Glad to hear you are stoked on foiling. I've heard from friends that their "cheap" efoil ends up being junk. Then they buy the reputable brand and are super stoked on the quality. A way to save money is to build one diy with quality components. There is an e-foil forum of homebuilders. Friends tell me diy is about 1/3 the cost of retail.
Great video Edwin! Congrats on jumping in. I bought a Fliteboard 2 years ago and I love it. No regrets. I sprung for a second battery right away so I can stay out for 3-4 hours. Also have made lots of vids if anyone wants a pilot perspective. Start up cost is high but it's about value and I love this ride more than any boat or motorcycle that I have owned. Waterproof jawbone headphones top off the experience.
Hello mate, It looks like you might've put the bolts and nuts connecting the foil to the board upside down! I've never rigged an efoil but I do a lot of other foil sports. We use the same bolt-and-nut track setup to attach the foil to the board. You're supposed to put the nuts into the track, and then bolt through the foil into them. This allows to forwards and backwards movement of the foil to control lift and it's really easy to do.
I tried e-foiling but ended up going with wing foiling instead - much cheaper to get into and lower ongoing costs, and IMHO it's more fun using the wind to power you
@@tedarcher9120 you can get a proper and reputable foil and be pulled behind a boat to learn the foiling aspect of the sport. To learn to use the wing you can learn on a standup paddle board, as long as it has a fin roughly in the middle of the board lengthwise. This is called the daggerboard on windsurfers and is what allows you to pivot the board and stay upwind. Without the central fin you’ll have no way to prevent being blown downwind. This is how many people learn to wingfoil, the nice thing is you never run out of batteries 😉

I've been kite foiling for a few years now. It's wicked difficult to learn, but so gratifying when you're ripping around & carving. My recommendation is you need to progress to wing foiling if foiling is your jam. E-foiling is just a no wind solution to the sport in general.
@@ottobass4860 Same. Been kitefoiling for 8 years and decided to purchase a Lift efoil last year for no wind days. Fun for a few months but now I'll sell it as it's feeling boring. Maybe if I lived in a place with predictable daily swell I'd enjoy it more, but flat water riding get dull quickly
I foil surf every day and it is by far the most difficult yet rewarding sport I have ever done. It will often take MONTHS before you can consistently ride wave and often times even more time before you can pump and connect waves. The coolest thing is simply the potential. Guys are using them to ride wind swell from one Hawaiian island to the next. They are using bungees to tie to a bridge and foil in a river. There is guys using them in pools and lazy rivers. Great vid, Edwin. Fliteboard and Lift you get support as well as other features. My Fliteboard mast didn't seat correctly and they replaced it for me same day. The largest battery they produce lasts about 2.5 hours and you're right, when you are getting into it 30-40 minutes is all you need! Have you considered taking off the prop guard?
It’s good to hear your opinion bro, I’ve not tried yet but wondered if it would become my favorite thing too. Cost is gnarly, but also too many options - don’t want to get the wrong setup. Great vid thanks
Back when the Hacksmith made a motorized surf board, I commented that they should make one of these. Imagine my surprise when he personally replied to tell me it was impossible‽
I bought a board and went the DIY route right after they did that video. 13k sounds like a lot, the battery sells for 5k. You can build a pack for a lot less and use your own connectors. I professionally void warranties, I did not care about that.
I think form a product repeatability, reliability, and overall quality stand point, the reason you pay "more" for a product is the higher chance of it working. Not just out of the gates, but several years down the road. R&D burns through some capital and has to be be recouped along with a profit. I think eventually COTS stuff will allow for more mixing and matching and overall prices will come down through life cycle improvements. But we're still talking about a what? 2-4 year old industry in 2023? Add to it the competition for batteries means its likely more than a decade away before a sub $5k-$8k system will be possible.
Having to "Cut, Drill, Trim, Modify, etc.." is NOT a good sign when assembling a "RTR"(Ready to Run) Product(of ANY kind...). That being said, you should have immediately replaced the bolts with rounded (semi-flush) bolts or even flat bolts(1/16th-1/32nd thickness head or thinner, depend on needed strength) and put the nuts INSIDE the Board, it doesn't reduce the Drag you were concerned about, it practically eliminates it. Small, simple, effective changes can have profound or even massive results to a End Product.

I'm waiting on one from an Indiegogo deal. It is called Xfoil. They have one around $3800 and I bought the $4699 kit. I also spent About $1800 extra for travel bags for the board and foil, a few extra parts, and a spare extended battery. Then, they hit me with shipping of $921 from Fremont, CA to the Atlanta, GA area. The batteries and charger came last week and I am still waiting on the board. I have been wanting one for about 4 years but when I saw a LIFT brand was $12K, I thought it was a pretty obscene price for what amounted to 75 lbs of board, foil, and battery. They claim that once this fundraiser is fulfilled, my unit will run $14K. We'll see. Cheers
I haven't put down money yet, but I'm considering it. Why hasn't anyone posted a review yet on them? (aside from Xfoil created vids) I'm in love with the multiple configuration options.
