You Need These Surfboards in 2022 | My Board Quiver Update

- There are three types of surfboards you should have in your quiver, but that doesn't mean you should ONLY have 3 different surfboards... In this video I break down my 2021 / 2022 quiver with a look at what's worked well for me in various surfing scenarios around Australia.
I feel very privileged to be in this position with access to so many different crafts and it's not something I take for granted. Something I do think about is the environmental impact that these boards have which is why this RUclips channel is a 1% for the planet enterprise and why I'll be exploring sustainable surfing a lot more in 2022.

I'm 27 and it still takes me 6months to save up for a new board and i still sleep with it when i get one..... :D
😂😂
Yeah me too I can’t pull a grand out of my bungalo hole
Same at 43 so...
The thumbnail is fire, holding the midlength surfboard with the sun setting in the background and the view from the balcony is dope!!!!
So refreshing to see a quiver that covers nearly everything 🤙
Great content!!!! Love the idea of mixing it up. I have been surfin since the early 80’s. Back then it was a one board quiver and maybe a big wave board. Now I have the extra money so my quiver has expanded. I still ride mostly thrusters but have a twinie and a quad in the mix. Love all my boards at the moment. Modern surfing and surf begs a variety of boards. Thank you for your cool style and insight
How good is surfing
Bought a smoothstar because of one of your vids two years ago. One of the best additions to my quiver 😉
Yep. Getting a Smoothstar 77 even upped my game when switching back to my Carver, which I also love.. The SS enticed me into more radical compression turning which I then try for on my Greenroom. The Carver shines more on bowls (what little I can do) downhill (parking garages) or street but they are both super sweet surfskates.
Aloha, Kale, like you i love my go to three choices:
1) 6'2" Rusty, Dwart, best all-around short bord that I've ever owned, goes in anything from waist to double over head. has all find set ups that you would need.
2) 7'2" "Mitsven, Magic" great for those big days with long paddle out, great point break board. can set up as single, twin or single with two small sides, I ride it mostly the later.
3) My trusty 9' "Steve Stack" (hi performance long board) this board goes Anyware from overhead at Sunset Beach to small Town. set up 7.5" cutaway with two smaller sides.
I recently got a 6’10 twin fin mid-length and it’s been a game changer - never caught so many waves in my life and it turns really well.
🙌🏽🙌🏽
Which mid length twin did you go for? 🙏
@@StephenBeale it was made by a local shaper here in South Africa. Very similar to the Cannel Islands 6’10 mid
...yep... sometimes bigger with more volume is better.
@@MrNaets What is your height?
The Haydenshapes plunder is an absolute beast. You can size it up to a midlength with no issues. The level of performance is amazing. It's an older board but would love to see it in your midlength review.
My favorite board by far is my 7’0. Works perfect in that 2-3 foot Florida slop.
First off thanks again for your amazing work we all enjoy & love 🤙 you truly are a remarkable human being. And hope you all are safe , healthy & happy down on the other side of the globe . Cant wait to get a new board under my feet . Mahalo nui loa ... Aloha 🤙
👊🏾🤙🏽🏄🏼♂️
I have 2 mid lengths and my fave is my new Mark Richards Mid length swallow twin which is 7ft, surfs like a 6'6 and turns small surf into stoke!! Beats a long board for sure!!
Great review. This convinced me to get a Chilli mid-strength! :) Thanks.
Really interested in that 7’0”! I’m currently on a 9’6” that I dig, but I’m about to start traveling a lot more and want something that mostly feels like a log, but is a bit more compact and maybe even a bit more maneuverable than a traditional log. Don’t necessarily want a gun style like yours, but I think I want to find something in the 7’-8’ range that’s set up similar to a log. Thanks for sharing about your current quiver man, gives a lot of great insight! 🤙🏽
CI Mid 7' 8" could be a good fit
Yes! Mid length is the way to go.
I’d recommend a Pyzel JJF 7’ Log. Has a longboard shape and design. But it is snappy and loose and maneuverable like a shorter board.
