    Gregg was only 21 and I believe Duane was only 22 when this song was recorded. The musical maturity was amazing. Gregg's vocals sound like they come from a life of trouble and woe. You'd never think he was still such a young man at that time.

    Listen to, One Way Out, if you wanna hear how Gregg got over his pain of this loss. 😁😁 I'd suggest the studio first only bc in that legendary concert at the Filmore, his vocals are no where near as clear and loud as the studio. Seemed his mic was turned down. But still an amazing experience that you must take at some point.

    Great rock band from the 70's that mixed blues, jazz & country music in their sound. They had lots of great songs such as "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed", "Statesboro Blues", "Blue Sky", "Ramblin' Man" etc. One of my favorites is their instrumental "Jessica" which was written by guitarist Dickey Betts & named after his daughter.

    • @mariejustme
      @mariejustme 3 месяца назад

      In 1977, I named my daughter after Jessica as well. The Allman’s have been my touchstone since 1973. It probably helps that they lived and recorded here in Macon, GA so I saw them a lot, along with every other southern rock band. What a time to be alive! 🤟🏼

    Little history. Bill Graham was the number one rock promoter during the 60s and early 70s. He was known for owning the Fillmore East and the Fillmore West plus a couple other ballrooms. He played everybody, soul Rock jazz Motown and sometimes he would mix it up in the same night. So he heard everybody and he said the Allman Brothers were his favorite band and had them close to Fillmore East on the last night. The live album is considered a masterpiece and in the national archives. On that album you will find a 22 minute version of this song, Whipping Post. Now that you've listened to the studio version you should seriously listen to the live version from "at Fillmore East".

      Thje Allman Brothers, especially Gregg, would disagree with you about the "Southern Rock" monicker. They were offended by the term. In Gregg's own words, rock originated in the south, so to call a band Southern Rock is "like calling it Rock Rock." They were an amazing blues-rock band that included bits of jazz and country infused into it.

    Here are a few great studio tracks.
    Dreams-first album. Track right before Whipping Post
    Revival-Great song off the second album.
    Stand Back-Eat a Peach album. One of Duane Allman’s last recordings before he was tragically killed in a motorcycle crash at 24.
    Rolling Stone had Duane ranked #9 and #2 on their top 100 guitarists of all time lists. He is also the primary guitarist on Layla from Derek and the Dominoes which you heard not too far back. He paired up with Eric Clapton for that album

    I'd say you did the right thing listening to the studio version of this first because Gregg's vocal gets a little lost in the chorus on the live version, particularly where he sings, "Sometimes I feel Like I've been tied to the whipping post, tied to the whipping post..." which of course, is obviously the most important part of the lyrics to hear in this song.

    ONE OF THEIR SONGS YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO IS "ITS NOT MY CROSS TO BEAR" I met them when I was 14. I'm 69 now and was friends with Greg Alllman til the day he passed. He sang with my band one night after we finished a TV show. He did one episode, and it was when the new season premiered. My band played after the show aired and he came strolling into the ballroom and pulled me off stage, gave me a hug and asked if he could sit in for a few songs. This was one that our band knew, so it's special to me. But for a fun song, listen to Turn your lights down low and Statesboro Blues. You will love all of them. Thanks, Kathy ❤