They must have crazy margins on these... like 60-80%. A surron ultra bee electric motorcycle is like $8k Canadian. $5-6k less than one of these premium efoils and would have an order of magnitude more R&D and technology in it than on of these boards. Looks super fun but the early adopter tax is wild and these companies just get to name their price until a company actually comes out and prices one of these reasonably. The ali-express option should be less than a thousand and a premium one should be what you paid for your ali-express or less. Guess I'll check back on these things in 5 years and hope there was enough demand to bring some more competition to the market :(
Those look super cool. I first tried using an Air Chair behind a boat like 25'ish years ago and I remember how much of a trip it was learning to glide out of the water. Leaning forward shot your back and vice versa but when you could control the hover it was so smooth and effortless so I could see how much fun riding one of these would be. Definitely want to get one as I can afford it.
Such a cool video dude! You captured your progression really well and nice to see your reasons for buying this one in particular haha. I recognised the lake there and Iv'e had the chance to kiteboard there during a crazy storm while I was traveling in the USA two years ago! Once you get the hand of Efoiling a bit, you should definitely try Wingfoiling! Its very similar but completely silent, which is so peaceful and still lets you get out onto the water when it's too windy to Efoil! I've got a friend who lives by the lake who would be stoked to get you going on the wing! Greetings from South Africa.
I have a hydro-dynamic 9-phase motor design that would improve the efficiency of e-foils. a singe diametrically magnetized neodymium rod magnet Rotor, in THREE 3-phase( 6-pole ) BLDC STATORS arranged in an axial helix 20 degrees out ( or 40 degrees out depending how you look at it ) ... much more power/watt, and less drag, but a more extensive motor controller.
@@codyrodriguez1056 yep, takes a bit off practice, maybe 10 sessions and you’ll learn to “ get up on the foil” ( out of the water) The sensation is awesome
Have you ever tried jet surfing? I own a radinn, think jet surfing is a little bit more "challenging" to control, being at direct contact with water is hard when the water is not perfectly calm. Anyway i agree, this is the ultimate fun for me too. Hope it will be more popular in future and more "affordable" too
Great video. Thanks for uploading. Waiting eight months before knowing whether you were scammed, even with a scam friendly cc, would be torture for me. With the motor just above the wing I guess this setup isn't meant to work without the motor constantly assisting? I saw a video of a homemade one with the motor higher up. Once pumped up out of the water it, of course, shuts off and the setup - I assume - becomes as efficient as any other foil board. Am I wrong about this?
good on you for rolling the dice. Looks a touch under-powered off the plane, which is not surprising. However, assessing the water inside the controller compartment is worth a look for reducing weight. While it might be there for 'cooling,' doesn't it just drain out once you're up on the foil? Because if so, you may not need it so could drop serious weight by sealing the compartment. I know, everyone's an expert, but worth a look...🤙
why did you not try the wing foil as an entry level/ A LOT cheaper... No time limit as long as there is wind, too. just asking because i am going between the waydoo efoil or wing foil for next summer.... just checking them both out this year before i buy
3:40 you assembled it wrong, all your comments would have been not applicable if you did it correctly. The nuts go into the board and the bolts go up into them. Everything would have been flush.
Scrap the hood mate. Those o'neills hood's are just too short. Either grab the quiksilver hood which goes under your chest cover, or get a hooded wetsuit (o'neill 5/4 hyperfreak is amazing). In terms of the remote, open it up and check what's in side, it's probably really easy to create your own
You mentioned your bought a less expensive model, & plenty of discussions above. Are you able to share the name of the board & which e-store was used? Much appreciated. Tony
Well I just bought one of these. Was concerned about quality of what I just spent hard earned cash on. Reason I bought one is I bought a wing foil set up to get fit on. Man its hard. The efoil will help me get started. Concerned about the water inside controller compartment thing but ill keep an eye on it and look after it. But Im an electrician/technician and built a 126AH battery for my father for his electric kayak. So I can service the efoil electrics. This one is 30AH and heavy. The battery I biult is about same size but lighter. Let the fun begin:)
Edwina really needs a late 80s,early 90s Honda surfboard.. It has a hand controller,2 stroke engine and can be ridden in fresh or salt water at speeds up to close to 25 mph if I remember correctly and is a blast to ride !! Plus they cost less than a jet ski back then, but didn't sell very well,so they're pretty rare nowadays if one can even find one for sale.. Imagine a jet ski powered surfboard with hand control on a cable..