I’ve got a 6’8” Aipa Fusion Sting that’s magical. I used a 7’2” Hawaiian Island Creations mid length to transition away from a longboard.
People seem to really like the Harley Inglesby Mow.
How about the lib tech pickup stick?
Great review, cannot wait until you do the midlenght.
Nice unbiased review, cheers! I think I’m about to catch the mid-length bug 😂
Hi there!
Just to share the boards in my locker:
1, retro fish for really small, mushy days
2, broken 5’10 for normal but crowded days
3, 5’8 newly board for normal days
4, FireWire unibrow 5’8 for good days
5, 5’8 Tomo copy for surf trips
I want them all. Over here drooling!
I’m very lucky !
Some nice boards in that mix 👌
I love how you added the smooth star haha
🏄 Best surfing education and tips aaalwwwaaayyys!!!! Thxxx Kales, from VIRGINIA BEACH, VA!!! 🏄
Sweet video Kale!
I started on a fish like your videos recommended and it was great to learn on and I still get out on it for smaller days.
Transitioning to intermediate I bought the JS Bullseye and it was absolute game changer, so easy to paddle and get waves but it also really progressed my surfing. Highly recommend!
Happy new year mate 🏄♂
awesome !!
@Bangers what type and size of surf do you ride the Bullseye in?
@@MsLeche86
From 1-6ft, with 2-4ft probably being the ideal range. Mostly beach breaks with fatter sections, but it holds in steeper surf too
Always enjoy ya vids mate !!!!! Boards in the shed, Slater design Cymatic 6'0" that I ride as a quad, Mick Fanning 6'6" softy that I ride as a twinnie, T&C 7'6" as a thruster and a Torq 8'0" (got it for $200. , never ridden). I am looking to purchase another twinning soon, so I will be checking out one of the Album boards. Cheers mate!!!!
🙌🏽🙌🏽
I have 7.0 egg thruster a 7.4 carpet and a 9.1 longboard ( that’s currently getting dusty ) as I’m loving the midlength appeal never ridden a twin but am keen to try one
Yeah, the same three surfboards I've had in my quiver since 2002 :)
Kale, would love to get your opinion or see you test drive some different fin options in the future. Thanks for supplying great content! (Bought a Smoothstar last week after signing up to the Intermediate Surfers Roadmap!)
🙌🏽😍
I'm going to own up to it. I have a mid length in my quiver for crowded days.
👊🏾
Hey that 7’ twin looked pretty sick. (Round pin gun one)
Album boards look right. I've been getting PB Custom boards for a few years now. Riding a few twins atm, one with channels, the other is a step up 6'3" twinzer. Its nice having a longer rail in the water. Looking forward to your twin fin test. Any special unique shapers in the mix?
As always very informative ! Thanks for sharing your tips kale ! Could you share what's the model of the chili surfboard please ? Thanks
Mid Strength 🤙🏽
Great vid! Im currently travelling around Australia full time and surfing/ documenting our travels on RUclips and I find a good Australia quiver is a Twin fin (5'5), Hybrid performance board (5'10 summer board) and a step up/ mid length! a lot of the time I find myself surfing by myself meaning I don't have to compete for waves and therefore don't need as much paddle volume as people with a lot more people to compete with. I can sit in the zone and pick and choose waves. The Step up is my least used board as I don't really wanna surf 6-8ft waves with no one else out.. but when I do use it im so glad I packed it!
After many boards over 40 years of surfing, I’ve moved from a 9’6” Mal to an 8’ McCoy Nugget. It’s probably the best board I’ve owned lots of volume for an old bloke but rides and turns way shorter
I've had Nuggets in my quiver since the mid 90's. They are an entirely different surfing experience.
It's sad that most people can't wrap their heads around them and so never actually learn what they have to offer.
For me, they tube ride better than anything else!
@@a.lame.username. are they for rippers or for cruisers?
Midstrength goes best as a quad. Pretty much a magic carpet and exceeded all expectations
i’ve tried out the carver/smooth star type surfskates, and they both didn’t feel indentical to surfing, almost like you said, a more skateboard feel. but then i got a SwellTech board and my mind was blown. sick video mate and you should try one if you get the chance!
