charles philippe give me a week a to make a pick thin enough to fit.( I may have spelled thin wrong) Just kidding I have no lock picks. I can't afford them I'm 15.
Hi Harry, When you are wandering around a hardware store, and you just happen to find yourself in the " lock " isle, and you see a lock that claims Max pick resistance, it becomes an instant challenge you can't resist - almost like a red rag to a bull, regardless of the price ... almost. You can't resist the challenge. I've got to test their claim, I can't help it! It is an illness you wont overcome, I know ... First time I've seen that padlock gutted, Thank you. Away for Easter, hope you have a good one. Regards, Brian.
+Brian Hignett LOL. You hit the nail right on the head… and it is definitely a disease. As for the lock, I was expecting a few spools. The complete absence of security pins was a real shocker to me. Oh well. I should know better by now. Happy Easter to you as well!
see why I like master locks now? its cause I stink at picking and every time I see one that boasts such outrageous claims it boosts my confidence knowing even I can pick that one hahahahahahahahaahahha. great video thanks!
Even now 6 years later helps me tremendously thank you found a lock like this wanted to see if it was good but no thanks for the insight and I won't be going forward with my purchase
Hey, great video as always! I just gutted a 930 that did have 5 spools in the Bible but no clip it was only staked or pinched. I guess they're never the same. Keep up the good work!!
I recently bought two of these. Both from separate places but coincidentally they had exact same keying. The one I took apart so far had some crappy spools, so they have heard your call.
Great fun with Master. Max pick resistance only works if don't test it and the thieve believes in the advertising ;-) The driver #6 is painted in yellow on the package 4:53; could you see anything special on that pin?
+Potti314 Thanks. I think it was driver #5 that was yellow, and there was nothing different. I was expecting a "bump stop" pin in that position, but there was not.
Seen this lock in the store and it looked like the best one and I did not get it but took a photo and wanted to check if you had a video on it and you do. Picked it easy. Thanks for the video grate job on all your videos. I been watching them from about 2 months ago 1st time commenting.
I'm going to break open on of the three Master Lock 410 LOTO locks that I have for practice and use the core in the 930 that I have. They have 6 pins and come with security pins; some of the best cores that Master Lock makes. I guess I could also get some American Lock security pins, and see about fitting a 6th pin. Could even counter mill. Fun little project. I should have the LOTO core upgrade done in next couple of days and I'll update. The upgrade of the default core with American Lock pins etc. will take a little more time as I don't have the pins currently, and I somehow managed to loose my Dremmel Tool.
I've been picking locks for about 2 weeks and I beat the 930 on the second try in under 2.5 minutes. Kinda sad for what's actually a nice lock, probably going to recore.
@LockPickingLawyer. You can always go online and find a ML w600 core for those locks. They have an am3 keyway that can be pinned for 6 and the tailpiece fits in master lock 930
+Grant Sipos Thanks, but I have several cores that I can swap into this... check out my old video on the Master Magnum for a look. Thanks for watching.
that was a fast pick. I thought I saw counter rotation as you was working your way through! was well surprised when you gutted it. was expecting spools , what a surprise to see the poor pin quality
i just got a master lock m930blcdlh, 10 on their security scale, max pick resistance, and i can rake it open with a half circle, ive only been picking for less than a year.. we should take them to court for false advertisement @lockpickinglawyer :P
Also...no spools, no serrated, no differing springs, no security features at all...so its just misleading marketing PR bullshit. MasterLock are conmen and their locks are shyte. Great publicity for them, keep them vids coming! 💩💨🤡💨🐵
I know this vid was put out about a year ago, but I moved into my house about 3 years ago. I found 2 of these MasterLock's but the pinning was way way different. I had no key of course, so I pick3d both open. I gutted one and like I said earlier, the pinning wad way way different. It had 5 pins. Now I don't know all of the exact terminology but I'll say that the "Key Pins", in which I mean the pins that actually touch the key, had short pins with 2 discs on top of each pin. Now I'm guessing the Correct word is "Driver Pins". They're the pins that need to be moved up to the shear line in order to unlock the lock . I had 3 spools and 2 Serrated. I'm not a pro picker or anything like that. I'm really still a novice. But the locks weren't that hard to pick open. I think they were much easier to pick than a new Master lock I just purchased, which was supposed to be rated to 10 in hardness, but that lock in referring to had no securiry pins at all. That's the reason I'm trying to find a vid of this lock that had close to the same biting mine has. I suppose the lock could be custom, but the biting looks like it's the original biting. All wear marks and material match. If anyone has some info, I'm all ears
Those short discs on top of the key pins are called master pins. They are used to provide alternate shear lines so that multiple keys with different bitting can be used to open the lock. This is a multiple key access control system, a master key is a simple form of this. EDIT: This was altered from the original condition of the lock as purchased.
