- Hopping on the inferno 72 from Sharpeye surfboards was a pretty monumental moment for me whilst filming our 'greatest board' test.
To say the least, I felt very lucky to have a chat with the man himself, Marcio Zouvi, the head shaper of Sharpeye, to discuss the new shapes everybody's been loving and to get the inside scoop on their imminent take over of the high performance surfboard space.

Surfing has a HUGE learning curve and what sucks is that boards are not easy to buy and try, they are so expensive
indeed in the usa they have (had) a lot of demo day , not even speaking about the second hand market which is crazy cheap with a lot of choice of board. it's not the same deal for europe...
Yes they are expensive but surfing is something you have to rly commit to if you wanna be competent. When you compare the cost of a board to a weekend trip away etc it’s not that big of an investment. Second hand market is a good place to look

This was the perfect follow up conversation to your test mate. Really explained how board designs vary and how those variations change the way the board operates. Doesn’t hurt that Marco has such a great understanding of it all and explains in terms the average Joe can understand🤙

Picked up a Sharpeye Flyer model in 2007, fantastic board that I still have and take out {occasionally} to this day. Been a fan of the company since that first purchase. That being said, these days I try and support my local shaper!

I watched your board reviews and thought it was honest and constructive. Then I had the privilege of seeing you yesterday at Currumbin tearing it apart on the Inferno 72. You stopped on the paddle out to have a quick chat as well asking me about my SUP etc. All round nice guy to boot! Enjoy your videos immensely !

Yeah great conversation with this shaper. It took my three years of buying and selling loads of boards (and losing lots of money!) before i "woke up" and realised i needed more KNOWLEDGE about surfboard design. I started "studying" design so that i gained a basic understanding of the various component parts of a surfboard i.e : Rocker, contours, foil of the board, different tails and how they influence performance, what types of bottom exist and what they do (single concave, vee, double concave, vee etc) , nose designs, length & volume relationships and also how much fins influence, the performance of a board.
I then also started defining what waves i want to / LIKE to ride (the majority of the time) - This is IS SO IMPORTANT !!! I took all these components and custom ordered myself a couple boards, for the waves i surf 90% of the time!
I live in the UK so 905 of the time the waves lack power so I added more length and volume into the equation. It's ALL all well and good being able to throw a 5 11 about and surf it well but if you are only getting 3 waves in two hours what's the point! I now surf 6 6 as a minimum to up my wave count. I have also upped the volume to suit my weight.
This means i do not surf in a vertical , performance orientated way BUT i can still throw it about. On my last session i took my wave count to 21 waves in two and a half hours session at a crowded break! Had more fun that i have ever had and at the end of the day THAT IS THE POINT!

Wow really cool video. me and a few of my friends were marcio's first teamriders back in the late 80s early 90s. i used to go to marcio;s house in ocean beach to pick up my custom boards. im glad marcio is successful because he is a nice guy and hard worker. great memories and great youtube video. Got a Sharpeye shaped for me about 18 years ago; 6’4” squash tail with fish girth. I’m about 30 pounds too heavy for it now, but I’m never getting rid of it. So many memories with it; surfed it in six countries.

I grabbed a 2nd hand (like new) OKAY Model in april 2017, from a shop at HB California, took it home and 4 years now and still my favorite board all time, 20 years surfing. OKAY model is the one that started this buzz, took Filipe, Alejo, Ian Gouveia and so many other CT level pros to the team.... Marcio once said, his boards offer so much control for the light wheight surfer. So am I. There's something in the back half, especially over the fins and tail that just makes turning easy. I would ride this board forever.... The downside is SharpEye boards are getting more and more expensive, half the WCT guys and girls are on those boards.
Marcio, is aging well. Great Shaper. I glassed many of his boards. 👍👍🤙

It's great to hear from shaper what went into the building of the board. Puts things into perspective why you should not go a buy the same board that Kelly S uses for comp, it would suck because you are not Kelly.

