As someone with both an accounting and a marketing degree, leave the marketers out of your line of fire...go for the MBA's, they love the smell of napalm in the morning!
Master is a company run by bean counters and advert agents... not unlike the majority of large businesses. The reason for pinning only 5 of the 6 available is to differentiate their low-mid product lines. Yes, they could make a much better lock for a miniscule cost increase to the consumer, however, it is about making money by charging more for a higher branded line of products with a higher level of features. Short term gains mean more to shallow corporates than a great brand with long term goals.
It is really funny to me how he always handles MASTER LOCK like trash.. i.e when he guts it he leaves the innards just to flop out and lie down on the mat in shame
I came back to the first video I ever had the absolute pleasure of seeing of yours to wish you a happy and beautiful retirement. Thank you for the countless hours of entertainment and knowledge you have given me and millions of others. Bless you and your family Bill.
All they care about is profits at low cost to them. Hence why most can be raked or very VERY rarely have security pins, garbage tolerances... It's a shame because the lock body is usually quite tough and they have good shackles. Damn shame...
I just did a video where I purchased one of these locks right from the hardware store and picked it open on camera. The core was crimped, so I didn't remove the pins on camera. However, my curiosity got the better of me, and I did open the core later. The new 930 DID have 5 spools for driver pins (all standard key pins) - it still didn't offer much security, but it is better than this older one I guess.
They must have listened to bill. Before seeing this I bought two of these locks from two separate places. Lo and behold they are the same exact pinning, but each had spool pins in the drivers.
noahtheviking yes - I don't understand why masterlock builds stuff this way. not even pinning the 6th chamber?? i can't help but wonder how much of their cost is assembly labor vs material and manufacturing of the body, hasp, core, etc. can they possibly be saving any money by cutting the corners they're cutting?
Sorry, that lock is loonnnggg gone & I can't remember when it was made. I bought it brand new from Home Depot and it couldn't have been too old. I sent it out in one of the lock packages AFTER re-pinning it with some.... tricky stuff. b
I won a $50 bet, I opened a master lock with a screw driver. Where you insert the key there's a plate that holds the cylinder in, just pry it of with a screw driver, the cylinder will fall out and with the same screw driver, pop it open. 1 minute flat.
Thanks for your tips Bill, you give great insight to the flaws in master locks. I have been picking for the last 3 weeks and have purchased a lock like this but it is the 930/6230. I am not sure what the difference is but I can pick this lock in under 5 seconds, I don't have the tools as of yet to dismantle the lock without making a mess of it, but when I do I will post a video of the internals of this lock. Once again thanks for you tips in the art of lock picking.
Have one of these master lock about 19 years old, locksmith added 3 security pins and re key to 6 pins, using American pins,is this lock going to be security enough to make hard to be picked.
@bosnianbill do you have any recommendations on a good set of picks? I have a few I have found online for good prices (Chinese made) but I'd love a push in the right direction. Love your channel man. This hobby has me hooked!
Very interesting video mate! I did not expect that Masterlock would put so many normal pins in there and spent so less money on security. It is a shame!
1:25 ... That "machine Slot" is NOT to put the ball bearing in (they go on from the INSIDE) ... the slot is machining made when the SECOND ball locking area own the OTHER side of the lock is machined out (at an angle) Notice Master's lock has the two ball bearings at different heights .. where Americans are at the same height. Lastly if you buy that same lock from a Locksmith Shop, it will have the 5 or 6 pin Pro Series keyway and Cylinder with spool top pins.
+Mazaroth That's what I did to my 6121. Took out the normal pins, put in serrateds and serrated spools. Then made it a dead core via key retainer to reduce feedback, and put in stiffer springs so that a picker has to push hard with the picking hand, and use kid gloves on the tension. Bit overbuilt for a gym lock, but hey, intimidation outside, and actual insanity on the inside.
Hey Bill, how hard would it honestly be for master to just up their standards and make some gnarly locks? I mean they could send them to all the RUclips guys and if y'all struggle with them they'd have free advertising and be not such a freaking joke, any idea why they don't want to wise up and become a beloved company?
master most likely doesn't even know. They probably have some recent college grad in engineering running their designs and getting verbally felated each time he comes up with a new model, no matter how shitty. Because they look cool, and are secure. I work in manufacturing in a completely unrelated industry. Trust me, its the same everywhere with the new, hire the cheaper labor, way to run corps.
bosshoss69lee Because of their expansive marketing the average Joe doesn't know or really understand that Master is terrible. It's cheaper to hoodwink the public and mass produce than it is to make a decent product. Also, their engineers and designers are awful. Many new iterations fix an old problem only to present a new one. Bill has another video of a combo lock that Master upgraded so it couldn't be bypassed. The result was it was easier to decode, without any tools. So even when they try, they fail.
I've always wondered whats with the clear/opaque plastic tube key chain you put on all the locks you have? I'm guessing its some way of identifying what key goes to what lock? +bosnianbill
Struggling with my lock. Have a master lock 930/6230 and I think it has some spool pins in it because I felt the feedback a few time but I haven't been able to find them again.
Hello, what is the name of the two tools you used? Where can you purchase these? Thank you! For your peace of mind, I need to open a Mater lock that is attached to my own back yard metal gate.
not sure if you're still having this problem, but i picked a few open with some modified street sweeper bristles not too long ago; but i had to grind the end of one into a pick, and bend the other into a tension bar
