Two drummers. Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. You are listening to the greatest band America ever produced at the zenith of their super powers. Duane and Dickey was so in tune to each other and Oakley is a force of nature on the bass. And that voice of Gregg seals the deal.
There was a great variety to pick from, sometimes I would listen to Tull sometimes Yes sometimes the Allman Bros sometimes The Who or Zep or ZZ Top, etc etc etc
Yeah people the more you become truly aware of the talented musicians past n present on this earth the more it becomes apparent picking “favorites” is a fools errand. Don’t pick favorites because the next sound you hear may shatter your present beliefs. May the steps a person takes on their journey through the halls of musical greatness wear the soles down while uplifting the soul.. God truly must love us to bestow this ability to create and enjoy music. Thank you God.
he had a pretty tough youth first his father is murdered then at a young age he is shipped off to military school. The school was in my hometown and it was a tough school. Greatest Blues Band in many folk's opinion. Greg Allman's Keyboards and soulful vocals, along with brother Duane's top shelf slide guitar, and Dickie Betts creativity, are simply great. What a Band from the 60s and 70s.
Oh! NOW you're cookin with gas! The Allman Brothers started 48 miles east of where I was raised (Yes...I'm still here lol). If you love the blues and you love Rock then you can't go wrong with the Allman Brothers
The tracks on this live album are undisputed witness to the God given gifts of each musician that made up the Allman Brothers Band. We were gifted with this historical album after half a century it still hits our gut with the power of music. Thank you God.
That show at the Fillmore East was epic in a way that's no longer even possible...of course Duane Allman's guitar on Whipping Post is like some SRV before Stevie was even around 🎸😎
The Allman Brothers are my favorite band. Live at the Filmore east is by far their best album. Probably the best live recording ever. Stormy M9nday is my favorite song from that album! It takes me to church every time I hear it even after almost 50 years. I didnt hear it for the 1st time till around '76 or '77. lol
Saw most of the great bands more than once including The Allman Brothers. Live at the Filmore East is the best live album of all time. "One Way Out", always gives me chills.
The Allman Brothers Band was the best Southern Rock band ever. Greg Allman did all the vocals, played keyboard, and wrote most of the songs. Duane Allman was lead guitar and at that time was considered the number two guitar player, only behind Jimi Hendrix. The Fillmore East concert was their best live performance. They had too many great songs to mention.
Jaimoe and Butch Trucks are the two drummers, Gregg Allman on vocals and piano/organ. Duane Allman on guitar/slide, Dickie Betts on guitar. Berry Oakley on bass. I believe Thom Doucette played harmonica as he would join in with the band from time to time. Duane and Berry both died in separate motorcycle crashes early on. Probably the best guitar duo of all time with Dickie and Duane. Try out “Outskirts of Town”, “Not my Cross to Bear”, and “Whipping Post”. Also Duane put out a version of “Goin Down Slow” that has some of the best guitar work that I have ever heard. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your channel.
Now that is the blues/southern rock! My first concert, 16 years old in Boston Mass. They are amazing. Zeppelin has always been my favorite band. Santana, Allman brothers and many more come after. Music brings me joy! We all sparked to this! it' a mesmerizing experience. You'll be sitting there for about 30 minutes after!
In my opinion the greatest blues song ever recorded. And Duane Allman is the greatest guitar player of all time. He only lived to age 24. But what he did in that short amount of time is truly amazing. He was a session guitar player for top R&B acts like Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. He is the most versatile guitarist . Just listen to him play slide on Statesboro Blue and One Way Out and then hear him pick on Blue Sky. I agree with others. You should listen to Whipping Post (studio version) next if you have not already reacted to it.
Dickie Betts was far more technical than Duane. Sorry...I LOVE DUANE ..but the heavy work was done by Dickie . Duane was the greatest SLIDE GUITARIST...Dickie on One Way Out .....is the lead guitarist 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸. They all admitted Dickie was the best. But ..the band was a guitar band..two and three lead guitarists
@@peterbartolomeo9574 It wasn't one better than the other they were both phenoms. Duane the more rick blues Dickie jazz and country and they learned from each other. When I wanted to rockout listen to Duane whenI wanted to learn something listen to Dickie.
Thanks for reminding me why I DID NOT have a "favourite band". But if I had to make up a top 5...nah, screw it, can't even do that. We were truly blessed in the late 60s and 70s with music.
The band is Duane Allman- lead guitarist and slide guitarist. Dicky Betts is the second guitarist. Barry Oakley bass player. Gregg Allman keyboards and guitarist, usually acoustic. J.J. 'Johanny Johanson' (Jaimoe) drummer and percussionist. Butch Trucks drums, etc..
Chin-Fro-Pick = "Brushes." Allman Bros has TWO drummers. The Allman Brothers Band were an American rock band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969[3] by brothers Duane Allman (founder, slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass guitar), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums).

