Kale, thank you so dam much!!!! 43 year old father of 4 living in Mississippi, USA try to learn to surf. Your dedication and work for the everyday surfer is unmatched. I have no doubt squeezing in my Kale time on RUclips will pay off. Thanks so much brother, peace to you and your crew. Be safe out there 😎✌️
Fantastic production. Great that you never forget the late beginner level- thinking of jumping from long board at some stage. Also kudos to all the manufacturers for letting you critique their boards. Well done.
Thank you for tuning in friends :) To repeat the ethos I expressed in this series; 1: the perfect board is relative and unique to the surfer 2: fins impact a board , yes, but don’t turn it from a POS into a magic carpet. Next year we will accept fin recommendations from shapers 3: the PYZEL was a great board but not appropriate for every day conditions (imo) or every day surfers (imo) 4: leftover boards are available for hire at URBNSURF in Melbourne. My grubby little hands get to keep the top 3. 5: this was a huge production for us, be kind 🙌🏽🤙🏽 6: consider signing up to my online surf school thesurfersroadmap.com or join me on Patreon
Gotta disagree with #2 I've had fins change a POS into my favorite board twice. Difference between plastic and fiberglass in terms of flex is enough to make or break a board, but I've tried different templates and not been able to notice much difference.
Love this vid and excited to see more. Notes for next year's test: 1. More surfers testing could eliminate bias. 2. Including hybrid models would be even more applicable to everyday surfers.
The change in music told me who won. The Sharpeye sounds like a good board for an aging surfer like myself who wants an effortless board vs having to work one to get it going. Great series. The Twinsman looks really fun too.
Such a solid piece of work thanks so much for the time and effort! Testing boards over that long a period in such a range of waves and conditions is beyond anything i've seen. Thank you!
I feel your production value increases tenfold with every video! Incredible work here mate, well done - looking forward to seeing you in the pool in may, yeeewww!
Awesome review! I took over 30 days with a LOT of effort all summarized in 32 minutes!! Certainly worth it and extremely helpful for all surfers at all levelsl!!! Many thanks for the initiative and looking forward to see a review like that every year!!! All the best!!!
Hey Kale, I'm at the early stages of beginner level (literally riding a wave storm), but I've found you're videos incredibly helpful for getting my head around all the basics and terminology (it's a steep learning curve!). Thanks so much for what you do, and I hope to surf with you one day. My goal is to eventually surf Pipeline (Hawai'i) and land a 360! I'll continue to follow your journey on YT and IG!
Loved the video Kale, as an intermediate surfer, I found this really interesting in how far the smallest detail can effect the performance of a board 🤙🏼🌊🤙🏼
If a magic board doesn't appear, sharpeye or chilli twinnie will be top 3. So stoked for this video 👌 (damn I was the first comment and no heart, PLUS IV BEEN CALLING SHARPEYE SINCE TGR FIRST VIDEO!! )
This is the best! Thanks, Kale I'm 15 and looking for a new magic shreadstick. I'm also in your intermediate surfers roadmap so this series is perfect for me. Love it yewww.
I've been surfing for over 30 years and I can definitely say the best surf board I've ever had is the Channel Island Water Hog. 10 years ago I got one that was 8ft. It's was a really great board, but I had to get rid of it. Last year I found another Water Hog but it was a 7'2 with 45 liters. I'm 5'11, 210lbs. And it is the best surfboard I've ever owned. It's fast, responsive, and perfect for hitting the lip, and doing big carves. It works in 2-3ft up to well over head. I feel like I'm hiding a secret in the line up with how great this board is. I can't say enough about it. 🤙😷🇺🇲
Kale, the whole series was epic in every category (well-written, produced, filmed, surfed, etc.)! Hats off to you, man. As a tiny note, the pool as a control makes a ton of sense due to the extremely variability in natural waves. One possible downside (which I am sure you factored in) to using that control is some of the boards that might go great in natural waves may seriously underperform in the first leg of the test and thus not make it into a part of the test where they might shine. However, with all the testing time you spent, I fully understand you have to find a logically way to narrow down the competition, and the search is for an amazing all-around board for the non-professional surfer. Additionally, even if the testing had been reversed, I fully believe the Sharp Eye would still have won. Again, I am truly amazed by all the hard work that must have went into this and so excited to hopefully see this every year!
Awesome board review! I really appreciate you putting this together for me and our surf community to enjoy. I’ve been riding Sharp Eye Surfboards for the past few years and all I can tell you is that everything that you feel in the Inferno 72 is spot on. Marcio’s boards just make me surf better and have more fun. I’ve been loving the Disco Inferno and The Stroms in epoxy for everyday waves. Thanks again for the amazing board review. Cheers to surfing better and having more fun!
Loved the series mate! Great job! Personally, I think your turns were more precise and the speed of the Inferno 72 was noticeably better than all of the boards you rode. That said, I'm not paying $1195 plus shipping and sales tax for a surfboard. I did hear though that Sharpeye is releasing the Inferno 72 shape at the end of May. Yeewww!
Awesome episode Kale cheers, have you ridden the Rocket Wide? such a sick board when its 3 foot, 2+1 set up with the MR fins, cant get off mine i love it.
U got sack Kale. Not an easy task. I think out of fairness n understanding to any level surfer it would be more evenly beneficial to separate thrusters from twins n quads because of how much they change what each board can do in everyday conditions, barrel sections, air sections, etc. In other reviews from different you tubers I’ve noted some high level surfers don’t or hardly ride twins. I think ur next gig is worlds best Twin Thruster Quad 5 fin convertible to all fin set ups is a must! Thank u for sharing ur honesty n hard work w all surfers across the surfing community.
