If the wind is blowing in the right direction, you can hear the station announcements at Exeter Central at St James' Park.
I am so old I remember using the other platform at Polsloe Bridge. Yes it did only have a rail then but H&S didn't seem to be a thing back then. I've also caught a train from Platform 2 at Central. The last Exmouth trains used to run from there. There used to be flower beds between platforms 1 and 3 where the old platforms were, I guess they took them away due to the cost of maintaining them, which was a shame
It sounds like Polsloe Bridge was as bad back then as it is today!
Jen, I can tell you that posloe bridge looks the same as it looked in 2017/18 *side note there's a station planned just up the line which might be called monkerton which is proposed to be linked to a supposed housing estate
Like how Polsloe Bridge won a award LOL, Never been there to be honest. Enjoyed the second video Jen.
Gotta keep up the work of Cheshire!
Polsloe Bridge station looks half built. There seems to be more scaffolding than permanent structure
Great video, Jen. I used to live (when I was at uni) about 10 minutes from St James Park and Angie (my wife now) lived about 4 doors down from the new north road entrance at Exeter central so it brings back memories!
St James Park (I note the railway station signs have an errant apostrophe (st James’ Park - which implies more than one st James!) - there’s no apostrophe in that one or in the football ground name. Newcastle’s ground is called St James’s Park (with an apostrophe!)
Fun fact, they had to extend the platforms at St James park as one of them could only take one coach!
James' and James's are both acceptable ways to add a possessive apostrophe to the name James. Neither implies more than one James. This is correct for any name ending in s.
@@simonlowe3766 - you are right, of course - I should have got that! In this case though, St James Park should have no apostrophe
The cliffhanger on this! 😆😛
Gotta hook people in!
Locally to me (and you in the past) Bordesley Green still takes the prize for the worst station. Although personally its lack of any appealing features is peak Birmingham.
This is another Nick Bradley / Lost Jago Hazzard looking for St James's Park, St James Park and St James' Park (See also the BR station entrance sign and the GW platform board here)
I am trying to remember the three league football teams that have the local rivaly - Plymouth Argyle, Torquay United and Exeter City
Exeter and Plymouth is the biggest rivalry. The Devon sides have very different fortunes, Plymouth doing well in the 2nd tier, Exeter struggling to stay up in the 3rd tier and Torquay have fallen down to the 6th tier
Polsloe bridge is loved in a bittersweet way. Yes, its a terrible station, but its also very convenient and nice in its own terrible way.
Btw the RTT display does work. It just only shows departures and on the side where people are entering. Which sort of makes sense ig. Its certainly enough for the station.
The scaffolding is there because the concrete is crumbling (on both platforms!). I think the concrete dates back from the 1920s lol. They'll have to rebuilt it within 20 years, and hopefully they can make it safer, more accessible and perhaps nicer :). St James' park could also do with a bit of a reconstruction since its also not very accessible I believe. The ramp is too steep,
It's also annoying how those stations only get hourly, yet are >5 minutes away from central. Should really be getting a minimum of every 20 minutes.
Also Central really needs a west-facing bay.
Aww good old Polsloe Bridge, I used to live around the corner, got the train every day to Digby, in fact I was there on Wednesday to get train to Exeter St Davids then on to work, on a horrible Voyager (6 long long hours!). Not an accessible station by any stretch, I was very out of breath after trying to carry my suite case up those steps. I think the 'improvements' where the textured markings on the platform and the train display (that didn't work in your video, but was working last week).
Not sure what's worse, Polsloe Bridge or a Voyager! 🤣
St James park reminds me that it is possible to go from there to Newcastlr Utd's ground by train (if you count the Metro as such).
im loving St James Park & Exeter Central & Posloe bridge def looks unloved & i prob wouldnt feel safe at that station brilliant vlog
Brilliant video Jen, Polsloe Bridge station doesn't look too good, I can't understand why they calim it was improved. Interesting to know the first ever public open space was in Exeter. :)
Enjoyable video as usual Jen! When you said St James' Park and football, I immediately thought 'Newcastle', then realized you weren't in Newcastle 😄! The only reason I can think of why someone would go to Polsloe Bridge, is to do a 'Visiting Every Station' thingy
The more famous St James Park is served by the Tyne and Wear Metro and was opposite Gallowgate Coach Station, where I used to get the Border Clipper coach to and from Whitehaven( £ 4 return in 1992).
