I speak for my father when I say "amazing". He was a Captain for the Canadian Coast Guard but also an old salt from a young age, always at sea, and would have appreciated this so much. Enjoy, Captain Stephen Costinak.
I’m retired US Navy (1999-2019) and I have a deep love for sea shanties. I absolutely love being at sea. I came across this song today at work and can’t stop listening to it. This is amazing. Makes me wanna head to some coastal town in Maine or Halifax (one of my favorite places ever) and drink at a bar on the waterfront and sing songs of the sea with Sailors. I love this. As we say in the US Navy when someone has done something exceptional, “BRAVO ZULU!”
This is quite literally my favourite version of any song that's ever been made. I can't even count the number of people I've shared this with, it's such an excellent rendition and produces the perfect mood. Well done!
The lead singer is great, but props to the tenor for the amazing high-pitch harmony. I like how in the "bully down in Shinbone al" verses his voice becomes stronger and stronger, to the point that when the lyrics reach the word "alley" it completely dominates the harmony -- shadowing even the lead singer. Like at 3:13, for example.
The question of ‘what it means to be British’ and ‘what is British identity’. This is an example of being British, our ancestors of the navy, something to be proud of and the shanties ooze British identity.
Micheal, excuse my clumsy way English, but I come from a Spanish-speaking country; Argentina; but I feel deep ties between our cultures and the men and women of work and sacrifice from around the world. I first heard this song in the "Artfull Dodger" series, I LOVE Dikens ( I love Victor Hugo too). Both place marginal, simple and vulnerable men and women at the center of the scene. (They were mediums who channeled deep knowledge and helped society evolve). I know and love many aspects of British culture and I learned about the sacrifice of children during the industrial revolution, railway development, mining, hunger and poverty of the proletarian classes as everywhere and from the bottom of this epic of Everyday life emerges this wonderful expression of friendship, improvement and hope; WOW!!! I shake your hand from the bottom of the American continent, one day we will all hug each other in eternity.
I'm born and bred Australian but feel a huge connection to my English heritage and this kind of thing makes me feel just that bit closer. I sing songs like this to my 3 year old son at bed time and he absolutely loves it. Thankyou good folk, sing on.....
Is it wild I cried? It's just got to be the pinnacle of manliness, comradery and sailors having a great time. It's astonishing I love it. By my moustache! Damn good show everyone!
HerdingDogRescuer heh, believe it or not, a voice cant take hours of this. it is pretty hard on the vocal chords. also tiring. low register baratone takes a lot of wind. my barbershop director (classically trained in opera but crossed over to barbershop) broke a rib coughing because his lungs / diaphram were incredibly strong.
You're way wrong in the case of John Bromley (the lead Shanty man here) Jason. I stand next to him gig after gig for nine years, and his voice never faulters, It is deep hulled and cast in iron. Check out any KIMBERS MEN stuff on youtube - you will see that to be true.
As a Scot you need to keep this sort of thing alive lads. it's beautiful to see folk try and keep local culture alive like that and it doesn't happen on it's own
I’m not a Scot but I am a U.S. Navy Sailor. Spent 20 years in the Navy and love this music of the sea and music of the people. It can only be preserved by our generation sharing it and passing it along to younger generations. I’ve been playing this stuff for my kids for a while now.
@@Bigtill1999 Thats cool man, glad you appreciate it. I worry that our neighbours south of the border struggle to keep things like this alive. Anyways, i'll be off to see Peat and Deisel in Glasgow next weekend for Celtic Conncetions. You can check it out online. Sea shanties were mentioned on board ships in the 1500’s. A lot of sea shanties tie in with British folk songs, this one was also found in Dorset,Somerset.(A lot of early English folk songs mention Sally(and trouble😅)in the alley, being in the backstreets outside pubs.)This group is from Yorkshire.

@@marazali1816 the chanty was a past time, but also something to break the monotony and increase teamwork between sailors. each song will have a main 'chorus' which is universal, but the verses and lines between the 'universal line' would be very different from ship to ship, and port to port. Some ships would even go further to change the tune.

Thanks, you shown a great understanding of the feelings of ordinary folk.
