Every single voice on this song is 1 man… Brad Delp. He sing every harmony, doubled, and lead vocal. It is one of the great vocalists of all of rock music history.
Songs were more Complex back in the day. They Weren't just a simple melody, hook and chorus. Back then, musicians took song construction seriously and didn't Dumb Down for the Masses. Beautiful times.
The thing they will blow your mind... This was not made in a professional studio. The instrumental track was laid down by Tom Sholtz in his basement using a bunch of homebrew equipment, and then he got his buddy Brad Delp to lay down the vocals. Amazing.
Studio equipment of the time wasn’t good enough to do what Tom Scholz wanted so like any other Genius MIT trained Engineer would do… he made his own… the whole studio made from scratch… Later he called his musical instruments electronics company Scholz research and development… He originally wrote and recorded all the songs but Brad Delp came in and Scholz realized Delp was on a whole different level…
@@edharris6456said, "Studio equipment of the time wasn’t good enough to do what Tom Scholz wanted so like any other Genius MIT trained Engineer would do… he made his own… the whole studio made from scratch" There sure is a lot of Boston/Scholz urban legend BS out there. Tom used a Dan Flickinger mixer/console. Tom also used a Scully 12 track tape machine both of which he purchased. There is no way in hell that Toms home studio was better or capable of higher fidelity than or more capable than say Capital Studios Studio C where Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan. Tom also did not have the outboard gear and processing that is needed to record, produce and mix this kind of record. Three big name studios were involved in making this record what is is. Capital Studios Studio C, The Record Plant LA and Westlake Studios. Yes Tom recorded the majority of the instrument tracks for this record on his home studio, but Toms home studio certainly had serious limitations. Also Tom is not going to make better mic pre amps, eq's ect than Rupert Neve. Tom would have to be ego tripping his brains out in order to make that claim.
Whole debut album is considered one of the best albums of all time... you could do a complete series on Boston and have a blast. As others have said Brad Delp had one the best voices in rock but he left us too soon... rip brad
Live was a challenge. Tom played everything but drums on the album, and the vocals were Brad on top of Brad on top of Brad. It took some time to put together a band to play Tom’s vision! And he pretty much produced it all. In his basement. If he needed a sound, he invented it.
Not a knock on their live act, but this album was so well produced that I can't imagine it holding up to the recording itself. The sound Scholz got in his basement is still a standard, and we're coming up on 50 years. Just an incredible piece of art.
You just heard easily one of the best rock vocalist of all time. The isolated vocal track will blow your mind. Towards the end. Brad's ad libs are amazing. !!!
The entire album is fire. It was the group's debut album, and is considered one of the best debut albums ever released. The first song off the album that got significant air play (mid 1970s) was "More Than A Feeling." It was an absolute monster hit.
Great reaction and thanks for sharing. This album was recorded by three people in a basement before the record companies heard it. Tom Scholz, wrote, arranged, recorded, produced and engineered this album in his basement. Tom also played acoustic guitar, acoustic 12 string guitar, electric rhythm guitar, electric lead guitar, electric bass guitar and organ on this album. Tom's friend Brad Delp sang lead vocals, backup vocals, all chorus and all harmonies. Originally they had a friend play drums but before the album was released the record companies demanded a different drummer and Tom hired one. This album was recorded on used, borrowed, invented equipment some of which was designed and invented by Tom who is an MIT trained engineer. This album also debuted the first modern pedal (non wah wah) system for a guitar that was able to change the tone of the guitar without switching guitars. You can hear it in every song. Now every single guitar and bass player uses either Tom's system or a clone. This is the number one debut album of all time. This is disputed as the record companies have changed the metrics and do not account for money appreciation. So potato or patotoe. There is not a bad song on this album and I would recommend listening to the album the way we did. Start with 'More than a feeling' then work your way thru the album. This track was number three on side 1. Enjoy, Chris
@chrisbricky7331 There is so much Boston debut record urban legend BS out there. Including Tom there are 5 musicians playing instrumental tracks on this record. Barry and Brad had been playing in bands with and recording with Tom since 1969/1970. Tom used a Dan Flickinger mixer/console and a Sculley 12 track tape machine as the heart of his studio and both of those pieces of gear belonged to Tom. The Rockman nor any of its prototypes did not exist at the time this record was made. The electric guitar sound that you hear is from a Gibson Les Paul and when Barry is playing a Gibson SG fed into Marshall amp that is being driven so hard that the power tubes are clipping and compressing naturally. Tom then used a large variable resistor from a theater lighting system to "soak" up the wattage from the Marshall before the signal hit the speaker cabs and the DI set up he was using to feed the guitar signal directly into the console. "Now every single guitar and bass player uses either Tom's system or a clone" This is total BS. I am willing to bet that you are not an established studio guitar or bass player.