+Cristi Neagu You make a fair point. Lock-picking thieves are rare, but they do exist. See, e.g., kxan.com/2015/04/27/police-arrest-men-suspected-in-numerous-lock-pick-burglaries/
LockPickingLawyer Oh, i don't doubt that. Also, i still think it's false advertising to say "Max pick resistance" and highlight a pin to imply there are security pins in there, and in actual fact you have 5 crappy standard pins instead of the usual 4 crappy standard pins. But when it comes to security, i think it's safer to have a sturdier lock rather than one with many anti-picking features.
+Cristi Neagu You make another good point. But still, I’d rather have sturdy construction AND high pick resistance. But back to the point of the video - my real beef with this lock is not the crappy security (which only annoys me slightly). It is the false advertising. A consumer will see the heavy steel construction of the ML 930 and the “Max Pick Resistance” packaging, and think they are getting a lock with well-rounded security. In truth, they would be better off with something like the A700 (another Master Lock product) which has nearly identical construction, but is filled with serrated pins and serrated spools (both key pins and driver pins).
LockPickingLawyer _"But still, I’d rather have sturdy construction AND high pick resistance."_ Of course. _"But back to the point of the video - my real beef with this lock is not the crappy security (which only annoys me slightly). It is the false advertising."_ And again, yes.
I actually found one of these abandoned on a fence so I removed it and pinned up all six. these things can be a BITCH to get into if it is pinned up right. mine initially came with spools and a standard but I did some work to it and it has 2 spool/serrated, 2 spools and 2 serrated pins and crazy bitting to boot. definently something u have to spend some time to figure out
cool, I just repinned one for a friend at work who lost his key. they are tough to pick after a couple years exposed to salty air on the docks, had spools in it.
+LockPickingLawyer master is getting worse by the year and dragging American down with them. now they put a bump pin in if you are lucky and leaving everything else standard. I just seen a American 1100 all standard except for a ilco bump halt pin inside. it was raked open.
I just repinned one, a pin surprisingly did fit in the little 6th hole. I just posted the video. it looked like some lame countermilling on 1 thru 5 now I see yours has it too.
I got a 930 few days ago and strangely it was not easy to open. After opening, I saw thay my 930 got 5 little spool pins. Also, the 6th hole in the core is the same diameter than the other and the springs are strong. Idk, maybe they saw the video and improved their lock 😂
I don’t get it man I have this exact lot just a bit rusty and similar tools and I cannot get the dang thing open even following along your vid 😭. You’re amazing I’m terrible. You did it in like 10 seconds I’ve been struggling for an hour
I bought this one for 2$ in garage sale and spent about 15min trying to pick lock it. I tried for 10 min after watching the video and it's still winning against me...
Makes a beginning lock for someone to practice on. I replace the core and save the body. Ball bearings, no shimming. Boron shackle and solid body somewhat hard on a bolt cutter!!! Master Lock will never learn.....
Don't understand why they just wouldn't use the same core they out in their LOTO lock with both spools and serrations. I guess it's a cost issue for them? Either that or they are under the impression that their brand name is strong enough to sell their product, so much so that they don't have to worry about having an actual quality product. Any idea why that 6th pin chamber is so much smaller? It looks like it can be swapped with a core from their LOTO. Does anyone know if that is the case?
There's one like that at the shop I'm apprenticing with. I've had no luck, neither have the other 'smiths. I wonder if the American bypass tool will work.
+technosasquatchfilms The bypass tool will not work. The orientation of the cylinder's "tail" and the lock's actuator is off 90 degrees from American locks. That makes all the difference.
I just bought one of these the package no longer says pick resistant maybe Master saw this video. I think I'm going to return it the key already got jammed in it a few times seems like that bad machining work still the issues.
+waltb0069 How new are we talking? I bought this the same day I made the video... maybe I got some "new, old stock," but even so, it can't be that old.
I would like to see one of these locks picked in a real world scenario , in the dark, with the neighbors dog raising hell, and the sound of a pump shotgun being racked not on a well lighted work bench with a nice vice and no pressure !!!!
With that claim they make, you'd think they'd be putting the 6 pin tag out cores in these or something that has at least 1 security pin. Man, this bugs me. They don't seem to give a crap at all.
+Git Pick'd That’s exactly why I made the video… not to show off my ability to pick five standard pins. Master deserves to be shamed for this misleading marketing.
