- In this video, Frederick Dunn interviews Dr. Vera Strogolova regarding Direct Fed Microbials aka Probiotics for honey bees.
What are they, and how do they work?
Direct Fed Microbials are of interest to many backyard and commercial beekeepers. It's all about the gut bacteria of bees as well as other farm animals and how to keep that healthy.
In some cases, SuperDFM-P801 can aid in coping with pesticides associated with commercial agriculture.

Absolutely love that you are doing these talks with the people that are the source of the expertise. Amazing that you can get these folks to sit down for an extensive talk. I appreciate your approach to the guests and that you always give them time to make any comments at the end of the talks that they may wish to add to the conversation. It is also interesting that you ask probing questions that you can see the guest thinking about the answer, not just some rote question with a canned answer. This topic is one that I have not paid so much attention to so far making this one a great expansion of knowledge in a new area. Many thanks to Dr. Strogolova and you for exploring this topic.
Wow Frederick, you're on a roll!!!! Thank you Strong Microbial's--I use and strongly believe in you so much. I feel it is one of two components that i use that I believe keeps my hive strong enough to be at best, varroa free, and at least, live with varroa without treatment. The other component I swear by, is one that I would recommend Frederick consider interviewing. Its Host Defense: Longevity Reishi Mycelium. Between Strong Microbial's being used once a month, and feeding Host Defense in my feed early spring and last fall, I have a winning combination that I swear by. I stumbled on both of them and feel I have found these two things as a suggestion for all beekeepers that truly works.

First year beekeeper both of my colonies have a 🏀 size cluster and I really do believe Super-DFM was the edge my 🐝 needed to get them through winter.
I am not sold on Probiotics, but i will give them a look. the paper should be a good read.
Remember that nothing has been published yet... I think it's worth waiting for those results, particularly if it's expensive. There is certainly plenty of anecdotal testimony from commercial and backyard beekeepers. I'll be very interested in the scientific findings when they are compiled :)
Fred, as always great video and really do appreciate the information you spread to backyard beekeepers. This video post was timely in that I recently found an entrance extender product called ProtectABee that want to try out, besides reducing robbing you can put powders like DFM in it so the bees walk over it and distribute it throughout the hive. I'm our bee club's Citizen Science lead and we do comparative studies to help our members. It's coming out this June and is currently in funding so we are goingtotest some of these out. Great video! Thank you Dr. Vera, it is a challenge running scientific studies with bees, especially with so many variables as you mention. I too am running a study and collecting research and its far more challenging than one thinks.. I had not much considered the use of probiotics with bees, but I now have some very interesting food for thought.. thank you

I have been beekeeping for five years and this is the first understandable explanation on this product in a video.
I am wondering if a beetle blaster with the top removed would also be a good delivery system. It could be placed right above the brood frames.

Hmmmm... not sure. Being that there is powdered sugar in the mix, I think they would go for it, but not sure if enough of the bees would spread it around. Interesting thought though :)
This was a wonderful and educational video. However, when I found out Bob Binnie uses super DFM, I was sold!
The Super DFM is beneficial when and if you're getting exposed to agricultural pesticides. If Bob is having great results with it, you can bet it's worth it. He's not about to waste time and money on something non-effective.

Coincidence- maybe- but all 10 of 10 of my hives came through winter- so far and last fall I did not expect 2-3 of them to make it. Yep- I was feeding SuperDFM. Probably not correctly but as I could.

Also, I bet the hive gate would hold some of the powder and force the bee's to walk through it.
I did think of that, but there is an entrance that is releasing very soon that is actually designed to deliver dry material to the hive... watch for that!

I was left with the feeling that any large scale studies using a structured scientific method were still lacking, leaving us with more testimonials than with concrete data to hang out hats on.
The microbes which typically colonize a honeybee gut (mostly in the rectum) are:
Snodgrassella alvi, Gilliamella apicola, Frischella perrara, Lactobacillus Firm 4, Lactobacillus Firm 5 and Bifidobacterium asteroides.
The list of microbes in the Super DFM products aren't the same.
How do these pass the bee crop to midgut, ileum, then rectum and stay viable?
Will they truly colonize in the honeybee gut/rectum?
Will they outcompete/interfere with the natural honeybee gut microbes?
I don't quite get how using avian and mammalian gut microbes in an insect quite works....and perhaps they don't.
Wasn't sure the question of "how do they work" was adequately answered.

I'm also waiting for formal studies and published results. I'm told that those are in the works. I also have many questions regarding how we quantify the results. There are commercial beekeepers providing anecdotle testimonies, but I also have questions regarding how they are understanding the results if they are treating every hive. Lab results are important, but should include independent analysis. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hi Buzzvance… it is indeed an interesting question. I take TCM prescribed due to my body status (wet/dry; cold/hot)… I am cold/wet/damp… no one seems to know the mechanism as to why these things work but have been used for more than 3000 years. Often not just one component is active but many working is combination.
The hunt is to find the active component… elusive because it is not one component but many working together. The sum of the individuals is less than the sum of all.
Im in milwaukee wisconsin. I use super dfm and hive alive. I use super dfm after mite treatments. I am a believer it helps them bounce back after treatment and get through winter.