I had the opposite experience haha
I suspect that the looser (more radical trucks) the board is, the more it makes you to get surfy. But that doesn't mean it's the best setup once you get the feel.
Everybody should have a Daniel Thompson Evo surfboard in the quiver!!!!!!!!!!!!
My mates kypto krypto flipped out of the board rack off the scooter, up 8tf+ into the air and landed on its rails and had zero chips or hardly even scratched it. We were riding about 50ks per hour on a windy Sumatran day. Duck dived a 2-3 foot white water on my new bali made Christensen lanesplitter and it snapped clean in half. First surf. Go figure. Hayden shapes make good quality boards.
I have a 7' x 22" x 3.5" bat tailed performance fish.
Love the Albums.... The twinsman in particular.... What dimensions pls
Hey kale i highly recommend trying longboarding... Noserides can be a blast!
Also longboarding can be beneficial for getting better, as it is a different type of surfing which requires a different skillset...
Please reply if you see this
Thanks for reading, you are amazing ❤
Just can’t seem to find the time / waves !
@@KalesBroccoli oh well thats a bummer! Hopefully sometime you will be able to give it a shot 👍
Hi Kale! I thoroughly appreciate your board reviews and training tips to become a better surfer. So thank you!
I was wondering if you would consider looking into the more environmentally responsible surfboard manufacturers out there?
I suspect there is a fair deal of scepticism out there and I personally would be very interested in your honest opinion on how they fare against traditional surfboards. ♻️👍🏼
Cool vid man, well done! Question, what is the knee brace you are wearing?
POD Active K8
I can actually see my parents house in the background haha,
Growing up and working in the surf industry made me think about how once there was a lot of local board companies on the mid and south coast and how now everyone seems to be riding mass produced boards as opposed to wear I live now where there are plenty of local shapers.
I'd love to see the pool board test with a wildcard. Working with a local shaper that has made a board specific for you like you did on the larger board you mentioned here.
Buy local
I can imagine that it just doesn't help viewers as much to see how a local shape other side of country or world works. Something they can't hardly get. Still it would be interesting for comparison.
@@ceeweedsl To clarify, I was thinking more about how Kale could work with a local shaper whereever he was on a specific board. Having all the boards that he has tested available to him under controlled situation at the pool is not something most of us have. I've found it very rewarding going through the process with shapers to make a board that suits him and then test it against the more mass produced boards.
Thanks for your videos! I just picked up a Dark Arts Album Twinsman 5'11" 36L. I'm 6'2" and 195 lbs. Intermediate level, surfing mainly in Hawaii and a few surf trips throughout the year (Mex and Indo). Do you have a recommendation for a fin that I should try? I like the Britt Merrick Twin template the best on my other performance twin and mid-length twin. Thanks!
Hey Kale, thanks for the info, and all the good tips as always. Very informative and helpful. Do you think you will ever review the new lib tech boards? They are creating a lot of buzz. They really changed the snowboard game, so I wonder if the surfboards are as good as they say they are, and worth the price......
Maybe if they reach out 🤷🏼♂️
Dunno ay I don't own one but a lot of people I know do, the hypto goes so hard in almost all conditions. Pretty keen on the twin HK that comes out this year in the PU.
It's already out! I picked one up and it goes sooo good
@@AAMarc Unfortunately not out in NZ until March but glad to hear it goes super good, so far I've seen some really good reviews for it in almost all conditions.
Hey Kale🥦! What are the dimensions on the chili 6’6. My resolution does not allow le to see them well on the vid. Thanks for all your content, it’s really helpful.
I think if you're a shortboard guy, it doesn't make much sense to go with mid-lengths as board quiver. I've had some bigger boards (6'4, 6'8, and 7'0) because I've always liked to experience a different surfing with different boards, but I would not have a foamie or long board to my quiver. Long boards are hard to duck dive and hard to turn. Plus, it slows you down on peaky days.
