I've only just found this. We learned this song in school. What a fantastic version. I'm going to replay it until I get the mandolin working with it. Stunning
Your channel is absolutely superb! It’s fantastic to see our songs from the old world being preserved in the new. Well sung, fantastic atmosphere and hair-standing-on-end crowd participation. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to seeing more uploads!
Thank you for your wonderful compliment! Sorry for the delay, we have been unable to gather since March due to the pandemic and so I have been less attentive to the channel. I hope you have found other songs which to sing along in our collection. We hope to resume singing together by early summer but no one knows when.
That would be delightful. We'll be happy enough just to be able to gather back in our own bar when the plague subsides. A few of our members travel to England and Ireland periodically and attend pub sings there.
@@Saltydogshanty Of course what I said was a bit extreme but you certainly get an atmosphere going in the pubs. A song is what the pub game is missing these days!
Thank you for listening. We miss this so much it makes us cry too, thinking about it. One day perhaps we will be able to join together in song again. Please enjoy perusing our channel and finding many more great gems like this one.
Have you folks considered releasing an album? I have listened to a number of the songs on this channel and I bet a lot of people across the pond (UK) who listen to this style of music would buy the album. Once again this is a fantastic rendition of the classic shanty.
Thank you for the splendid compliment! And thanks to the many fine sailors and singers across the pond who created many of the songs we sing, in the first place. I doubt we would ever produce an album, as there is not even any specific membership for those who attend the pub sings and we prefer to sing without rehearsal or polishing. This channel is about the only repository of our evenings, but feel free to forward links and listen and sing along! Three of our members travel to England somewhat-annually and participate in English pub sings. Our shanty-man Bob Walser publishes his own CDs at bobwalser.com.
Just some folk in a pub ... a choir from heaven.
Thank you for listening! Every pub becomes a slice of heaven when filled with people singing.
I looked up Mingulay. This island in the Outer Hebrides was abandoned over a hundred years ago--which shows you how old this song is.
This song was written about 25 years after the people abandoned the island, to commemorate them. The people of Mingulay did not sing this themselves.

This, beer and meat forever. a happy life would be had
This video is criminally underrated
Thank you for listening. Colin is one of our group's favorite singers. I hope you enjoy singing along to more songs on our channel.

the only shanty I knew until recently was Bonnie light horseman by Planxty. I heard this sung at a wedding and love the melody
This is the version I've been looking for so long !!! This is the spirit of this tune. Thank you !!!
Fantastic, you should tour every pub in Britain and Ireland when the lockdown is over!