This entire album slays it. Great blues from a bunch of boys with a great story to go along with it. Drumming is legend. Ask anyone who ever saw the Allmans in a live show.
My all time favorite band! They sit on a pedestal no other group has been able to top. Stormy Monday was written by T Bone Walker but the Brothers covered it and I think it is the best cover
BEEN GONE TOO LONG is a must listen to! ABB has so many songs. Also, guy on drums using brushes is JAIMOE. I believe only he and Dicky Betts are still with us.
Southern Rock was black-influenced, blues dominated music. So many tracks of old R&B that you love, you'd never know they were backed by all-white artists in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. This song here was an old Elmore James cut. Southern Rock was born in Muscle Shoals, when iconic black artists were backed by white artists like Duane Allman, the Swampers, and others -- who earned their stripes by garnering the respect of black legends like Aretha, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, the Staples -- and so on. That's how it happened. All they wanted was to do a good job for those they idolized, and in return those icons gave them a new kind of music that was their own. That's the beauty of music and its universal nature.
Allmon Brothers Band was from Macon, GA, my home state, and we’re pretty proud of them down here. This is my favorite song of theirs and favorite album. Thanks for sharing Van. Glad you enjoyed it.
Sweet version. Never any half assed efforts from this ensemble. They are the cream on top. Southern rockers are born with instruments in hand, I've long believed.
Those sticks are called BRUSHES, they're strands of steel wire pulled into a handle for that softer sandy beat. And the Allman Brothers have always rocked TWO drummers. Mr.Johnnie "Jaimo" Johnson, and Mr. Butch Trucks.
I was in ninth grade, and "Live at the Fillmore" was THE Bible for thousands of us young guitarists. Every note of every song is permanently impressed into my brain. Not just guitarists, either - if you put it on at a party a large percentage of people in my high school (22%? 30%?) could SING THE FUCKIN' GUITAR SOLOS! Like, nutty - No shit - straight up honest. I don't specifically remember the John F. Kennedy hit, I was like 5 years old, but I INDELIBLY and exactly remember the morning after Duane Allman died. It just seemed... _impossible._ I am SO glad this is coming up and around in the world again. You'll work your way through what we now can glim as an absolute Golden Age, so: I'm gonna go off the rails & take a sharp turn suggesting the next album. And that was - the ONLY music with enough WHAMMY to wean me off that Allman Bros tit - "BIRDS OF FIRE" by John McLaughlin's MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA. Absolutely another world changer, you might should put the ambulance number on your speed dial if you get bouncy thataways.... It's kinda got that heroin/oral sex vibe, even if you don't "like" it the first time it'll just KEEP COMING BACK AROUND, like a fuckin' ghost you can't shake - once you let it in the door it can't EVER leave. I could play Igno and say "well after all, it's just music it can't HURT you" - but I'd be lying, this shit could KILL weaklings. the Mahavishnu Orchestra's live album "Between Nothingness and Eternity" is maybe TOO hairy for now, but: now that you KNOW... heh heh heh....
I think you had the same reaction to this song that I did when I was about 17. I always liked the blues but this song showed me what the blues is really like. I love this song and the whole album is killer!!
THANK YOU for doing this superlative Allman Bros. song! No one reacts to it and I’m thrilled to see it appreciated as it should be. Glad you enjoyed, it is like having a great meal it’s so good!!
Mostly a blues band at their roots. This tune is a good example - Bobby "Blue" Bland and T-Bone Walker were among their influences, along with of course Muddy Waters and others of that period. A significant influence for many southern bands was that 30s-60s blues music of the south; kind of an interesting background given the racial biases and segregation of the time. There is a documentary about the Muscle Shoals studios that discusses that a bit. While Skynyrd was more to the country side of the southern rock genre, they too had some pretty significant blues influences. These and other groups of that time introduced me, white suburbanite from the northeast to the joys of the roots of rock and roll - like Muddy said: "The Blues had a Baby and they named it rock n roll". My wife was fascinated when we watched "Cadillac Records" - I know of every musician in the movie and recognized most right away. If you want to hear some of the more rocking side of the ABB blues, it's hard to beat Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues" (also covered on this album) and their cover of "One Way out", recorded in this session and showing up on a later album. Can't go wrong there.
The ABs always had two drummers. Butch Trucks and Jaimo Johannson. Both of them played a full 8 or 9 piece drum set together. That also helped give that something extra sound.
You're my favorite to watch my brother.. you're one of the rare reviewers that truly GET classic rock bands, aka, Allman brothers, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. Those are my top 3 actually but I'm sure you like them as well.
This was a cover the ABB did for 50 years. Dig deep into the Allman Brothers Band hole catalog you won't be disappointed they wrote the songs of my life
Loved watching you move your head listening to the guitar solos. I remember my friends wearing headphones and doing exactly the same thing when we listened to the same tracks 50 years ago. Enjoy the whole album -- and every other one by the Allmans (possibly my favorite band).