Master says tough under fire, then while in their fantasy land decide Zinc is a wonderful material. Because surely a fire doesn't go above 800 degrees...
I really appreciate your videos. They have been instrumental in my study and practice of picking locks. I am still a beginner and I have been working on a lock given to me by a co-worker. It’s almost identical to the one in this video but is stamped 930/6230 on the back. I have no idea what that indicates. You explained, a one point, that there were differences in the two locks, one pro-series and the other not. There also appears that the two are also physically diffrent. I worked on SPP on this lock for countless hours until the original owner turned over the key. But, it doesn’t open the lock and he says he’s sure it was the right key and that it had worked the last time he used it. I did finally pick it open and pull the core but have yet to pull the pins to check them against the key biting. Is it possible that I damaged the lock trying to pick it? Additionally, what’s with the lock with identity issues? I apologize for the long comment but the stubbornness of the lock, it’s unusual two model numbers, and the key that doesn’t work has me really confused .
6230 seems to be a rekeyable "Pro Series" line, with the same 930 bodies. I'm not sure if being rekeyable is the only thing making it so-called "Pro." Actual pick resistance clearly doesn't factor into what Master prints on their packaging. As for damaging the lock, this is relative given the quality from the factory show in this video, lol. I'd think you'd have to do some serious tensioning or prodding to actually deform it enough for the key to fail, however. Scratches and looseness would be more likely, but the key should be viable without serious visible damage.
If they're de-activating that 6th pin slot, it's a shame. I love taking 5-pin proseries locks and making them 6-pinners. (I have a 6121 that's got all 6 slots filled - top and key - with serrateds and spoorateds from gutted american locks.) Sad part is, they work really nice with the American pins in them... perhaps American builds them to a better tolerance.
+LockPickingLawyer What's frightening about those pins (top pins 3, 4, and 5) is that you don't even have to actually get to shear, you can just get to the edge of the incline, turn, and they could possibly drive themselves to shear, with the wider top of the keypin effectively forcing it to stay put. PS: I did some investigating of the pins I have. My normal pins suck like the ones in that vid (I can see a 0-sized pin in the first position of my Master #1), the pins that came in my ProSeries are spools and normals, but they're a bit sharper. The American Pins I have currently in my ProSeries are very sharp cut. (Some are 40 year old pins from dead 700-series padlocks, and even after all that time are STILL sharper than that). They make a nice reassuring crunchy sound as you put the key in too. It amazes me what saving what probably amounts to 2 to 3 cents spent per lock does, in reducing the actual security function of the lock. (It's probably also why Europe has so many certifications such as CEN, SKG (insurance ratings), etc., yes, it makes the production more costly, but what qualifies as high security here qualifies as "basic at best" there. (Barring Medecos, MTL, etc.)
ganzonomy True enough... I suspect that the difference in production cost between this 930 and an A700 can probably be counted in cents... and you may not need more than one hand! One note - CEN and SKG do not have anti pick components to the rating. Also, in the US, we have UL437, which does have an anti-pick component (listed locked should be able to resist manipulation for 10+ minutes).
+LockPickingLawyer No they don't have anti-picking, which UL437 does, but there's a lot more prevalence at all levels with CEN and SKG for locks than UL437 has in the USA (The only UL437 lock I can think of offhand is the Medeco M3... whereas for CEN I Can think of many more, and I believe ABUS tests all their locks to the desired CEN standard rather than goes "eh, it'll work..." and does the tests in house as well..)
If enough people buy it and there's no warranty covering the very possible break-ins that result from the shoddy lock, it's a successful product in the eyes of a company that cares about profit over customer security.
what I think is that this is the best master lock 930 it offers which also means that there are worst I want to see a master lock with security level 1 wouldn't it be interesting?
I gave up on rating system of locks years ago, are they just making stuff up? This is hard for me to put into words... 1. They are making up a bullshit rating system.2. I was on the phone with Master lock once and they said, "The people you see on RUclips cira 2009 are highly skilled". (I felt honor when she said that almost said thank you.3. I was at a highly rated locksmith school and asked about lock picking their advice was watch RUclips; we hate those bastards. So from all that I think they have been pulling BS on the public for a long time, people have been bumping locks for long time 40's, locksmiths are just apart of the game. If they lied about that, what else are they hiding.
I've been watching you a long time I just wonder if there is a lock that you can not pick open please let me know thank you and keep up the good work bye-bye
"Max" can have numerous interpretations. "Max" among locks? No, but it could be the max pick resistance among Master locks. It just depends n one's perspective...
With a Master Lock, everything is a Master Key.
Sadly, this is often so.

