Glad to hear this. I imagine I will work this product into my management moving forward. I bought enough for 500 treatments. Should easily get me through this spring.
Bruce, i have used super DFM for many years and i have found it to be very effective treating for keeping my bees healthy. always treat them before wintertime. you should apply it on the ends of your top bars only. great product. good luck, i know you will continue to use it.
Hey thanks for the comment. Question: why the ends of the top bars only? The instructions said to dust the bees. But I really don’t know what I am doing. In the past when I have used terramycin I applied it on the ends of the top bars as you describe.
@@brucesbees Bruce, i have worked with Indiana nee inspector for the last 12 years and when we started using it, the instructions said to put in on both ends of the top bars, maybe they have changed the way they want it to be applied, as long as the bees eat it, that is the important thing, after using it for many years i have not read the instructions any longer. LOL 😆 😆
I always pick two frames in the middle and just spread down the center top of each frame. When I check the hive the next day they will be lined up on both sides of each line of probiotics consuming it. Either way it probably doesn't matter. It was great seeing you at Hive Life sir. Great videos as always.
Wow Bruce! Girls looking good! Interested to see how the probiotics work! It was really good to see you again and glad you had a safe trip home!! You e come a long way, your work has paid off!!
Ha Bruce I use hive alive in my patties and my syrup all the time it works great never tried what u are using before I also have got some of that rocket fuel that Ian and Kamon have bragged on going to try that this year but I think it is a good thing what ever helps the bees
Thank you Bruce perfect timing I have been dealing with real wet conditions here in SW WA, I think this might give my girls the boost they need to help to get them back on track.
I'm behind on watching videos but I was curious if you did a follow up to see if the Super DFM had much effect on the weaker hives? Thanks for sharing!
Have you had any more dysentery in the hives? The probiotic should help those who ingest it but, with as many bees as you have in those hives, there may not be enough to go around. Great seeing you again at Hive Life. Roll Tide!
Not that I know of. If you look at the very beginning of the video you can see that there was a minimal amount on the box that I cleaned off last week. So the problem seems to be getting better. Maybe the probiotics will help take them to the next level. Yes it was great seeing you at Hive Life. Roll Tide!!!
Yeah me either but I figured, why not? I had some colonies I was concerned about and was at the conference with the product right in front of me. Pulled the trigger. No time like the present! Will be interesting to see what happens.
Great video. I use EM for my cattle, chickens and racing pigeons. As well as kombucha. Never thought of putting it into my bee water. Going to give it a go now.
There's a lot commercial operations swear by that stuff.. I tried that hive alive not sure the results yet . yup can't hurt .. be interested in those tests results.. they come back clean it's probably that strain from south Texas can't handle the cool weather..
Not sure about that. Here are the directions: Use 1 Tbsp. ... Dust dry SuperDFM over top bars of the brood nest or use the applicator to disperse through the bottom entrance. Supplement in spring, summer dearth periods, fall, and during migratory movements. Supplement every 1-2 weeks during spring buildup, nectar dearth periods, stress and moving colonies.
Sometimes I wonder if their “gut” problems comes from what is fed? What happens to us when we eat too much sugar, or too much anything? All things in moderation.
Yeah it will be hard to tell, honestly, because these bees for the most part are looking pretty darn good. But I will try to focus on the ones that were sick and see how they rebound.
@@brucesbees You've also been feeding hive alive though right? Curious if the sickly bees that bounce back if it's because of one or the other or both. Enjoy watching either way.
Actually have not feed these bees Hive Alive. Have been spot feeding the production colonies some fondant. These bees have been fed some thin HFCS and more recently light sugar syrup (x3). Once the strep get colonies are gone to Cali I will focus on really fixing the weaker ones and direct more attention to the production bees. Will be using more Hive Alive fondant and syrup and spring approaches I am sure.
What do you think about using probiotics for bees?
Love that idea! Probiotics are preventive and it’s better to stay ahead of potential problems. I’d love to see the label of ingredients!

I should say I'm in the north and hives would crap out and die early march with no cleansing flights
The bees are looking good. See you Monday.
We have used it and believe in it. I use a hand crank flower sifter to spread it.
Good idea. I like it!
You’re doing a fine job applying it bruce. Even if its wonky they’ll spread it around.
Thanks John plan to apply it soon. I just have to find it lol. I put it away somewhere and can’t seem to find it. Might need to order more!
Looking good in Jan Bruce! Enjoyed meeting you at hive life! Take care!
Yes it was nice. Thanks for checking in Grayson.

I hear ya. The consumption is the important thing. I will reread the instructions but think it is probably ok either way. Thanks for checking in!
Awesome! would love to see an update in a few weeks
Wow Bruce! You got home from HL and went straight back to working with your bees. They look good! I will be curious to see how this helps.
Yes I did haha. Wanted to get that Super DFM on them asap! Was great to see you guys!

I have heard nothing but good reports from those who have used it though I know some don’t believe them to be effective.
It definitely couldn’t hurt and is not ridiculously priced. So might be worth a try.
@@brucesbees Ya that's what I was thinking plus I only need the small size.
1 to 1 powdered sugar and DFM has worked great for me

I actually did not do an official follow up. Should have done better.

Not familiar with EM. I assume it is a probiotic?
@@brucesbees EM are effective microbes. I can only find 2 articles on Google about EM and bees.
I use melaferaboost from David Bradshaw out of California. That’s also what Jose the California beekeeper uses

Don’t know that I have much South Texas influence. But will see what the tests say.
Hope it helps
Tried them all a few times, better off marking them to be requeened or culled out.
Do you feed regular granulated sugar water?
Typically yes. But have also used HFCS. Both work fine.
Could it be mixed with pollen patties or pollen sub to feed to them?
Not sure about that. Here are the directions:

Dust dry SuperDFM over top bars of the brood nest or use the applicator to disperse through the bottom entrance.
Supplement in spring, summer dearth periods, fall, and during migratory movements.

How about putting it in an old salt shaker, just add one dose at a time in the shaker.
I like it. Great idea.
As I recall Randy Oliver tested probiotics finding no benefit.
What have you been feeding, pollen?
I fed thin syrup and pollen sub. Open feeding.