When I heard you say "This is going to be my first time hearing Boston"................I got goosebumps! So cool that you are hearing them for the first time in 2023! BTW, when you react to "More Than a Feeling", I think you will recognize parts of the song. Lot's of times when Boston sports teams are playing on national TV, the outro from the game to commercials will have "More Than A Feeling" playing in the background.
Their entire library is amazing. Probably the most technically perfect rock song ever written is 'Hitch A Ride' by Boston. You really need to give that one a listen
Brings back a fond memory of moving my speakers outside and blasting the new Boston album while blazing joints with my friends on a hot late August afternoon. This is a beloved album for me.
I'm 63 and grew up with Boston! There's tons that you can listen to and you won't be disappointed! Great, great reaction! Wonderful job on your channel!😊❤
One of my favs of ALL TIME!! I still think that Foreplay sounds very Bach-like in its triplets....so beautiful!! I have seen them live twice. They put on an INCREDIBLE show. I have been a fan since I was 10 years old. 56 now. One of my favorite show memories was seeing Tom Scholtz the guitar player, donning a phantom of the opera costume, playing his Gibson guitar with one hand and the huge pipe organ with the other. Super impressive.
Love your reaction, we were jamming to this album in high school in the 70s, nice to new reactors get in to some old 70s, styx, journey, reo, Nazareth, blue oyster cult, rush, and throw in some kiss,

Great rock bands are all about a group of amazing musicians. It is not just about a vocalist but the collaboration of musicians bringing individual sounds together in a way that makes you feel the music. I think it is unique to rock. It’s hard to dance to but easy to move to.
I absolutely love Boston, but the knock against them was always that they were a studio band only. Their leader, Tom Scholz, had a masters degree in engineering from MIT and they recorded in his house. He was a genius behind the board, but they never did as well live. Please enjoy their studio tracks. That's where Tom, Bradley Delp (lead vocals) and the others really shine.

This entire album is 🔥 Close your eyes travel back in time to the early to mid 70’s. There are no personal computers, no cell phones no internet no software programs just analog tape MIT engineering grad Tom Scholz who is a classically trained pianist brings in Sib on drums and Brad Delp on vocals into his basement studio, 12 track, and this album comes out of it. Brad all vocals Tom all instruments except drums. Bro the sound is timeless sounds as good today as it did in 1976 you couldn’t go anywhere without someone jamming this album. Sonically it sounded better than anything else out there a lot of the effects you hear were built by Scholz Anyway enjoy this whole album oh and the art is guitar space ships leaving an exploding earth
@haroldjones8023 All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C on their top of the line Quad Eight Console using a Neuman U 87 solid state mic, and Brads vocals turned out so much better than on the demo for this fact. There are two drummers on this record. Sib plays all drum tracks except one. Jim Masea plays drums on Rock and Roll Band. The entire song Let Me Take You Home was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA by the band as pictured on the back of the record. Tom most certainly does not play all of the instrument tracks on this record. Tom repeatedly obfuscates the truth about who did what on this record and he diminishes the contributions of others in the process. Barry plays the vast majority of the electric guitar parts on Foreplay and Long Time. Barry plays electric rhythm guitar on Foreplay, Long Time and Let me Take You Home. Barry also plays the huge power chords in Long Time as well as the amazing guitar solo on Long Time. Barry also plays lead and slide guitar on Let Me Take You Home. Fran plays bass on Foreplay and Let Me Take You Home and Brad plays acoustic 12 string guitar on Let Me Take You Home as well. This is all documented as fact in the post litigation liner notes in the 2006 Scholz remaster of the debut Boston record. In addition, Tom was forced to admit under oath that Barry does in fact play on three songs on this record and that they amazing guitar solo on Long Time is in fact Barry not Tom.
They couldn't do this live. Tom Sholz wrote this in his basement and made the music. He played all instruments except drums. He brought in Brad Delp to sing. Record companies didn't want to give him a label unless he used a studio for recording. He wanted to and did record his music in his studio he made in his basement. Great back story to this band
I have watched many "first reaction" videos of the music (Like Boston) that I grew-up with. Somehow, yours is the "first reaction" that I genuinely believe!
