Yes girl, so happy you found your forever home. I'm a fellow Level IV NICU Nurse as well...three years under my belt and I have loved every second of it. People always have a misconception of NICU nurses and believe that all we do is cuddle and love on babies and our shifts are a walk in the park. In some instances we do, when they are on their way to reaching more milestones to get ready to graduate from the NICU but...majority of the time we are caring for very fragile and critical micropreemies and preemies. I can't wait for you to give others a glimpse of what an actual day in the life of a NICU nurse truly is. Looking forward to following your journey into transitioning into becoming a NICU nurse. If you have any questions, hit a girl up. Congrats girl!

I think working nights makes it worse. But some people on my unit love it! The idea of being a nicu nurse sounds cool to me, but actually being in it can be rough and stressful. And I often feel like I don’t have enough time to provide the care I would like to provide bc of all that I have going on in one shift. What did you end up doing that you liked?

dreamergirlbaby I worked in a level 3 NICU. it was ok in the beginning, definitely a huge learning curve in comparison to adults. What was most challenging for me was starting over as if I were a new nurse and feeling like I knew nothing. It made dealing with parents especially difficult. It was also pretty slow, I think, compared to working with adults (I did telemetry/PCU fast paced units before NICU). In my NICU I was required to work nights for a year prior to working day shift so it was quite uneventful a lot of the time, mainly just monitoring the babies overnight. Most of the stuff happened during the day. And over the course of just a few months, I found it started to get repetitive. Aside from that, I didn’t really appreciate the culture of the place I worked. Catty nurses at night living up to the “nurses eat their young” stigma that I hadn’t experienced elsewhere. I work in critical care now, with adults. I definitely feel a lot more confident/competent in this area 🙂

I would apply to a NICU residency or work as a postpartum nurse if you want to the NICU. Postpartum-> L&D nurse here! I started in postpartum and I worked with well babies and occasionally floated to the special care nursery. But as L&D, we just deliver and most hospitals assume you’re not comfortable with sick babies only well babies because if a baby is sick after delivery, a NICU nurse will come to your delivery and take over. ❤️ Hope this helps

Congrats on making it to the NICU!!! I watched your live the other day and knew it had to be the NICU. I love that you pointed out that each step in the journey is important. As a nursing student, sometimes we can get so caught up on our desires and try our best to avoid detours. But all of it contributes to your personal and professional growth.

The NICU has always been my dream job. I did step down with adults for a year, and then 6 months on a pediatric unit before I was offered a position in the NICU. Now I am almost one year in and I love it so much. I am grateful for my past experience regardless. Congrats ! I'm so glad your dreams are coming a reality.

I’m soooooo happy for you!! I’ve been watching you since you were in nursing school, and I also want to go into the NICU. I’m in the first block of nursing school so I have a ways to go.

Congrats girl!!! I’m always following but never commented I’m happy you got your dream job. I’m taking prerequisites for nursing, I’m a PCA in postpartum and my goal is nicu as well. There always pulling me to med surge cause there short staffed which makes me wonder if I should stick it out I work 5 days out of 2 weeks part-time and they don’t allow mother baby pca’s to be contingent. I’m afraid that part time would be to much when I get accepted to a program. I don’t want to lose my position because I’m already so close to the nicu. I’m going to start a phlebotomist program this summer to better my skill and it will be a back up job as well. That’s my dilemma right now. YOU ARE SO INSPIRING FOR GOING AFTER YOUR DREAM I AM DEFINITELY FOLLOWING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS!!!! GOD BLESS YOU!!!❤️