Greatest Blues Band in many folk's opinion. Greg Allman's Keyboards and soulful vocals, along with brother Duane's top shelf slide guitar, and Dickie Betts creativity, are simply great. What a Band from the 60s and 70s.
Please, please go down this rabbit hole of the ALLMAN Brothers! ✌️
Oh! NOW you're cookin with gas!
The Allman Brothers started 48 miles east of where I was raised (Yes...I'm still here lol).
If you love the blues and you love Rock then you can't go wrong with the Allman Brothers
The original was by T-Bone Walker. 1940s-50s.
The Greatest Southern Rock Band Ever.
Absolutely 💯
They had two excellent drummers and two brilliant lead guitar players in the band when they recorded this.
Jackie's got great taste. (check the version of Whipping Post from this album, it's intense as hell)
This is arguably the greatest live album of all time. In memory of Elizabeth Reed is my favorite.
Only two remaining band members left, sadly.
Now that is the blues/southern rock! My first concert, 16 years old in Boston
Mass.
@@peterbartolomeo9574Agree 100%. Blue sky? Dickie. Jessica? Dickie. Ramblin man? Dickie…
@@peterbartolomeo9574 It wasn't one better than the other they were both phenoms. Duane the more rick blues Dickie jazz and country and they learned from each other. When I wanted to rockout listen to Duane whenI wanted to learn something listen to Dickie.
The Altman brothers are my favorite band all time. Zeppelin is up there for me but keep listening to ABB and you’ll have a new favorite soon enough
You know what I love about your reactions. You Aint hearing this song. Your Feeling it. I sparked one up for you my brother. Peace 😎
Thanks for reminding me why I DID NOT have a "favourite band". But if I had to make up a top 5...nah, screw it, can't even do that. We were truly blessed in the late 60s and 70s with music.
Top 5 discussions are best across the bar, with friends and colleagues...
Great brim
The band is Duane Allman- lead guitarist and slide guitarist. Dicky Betts is the second guitarist. Barry Oakley bass player. Gregg Allman keyboards and guitarist, usually acoustic. J.J. 'Johanny Johanson' (Jaimoe) drummer and percussionist. Butch Trucks drums, etc..
The Eagle flies on Friday. Back to the blues, the mother of rock and roll.
When they were still a local band they called the band The Allman Joys. Our singers brother played Bass guitar for them then.
There are two drummers Jaimie and Butch Trucks and the drums sticks are called brushes.
Jaimoe
@@marymargaretmoore9034 His birth name was Johnny Lee Johnson. He changed it to Jai Johanny Johanson. But answered to Jaimoe.
Sorry spell check got me.
@@jeffcocco7123 No problem
Van- you’re gonna love the king of harmonica blues- the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
Awesome... Check out 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed ' !!!
The Eagle Flies On Friday=Payday.....This is from Live At Fillmore East. Listen to it. Two Drummers-Jaimoe and Butch Trucks.....ABB are talented, skillful, passionate, soulful, jazzy and funky....The greatest Band ever assembled....
This entire album slays it. Great blues from a bunch of boys with a great story to go along with it. Drumming is legend. Ask anyone who ever saw the Allmans in a live show.
Gregg Allman, the best white blues singer ever.
My all time favorite band! They sit on a pedestal no other group has been able to top. Stormy Monday was written by T Bone Walker but the Brothers covered it and I think it is the best cover
BEEN GONE TOO LONG is a must listen to! ABB has so many songs. Also, guy on drums using brushes is
JAIMOE.
It just gets ya right down deep in your soul! Loved the reaction
“ Ouch!” said Mama Allman.
@@TheDivayenta LOL....and Mama danced thru all deliveries. Pain be damned.
One thing you'll notice about the Allman Brothers. They never......ever.......get in a hurry. Never....
Sometimes it sucks getting old BUT I'm glad I was around to witnesses all the good music first hand!!
Oh ya, the boy can play.....You will enjoy everything they do.
You seem to like the Blues. Check out The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. They are Chicago Blues
Nice reaction.
This was a cover the ABB did for 50 years. Dig deep into the Allman Brothers Band hole catalog you won't be disappointed they wrote the songs of my life
playing with them turkey basters, Jaimoe & Butch Trucks.
Loved watching you move your head listening to the guitar solos. I remember my friends wearing headphones and doing exactly the same thing when we listened to the same tracks 50 years ago. Enjoy the whole album -- and every other one by the Allmans (possibly my favorite band).
Hey Van, who says that can't have 3 or more favorite bands, each having their own musical greatness. This song epitomizes the blues.
Of course any person can have more than one favorite band/song/album; it all depends on the mood they're in, eh?