+technosasquatchfilms The bypass tool will not work. The orientation of the cylinder's "tail" and the lock's actuator is off 90 degrees from American locks. That makes all the difference.
+LockPickingLawyer good to know, thanks.
I just bought one of these the package no longer says pick resistant maybe Master saw this video. I think I'm going to return it the key already got jammed in it a few times seems like that bad machining work still the issues.
great video, I would throw a master pro series 6 pins core in it with american lock pinning...
+Hugo Martel Thanks. I have a couple ideas of what to do with it.
think that smaller hole maybe for their bump pin in bump proof lock series
+JB Maybe. Good thought.
the new 930s have spools on the top
+waltb0069 How new are we talking? I bought this the same day I made the video... maybe I got some "new, old stock," but even so, it can't be that old.
the ones at home depot or lowes
do you think by max pick resistance they mean they made a naff lock so you have the max resistance from picking it to buy?
+cr0cket01 I think they're just lying. :-(
22 sec. is not a good lock. Do you re-pin locks like or just go with a better core?
Question if I buy the same as a clock twice but I lost the key to one of them with the key to the other one work for both of them?
yanowhite that lock is crip nice demo though keep em up mate stiglocks..r
Thanks.
I would like to see one of these locks picked in a real world scenario , in the dark, with the neighbors dog raising hell, and the sound of a pump shotgun being racked not on a well lighted work bench with a nice vice and no pressure !!!!
Who picks a lock after they are caught?????
Thanks, I needed a good laugh :P
+Jeff Moss :)
Fantastic job. Is there a lock that can’t be picked that is available to the public
All locks can be picked, there are locks that can only be picked by the best lock pickers, but if it has a keyhole then it can be picked.
@@lockpickinglawyer What happened to false advertising laws? Or was that ever even a thing?
Master says tough under fire, then while in their fantasy land decide Zinc is a wonderful material.
Because surely a fire doesn't go above 800 degrees...
Weird, my 930 is all spools for driver pins. It's from 2006 with different packaging.
+Stefan Dembowski That is odd... I guess things changed in the last 10 years.
Well, mine was in 'Contractor' packaging. It was fun and the 1st one with spools that I managed to open. Now working on a 150D...
the one i bought said 10 security 930 and a bunch of letters
Come on guys Masterlock was talking about picks that are 3mm in diameter and don't go in the lock at all , got to think like masterlock 😂
Isn’t that a bolt? Not a screw?
Max pick resistance of masterlock, bro!!
It's not even the hardest that Master Lock sells... just plain false advertising.
Absolute nightmare lock. You got to pick not one pin, not two pins, not three or even four pins, you get to pick FIVE pins made of SOLID METAL.
If they're de-activating that 6th pin slot, it's a shame. I love taking 5-pin proseries locks and making them 6-pinners. (I have a 6121 that's got all 6 slots filled - top and key - with serrateds and spoorateds from gutted american locks.)
Sad part is, they work really nice with the American pins in them... perhaps American builds them to a better tolerance.
+ganzonomy Not just a shame, but downright baffling. If you are going to drill the hole, why not the right size?
+ganzonomy Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
What is the thought process that goes into building a padlock that could stop a bullet but can picked with a hair pin?
If enough people buy it and there's no warranty covering the very possible break-ins that result from the shoddy lock, it's a successful product in the eyes of a company that cares about profit over customer security.
Could probably have picked that "max security" master lock with an old bobby pin.
what I think is that this is the best master lock 930 it offers
which also means that there are worst
I want to see a master lock with security level 1
wouldn't it be interesting?
I'd imagine that a level 1 is a twist tie... a zip tie at best.
LockPickingLawyer I found out that the bulls..t Max pick resistance is just a damn trademark!!
Words cant describe how tricky that was
lets see you pick the masterlock puck lock pro series 937
03:36 "Its not a fluke."
Its never a fluke...
The new version has 5 spools.
C-clip is more secure than the lock
I have 3 of these can i upgrade the core to something more secure?
I've been watching you a long time I just wonder if there is a lock that you can not pick open please let me know thank you and keep up the good work bye-bye
Have you ever heard from Master about how shoddy their locks are?
"Max" can have numerous interpretations. "Max" among locks? No, but it could be the max pick resistance among Master locks. It just depends n one's perspective...
Did master hit all the pins with a hammer before fitting them ?
if this is "MAX PICK RESISTANCE" why is it only a 9/10 on masterlock's security scale?
Very salty in the early years lol. I like it.
Update 2020 - Mine came with all 5 spool
my 930 has spools it came with the pro series core
Others have said the same... I guess they have either improved or gotten worse.
Any good books out there on picking please if you no
It means only Max is not allowed.