Best debut album all time ! (Facts) “1976” I might be biased….I’m from Boston and they are legends in these parts 🔥❤️🎸 this whole album was produced & Engineered in a basement by 1 man… and he played all the F*#king instruments himself 💪🏼 “Tom Schulz”
@MikeOstrowski-iq8wf Tom did not play all of the insturment tracks on this record. There is so much Boston urban legend BS. Tom has never admitted this on the record but producer John Boylan made Tom re-record all of the drum tracks and the acoustic instrument tracks because they were amatuirish and could not be used on the record. Boylan then hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to go to Toms studio to teach Tom how to record acoustic instruments correctly and proper mic technique. Tom then re recorded these tracks and the fact that Boylan did this improved the production of this record a great deal. None the less Boylan still had to do more production work on Toms drum tracks before they could be used for the final mix of this record. Boylan also recorded all of Brads vocals at Capital Studios Studio C on their top of the line Quad Eight console. Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded in its entirety at The Record Plant LA by producer John Boylan
This album was released while I was in basic training. The first time I heard it was about 2 months after it was released (we had zero privileges during basic in 1976). As soon as I heard it I was blown away and called my buddies back home to tell them about this new band. They laughed at me because it was already old for them from the radio. I ended up seeing them in Concert at Aloha stadium in Oahu where I was stationed a couple of months before I was discharged in 1979. To this day, whenever I hear them, I’m transported back to Ft. Rucker, AL in helicopter mechanic school where I first heard them.
I saw this band live in Amarillo, TX. They sounded as good live as they did on their recordings. They had a huge silkscreen backdrop of a pipe organ that would light up in unison when they played the organ. It was a great concert. I was privileged to have witnessed it.
PS, I saw them in concert in 93or 94 at desert sky pavilion and they were great! An awesome experience to remember. It sounded like you were there in the studio with them. And the show was even better!!
This guy doesn't even seem like he's familiar with real instruments the way he talks about how the song sounds because music in movies is usually orchestration; this is music that is usually made in normal rock bands back in the 60s and 70s like organs, grand pianos, synthesizers, bass, drums and guitars with effects from a guitar effects pedal called the "Hyperspace" pedal which there's only two in existence that the guitar player Tom Sholz from this band created and he created most of the music himself in his own home basement studio in 1976, he's a genius.
Have been subscribed to you for awhile I can't remember why maybe Elvis or something. But at any rate, it's so cool that you're doing this. That whole debut album is regarded one of the greatest in rock history. You could literally do every song on it but it really did have good album flow so it would be cool to do it in order, or maybe you are even doing that and I don't realize it. Based upon this though, you have absolutely got to hear them doing, from this same first album, Peace Of Mind. Just have a feeling you might really like it.
You've got a good voice yourself ! Saw "Sam & Dave" on your list. Grew up on Old Motown/Soul, yep I'm old..lol. Just created a playlist from all of my old favorites ! ✌👍
Boston had so many great songs and Brad Delp (RIP) was one of the amazing vocalists in rock history. A couple of songs where you can really hear his vocals shine are "More Than a Feeling" and "A Man I'll Never Be". I promise you won't regret reacting to either of those two.
This was one of my favorite bands back in High School! This was their 1st album, which they recorded in their "Basement" lol! It was way ahead of the times! You won't find a bad song on the entire album! Matter of fact, it's difficult to name which song is my favorite on the album! B̤o̤s̤ton-B̤o̤s̤ton [SACD R Remastered] 1976 Full Album HQ 1. More Than a Feeling 2. Peace of Mind 3. Foreplay/Long Time 4. Rock & Roll Band 5. Smokin' 6. Hitch a Ride 7. Something About You 8. Let Me Take You Home Tonight

Really, one of the most dramatic "intros" to a song, ever. This band is pure fire. Studio versions are great, for the purity of the music. Live versions are for the pleasure of seeing the artists perform. Thanks for your reaction.
When I was a kid, like 7 or 8 my cousin and I would going her brother's room, cause it was cool, black curtains, turntable, and he was a teenager. We would blast boston, more than a feeling on his tennis rackets. We were awesome, by the way.❤ much love to you sugar.

MIT engineering grad Tom Scholz who is a classically trained pianist brings in Sib on drums and Brad Delp on vocals into his basement studio, 12 track, and this album comes out of it. Brad all vocals Tom all instruments except drums. Bro the sound is timeless sounds as good today as it did in 1976 you couldn’t go anywhere without someone jamming this album. Sonically it sounded better than anything else out there a lot of the effects you hear were built by Scholz
Anyway enjoy this whole album oh and the art is guitar space ships leaving an exploding earth
As soon as I saw you were doing this one I knew I had to watch. I think you'll dig it.
