A Wellerman refers to supply ships owned by the Weller Brothers who owned a whaling station in Otago, New Zealand, among the most profitable blokes in NZ at the time. :D
Respect to everyone who played a part- the people in costume, the sign language intepereters, dancers, and of course the editor(s) who had to put all that together. It's easy to close your eyes and imagine a whole fleet of ships singing this song together while sailing away.
My mate Declan is in this somewhere and I've set myself a challenge to scour every frame of the song until I've found his face. So far I've been watching it a couple of times a day, every day for 2 weeks, and not found him yet. I won't give up. Edit 1: 2 months later (03/12/21): I have realised I will likely never find him unless he happens to be in the first 90 seconds of the song because past that, the clips of the various singers get too small to really distinguish. I'm still not giving up though, I will find him! Edit 2: As of 12/05/22 I remain unable to locate him. I require a much larger screen to continue my attempts to locate him, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
i have a feeling that this grass root resurgence of sea shanties is part of a bigger theme. I feel like the passion for exploration is being fueled again. We have Elon Musk trying to colonize mars and Bezos trying to build commercial space travel. Another theme that can emerge from this is the urge to engage in sea ferrying employment. This would certainly help economies and lower unemployment in a crucial field that goes over looked. We could even see ocean living on a boat become a thing due to rising costs of living in a home! just some thoughts, the come back of sea shanties is fascinating!
Love that so many people from so many backgrounds joined forces to do this. From VR to sign language that's the power of the community, and it's even stronger during hard times
I just want to thank The Longest Johns and their community for getting me slowly out of my digital shell. I have always been shy, when it comes to the internet. As far as I know, this is the first public comment on a youtube video. I even participated in this community project and started watching twitch, because of this lovely community. I try one step at a time to get out of my digital shell and take part in activities. I have slowly made myself comfortable with talking in the chat at livestreams and premieres and even on twitch. If I keep going at this pace, I might introduce myself in the discord server any day now. I wish every member of this community the best of luck and I am excited to see this video premiere, maybe a bit nervous, but excited nonetheless. I will be here when the premiere starts and will assist you guys in reaching the next community project, just like the other fantastics songs, I am sure you will bring out.
Look at everyone who didn't care about their differences and came together to make this epic masterpiece. We can achieve so much if we just put down our swords.
I was at a football (soccer game) and some lady was singing the national anthem when the mic cut out. The crowd picked it up, and the sound of like 80,000 people singing "Star spangled banner" was immense. The power of the human voice in large numbers is humbling.
There's just something about 6500 people all grunting together in perfect harmony and sync that makes a person remember their ancient beginnings. This is so fun and impressive! I can't wait for the next big project from you all.
This is INSANE! Like... from the perspective of a fellow musical artist... Do you KNOW what it means to MIX AND MASTER 6500 VOCAL TAKES?! That's not even taking into account the practice and coordination pre-production. And the video editing... FAM! These are kinds of things that give me hope for the internet ♥️
There were so many fun people to watch! There were atleast three people in pirate cosplays, two people were signing the song, one person was dancing in a full costume, one was actually on a boat, and then there's this one guy with a really deep voice you can hear throughout
that 1 person is the shantman, the sailor who starts and is accompanied by the crew singing the chorus and responding with grunts or short words like hey!

This is not supposed emotional, yet, with how beautifully this is done I cry EVERY time I listen to it. Well done to everyone who took part in this, well done to the editor for putting this together, well done all around. I literally am in tears every time I listen to it.

"AND THE WHALE'S NOT GONE!" Ayeee that's me and my friend as the two pirates right smack bam in the middle there! This turned out sooo good you guys - massive thanks to TLJ and the editors!! So proud to be a part of this!! ❤️❤️❤️
Sorry... You just spawned curiosity... So: Lets say 1 cup of tea per Person, 1 spoon of sugar per cup of tea and 1/2 bottle of Rum for each person. 1 teabag is about 1,75g (and yes, I weight it) 1 spoon full of sugar is 3,5g Lets add 350ml water, I mean what good is all this if you can't use it eh? Calculating with 6.000 people that would add up to: 10,5 kg teabags 21,0 kg sugar 2.100 L water 2.100 L Rum (assuming that 1 bottle of rum is the same 0,7 L it is today) So in total 4.231,5kg in total cargo weight. The sugar & tea is negligible 31,5kg isn't much. The 4.200L of fluid can be carried in about 26,4 barrels (1 barrel beeing 159L). Now: The Weller brothers had a ship, the Lucy Ann. In November of 1833 the Lucy Ann returned to Sydney Harbour with 130 tons of right wale oil... I coudn't find any density for right whale oil so lets just assume 130 tons (130.000kg) is the maximum cargoload of the Lucy Ann. Remember: 4.231,5 kg (4,2315 tons) can support 6.000 people with sugar, tea & rum. The Lucy Ann could support 91.682,5 people with sugar, tea & rum. To put that in perspective: The Isle of Man had a population of aprox. 77.000 people in the year 2000. It's just an assumption, not accounting for the actual space in the ship but it shows clearly that yes, the Wellerman could easily support the whole crew here with sugar, tea & rum. I don't know about you but I think that's beautiful.
Tell you what makes me happiest about this? This video perfectly represents an ideal vision of peace. It's just people having fun, doing something universal, singing. The thing that makes it for me is the fact that there's such a diversity going on that was highlighted a lot. You have dancers, animators, interpreters!!! There's people of all skins, from Melanated to Amelanist. People of all ages, from young children to the elderly. I saw Pride flags and trans flags, Lgbt+ people including heterosexual people. There were people with disabilities joining in, not held back. It's almost like a glimpse at world peace.

This just warmed my heart right here. This is what humanity should be.
If you knew what the song was actually about, I wonder if you'd still think that.... 🤣
I wish you the best of luck

The fact that this song has united so many people during a time of crisis is truly awe-inspiring. I love it. Nuff said.
i have a feeling that this grass root resurgence of sea shanties is part of a bigger theme.

Hello Avery

YOOO YOUR PIRATE OUTFITD ARE AWESOME
That moment when you find out you gotta bring sugar and tea and rum for 6,000 people...
The Wellerman'll be 'round 'fore long, mate.
That'd be a lot of sugar, tea and rum
Well, pirates did fill their ships with way too many people
Sorry... You just spawned curiosity...
So:
Lets say 1 cup of tea per Person, 1 spoon of sugar per cup of tea and 1/2 bottle of Rum for each person.
1 teabag is about 1,75g (and yes, I weight it)
1 spoon full of sugar is 3,5g
Lets add 350ml water, I mean what good is all this if you can't use it eh?
Calculating with 6.000 people that would add up to:
10,5 kg teabags
21,0 kg sugar
2.100 L water
2.100 L Rum (assuming that 1 bottle of rum is the same 0,7 L it is today)
So in total 4.231,5kg in total cargo weight.
The sugar & tea is negligible 31,5kg isn't much.
The 4.200L of fluid can be carried in about 26,4 barrels (1 barrel beeing 159L).
Now:
The Weller brothers had a ship, the Lucy Ann.
To put that in perspective:
The Isle of Man had a population of aprox. 77.000 people in the year 2000.
It's just an assumption, not accounting for the actual space in the ship but it shows clearly that yes, the Wellerman could easily support the whole crew here with sugar, tea & rum.
I don't know about you but I think that's beautiful.
That's a lot of ships...
this.. does bring a smile on my face.
