The funniest part is Joe Connelly was one of FRED’s main coaches and PLATINUM sang many Clay Hine arrangements. They’ve been good friends for many years.
The first to win a 4ᵗʰ International _Quartet_ Gold Medal. Considering that a winning quartet can never compete again (“Once a Champion, Always a Champion”) and that no more than two members of a championship quartet can compete together in a new quartet, that’s an amazing accomplishment At the time of this contest, he had two gold medals, which only the likes of *Mo Rector* (R.I.P.) had achieved before. He was competing that year (1999) in *Platinum.* FRED did manage to beat them which was an incredible achievement given the scoring bias against comedy quartets. Platinum would go on to win the following year with record scores then-to-date. Years later Joe would compete in *Old School,* going up against another comedy quartet *Storm Front* who directly referenced them in their most entertaining parody (“Jukebox Saturday Night” medley - another reference was in the previous year’s hilarious “Lida Rose” medley), and lose to them before winning the following year. History repeated.