Boston is top tier
Saw them live in 2014. All the songs sounded exactly like the studio versions. Doobie Brothers were the opener. Simply incredible concert.
Glad to see you are analyzing the versatile voice of BRAD DELP. He tackled the most challanging vocal phrasing in rock.
You HAVE to listen to more off of this album. The first Boston album is 11/10.
Give this live one a listen He could hit them notes Boston - "More Than A Feeling" - 12-7-88 - Hamilton, ON
I have watched many "first reaction" videos of the music (Like Boston) that I grew-up with. Somehow, yours is the "first reaction" that I genuinely believe!
Best debut album all time ! (Facts) “1976” I might be biased….I’m from Boston and they are legends in these parts 🔥❤️🎸 this whole album was produced & Engineered in a basement by 1 man… and he played all the F*#king instruments himself 💪🏼
“Tom Schulz”
Also, Triumph Lay It On The Line (Triumph Allied Forces channel). Rik can hit some NOTES!!
Tom SHOLTZ ,/BRAD DELPH ( Behind The Boston MASK!)🤨
Brad Delp caught lightning in a bottle. There was nothing like it when it came out, nothing like it now, simply outstanding.
boss, saw them live and they sound exactly like what you are listening to. great band!!! great review!!!
Music then, had depth and dynamic range, with many changes and variations within a song. Super creative, and awesome, composition-wise!
Great reaction!! Loved it. Please do more Boston🙏🏻🙏🏻The whole album is amazing!!!
Shiny objects
This guy doesn't even seem like he's familiar with real instruments the way he talks about how the song sounds because music in movies is usually orchestration; this is music that is usually made in normal rock bands back in the 60s and 70s like organs, grand pianos, synthesizers, bass, drums and guitars with effects from a guitar effects pedal called the "Hyperspace" pedal which there's only two in existence that the guitar player Tom Sholz from this band created and he created most of the music himself in his own home basement studio in 1976, he's a genius.
Love Boston 🤘🔥
Have been subscribed to you for awhile I can't remember why maybe Elvis or something. But at any rate, it's so cool that you're doing this. That whole debut album is regarded one of the greatest in rock history. You could literally do every song on it but it really did have good album flow so it would be cool to do it in order, or maybe you are even doing that and I don't realize it.
Based upon this though, you have absolutely got to hear them doing, from this same first album, Peace Of Mind. Just have a feeling you might really like it.
“Like, if Stephen king made music, it would’ve been this” 😎😂👏💕
Saw em live back in the day on their 2nd tour! great memories
I saw them live as a Junior in high school and they sounded incredibly just like the studio albums. Seriously great concert.
I’m only a few seconds into watching this but your expressions are great! Can definitely see your true feelings
The bands from the 80's & 90's were rockin'. Soooooo many hits, so many wonderful memories.
I don’t know if you realize this or not, but that’s a guitar that looks like a spaceship on the album
Nice falsetto bruh to a song & talent that can’t be duplicated. Cept don’t be so shy. Let er’ rip! :)
Boston was renowned for sounding, LIVE, nearly exactly like the record. 👍🏽😁
This was one of my favorite bands back in High School! This was their 1st album, which they recorded in their "Basement" lol! It was way ahead of the times! You won't find a bad song on the entire album! Matter of fact, it's difficult to name which song is my favorite on the album!

So cool, I can see the focus in your face as you dissect the instrument layers.
Love Boston!!❤❤ Many of these groups had long instrumental intros and outros, especially in the seventies, maybe going into the 80’s.❤

Man you got a great voice yourself brother. Hitting all those notes
Hey, I love your review of this song. You are one example of what people can enjoy from one another. Very cool to see you say, come on give it to me when you heard a part that you liked. Blessings to you.
I saw them live in 1987 at the Philadelphia Spectrum - I was 18. Their first album (from 1976) rocks. It's just some good ol' classic rock n roll.
Live @ Civic Center Hartford, CT 1987
Really, one of the most dramatic "intros" to a song, ever. This band is pure fire. Studio versions are great, for the purity of the music. Live versions are for the pleasure of seeing the artists perform. Thanks for your reaction.
When I was a kid, like 7 or 8 my cousin and I would going her brother's room, cause it was cool, black curtains, turntable, and he was a teenager. We would blast boston, more than a feeling on his tennis rackets. We were awesome, by the way.❤ much love to you sugar.
