    During the American Revolution, the British had set up a Naval blockade. They hired Privateers from the Canadian Maratimes to catch any American ships that evaded the blockade. They British stated that these privateers could keep all of the loot from captured American ships.
    Many Canadian privateers participated in the conflict, and some were quite successful becaming very wealthy. However most privateers looking for easy money had ships that were more suited for fishing, and less than ideal for naval warfare.

    Listening to this song puts hair on your chest. The second stage is your
    beard grows out magnificently. Next you start wearing manly plaid
    shirt, confidently open to the chest. Finally, you wear a handkerchief
    tied around you neck like a rustic Canadian sailor from the 1700's.

    Boy, time flies! In 2012, while working a thankless graveyard shift job as Maintenance at a Wal-mart, I heard one of those great eclectric folk shows on an FM station in my Sony Walkman as i scrubbed , mopped and cleaned the lavatories. And they played this some 10 minute long, live version of this man I never heard of...a rare radio version of Barrett's Priveteers. Now, as an old American folkie and guitar picker some 4 plus decades, i was fascinated by his passion, the resounding chorus of the GD's, and the total conviction and belief of what he was singing with his mates. i never forgot it...and BINGO, this 2nd day of 2018, without knowing the title...just the chorus of GD ! I found it here! Thanks for posting this...and kitchens are absolutely the BEST place in the house to play music, jam, and drink with your pals! Hundred of hours have i played in kitchens! Stan was gone far too early in life.

    • @donriley3349
      @donriley3349 6 лет назад +2

      p.s. Why does Stan come to mind out? i broke my hip early in December, and had hip replacement surgery; was in the hospital 12 days. In my room they had the great premium cable channel, The Smithsonian Channel...focusing that month of air disasters, and the NTSB investigations into what caused the crash. And by chance, i saw the hour documentary early in the wee hours when I sleep any more...about the Air Canada Flight, where Stan and others perished because of the lavatory fire on the runway, in Cincinnati. Wow...I hand't heard the name Stan Rogers since that night in 2013 while at work! I knew I would look him up and enjoy his music, when I got home. What an air tragedy...not even while in air! Rogers was taken from others far too soon..along with his fellow passengers who perished.

    Stan really, really studied Canadian maritime tradition, which makes his songs so incredibly accurate.
    Usually privateers didn't have to shoot their guns (or maybe at times a warning shot was enough). The type of boat the characters in the song were sailing on was a small vessel with 4" guns. Their boat is also in disrepair and the crew is inexperienced.
    They eventually get bold and go against a much larger American merchant vessel. They thought it didn't have guns, but it did. Much larger guns than they had. When they attacked, they were at "two rope" which is a distance that is beyond the range of their puny 4" guns. So they lose and the kid loses his legs.

    It was delightful to come across this one! In the culture we live in today, this form of gathering is sorely missed.
