I had the great pleasure of seeing The Allman Brothers 3 times before Duane died, once after. I was at this performance. They had a lot of influences from gospel, to T-Bone Walker, to James Brown, to Miles Davis. In my life I've seen perhaps 500 live music acts and they remain the most exciting live R&&/R&B act I've ever seen. They never failed to deliver. From this same performance do "Stateboro Blues", "One Way Out", and from a later live performance, "Don't Keep Me Wondering". RIP Berry, Duane, Greg and Butch. We still miss you.
The Allman Brothers Band were an American Treasure. No joke. I hear that. There's definitely soul in there. Along with blues, rock, jazz & country.

The back and forth between Greg, singer, and Duane, guitarist, is called "call and response". Led Zeppelin does this a lot with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page🎶🎸🎵🎸

Call-and-response originally comes from Black gospel music.
The early Grateful Dead circa 66-71 also did it with Garcia on guitar and Pig singing his heart out.
They were f***ing monsters. Berry Oakley, the bass player, came up with that opening riff, which he stole from Rachmaninoff's Cello Concerto. Duane played like his soul was on fire. He was left handed, which is one of the reasons he had such incredible control on the frets. On the closing night at the Fillmore East, they went on at Two in the morning and played straight through until Seven. Also, one of their favorite traveling albums was 'Kind Of Blue; by Miles Davis and that whole set was as close to perfect as music ever got. If you want to be the best, you have to steal from the best.
It is called Heavy Blues influence. A lot Rock Bands from that era where influenced by blues. Led Zeppelin as well. Love the Channel and the reactions😁❤️

Your James Brown reference isn’t out of line. I think I’ve read Duane want two drummers because James Brown had two drummers. James was more funky, but he was certainly an influence on Duane.
The call and response between voice and guitar is straight out of gospel music. I think it’s been said that the blues and gospel had a love child and they named it rock and roll.
Much is said about the musicians that died at age 27. Hendrix Joplin Morrison among others. Duane died at 24. The bass player, Berry Oakley, died a year later also at 24. I wish we could have had those two for another three years.

The Allman Brothers are the ones that brought the blues to southern rock. Started by Gregg Allman (singer/organ) and Duane Allman (lead/slide guitar), they created some of greatest music ever recorded (in my opinion) before Duane Allman tragically died in a motorcycle accident in '71. Duane Allman is widely regarded as the greatest slide guitarist to ever play. Their song Dreams is my personal favorite, I think you guys would enjoy it too.
Along with Dickey Betts , Butch Trucks, I'm sorry but I don't know the other drummer or bass player.
@@jerryadkins5418 Other drummer was Jai Johanson and bass was Berry Oakley, who unfortunately also passed away in a motorcycle accident a year after Duane.

Had to add my 2 cents worth...reading about "Whipping Post" having a James Brown influence reminded me of Gregg once saying when he first started singing his mother (Geraldine) said that he "sang like James Brown without lips". The Brothers were certainly as tight as the best bands that James Brown fronted - The Brothers just loved taking the music "out there" when playing live. My motto: " there's The Brothers and then there's all the others".

One of the best live performances ever. This is probably their magnum opus. Southern , Blues and Rock fusion and performance was on another level.
The version from Fillmore East,that flows from a 22 minute Whipping Post into a 34 minute Mountain Jam,is the magnum opus for American music period in my opinion.

Macon, Georgia is the connection. It has an amazing musical history. Otis Redding and Little Richard were definitely born there, James Brown claimed to be, and The Allman Brothers Band made it their home base. It’s not that big, so the musicians there all influenced each other.
Maybe the best jam band of all time. They played rock, jazz, blues, fusion. You name it and they played it. So much fricken talent!!!!

The ABB is one of my fav live bands!! They are a heavy blues-influenced jam band with elements of Jazz, Southern Rock, Rock & Roll, Country, and oh so jammy. Check out _Dreams, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Blue Sky, Jessica, One Way Out, Statesboro Blues, Trouble No More, Soulshine, Revival, Stormy Monday, and Hot 'Lanta_ just to name a few...The Allman Brothers are a fantastic rabbit hole to jump into. These guys are the best Blues Band of all time. Back in 1971, when I went to Vietnam, some of the Black guys in my outfit turned me on to The Allman Brothers Band. I've loved their soulful music and vocals of Keyboards player Greg Allman, and the great slide guitar of Brother Duane Allman. Sadly, Duane died in a motorcycle accident just a couple of years later in 1973, I think. Greg passed a few years ago in his mid 70s. Please play more of this great Blues Band.
There’s a lovely gravesite in Macon where three of the guys are buried - Greg, Duane and Barry.

Simply put: One of the greatest bands to ever walk on a stage. Talented, skillful, soulful, funky, jazzy, bluesy, and rockin..ABB... James Brown dug them and they dug him...For som ereason, the camera man pays little attention to Dickie Betts ,even though he splits leads with Duane as normal...
That similarity you're hearing to the great James Brown is called "Soul".

The blues gets bounced back and forth between England and the US over the years and the influences tend to sharpen, and in the Allmans case, they definitely introduced elements of progressive rock and jazz fusion as you can see here. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed is another one, an instrumental in this vein as well. Really improves your musical vocabulary listening and playing along on your instrument with these!

There is definitely soul in Gregg Allman's voice. I think it's an underrated part of the group.

