As a Newfoundlander, this hits me hard in so many ways: the Cod Moritorium, my dad being a fisher affected by such, and also because my father was part of Folk of the Sea, a choir made up of fishers and the like that lost their livelihood. This was a song they would sing sometimes. Now I needs to get a tissue for my eyes

That terrible thing forever changed airline rules regarding circuit breakers being reset during flight. That's what happened... There was a fault in the wiring, the breaker for the lavatory tripped and they reset it during flight causing the smoke and fire. Now no circuit breaker is to be reset during flight.

He was very humble and he said he liked my photos. That meant so much to me then. One thing I don't hear mentioned much is his voice. What an amazing powerful voice!! Seeing him live was a wonderful privelage. We all knew we were seeing Greatness. I feel so lucky to have seen him four or Five times. Every time I hear Northwest passage I just choke right up.

  • @betsiamites1

"Make and Break" refers to the put-put-put "one lunger" boat engine that took away the work of rowing but didn't increase speed or power that much - thus the fishermen had to still go by the tides. After WW2, bigger engines came in, and boats could go further and get larger catches - but some places like "Make and Break Harbour" would still use the old engines. (cheaper, better for sustainability and environmental friendliness - but not for getting rich with - thus the double meaning for "Make and Break" in the song) Perhaps because of this extra layer of meaning (which I only realized after living in Atlantic Canada for 30 years - this engine is called names other than "make and break") = Stan's best song.

I’ve spent 12 years on the Great Lakes watching many vessels I once called home go to the scrappers torch. This song not only captures the melancholy feeling of those old hulls going away, but the fine memories of all the men who worked on them. Who were once fresh and new like the ships they loved.

A great song. There's an odd irony in the song and one other of his, "California." The one time I ever encountered any hostility from Californians toward Canada was working as a baiter/crew on a salmon troller. In California, you can't net salmon within state waters. They are hooked or illegal. I was on the wheel of a little converted troller when a nice looking Canadian trawler (note the difference in the word there is just one letter). The radio came alive with a whole swarm of angry salmon fisherman who were convinced the trawler would cruise along the edge of international water sweeping up whole schools. It was an attitude that surprised me, but those trollers were also looking at sad changes in what they could catch, how much, and when. The irony is that some of those snarling "Californian" trollers were immigrant Canadians.