Kale I watched the full "best surfboard" final video and that is the best I have ever seen your surfing look on that sharpeye. It is the most length of rail I have seen you use in turns on any board; much closer to that classic JJF carve. It was really noticable in your surfing between the sharpeye and the twinsman. I presume that is because the rail is knifier than what you usually use or would select. What is your weight and would any of the volumes on the inferno 72 translate well to a 190 pounder intermediate surfer given Marcio says he had trouble shaping for bigger guys?
Kale, thank you so much for focusing on beginners. I’m 43 and I would definitely fit into the category of “poser” or nowadays I think we are called “kooks” I live in Mississippi, USA which is probably the furthest you could get from surfing. My twin brother and I want to desperately learn how to surf but time and location our against us. Thank you so much for talking about boards for beginners and keeping us motivated. Hey, very informative and great content, with a humble and open approach, which I enjoy (especially in this surf"scene")! I was looking to get a board for more punchy waves. Currently riding a chilli BV2 5'11, but it does start to skip on the surface when going faster and not just that fun. Was thinking the disco inferno 5'10 to develop my skills, do you have an idea, does the round tail work a bit better in punchier head high + conditions ? Many thanks

Shaped both winners boards at the Margs contest - wonder how many times that has happened?
The same surfboard behaves totally different with a different fin setup, 1/2/3/4 fins, on every setup roughly we have, small, medium and bigger fin area, for every board we have at least 12 different behavior/characteristics. My board is awesome/sucks, which one of the 12 settings?
I wonder if Jay Novak still shapes for Sharp Eye in San Diego. Been a while but had close to 20 customs from him over the years. Old school cat

Anhedral aerofoils are unstable so concave means more sensitive. Foil boards use anhedral to promote turning. V bottom is stabilising, and doesn't promote turning, contrary to common belief.

The rail sizing on this board looks thick? Are the rails medium thin? I'm looking at the 5'6 but I usually ride a 3/16 medium rail. The 3/8 sounds thick? @Kale Brock
They have a relatively thin rail with a lower apex for the given thickness of the board.

Buy boards from guys that shape for bigger guys as a starting point, smith shapes is the most obvious.

the inferno 72 looks super sick and i want to ge it but from what i have seen it is only in the dark arts and that brings it way above my price range. do you know if you can get it epoxy? it would put it in my price range

Make no mistake Kyle is not an intermediate surfer. The dims he is riding are close to pro. I have had a 2 Sharpeye’s for almost a year. A Modern 2 and a Modern 2.5. They blow my mind! They are geared more for intermediate guys who have a “real Job”. In other words they have a little more volume in the right places. His comments are correct they “feel alive”. Yewww 🤙

@@davydtolyarenok3704 The M2. Step up your normal volume a little bit. Get the MR Twin set with that comes with a small third fin. That is my set up and it just glides. That small third fin still keeps it loose but gives you bite when you need it. The M2.5 I ride in more punchy waves and is a little more performance based and ride with a regular tri fin set up. Hope this helps. 🤙

@@davydtolyarenok3704 it depends on the conditions you normally ride. The modern 2 is more loose and free with the MR 2 plus 1 set up. I live in Florida and it’s ideal for the majority of waves surfed here like 2-4 chop and swells. I just returned from Costa Rica where the swell was pumping for a week straight. It was head high to double overhead. I rode the 2.5 with normal tri fin setup. It is tighter and more geared for performance turns. It handled the conditions very well. I hope this helps.

@@KalesBroccoli thanks, when ordering an Inferno 72 they give you the option between round, rounded square and squash. I was a bit confused on the latter two because I always kinda thought that a rounded square and a squash were essentially the same thing. Maybe they vary in width?
Why does he store his boards upside down with the nose to the floor, that would be a good question? Perhaps it is more stable with the point to the ground?

He did say almost an inch, but I have one and I’d say it’s less than 1/2 inch. Maybe he meant almost a full centimeter?

watch his best surfboard series of videos.. it wouldn't have made a difference which of the finalist boards he selected as the winner, to me his surfing on the sharpeye just looked way better.. I would have selected it as the winner regardless. I don't think he could have faked that, there's way too many variables in surfing. Plus why would sharpeye pay him anyway they've already got a tonne of good advertising from their pro surfers.