Very cool and I recognize the location I have been wingfoiling there for about 4 years awesome lake. You should try wingfoiling next, plenty of used gear for sale, maybe see you on the lake.
Thoughts on making one, you can buy complete lower units from 80lb trolling motors for $300. And the controller and battery are well in the norm for you guys
The trolling motor won’t work. Too heavy and not enough power. Also they have to be attached to the mast . You need a brushless motor that’s sealed and has a low enough rpm that it won’t spin the prop too fast and cause cavitation. You will also need a good quality speed controller that’s waterproof. You will need a good quality battery pack that can safely deliver the amp draw that your board needs without over heating the battery pack, speed controller or the motor windings. To control it all you will need a waterproof remote control. The motor will set you back $400-$1000,speed controller $300-$1000. Battery pack $400-1400 and the remote actually costs about $250 and they kinda need to,be opened up and potted to make them properly waterproof. Virus has a video on waterproofing your waterproof remote. Personally I buy a skateboard remote for $35.00 and put it into a balloon then tie a knot in the balloon works great and if you do kill the remote you can pick ‘em up,off eBay all day long for$25 to about $45 for one that inductively charges the remote . If anyone is interested in a step by step diy build look up pacificmeister on RUclips and see his build
Danm it dude. I'm looking at getting into foiling as well and now I see someone I trust talking about it, I HAVE TO! I'm hesitant on the efoil, that's alot of money. I'm looking at surf and sail setup since I'm on the coast and all the locals use sails.
My friend bought two of the getFoil boards. Kind of the cheapest basic board. Had a blast learning over the course of two seasons. I think it is much harder than it looks.
Reminds me when snowboarding first hit the scene, actually before. There was this article in Boys Life magazine that showed these guys riding this thing (Burton) with a rope tied to the front of it leading up to the forward hand. So I made one modifying a single water ski and took it up to our local mountain (mt. Hood) which of course they didn’t let me on the lifts, so I walk up. It worked like crap but I had a blast. It wouldn’t be for another 10 years before snowboards started showing up at our local resort. And they still didn’t let them on the lifts😂 It would take a bit for them to catch on. I should tell you about being the first rollerblader on Venice Beach, but that’s a story for another day, and I’m starting to sound like Forrest Gump;) Anyway have fun trail blazing your new sport at your local lake, and thank you for the video. So cool!👏
shii sound like I have you to thank for a dope childhood. grow up in Cali in the 90s and rollerblading was a big part of sports where I'm from. and from my time round your mountain, mt hood, i can't imagine what itd be like without boards
It was winter of 85 and I picked up a pair of rollerblades at the only place that carried them, at an ice-skating rink, and they were very obscure even there because all the ice skaters thought they were really stupid so none of them bought any. I rode up and down the boardwalk at Venice Beach for a couple years before I saw another rollerblader. I was a vert skater at the time (skateboard) So the first time I showed up to this backyard half pipe with rollerblades my friends laughed at me and strangers hated. Which ironically several years before that was the exact same experience I had at mt. hood with my homemade snowboard. Friends laughed strangers hated. Anyway the rest is history. Thanks for the interest down memory lane. Take care

Let me get this straight: you spent nearly $5000 for a no name board, after waiting months and spending lots of time validating and finding suppliers? Had you spent $10,000 for a brand new Fliteboard, you could have sold it for $8000-9000 if you needed to. This Chinese copy, in addition to being dangerous, is now nearly worthless. You could have also bought a well used Fliteboard or Lift for about $5000. And this would not have depreciated at all. At least this video is very helpful - hopefully to others!

Pete got scammed
I have a hydro-dynamic 9-phase motor design that would improve the efficiency of e-foils.
a singe diametrically magnetized neodymium rod magnet Rotor,
in THREE 3-phase( 6-pole ) BLDC STATORS arranged in an axial helix 20 degrees out ( or 40 degrees out depending how you look at it ) ... much more power/watt, and less drag, but a more extensive motor controller.
Have you ever tried a freebord? It’s like snowboarding but on the streets with 6 wheels. Lots of clips on RUclips.
what type of camera are you using while you were on the efoil? gopro?
You should try wing foiling, same deal but with a wing. No batteries, not a lot of wind needed to get going
Yeah but 100x harder lol
Why happens when I fall in the middle of the lake?
Can u just stand on it and go?
@@codyrodriguez1056 yep, takes a bit off practice, maybe 10 sessions and you’ll learn to “ get up on the foil” ( out of the water)
The sensation is awesome
@@codyrodriguez1056 climb back on the board, stand back up and go again
That is a lot of money for that board. I imagine the battery is probably the most expensive part.
Dude! Great post. I can't believe you can get in that water without a hood! I get brain freeze. Thanks for bringing this sport forward.