I just bought this lock and it unlocked the first time I opened it. As soon as I locked it won’t unlock now. Like I have the wrong key. But I know I don’t because it worked once. What am I doing wrong? Why did it only work once?
Great video on that master lock. Im loving your videos on the American locks as picked one a few times but was pure luck as cannot get it on demand as still getting use to serrated pins, so any tips would be great :o))))
They might have big balls but they've got no "GUTS"!!! I'm so confused as to why they put half decent pins in the 150 model's and then total crap in the 930's! Maybe they feel the shear size of it makes up for the standard core!?
Nick Lock Lab picking mat but even though I ordered my very first lock picking tools set from Sparrows yesterday evening and I have never had a professional lock picking tool set I just seen to like Sparrows from seeing a Sparrows lock picking mat on almost every video that you post.
bosnianbill: Surprised not seeing any security pins in there!! Now I have a 930 that I took apart, and it has 5 spooled driver pins. Coded (JAI). Made Oct 2008. Just curious as to when your lock was made.
Can you show how you change the inside of the lock without changing the keys? I would think if the guts were changed than the keys would be changed.. Interesting.
Lots of people don’t know any better. The way Master Lock advertises their locks is great. Makes people think they are buying quality. They keep making shitty locks and people keep buying them. It is sad, but that is how they do it. You can find many similarly priced products that are much better.
Not sure why they dont put that extra 6th pin in there... it's not like it saves that much money. It probably costs them just 10 cents to put that extra pin/spring in there. I think Master just doesnt give a shit if people think they're the absolute easiest locks to get into.
If they took the locking mechanism out of the lock out safety lock, and put a metal body around it, they'd actually have a half way decent lock. I don't think the safety locks are even shimable
At the end of the day good lock vs bad lock doesn't really matter does it. Windows, grinders, cutters whatever. If they really want it they'll come back tomorrow and get it. Even a Masterlock can keep opportunists out.
I think I must have found the lock that you moded Bill... I cannot for the life of me.. open this lock. What am I doing wrong. The case say 6230, from Canada...seems like only one pin is a spool. fourth in and its very very sloppy. just the slightest pressure on the tension wrnech makes everything stick.. Ive got at least 30 hours on this one.. she's winning so far.. any thoughts? Im frustrated... Master IS winning this one.. dammit.
+Cayenne Pepper American isn't entirely what they used to be, but they still use higher security mechanisms such as serrated spools, serrated pins EVERYWHERE, and a different keyway than a master. I like them for stuff like lockers... but that's about it.
Are these locks cheaper to manufacture? I mean, at least then their motivation would be understandable... if people will buy them in large enough numbers, and there's no business case showing that they would make any more money from making locks that cost more to manufacture, they're never going to do it.
99% of crooks will not be picking a lock as you do in your controlled environment. They will try to smash it or cut the shackle. Therefore it might actually be a better lock than you think. You only think in terms of brain but don't forget about brawn,
Mark Amaral he has a video or two or few where he beats up/shoots at regular master locks and they hold up to some degree. He has other vids where he tests such durability of various locks. He finds ones (including a wireless control master lock) that don't hold up well and ones that do.
High price yet low security. I think master was relying on the lock being tough under fire or tough against prying and bolt cutters. Will make sure i spend my money on an american lock instead
I bought a pack of master locks as practice locks and immediately regretted it, I cant even return them to home depot because I destroyed one. 50 bucks down the drain. Garbage. Probably use them to play tricks on strangers.
Does anyone think that Master Lock is EVER going to get tired of being THE joke of the lock world? I'd bet that Chinese manufacturers make jokes about them.
Wish I watched this video before I bought my M930 BLCDLH, i wouldent of bought it at all. Number 10 on their security rating, but no spools? Quite a joke... I got the 930 to replace a 911 that I sent back for replacement under warranty and it got lost in the mail.. I called and asked masterlock to mail me some spool pins, never mind the lock that got "lost".. and of course they wouldn't help me out.. Thankfully, my local locksmith was a nice enough guy to just give me 5 spools... pretty bad when masterlock cant give u a couple of cents to replace 30 bux that they lost
Great, thanks ever so much for the link, Bill. It looks like they also sell some other interesting product lines. Perusing them should keep me busy for the evening. Lock picking porn. Cheers, mate ;)
you think this is bad... the locks that came with my Mossberg 500 have 3 pins. 3 FUCKING PINS. this is suppose to keep children and burglars out. its ridiculous, this lock is pathetic. you could cough and open up this lock.
If you had bitch-picked the American, would you have gotten as quick an open? I remember seeing a vid of you pretty quickly bitch-picking a BEST lock and thought those were supposed to be harder to get into
Hey hill I can pm you on my mobile phone but I was wondering if you could send me some locks. I picked my first master 140 a week ago go figure lol master. I'm in the need of more locks. Also I picked the master with Bobby pins in under 15 seconds XD
is this what happens when a security company is run by an accountant?
😀👌
As an accountant, I take offense to this. I'm nowhere near this incompetent.
Those guys in marketing, on the other hand...
As someone with both an accounting and a marketing degree, leave the marketers out of your line of fire...go for the MBA's, they love the smell of napalm in the morning!
Masterlock does have bigger balls than American because it take great big steel ones to sell Masterlocks and call them secure.
+SA12String Tough under fire tho right? LOL
And now they own American lock.
@@Wolficefang it's a crying fucking shame too...
Actually, Master Lock balls are cast zinc, so having a plumber's torch when you visit their HQ would be a fun idea!
+1 for bigger balls joke
Yea, lols :)