Today all I have is one groveler ( Mutant 5'6) for the high tide and mushy days, my rocket9 (5'8) for the lower tide and more hollowish waves, and my sampler (6'0) for the "bigger" days because it gives me extra reliability on the drop.
I feel I should replace my groveler to something like a everyday surfboard (5'7 Rocket Wide). My current groveler is just too wide and causes a ton of drag. It is easier to catch fat waves but super slow to paddle through the line up due to the flat rocker and its outline.
Exactly, haven't touched one in years. I ride either 28 liters or a log/sup no need for mids imo
Also huge fan of grovelers. Libtech makes strong construction and their magic flak bean bag and ramp series deliver for hitting central CA shorebreaks without too big of worries for snapping
Did you ever build you own Board?
Or like used a Shaping Kit?
Would love to do that myself and your explanations and knowledge are very good! Would love to see a video about that
One day
In terms of rehab or prefab for injuries, have you thought about kettlebells. 24kg and you can take it anywhere with you in your van.
I have one 🤙🏽
Next year for the board test you should do FireWire rob machado mashup
If I could only have three, I’d probably choose a quality longboard, a mid length and a performance shortboard/Aipa Flat Earth
The longboard is great for 3” waves up to 10’ and just does anything and everything. Practice style, enjoy nose rides, try fin reverses, whip it around, just have fun.
Mid length is perfect for smaller weaker waves. Or maybe a bigger waves you’d like to get into earlier. Some bigger days at Haleiwa I like more volume in a midlength to get in early. I don’t want to late drop a shortboard.
And of course a propert shortboard is just fin when you have some perfect waves to really enjoy it.
But now that I foil, I would say sell those three boards and get a foil 😂
hey, do u also surf with your foil? do u use a paddle, a wing or a kite? thanks!
@@Machete2030 I mainly prone foil and it’s the best thing ever in the surf.
I got a wing foil lesson. Like the handheld sail. And it was awesome. I then proceeded to be a complete moron and forget my board leash. Bird got destroyed and I popped my wing in the process of getting slammed on a rock wall and getting hurt and wrecking a board.
Lesson learned, boards FLY downwind without a leash. Always wear one.
I tried SUP foil but I just hate SUP in general.
@@krispewkrem3 thank u! and good luck with starting to enjoy it :)
Hello Kale! (i will try to express myself with a correct english...) Thanx for these reviews, it help to know about the material available on the market (even if it's just a few boards between hundreds)! One question: i was looking to get an album twinsman, and i saw on their site the existence of the lightbender. So i'm really hesitating now, and i just saw on this video you just get one. Will you compare these two boards soon? Please, do it!
Hopefully when I get some good surf
Kale any recommendations for paddling out on a mid length? Your mid length clips are in some decent sized surf and I love my mid length but sometimes it’s just a bit difficult to get past the break
There is a video on my channel called How To Paddle Out Tge Back On Bigger zboards
I’m getting older and find I need more volume. I saw the 7’0 modern falcon. Any good.
Hi kale! Yesterday was the first day I rode my 7’2 Randy Lewis board! It was totally different than a 8’ WaveStorm foamie that I’ve been riding for about a year. Do you have any tips for getting used to new boards with less volume?
Paddle fitness is key!!
Practice practice practice! ...and paddle harder!
What brand surf hat are you wearing in the videos? It actually looks good.
This one was an O&E but stay tuned
Hey Kale, thanks for all the good advise.
I would like to buy my first own surfboard. Would you recommend a mid length to someone who wants to buy his first own surfboard?
Do you have an recommendation and what are your thought about the Harley Ingleby Thunderbolt Red Mid 6?
Thanks & Regards
Dominik
Nice vid! Hey Kale whats your height and weight?
What foam for the twinsman set up, PU or EPS ?
I might have missed it but don't think you mentioned the details about the mid length? Guessing it's a Chili Mid Strength? Cheers for the great and helpful video👍👍
Chilli mid strength
6.6 with Power twins fins
and I now see it all at 8:51 ! thanks
Sales kimmick ! I’m wounding , why do I need these board for ?
