- This groundbreaking interview we discuss the remarkable finding that red light significantly lowers blood glucose level in humans by stimulating mitochondrial function, and the implications this has for individual and global health.
Glen Jeffrey, PhD is a Professor of Neuroscience at University College, London researching the effects of light on biology and mitochondria in animal models and humans.
He is a close collaborator with previous podcast guest and Optics engineer Scott Zimmerman and astronomer & astrophysicist Bob Fosbury, all of whom are raising awareness of infrared light deficiency & blue light excess of modern indoor environments.

And now blue headlights!!!
No wonder I feel anxious and upset when I drive at night these days.
Get blue light blocking glasses
For the past two months, I've been using a red light therapy device from Future Form Official for 20 minutes daily, targeting my face, neck, and upper chest. At first, I aimed to improve my skin tone, and the results have been amazing. My skin is now more radiant and youthful-looking. Despite my age, I've always been complimented on my skin, and this therapy has enhanced it even further. The experience is incredibly soothing, and I wholeheartedly recommend red light therapy for skin improvement.
Infrared light or just led light?
I am 72 and spent a good part of my life outdoors. I always did my best to stay away from toxins and ate organically. Although I have wrinkles my skin looks great. I never wore face make up or sunscreen. I take grounding breaks with daylight. If you want to feel good as you get older it is important to do whatever is possible to be healthy.!!
@@yevgendzygar1741 Its both in one panel, red light and near infrared light. :)
@@yevgendzygar1741 Its red light + near infrared light ;)
Is this via red LED’s?
My story in context. Got rid of myopia. Morning light, fireplace in house, sauna, ice baths in winter, live in Finland, 5 year keto followed next 4 on deuterium low carnivore and walk a lot in work. Quit office work and got new spouce and friends. Sickness stared at 30 till 47. Me, a 57y caucasian male.
Congratulations on making health a priority. Sometimes I feel like the only person who gets it within my circles. My friends and family just do not seem to care about changing their habits in order to heal their poor health. I prefer to learn and grow rather than stagnate and settle for aging poorly.