I always got lost around Exeter , if driving it was full of traffic, if walking just a little too large. Was the Greenslades (later National Travel South-West) garage near Polsoe Bridge - I remember lots of brick arch rail bridges in the area (prob not , it was more on the Dawlish area approach into Exeter)
St James' Park used to be my local (I'm not an Exeter City fan). The station doesn't really get that busy on matchdays since the ground is close to the city centre, it is more used by local residents (largely students). I know it is only a 15 min walk from Exeter Central but I do think the station would benefit with half hourly services instead of hourly
The Barnstaple trains used to terminate at St James Park! I wonder why they stopped that when they still have to run down to there!
Thanks Jen. X
I stayed near Polsloe Bridge in the mid-1970s while visiting a friend, and seem to remember double track and two wooden platforms. Is it a false memory?
Polsoe Bridge reminds me of Mauldeth Rd, Burnage and East Didsbury on the Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport line.
Do history and you'll turn into Vicki Piper of All The Stations fame LOL
Can I just say I LOVED the "Cheshire's Best Kept Station Special Award" - I laughed so much that I had to stop the video, rewind and watch again. Good job I had finished my drink before watching.
BTW I would pronounce "St James' Station" as you did and spell it as it is spelt.
It seems we have St James Park, St James' Park, and St James's Park as three different stations in three very different parts of the country 🤷🏻♀.
Your LNER 'simplification of fares' piece is spot on, Polsloe Bridge is a dump, and I've just subscribed. Yay!
I didn't like Polsloe Bridge, I went there on a sunny Saturday and it's worse when the tiny platform is full of people.
It has zero redeeming features!
Great video Jen it is interesting exploring all these stations.
Worst station, just wait until you visit Upton 😅. Also good to see the FGW livery lives on. Great video
Excellent video Jen really enjoyed watching this one.
4:40 Wow, as stations go, that was actually more despressing than going into Cannock every day
And pro tip, don't go to Cannock
So far I haven't seen any station or stop in England, Scotland or Wales that looks worse than the worst counterparts here in Sweden. If you ever find yourself in Sweden, Jen, do try a few of ours.
You obviously haven't seen Berney Arms yet.
St James` Park station really is handy for the ground
The worst station must be the one between Soufhampton Central and Southampton Harbour. Only about 1 train every 90 mins if you are lucky but it may have been closed by now.
St James' Park is pronounced as a singular James. Interestingly, it is a rare surviving station with an apostrophe still in its official name.
Sadly the bay platform is used quite a lot by SWR!
Hearing Exeter's ground described as "big-massive" tickled me a bit, it's rather modest by English standards
"Where the football happens". . . Barely! 😉😉
Any dogs driving trains at all
Trains Station 🚉
Is this a re-upload or did you ask the same question on prev episode that I missed
Nope - brand new video!
St james' park is a nice area ,heavily student populated though ,polsloe bridge is an absolute dump ,its baffling how such a nice line can have ...that!
It would be a difficult one to upgrade though. It is above the road and in the middle of housing so any improvements would cost millions. There are plenty of buses which go past there and more frequently so personally I wouldn't use it anyway.
if the toilet has no bogroll then it's the worset. lol
who dose saint ames's stpark stion refer to
Why Does Everyone Dislike The Class 150 So Much?
They're the new pacer
Polsloe Bridge,is my local station and yeah... i dont think they love that station
I'm sorry you have to deal with that 🤣
Hello! Sorry if you get this a lot but do you know if kristy asmr is okay and well? Her community is worried for her since she’s been gone outta no where
Living in Exeter, you definitely arent wrong saying the trains are better than the football! 😅
"Trains are better than football" - agreed! 😎
:)
No, they're really not good. The real St. James' Park (as in where football happens) is in Newcastle, where the nearest Metro is named merely St James.
Exeter city are rubbish, don’t worry about them 😂.
I’m local to the Mainline around this area.