Duane Allman guitar, Gregg Allman organ, songwriter and vocals, unbelievably talented drummers, guitarists, Southern Rock Jam band. Just as great today as it was in 1970.
Gregg greatly admired James and a lot of other blues and soul singers.
This band had two great lead guitarists, any one of which on their best day could leave Eric Clapton in the dust....
Gregg Allman singer, song writer and keyboards was alone, couldn’t find pen and paper so he wrote this song on an ironing board with burnt matches. Duane Allman first lead guitar, Dicky Betts second lead guitar, Berry Oakley bass, Butch Trucks drums, Jai Johnny Johanson drums. The next year on October 29, 1971 Duane Allman was killed on his motorcycle. One year and 12 days later on November 11th 1972 Berry Oakley died from a motorcycle accident 3 blocks from where Duane died. It was said that Berry was lost without Duane, drank to much. He initially refused help but was rushed to the hospital hours later with cerebral bleeding from a skull fracture.
One of my favorite bands right there. So glad y'all enjoyed that. "Ain't Wasting Time No More" from the Eat a Peach album is a good one. "Statesboro Blues" from the Filmore East live is another. But they got a ton of great music.
You gotta check out the band Gov't Mule. Kinda like the Allman Brothers on steroids.
Duane kills the guitar and Gregg plays piano and sings. They were some of the founders of southern rock. Gregg plays a song by himself with an acoustic guitar, it's called "come and go blues". Great song👍🏼🔥
They're more of a blues-based jam band than anything else. "Southern Rock" influences but so much more than just simply Southern Rock. I think Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, The Doobie Brothers, Molly Hatchet are more straightforward Southern Rock. The ABB has a more complex sound imho

Good review. Whipping Post is a great southern rock song. Here is a short list of some others since you like it: The Outlaws - Ghost Riders in the Sky, Marshall Tucker Band - Can’t You See, Blackfoot- Train, Train and Eagles SevenBridges Road. They are all very, very good. I had to revise the list because they already did Free Bird. 😀

Is the video sped up? It sounds faster. Yes, it absolutely does sound like James Brown. Why would that offend anyone?? The Allman Brothers combined Country Rock with R & B got their unique sound and started a new trend. Greg, Duane, and Dickie Betts all wrote music. Betts had a more country sound, Greg wrote his combo sound, and Duane was a slide guitar genius. The Allman Brothers is a deep rabbit hole.
The Allman Brothers literally invented southern rock. It’s a beautiful mix of blues, rock, and some gospel roots flavoring the stew. This band stands alone.
One drummer would need to be an octopus to play all of that. Allman Brothers had two drummers, sometimes three. Duane's guitar is crazy good, isn't it? Jimmy Hendrix and Duane were the two best guitarists of their time, and both died within a year of each other. Both in their 20's, what a loss.
Main guitar player is Duane Allman arguably the greatest guitar player ever, it's always an argument between him, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan or so.
You must check out the Frank Zappa “tribute” to this band - Frank’s is an unbelievable version; there again, he is/was the best guitarist in the world ever being my opinion. But, wait for others to comment upon. In the UK here...
One of the things The Allman Brothers did was master the art of playing dual synchronized lead guitars. You can only hear it a little bit at the end of this song but some songs they do it for much or most of the song.

My #1 band of the three greatest southern rock bands of all time. Nothing but pure talent and the best music ever. Try “Fillmore East” considered one of the best live albums ever recorded. Hahahahahahahaha, James Brown? LOL.....thank you needed that. The guitarist are Duane Allman the blond and Dickey Betts the dark hair. Two of the best duet pairs with their uncanny ability to play off each other, knowing exactly where the other one would go next. Gregg Allman on keys and lead vocals was know for his raspy, bluesy vocals. Drummers were Jaimoe “Jai” Johanson and Butch Trucks. Bassist was Barry Oakley. I was lucky enough to see these guys in concert numerous times and I was never let down. They were unbelievable!
One of my favorite things about them is they had an African American drummer , i met him a few years ago. in 1970 they were clearly ahead of their times!!! Love it

Duane Allman said there's no Southern rock. They did not like being called a Southern rock band They felt they were more than that Because rock & roll was born in the South it's like saying...... Rock Rock.... Not Southern rock

The Allman Brothers are amazing. My dad and uncle listen to them all the time. I also love Gregg's solo stuff, his interviews, like the one with Dan Rather, his stories of his addictions and problems really helped me, watch the video song for adam with him and jackson browne. Multi colored lady, these days, melissa, live in Macon, too many things I can recommend or think of, the tribute videos, etc.
James Brown from Augusta, GA. and the Allman Brothers Band just 2 hours away in Macon Ga.,, so you do have that great southern soulful voice!

The Allman Brothers Band were no joke...the boys came to play. They have a huge collection of songs to be reacted to.
This is the version recorded in the theater. The remixed it later improving the sound. That version is on Live at The Fillmore and is 26 minutes long. THAT'S the one you want to listen to.

Man....I wasnt born yet but can tell all day long these video's just dont do the actual live show justice. Hey, aint no reason for anyone to get offended if you hear James Brown's influence...we all hear different aspects of influences....and he is for sure in the mix in all genre's
💯 I missed getting to see ABB when Duane was alive, but can attest to the fact that this doesn't do justice to their live shows. ABB are one of my all time faves, and I've seen them live a lot. Some of the best of the jam bands.

My fav from the Allman's. Duane "Skydog" Allman was in rare form that night. Tragic he died so young, for such a silly reason. None of the originals left, but Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks do an excellent Whipping Post. Good post.

ABB was, in fact, directly influenced by James Brown... the band arrangement specifically. So that was a great intuitive comparison.