I'm finally starting to feel hopeful for humankind. Even though this research is in infancy it brings me so much relief to be on the right path. Thank you for being one of the torch bearers.
Wow, hopeful is a big deal!
Listening to this while laying out in the sun drinking my morning coffee. Feeling healthy and strong. ☀️
Amazing straightforward conversation on the influence of light on metabolism. Great for sharing!
9 months of Red Light panel here. Much less belly fat - almost all gone. Got my hourglass figure back. I'm perimenopausal too.
What type of a panel do you have. I really want one but not sure what to buy. Thanks in advance
Did you change anything else? I went Carnivore 3 yrs ago and got the same result as you (I’m 58) but I’ve still got some issues that I want to improve 100% I have been listening to a lot of info on quantum biology
How often did you lay or allow the panels on your skin per week?
May I ask what kind of Red Light panel you purchased and where?
Interesting
How often did you do red light, how long, what the panel name
Thank you!
Absolutely amazing conversation, this is so ground breaking! Thanks Max for an awesome interview!
Thank you for finally addressing this issue. Our children are being harmed by all this blue light.
Good one, man. I admire the super narrowly focused researchers and they’re essential. However, they’re limited because of the various aspects they know little about thus, they cannot put the pieces together and fully grasp the whole story. I think that’s one thing that makes Dr. Kruse stand out so much. He’s the best I’ve seen in terms of understanding widest array of facets within health.
Yes but he needs to gather those with more specific real life experience and ideas and influence - who are not so obnoxious and full of themselves- I can stomach Jack but many cannot so it goes unheard
@@lmyers9999 I understand where you’re coming from. I don’t really listen to Jack for his personality or to be comforted by his words. No one else should either. Do we really care what Einstein or the like are in terms of these things? Not much I’d say. That’s why the most famous influencers are so fake. They’re like politicians saying what keeps them in many peoples good graces because they’re selling something and/or manipulating them. We gotta be able to stop prioritizing our feelings over absorbing valuable information.
Fantastic discussion! Thank you so much. I have printed the Zimmerman paper so I can read through again.
Absolutely lovely interview! Thank you much!
Wow! SO interesting! I'm off to garden outside now...😊
Dr.Jefferey makes the nice presentation.
Very interesting, thank you! Several years ago I had a professional interest in mitochondrial dysfunction in neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, etc. This interest started much earlier when i was only 16 after learning about classic mitochondrial disorders such as MELAS, Kearns-Sayre, Leigh syndrome, etc., and the wide range of debilitating effects. There's so much to explore. As a newer subscriber I wonder if you've discussed the research and findings of Dr Gabor Somlyai given the mitochondria connection to depleted deuterium water.
Yes interviews Dr Somlyai - the deuterium piece is very important in mitochondrial optimisation. Dr Doug Wallace is the pope of mitochondrial diseases, I hope to discuss these topics with him soon.
Listen to Jack Kruse - Jeffrey won’t mention him as his name is toxic politically
Recently retired physician here. Very interesting.
Really appreciate this guest being on your pod. Would love to hear more about how using red light can improve eye health. Cheers!
Conserve energy by eating less , exercising, sleep well, there’s led lights of these beneficial spectrums , more efficient focused light, less waste, it’s a win win!
Thanks Dr. Glen love your simplicity to explain about red light. Less is more
Wonderful video! Thank you!
Working in my diabetic office makes me sad. I didn't throw away the incandescent bulbs yet. I knew they were handy. They were for the turtle and chicken homes. Now they are back in my eye. Thanks. Red light definitely works. If you have sore feet, or dry feet. They make them feel better or sweat more. I confirm that with one 20 min session, generic amazon pad. Sun makes you stink/hormone smell more. You sweat more, very easy to compare. Then sitting under a tree is just blowing my mind. WHUT did you say. Thanks guys. Love you, almost more than Dr Lustig and his campaign to better health. He's working to get the junk out of the diet. You guys are getting the junk out of my eyes. The concept this past year is to do things metabolically broken ones don't. I was there with them 2 years ago. Never again. I didn't think the walk in the park was more about the light than the movement.
Wow that was such an interesting discussion. I have been very sceptical of the effects of blue light, in particular with regard to its effect on the retina ( I'm in the optical business) but I'm going to have to have a big rethink after hearing all that.
Interesting info when you consider the way hospitals operate in blue light with blue light tech, and patients are not taken outside into sunlight, nor supplemented with any red light, or full spectrum light. What affect is this having on medical staff & their ability to make correct diagnoses and decisions.
Awesome chat ..many thanks
So, get your long wave length light in the early morning. Not that there is anything wrong with seeing the sun set...
This video is very very interesting. One of the best videos you've made.
Incredible! Thank you for sharing this research. Simply amazing.
Photobiomodulation was the catalyst to allowed me to stabilize my blood sugars!
Lifting weights allowed for increased Mitochondria.
90 day blood sugar around 100! Several years ago, after weights, blood sugar spikes over 400.
Thank you for such an informative and interesting podcast. I've learned something new today and will be implementing your advice😊
Walking outdoors in a natural environment enhances our immune response.
When my friend who has type 2 diabetes spent the weekend with he, even though she ate her same diet,,her blood glucose went down because she was relaxed, not stressed out . We bengedcwatch, “Downton Abbey” late into the night. So our eureka moment was the lowers 10:35 stress levels lowered her blood sugar
It makes sense that red light therapy would do the same thing because it also relaxes you, just like sitting in front of a fire or laying on the beach all day, you get relaxed and even tired,
Given the effect of metformin on the electron transport chain, I was just wondering if there was any difference in the effect of red light between diabetic subjects who were vs who were not taking metformin?
Please attach the study so we can send to our Department of health
It's given in the description and is open access.

The department of health is a perfect example of an oxymoron as they are definitely not interested in your health...they want you ill and sick....

Dr Glen Jeffery is a great man, not only a great scientist.
Mandating energy saving light bulbs not only save energy by providing light it also helps to reduce the population. Government policy.
Looking at passive homes. They do have some thought on heating the house with sun and making the non-sun sides more thermal blocking. Or reflective. i'm not a window guy. I love it when the answer is, i'm not sure. But here's the premise. Find a compromise.
I watch the rabbits sit in the grass at dawn and at dusk, when I go out to get some red light. I now have a completely new perspective on this phenomenon. I think they must instinctively know the light during these times is critical for their health and survival.
Just my theory. 😁👍🏻
Can red light therapy be used to resolve macula adima if so, what is the protocol?
And how long does it take for resolution
Well, so much better than listening to Dr Jack Kruse. None of the 'what did I tell you in the talk with fred bloggs 12 years ago' 'why did I not tell you this 5 years ago, because you weren't ready' 'nobody listened to me and now I can tell you the proof I was holding back on' 'I told the idiots they were on the wrong track'
This is on point thanks
Hi, fantastic topic. You were discussing how the mitochondria do it. You said water and oxygen. Well the body makes a lot of H2O2. Could they both be playing a role by being hydrogen peroxide. ???
Fantastic video congratulations. 👍
Could you put me onto a machine I could buy. 😊
Sorry to point out that ISS has never left a large and deep pool in Houston and astro-nots neither.
It is incorrect to describe all LED lighting as devoid of red light. I was so for the first LED lighting but today any combination of frequencies can be achieved. It is more about the decision not to go the cheapest lighting solution. I use LED grow lights to which blue and red LEDs have been added to provided specific frequencies required for growth and blooms.
Great video it gives me hope❤❤❤❤❤
What is the go-to 670 nm product those of us at home can purchase if we aren't lucky enough to be in a study?
I have a red light device that I LOVE but it has 630 and 680nm but not 670nm.
Earthing also brings the blood sugars down.
Sound advice from a very trustworthy source.Thank you, Dr. Jeffery and Max.
Both the gentlemen are 🎉
Wow, dopamine and mitochondria interactions? Gotta look into that. 😮
The assertion that mitochondria can metabolise only glucose is incorrect; they can also metabolise fatty acids and ketones. Certain cell types, most notably red blood cells, lack mitocjomdria and it is for this reason that we need a certain blood plasma glucose concentration. But humans have no need whatsoever for *dietary* carbohydrate as the source of blood glucose because the liver (and I believe also the kidneys and intestines) can produce glucose from amino acids and/or fatty acids.
Good point. Other reasons could be that the porphyrin holding onto the nitric caged iron makes blood ferroelectric and thus it becomes magnetised by quantised energy in 670nm+ and is able to sustain a weak potential difference to provide a sorce for direct current moving blood. It is a beautiful complex system.
Any protein attached to glucose in excess will weaken this field dampening bloods magnetic signals.
Add False Doping phenomenon and it will weaken the plasma flow in capillaries. The heart does not have the strenght to do the work on itself but the plasma can. Embryo studies can confirm this.
As JKr points out, We truly seem to be or indeed are quantum electric biosystems.
My view originates from my work on optoelectric materials research. What fun it is to see all this coming together from all sides opposing greed and hubris of mankind. Yet once again humanity is gaining momentum.
Have a bright day.
But ketosis is dangerous in the long run, apart from the cancer risk from the meat.