You can really see what you mean when you point out the flaws of each board matched with the footage, great little series mate and awesome channel, I think it’s time I book a trip down to urban surf soon 🤙
Fantastic work and huge effort Kale. I do feel like the Will board would have benefited from a different set of fins... Looks like you are using some PC Carbon Performer fins which are very stiff... with that outline and rocker, a Reactor template and maybe something more flexy would have freed up that board a bit? Maybe next time you do this test, you could ask the shapers what fins they recommend for the board they are sending?
Thanks Kale. I’m early intermediate and focusing more on snap turns and manoeuvres. Looking at picking up the twinny, I’ll let the company know. See you in the lineup 🤙🏽
The 3 episode series is a blast! So much work involved into this surfboard competition with a "sharp" eye and objective judgement 😉. The filming, production and video quality are super great! All review should be released like this. Glad those boards made it to the finals as they were incredible from their first appearance. Thank you for all the time you took for us to pick which surfboard is the best on the market! 🙌
Definitely going to look into getting the Album twinny after this. I've been looking for a shorter board as a beginner/intermediate for a while as I'm progressing but been afraid to commit to one, even considered the baron at one point but that Album board looked insane! Awesome series, can't wait to see more!
thanks for this concept mate and thank you for putting so much hard work in ! I found the concept pretty exciting. I've been watching your vids since begin'îg and i never saw you surf better than with this sharp eye model. You're totally ripping. I will definitely have a close look on this model pretty soon
Well after this comprehensive review along with being the Stab in the Dark winner, I’m ready to order a sharpeye. I’m assuming yours is PU and not darkarts like Taj’s and curious what fins you rode in it as well? Thanks for an epic 3 part series, appreciate the stoke; cheers mate!
Food for thought - really appreciate you making think about the next step in my surfing evolution as I definitely need to consider myself an intermediate these days.
Nice work Kale! Great series. Great to see the footage reflecting that the sharpeye posed no hindrance to your surfing. The others put up a fight sometimes. Clearly distinctive! Any reason there was no JS contestants? Would of loved to see a monsterbox thrown into the mix.
it's great that you share various reasons why each book has its benefits. There are alot of other variables, the conditions, skill level and size of the surfer.
Good job Kale -not bad for an Ozzie haha, my takeaway was watching you surf smaller waves with speed to be able to put in alot of turns. Nice one keep up the good work
With all the new boards and shapes available today this truly was very helpful resource for me. I'm coming back to surfing after about a 10-year hiatus, I'm 57 and have been surfing for 50 years, wow that sounds crazy to say that! I currently have my old dominator, recently bought a Machado seaside and I've got a 7.2 Torq that I bought just to get me back into surf shape. Like riding a bike it's starting to come back, the little frustrating being a Florida surfer with the inconsistency. But anyway I'm looking for that go to board for my Costa Rican trips that will be in my near future, and I'm going to give the sharp eye some serious consideration.
Kale, you're a beast! Great idea for a review and well done, sir. I'm super surprised that two relatively new comers to the surfboard world were your top favs. Honestly, I had written Album off as a 3rd tier board maker, but maybe I should give them more thought next time. I have to say hearing you call yourself an "average Joe" surfer is a bit of a stretch. You rip mate! I've been surfing 35+ years and I"m not scribing arcs half as good as you much less doing air reverses. Loving the vlogs and can't wait to see more. Cheers!
Love it Mate!!! boards are almost perfected now, once you have that perfect allrounder, its gold!! i love to experiment with assyms and weird boards but love having that go-to board when the waves are big and working
Awesome and very informative review. There are so many opportunities with this type of board review for the common punter. I think you are a very good surfer and better than most common folk. A suggestion would be if you continue similar vlogs would be a similar board review for more intermediate surfers/boards, medium length boards, fishes etc. Keep up the great work. Love the vids.
Hey Kale. Looks like all is epic! Will get the Album board😁. Surfed alot with you in Sri Lanka 2013, staying at Surfbeach guest house. Been touring the globe with my music ever since incl 6 NZ tours. Peace. Me and Linn are now married and Linda just had a kid.🤙
Nice job Kale...Really well done! It was cool to watch you ride and evaluate so many great boards. Shout out to my friends @Album Surf. Way to go AlbumMatt! The Twinsman had Kale thinking long and hard between it and the Sharpeye. My son has LOVED his Album UTF twin, and I think now he knows what's next for him: a Twinsman freshie. Congratulations!
Always been a soul surfer myself comps never interested me but i got cheep boards but that was tha single fin twin and being a grom in newy wonderful times love your scientific research good on yu bro you've got that aloha spirit
I really love your videos. You bring a lot of value to the table. I am looking to buy a twinfin in the future, now I know which one. Keep up the good work!
Very enjoyable series. I am wondering... is there a downside to riding a board that feels effortless? What does effortless mean - that it is well tuned to your current style, level and fitness? Would you ever deliberately ride a board that felt difficult because you thought it would improve your surfing? Does it work that way?
Fantastic series. Fun to watch, informative, and best of all I am going with a Twinsman in the future. Will be letting Album I watched this production. Thanks Kale 🤙
The best surfboard in the lineup is the one that's having the most fun, because normally they're all board. Athankya.

In the footage it looked like a winner for.your style from day 1
