’t concentrate in school and nearly failed 4 th grade! I still don’t regret seeing this masterpiece- and this scene was embedded in my memory! What directing and acting!
Few musical numbers can capture the raw energy, sass, and joy of musicals.
Performing this scene was so strenuous that dancers were passing out on set.
But their artistry set a landmark that has yet to surpassed imo.
I love the wit in this song and their accents and voices omg.
Yeah, real wit; it's amazing how homosexuals, whether they're Cole Porter, Lorenz Hart or Stephen Sondheim always manage to have "real wit."
Possibly my favourite movie scene ever! I could watch it over and over again!!!!!
My all time favorite musical.
George and Rita are fantastic!
Rita Moreno steals the whole movie with this scene. She's perfect.
im obsessed with this song and performance and how cute are bernardo and anita? the best couple!
Lyrics :
I like to be in America
Okay by me in America
Everything free in America
For a small fee in America
Buying on credit is so nice
One look at us and they charge twice
I have my own washing machine
What will you have though to keep clean?
Skyscrapers bloom in America
Cadillacs zoom in America
Industry boom in America
Twelve in a room in America
Lots of new housing with more space
Lots of doors slamming in our face
I'll get a terrace apartment
Better get rid of your accent
Life can be bright in America
If you can fight in America
Life is alright in America
If you're a white in America
Lalala...America
America
Lalala...America
Here you are free
And you have pride
As long as you stay on your own side
Free to be anything you choose
Free to wipe tables and shine shoes
Everywhere grime in America
Organized crime in America
Terrible time in America
You forget I'm in America
I think I'd go back to San Juan
I know a boat you can get on (bye bye)
Everyone there will give big cheer
Everyone there will have moved here
Excuse moi

Thanks for the lyrics.
Clever lyrics with sharp 'political digs
Lively music in this case and lovely ballads in the show.
Light entertainment of the highest calibre.
It's not so light towards the end.
+Peter Joy What I was just thinking. 😂
Rita Moreno is absolute dynamite in this film. No other Anita can ever surpass her.
She IS Anita! Great talent.
The whole cast. This particular song from that musical has always been my favorite. Even though the whole musical was totally entertaining. Couldn't memorize those dance steps even if I actually had talent. Insanely good work by all. Thank you.
*RITA MORENO, QUEEN*
2:05 Her reaction after this comeback is why Rita Moreno was born for this role
Epic, as a kid my mom would always cry watching this movie.
same here, but only at the ending.
Anita: Buying in credit is so nice!
Bernardo: One look at us and they charge twice!
why is that still true today
高校二年生時、このシーンで頭の中がかきむしられた思い、今も昨日のように鮮明に思い出される。爺
George is the only Bernardo. No one can top him
oh my my I love this song so much.
I must have listened to this song more then 100 times.
What a choreography
The music and choreography in this number is just stunning!
But what bothered her most was when she saw “That’s MY purple dress!”)
I’ve been a total WSS fanatic since I saw the rereleased film in the theater in 1968.