Hi Fred, Many thanks again. So much interest in animal, human and insect gut biome these days. Interestingly it seems to be linked to soils as well. Maybe the Gaia Hypothesis in not just an hypothesis😉🤭
From my knowledge it seems there is a symbiotic relationship between microbes and mycelium… in soils, so why not gut flora? Thanks for pulling in Paul Stamets’ work on the mycelium approach. Maybe they will find a microbe like BT that is specific to VDM and kill them from within but not kill our bees.

I am very interested in talking with Paul... his bee formula isn't ready. I'm also interested in his Maze-style bee feeder, it's also not being offered "yet". He's on my radar, but is focused on his human market at the moment :)

I wonder how much crossover there is with some oh Phil Chandler's work with his trials of what he is calling the "eco-floor" for hives, which attempts to simulate the natural environment inside a natural hollow tree, with various moulds, fungi, and all the natural life forms which coexist with bees in their natural habitat.
I'm not sure what hive/cavity interiors are presenting with material on the bottom interior? All of the cavities I've observed including in trees have had extremely clean interior bottom areas.. The only cavities with litter on the hive floor had been abandoned or infested by waxworms etc. So I'm not familiar with intentionally putting litter on the floor and considering that "natural"? It's the opposite of what the bees do. Interesting though, thanks for mentioning that. I'd need more research on that condition, but on the face of it I can't say it sounds like a beneficial environment?
@@FrederickDunn ah now Fred this is more than alittle misleading. The walls and rough areas inside a bee tree would be lined with propulis. The floor of a tree hollow might be "clean" but nowhere near box hive clean and it would be full of life.

Sounds like you may be able to apply this with a flower sifter and gently sprinkle over frames and let the bees clean it off of each other.
That's what many are doing for sure. There is an entrance design coming out that has the bees walk through it upon entering the hive. Very promising. ProtectaBee. Just did an interview with them.
Fred, Could this be used in conjunction with Hive Alive?
Yes, they have different modes of action and Hive Alive isn't to be used when supers are on, while probiotics can be used any time of year.

I don't know that that has been confirmed. It would be nice if it did do that.

Fred, I keep bees in the suburbs, so agricultural challenges are not my problem, weed and feed is. Have you used probiotics for your bees? Is there a video of your results?

Hi Bill, I'd only be recycling what I've learned through published papers and of course from nutrition experts etc. I haven't used it on any of my hives "yet". They have them targeted toward specific neonic, or other pesticide exposure challenges. Unless your bees are under some Agricultural pesticide pressure you may not see dramatic improvements. Something to keep and eye on, but I don't have direct experience to share.
Fred, I am in Big AG country NW Minnesota. I lost many colonies to some kind of poisoning event late summer/early fall last year. By fall more fell. Going into winter with a 3rd of the colonies that I normally keep (20). Good activity at the entrance at the end of January on a warmish day. So, we survived past the deep freeze months, but Feb turned out to be really cold too. Now, well into March with little to no flight days, I'm worried about what remains. By weeks end, we are forecasted for near 40° F temps, so maybe a quick peek under the lid will be possible. Thanks for the feedback on the SuperDFM and honesty. I've not found anyone yet that has used it to get some feed back from. I'm leery about feedback from manufactures of any product. From what I've read and heard, I'm going to give the product a try. @@GrandpaBees Hi again, Bill! I do have two hives that are smack dab in a heavy pesticide use area... scoring really bad via BeeScape.org so I think I have a test group in those two hives. It's my son's yard, and his neighbor is also keeping bees. They both lost their colonies over winter. So, we'll be using super DFM there and see how that goes. I'll be incorporating the Best for Bees entrances as my delivery method.
@@FrederickDunn Randy Oliver suggest that he hasn't seen any benefits with either SuperDFM or ProDFM in his testing. At this point, I can't see any harm in trying it. If I don't see good results, I may have to shutdown my beekeeping here. Thanks for replying and your videos. Specially enjoy the ones you take of the bees out foraging on the different flowers in your bee pasture. I don't think I recognize the "Best of Bees" entrances. I look it up. -Bill
Bee research is very interesting, but guest speaker may need to bee reminded of time limitations.

This company needs someone who has cruel neutrality to test their products….thinking of you Frederick. Or they could randomly and blindly supply their “citizen scientists” with both active and inactive product with the promise of replacement costs for any losses. Either way there’s going to be a great deal of math involved.
Carefully designed DOE (Taguchi) and regression analysis might be the way to go… horrible array at first… so many variables but need meaningful measurable.

I'm not sure that weed and feed would be one of the chemicals that Super DFM is currently formulated for. I'd hold off if that's what you have concerns with.