Where did you get the extra transmitter and how to pair?
@ 3:52 If you are using this correctly, I don't think those bolts or the mast mount gap will have much of an impact on hydrodynamic efficiency.
Hello, say me please, What brand is this board??
This is exactly the sport I’m looking for. Great video. New sub
I know, everyone's an expert, but worth a look...🤙
how about hang glider do you have some info if you have also, how do like this thing.
Yeah the mast has been attached wrong, the nuts go into sliding rail and you screw through the mast into the sliding mast track where the nuts are.
Fortune clearly favours the brave! Nice buy!
why did you not try the wing foil as an entry level/ A LOT cheaper... No time limit as long as there is wind, too. just asking because i am going between the waydoo efoil or wing foil for next summer.... just checking them both out this year before i buy
Lol you could buy a small boat for that much
3:40 you assembled it wrong, all your comments would have been not applicable if you did it correctly. The nuts go into the board and the bolts go up into them. Everything would have been flush.
Great production quality on this. Around how much volume does the board have as it has to compensate for that heavy battery and such?
Scrap the hood mate. Those o'neills hood's are just too short. Either grab the quiksilver hood which goes under your chest cover, or get a hooded wetsuit (o'neill 5/4 hyperfreak is amazing). In terms of the remote, open it up and check what's in side, it's probably really easy to create your own
You mentioned your bought a less expensive model, & plenty of discussions above. Are you able to share the name of the board & which e-store was used?
Much appreciated.
Tony
Thx for the video, Edwin. I’m def doing this after watching u but I’ll get a Lift bc, well, I can afford it. Looks sick!
That’s impressive and the photography is really good.
Thanks Edwin. What type of guitar is that hanging up behind you if you don't mind me asking? All the best, Rich.
I think it’s a Kramer SM-1 or similar
Can you tweak the foil so your not as far forward on the board, maybe a couple washers under the forward bolts?
You can move the mast back to reduce lift.
It is not a flying surfboard it is a hydrofoil 😂
Oh wait,Edwina is all about the e powered bs which in reality has a massive carbon footprint way bigger than any combustion engine...
You mean jetboards?
You really should try wing foiling. Using the power of the wind to foil is just so much fun. Of course you cannot do it everyday like with the efoil.
Very cool and I recognize the location I have been wingfoiling there for about 4 years awesome lake. You should try wingfoiling next, plenty of used gear for sale, maybe see you on the lake.
$13k is a complete rip off. Look at what these things are made with. NO WAY they should cost that much.
Great Video! How did you mount that Camera?
I tried this in Fuerteventura recently just to get into wingfoiling, and I got completely hooked within 30 minutes. Too expensive yet though.
Whats the Alibaba Link? Did you ever get hit by the foil? Cheers
Danm it dude. I'm looking at getting into foiling as well and now I see someone I trust talking about it, I HAVE TO!
I'm hesitant on the efoil, that's alot of money. I'm looking at surf and sail setup since I'm on the coast and all the locals use sails.
Have you done windsurfing/foiling? It is still not cheap, but its not efoil prices for something good.
I HAVE to try it
Hyped for you bud!
VIDEO STARTS HERE: 4:44
Where did u buy?and what's the name?
Really hope these will get more affordable in the near future
Change those mast bolts that attach the board to torx screws, will make it much easier to assemble.
My friend bought two of the getFoil boards. Kind of the cheapest basic board. Had a blast learning over the course of two seasons. I think it is much harder than it looks.
You are on a youtube makers channel. You all should make one! Doesnt look super complex. Glad it worked for you!
We agree!
So cool!👏
Lol, i was the first to comment on this video back in the 20s
shii sound like I have you to thank for a dope childhood. grow up in Cali in the 90s and rollerblading was a big part of sports where I'm from. and from my time round your mountain, mt hood, i can't imagine what itd be like without boards
Take care
@@dukie1616 that's fuckin tight! had some great times ridin vert on blades. and homemade things make the best rides. my first 'snowboard' was duct tape on a skateboard with some sleeping bag straps as bindings. fun as hell. stay up! thanks for the inspirations
@Dukie I had one of those boards in the 60’s! It was called a “Snurfer.” I had a blast with it!
www.jwkash.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Snurfer.jpg
My legs are cramping up just watching you.
Yes exactly 😂, same with any electric toys, you will pay for the quality even if it's Chinese, those wheels especially
What an absolutely stupid comment.
Where did you get the foil from, do you got a Email from the supplyer?
Insane what getting into this sport cost. I looked it up excited and was shocked. No way this should cost so much more than riding motorcycles.
Great video, what 360 camera are you using? Looks good
usually, foils are attached via nuts to the foil channel. Were they really not included? the foil mounting seems wrong like this.