I've seen other lock companies use these videos to improve their designs. It boggles my mind that masterlock continues to make total garbage.
All they care about is profits at low cost to them. Hence why most can be raked or very VERY rarely have security pins, garbage tolerances... It's a shame because the lock body is usually quite tough and they have good shackles. Damn shame...

Master Lock is to locks now what LJN was to video games from the late 80's to early 90's.
TheInternetDebateMan LOL damn dude, Shots fired.
The Laughing Joking Numbnuts.
Omfg I watch AVGN too and lock lab
This comment hit me in the best way lol
Well, I'm not buying master locks anymore.
they got a few good padlocks
They must have listened to bill. Before seeing this I bought two of these locks from two separate places. Lo and behold they are the same exact pinning, but each had spool pins in the drivers.
it would cost about .25 cents to make that lock much much better and harder to drill etc...
noahtheviking yes - I don't understand why masterlock builds stuff this way. not even pinning the 6th chamber?? i can't help but wonder how much of their cost is assembly labor vs material and manufacturing of the body, hasp, core, etc. can they possibly be saving any money by cutting the corners they're cutting?
cost you or cost masterlock?
3:50 the moment you see that bill is upset.

Branden Ward Peterson or Sparrows, I prefer Peterson myself
Very interesting video mate! I did not expect that Masterlock would put so many normal pins in there and spent so less money on security. It is a shame!
Is it possible to bypass the core on this lock? Doesn’t look like there is anything blocking the keyway

i found a couple of master locks (one of them a 930) made back in 2003 that have security pins in there
Struggling with my lock. Have a master lock 930/6230 and I think it has some spool pins in it because I felt the feedback a few time but I haven't been able to find them again.
I opened up my master 930/950 and it has 5 spool pins in the top.
Hello, what is the name of the two tools you used? Where can you purchase these? Thank you!
For your peace of mind, I need to open a Mater lock that is attached to my own back yard metal gate.
not sure if you're still having this problem, but i picked a few open with some modified street sweeper bristles not too long ago; but i had to grind the end of one into a pick, and bend the other into a tension bar
i have a American 700 and I have been picking it for like 3 weeks and can get it open what should I do
Would it really cost them that much to use the old No 19 core? Seems that core and new body would be half way decent.
One trick I leans is that you can take the core from a master loto lock and ram it in there
Where do you buy your mats for the pins Bill?
I just bought this lock and it unlocked the first time I opened it. As soon as I locked it won’t unlock now. Like I have the wrong key. But I know I don’t because it worked once. What am I doing wrong? Why did it only work once?

Love your vid's Bill! Is there a Brit' supplier you might recommend where I can get individual picks/tensioners without paying silly prices?
Nick Lock Lab picking mat but even though I ordered my very first lock picking tools set from Sparrows yesterday evening and I have never had a professional lock picking tool set I just seen to like Sparrows from seeing a Sparrows lock picking mat on almost every video that you post.
bosnianbill can you drill out the pin from the front to get the cartridge\zylinder out?
bosnianbill: Surprised not seeing any security pins in there!! Now I have a 930 that I took apart, and it has 5 spooled driver pins. Coded (JAI). Made Oct 2008. Just curious as to when your lock was made.
👍👍A.) I need to get that Masterlock open B.(Just randomly poke it like a monkey trying to kill something with a stick.😆
C clip more secure than the lock itself... 😁 bill straight clowning on MasterJoke
Good vid ! is American Still a better lock than The Masterlock ? or are they the same since master bought american ?
Thanks bill. Got it open
Can you show how you change the inside of the lock without changing the keys? I would think if the guts were changed than the keys would be changed.. Interesting.
just replace the key pins with ones of equal length.