Do different fabrics absorb light differently, so are there optimum fabrics for light absorption? Maybe natural versus synthetic fabric affects blue/red light absorption. Also, Jews aren't to wear mixed fibres. Could this influence light absorption in the skin?

LED light is the sugar of lighting.
You can buy infra red heating panels that are cheap to use for winter warmth ...but there are lots of wall mounted sizes
and styles ....i never thought it had effects on blood sugar .... good to know that ....the suns UV light can damage older skin

Greetings, Appreciate your content.
? Morning sunrise raises my glucose, lower at initial wake. This is normal I understand correct?
My morning glucose rose before I got into the benefits of sunlight. I presumed the liver produced the glucose as I was fasted from not eating since early evening the night before. The liver will produce glucose if your body/brain needs it.
High glucose level after waking is normal, as I understand it.

Fascinating. Personally I have had COVID twice and both times I sat in the sun as that seems to work when I have had a cold. And both times I only had a mild illness. Not bad for a 66 year old. As a general question when is the best time to get the red light in the morning? Day break when the sky is the pinkist or actual sunrise or anytime early in the morning ?
I’ll answer. It is recommended that we get our red light therapy within three hours of waking up in the morning. Ten minuites is mentioned, but three min. is adequate.

Thank you gents……. Fascinating and very actionable. i am wondering about this in connection with saunas. Some advocate for the traditional sauna citing the increased air temperature in the Finnish sauna. I suspect there is confirmation bias in that view. I am wondering how one could experiment to provide useful data on the matter. Sadly, I don’t see the incentive from centralised medicine to act on this or do useful further work
I have been taking a few milligrams of C60 dissolved in olive oil for several years now. Every year my vision improved in agreement with the experience of many others. What I was not prepared for was my color vision improvement. I was loosing partial color vision at night in my seventies, and I was not able to distinguish yellow traffic signs from white ones but after a few years on C60 my night color vision completely recovered. I believe that C60 improves the working of the mitochondria via strong antioxidant action.
By the way, I noticed that just about all the useful health related information on C60 disappeared from the Internet. Hm.
Thank you for the credible and detailed information which I will try to incorporate into my daily routine. Until now I thought this all was just a fad.
I wonder about taking exogenous anti-oxidants and if they will stop/slow down your body's own production of endogenous ones. I'd rather find ways to support my body in making its own.

I have secondary Progressive MS, I just bought some incandescent (presumably a tungsten filament)red light bulbs. It may be, I suppose, not significant, but I’ve had this lamp on in my room for about two days and my movement, mental & bodily functions already seem better and I can see an apparent slight reduction of the redness speckles on my knees (maybe caused by my mitochondria). It’s too quick to say yet, but I was diagnosed over 13 years ago , so I feel it might be more than coincidental?

Does sleeping in late make you unhealthy, in that you miss the light with the most red which is in the am
What would the effect be on cancer cells, which feed on glucose. Would the infrared light kill or feed cancer cells?

I think it is not fair to place the blame on LED lights.
LED lights give off different wavelengths of light, including the red aspect of the spectrum.
It is inaccurate to say that LED lights only give off blue light.
Old fashioned lights consume much more energy, and can be a fire hazard because of the elevated heat they produce.