What bird is the mid length was trying to catch it but didn’t and couldn’t see it in the transcript
Hey Kale - what other fins have you tried in the Cohort?? Or are you happy with the AM’s?
Just the AMs yes happy!
hey Kale, what is your height for surfing a 6'6 mid-length? thanks
Hi! What fin model are you using on the chilli mid in the twin setup vs thruster setup?
What fin would you recommend for the chilli midlenght?
what about the midstrength in 7'0 or so
Performance, big fish , gun and a mal.
Is the Chilli Mid Strength you are riding a PU or the TT epoxy tech?
Which would you choose between HT2.5. &. Inferno, looks HT2.5 have much more speed and power and can use at smaller wave, but inferno get more praise in your channel , if I want change twin fish to short board and surf on small wave which is better to me
I haven’t ridden an HT2.5
Smoothstar #77 Felipe Toledo / CI Sampler 5"11 / CATCH SURF ODYSEA SKIPPER TAJ BURROW 5'6 SOFTTOP
hypothetical question. if you have two boards of the same volume. One a short fatty & the other a bit longer. which board would be a better wave catcher? I have a stretch out 7 ft fish but my mate who is an advanced surfer reckon a shorter fatter board with about the same volume would actually be a better wave catcher. Whats your thoughts on this theory? I would imagine the longer board would paddle faster which is the main factor on catching waves right?
Depends on the shape of the board. Less resistance = better propulsion
MOTE “ massive “ or Fiji”

hello
great review.
what twin fin do you use for the mid strength chilli?

What’s the name of the first mid length board you mentioned? Looking at getting one myself
Mid strength
I'm an intermediate shortboard surfer around 83kg and I've just purchased the 6'8 for softer days partly based on your review. I have MR twin+ trailer fins, do you think the Power Twins would work much better than the MR fins?
🤷🏼♂️
@@KalesBroccoli Lol, I need you to tell me I need more fins!!! 🙂
Awesome video! I’ve based some of my purchases off your reviews and advice.
I GOTTA ask, would you ever consider foiling? It would be awesome to see you learn and put your surfing experience into foiling. You’d pick it up quickly and it would be great to see a beginner show their trials and arrows and tips to learn.
Keep up the great work!
Tried it. Hated it. ☹️
(Too hard haha)
What's the difference between a thruster fin set and the classic 2 plus 1? i've always think that the thruster set gives more a shortboard feel, and the 2 plus 1 are more a "glide" feel. am i correct?
Slightly more loose :)
Thanks for the vid, but you didn’t say the name of that 6’6” midlength (mint green) board, or at least I didn’t catch it. Which one is that?

I didn't know they were reduced like that.
what's the volume of your sharpeye vs your twinsman vs the mid strength?
I zoomed in on all dimensions throughout the video
@@KalesBroccoli My bad. I see your sharpeye is 28 L and your mid is 38.5 but still don't see the volume for the twins man. Do you know the volume of it? That's the board I'm looking to get so was trying to see how you sized compared to your short board
what size is the album twinsman?
Dimensions zoomed in on during clip 5’6
Soft top board test one day?
Yes
I’m not sure why you don’t change fins when they make such a major difference to their performance. I don’t get it.
Dude, you say you surfed that board in 1 to 2 foot surf but the clips are at least head high? Did you mean 1 to 2 meters?
I'm really battling to find the right size board/volume for myself. I've been surfing for over 30 years, I'm 47 years old, surf once or twice a week. I'm 5'8 and weigh 86kg, I'm riding a mini mal at the moment, but really want to come down onto a shortboard with some volume, just don't know how short or what volume to go for? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you from Stuart in Cape Town
Check out the Tomo Evo. I am in my early 50's and surf twice a week. I love my Evo. It's good from 2' to 8' surf. They have a lot of volume for a short board.

No thanks to any of these! I've learned my lesson. It's too bad you can't try before you buy. Really expensive mistakes if the board is not right for you. I'm heavy( 195lb-ish )and have decided to play it safe with a more buoyant soft top( a 7ft wavestorm ). I've never been happier! They're more economical too even if they looks goofy in comparison.