I have a Master 930/6230 dated HAF, which has 5 spool pins on top
I have the same lock, thought it was the best lock ever until i came across this guys videos lol
I'm new to your channel and to LPL's. I'm hooked! Thanks for all the great content.

master locks clearly are not 'masterful locks'. I'd sooner use a 'cable tie' to secure something :) another great demo there Bill.
+Bosnianbill do you think you can pick all the locks in the white house? :O
They should rename themselves to Apprentice Lock.
More like NoobLock.
It's funny how rich people think. They want to sue you but really everyone should sue them.
dont worry, they will just crop it with the bolt cutters
If they took the locking mechanism out of the lock out safety lock, and put a metal body around it, they'd actually have a half way decent lock. I don't think the safety locks are even shimable
They are some of the best locks made by Master. And it uses ball-bearings, so it's not shimmable.
I wouldn't call Master Wacky, they're the wal-mart of home security. Mass produced, cheap, and falls apart if you stare at it too hard.
At the end of the day good lock vs bad lock doesn't really matter does it. Windows, grinders, cutters whatever. If they really want it they'll come back tomorrow and get it. Even a Masterlock can keep opportunists out.

I will never use a Master lock again. American Lock was a good name. Now I will class them with Master Locks!
+Cayenne Pepper American isn't entirely what they used to be, but they still use higher security mechanisms such as serrated spools, serrated pins EVERYWHERE, and a different keyway than a master. I like them for stuff like lockers... but that's about it.
Is ace lock owned by master to?thank you
Are these locks cheaper to manufacture? Well i probably wouldn't have started picking without that easy ass master 3 to start on so im grateful for that haha
@jdjojoda Trust me, it's THAT easy. Try one and see for yourself.
I bitch pick Masters when I don't want to go get the key for work. LOL Faster than going to get the key.
I bought a pack of master locks as practice locks and immediately regretted it, I cant even return them to home depot because I destroyed one. 50 bucks down the drain. Garbage. Probably use them to play tricks on strangers.
I just found a master lock that in the specifications says it has zero pins
Amateur Everything Just wrench the shackle open. It may work. After all, 0 pins.
No way masterlock has been mocker for 11 years
"Bitch picking" lol
bigger balls just so master can say well it must be better bump it up a few ratings lol
Master Locks....The FRAM of padlocks. Pay the man now....Still lose all your property later.
Master lock...all you've got to do is give them a dirty look.
Does anyone think that Master Lock is EVER going to get tired of being THE joke of the lock world? I'd bet that Chinese manufacturers make jokes about them.
lol seems like you have some personal vendetta against master locks
Of course it is easier for you then for others but still.
“Bitch picking”. That’s what I called it when I asked my ex wife to marry me...
Jay O yeah, I honestly am starting to think the 911 or 931 (911 shrouded shackle) are the only good locks master makes...
I like your anti lock behavior :P
This guy loves his own voice.. Geez
"Larger balls" hahaha. Thx for always throwing in the awesome jokes bill. Cheers. 🍻🍻
Have you seen the largest pyramid in the world found in Bosnia?
I tend to start by bitch picking then after I get a set or two I switch to spp
Master lock has bigger balls XD
I guess you remastered the master lock.
Great, thanks ever so much for the link, Bill. It looks like they also sell some other interesting product lines. Perusing them should keep me busy for the evening. Lock picking porn. Cheers, mate ;)
I've been following you for a long time. just wanted to say great job
Master locks are decent to keep your pit bull in the yard.
Normal pin? Standard maybe? Sorry, just bitch pickin!✌
so master has bigger balls
so funny
you think this is bad... the locks that came with my Mossberg 500 have 3 pins. 3 FUCKING PINS. this is suppose to keep children and burglars out. its ridiculous, this lock is pathetic. you could cough and open up this lock.
those gun locks are always horrible, you could pick them with a tension wrench and a strong wind.
joseph combes I had a crappy lock once, I tried to pick it with a screwdriver. no luck though, it fell apart before I even touched it
They're to satisfy politicians and anti-gun people.
Also I picked the master with Bobby pins in under 15 seconds XD
bosnianbill that would be rad. I actually have a good time picking all these locks. Definatley going to continue
bosnianbill I shaped some Bobby pins into a tension wrench and a Peterson gem styled pick. Works wonders
Who is watching this in 2019?!
ME...in July 2019 !
may I have that lock
"Master lock (junk)"
Public storage lock more junk Brinks ok off brand locks just crap
