  • This week on Pete's Shop Makes I show you how I took a basic bench seat design, a few 2x4's and some plywood to make this stylish yet functional window bench seat with a large built-in storage compartment. It was a pretty simple little build where I show you some basic carpentry techniques, trying my hand at upholstery, and the struggles I had while trying to move this thing up a narrow and steep stairwell. All in all, it was a fun little build and I hope you all enjoy it. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them down below as I'm happy to answer each and every one. Thank you!

      Hey sorry for the late response James. I didn't receive any notification for this one for some reason. I apologize. Anyway...Sounds nice man. Seems like it should be a pretty straight forward build. Not sure what other tips or information I can really give you man and how much experience you have with carpentry and woodworking in general but I cant really think of anything else besides just start building and dont be afraid to make mistakes. We all screw up from time to time but 9 times out of 10 its something that can be fixed or covered up or whatever so just try and go into the build with realistic expectations and its always best to at least have some simple sketches or designs drawn up and always write down as many measurements as possible and if you have any experience and you're any good at using Sketch-up or anything like that you can always make a cut list prior to purchasing your wood which helps big time so you dont waste money or lumber. Of course it just depends on how much time you have or want to spend doing something like that. Other than that man, Good luck and as always, just hit me up and let me know if theres anything else I can do for ya. Ok, Talk to you later James!

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  4 года назад +3

      yes, they were put on to help hold the lid open for me till I could get the 3 hinges screwed into the frame. I was going to just leave them but ended up removing them for the video because I had all chrome hardware and those were brass so they didn't match plus they didn't work very well anyway either so ultimately just left them off for good. I've since installed 2 20lb air pistons for a slow closing lid. Hope that helps. Thanks for the question.

    Hi Pete - fantastic video on how to make the window bench seat. Did you use non-structural or structural pine for the frame? Thanks

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  4 года назад +2

      Hello James! Thanks for your question. Yes I used all construction grade 2x4s traditionally used for framing houses to make the skeleton frame of the window seat. I hope that answers your question and if you have any further, please don’t hesitate to ask. Thanks again!

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  4 года назад +2

      Wait, I think I misunderstood the first time. Are you referring to the 1x4s that I used as the trim on top? If so, then that was all just select grade pine I purchased from Lowe’s. It’s a little more pricey because its “select” meaning that there are no knots in it and it’s s4s meaning that all 4 sides have been surfaced which save me time from having to do all that prep myself so I could justify the cost that way. Ok I hope that’s what you were looking for. Again if I’m mistaken or if you have any other questions then please let me know and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible. Thanks.

    Hello, was this 1/2 inch plywood or 3/4? Thank you.

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  4 года назад +2

      I used 1/2in only for two reasons. 1st - To reduce the weight of the lid mainly but the piece as a whole also since I knew I would be the only one moving it up those stairs. 2nd - Just to allow a few extra inches of room inside the box for storage. I know it's not that much but I felt it was a valid enough reason. You certainly could use 3/4 but half is plenty strong enough since the lid was two layers screwed together making it 1in total and since it's stationary and not being moved around at all, 1/2in just made more sense cost wise. Sorry, I realize that was more of an answer than you asked for but just wanted to be as transparent as possible. Hope that helps and Thanks for the question.

    • @PetesShopMakes
      @PetesShopMakes  4 года назад +2

      No problem! I had the six 8ft long 2x4s you see me take off the rack in the beginning, already on hand so I didn't need to buy those. After I got the frames built up I went and I bought two 4x8 sheets of 1/2in birch sanded plywood and really only used about 1 and 1/3 of a sheet so I ended up with some extra and then just got a few 8 ft planks of 1x4 select pine boards for the top trim and then a couple lengths of the primered trim you see me nail onto the front. Then those two decorative rectangle frame pieces were two premade pieces from the door section at lowes. everything all came from lowes only because it happens to be a half-mile from my house but I'm sure you could get all that stuff at home depot or any other hardware/home center. That's pretty much all I needed besides the tools of course and paint and hole filler and caulk which I all had on hand. Alright, again I hope that helps and if you need any further assistance let me know. Have a nice day.

      +That Man Morgs that is a tree hut brand rosewood and ebony watch. Check out treehut.com for all kinds of wooden watches and sunglasses and other apparel. They have some pretty dope stuff. I own 3 of their watches and 2 pairs of sunglasses. Pretty reasonable prices and all handmade out of San Francisco. Not sponsored or anything, I just like their brand.

    Great stuff. Why spend 10 to 20K on furniture. Just get yourself a $10-15K woodshop (don't worry about the experience, that'll come for free through trial and error, lol) and make flawless furniture like he does.

    Pete,
    Last questions I promise ! I'm thinking of now making two bookcases to make a "built-in" look. Any plans/suggestions/pointers on the bookcase build?

      Are you wanting them to look like the ones in the video on either side of the bench seat?

      I have this super bare bones version I did for my buddy’s office a few years ago. It was really hard for me to do actually because it was very plain and boring and required little to no skill which isn’t how I typically like to build things but thats how he wanted it made so I couldn’t argue. you can check it here if you want and may find something helpful. if not I can give a more in depth answer later when I get home. ruclips.net/video/8b7Y3uj4FAo/видео.html

    Removing the spindle on the stairs would have helped get it up top.

      Danny Walton belive me I thought about it but just glad I was able to get it up in one piece and without having to dismantle my stair case because I had already removed all the hand rails and picture frames from the walls and that was good enough for me.

    - You Tube videos can be educational when basic instructions are spoken. Could have done without the "blaring" noisy music.

    As a musician, I have to say, I was totally incapable of focusing on the video...
    the music was too good (that first rock song..!)
    Edit #2: omg, the 2nd rock song is even better: Not Funny by Conditional

    What was all that. The purpose of a video is to show someone that is trying to DIY something is to explain what your doing not to go on a Merry go Round ride all that was not necessary.
