It's pretty deep. He's just so good at putting what everyone feels, into words.
What I take from this song is the struggle with antidepressants and anti psycotics. As a person who has lived with a partner for 25 years who struggles with depression daily. Taking these pills basically erases her personality and makes her numb, essentially a "chalk outline" of her actual self. Years of her sitting in my lap and crying because she is so tired of feeling this way makes this song so impactful for me.
Yes, it's very hard. I was stuck on SSRI's that didn't even help me, for 10 years because the withdrawals were so severe, I couldn't get off. I finally bit the bullet and weaned myself off in 2013.

How to be me is even harder, yeah. I love how Ren lets her take over at the end, all of his videos with other artists show his enormous respect for the other person in the song.
This song also got me the first time I watched it. The emotion they invoke. The pictures that the words paint are so relatable it's scary.
This is my favorite song from Ren. The emotion that can be felt through the lyrics. And, like many others, I connect with it on a personal level.

Great reaction! A lot of us tear up and/or get the chills every time we listen to any of Ren's masterpieces, but his collabs with Chinchilla are just phenomenal. As some other mentioned, you should definitely to a reaction to their collab, "How to Be Me (live)", and then also check out some of Chinchilla's solo live videos including, "Fingers" and "Cold Water (there are a couple of live videos of this one)".

Her latest release, Little Girl Gone, is also worthy of a reaction. In that case I would choose the lyrics video - the music video, even though very good, distracts a little from the lyrics in my opinion. The lyrics video on the other hand enhance them.

I’ve been going down the Ren reactions rabbit hole, and I absolutely loved your reaction. This song had me bawling thinking about my sister who committed suicide. I sent it to my whole family just so they could feel this song. And that is the best part about Ren’s music I think…every single song makes you feel something. ❤

As I am suffering myself from double depression, depersonalization, anxiety disorder and a chronical pain disorder (especially headaches) for decades by now I feel so connected to Ren and the masterpieces of art he created and gave us. His ability of telling stories about the most personal and difficult topics is incredible

The thing I love most about Ren, as I hop from channel to channel watching everyone reacting to him, is how universal his music is. I I know this feeling well I feel I've been walking round in a chalk outline for many years
i think im a pharma dream patient I have to take seven different types of medication to get me through the day and the doctors are going to be adding at least another two types of tablets to the list so I will be around 50 tablets per day but I don't feel any difference but the doctors say they are working
So the line where Ren says I hope I'm someone else in the morning I've had that feeling since I was a teenager and now even in my fifties I'm still wishing I was someone else
That's heart breaking! I think you should tell the doctors to shove it, and that YOU know how you feel better than they do! If those medications aren't working, don't let them bully you! If you can, find a functional medicine doctor who will actually work with you as an individual and not just another paycheck. I wish you health and healing! Blessings to you! 🙏

May I just say a huge thank you to you as your reactions are my medication at the moment as I am going through the second hardest time of my life, the first being my ex wife drink driving and killing our four year old daughter (my ex survived without a scratch), I wasn’t in the car but it affected me to the point of jumping off a high building but landing on my feet, it has resulted in just having my lower left leg amputated. As I’m currently bed bound I’m finding your reactions are helping me get through the day, I love your honesty and rawness. As a guitar player I love the nuance in his playing. The first 3 chords ended with an E major and its the lowest of the chords; he also played it the lightest to highlight the depth of it. C#m was loudest being the "brightest." It's the little things.
If I knew anything about chords and such, I bet I could articulate how the music affects me so much better... but alas... my two years of playing clarinet in 8th and 9th grade band class didn't stick. 😫

Dopesick is excellent. It's not being renewed so we're just left with wondering what Doc is going to do. That show made me cry several times. I am a functional addict I guess. I got on Tramadol because of Degenerative Disc Disease, sciatica, arthritis, and right knee issues. I work and am functional when I have my meds to help my daily pain. It's such a vicious circle to be in.

Yes, there's a lot to be said for chronic pain. I have arthritis- like pain every now and then, but I don't know if it's my diet, or just age. I assumed Dopesick was only the one season... so I looked into if there might be a season 2 and couldn't find anything definitive. But as it is now, there's no talk of season 2. It was really great. I watched another reaction to this where someone who is a skilled musician pointed out that Chincilla's vocals are like a half beat off from Ren's and the rest of the time signature. It creates this sense that something is "off" but also causes the vocals to feel like to distinct "ends" surround the guitar.

This is one of those songs where it can really have 2 meanings, because for some, he is talking about self-medicating and addiction, where engaging in the drugs or habits turn them into a shell, a walking chalk outlines. There, but not really there.
For others, myself included, knowing his medical history and lines like 'Sertraline (Zoloft) and a sip of serotonin, don't cry cause there's a pill for everything' is more about doctors and insurance companies preferring to just throw psychiatric medications at people struggling and seeing what works. Because hey, if the first doesn't help, don't worry, we have more pills to experiment on you with (which is how I took the line about 'push it back down with a new habit' aka another medication to try or a medication to combat the side effects of the first medication). He goes further into this idea in Sick Boy.
One very common side effect of anti-depressants and other psychiatric medications is a feeling of numbness of ALL emotions, good and bad, creating an almost derealization effect like walking around as just a shell, a chalk outline of a human. This is often a reason why creative people who do legitimately need these medications for things like Bipolar Disroder struggle to stay on the medication, because they feels it numbs their creativity (sometimes stemming from being in a manic state). On paper, they're 'okay' with medication management, but 'all things change' including potentially those highs that they feel allow them to create, so they can be resistant to treatment and scared of being 'okay' since they relied on those episodes to channel their creative energy. (Yes, I know Ren was misdiagnosed and isn't Bipolar, but the sentiment echoed in this line often comes up with these patients).
At some point, while under a doctor's medication, they finally feel okay and the day is perfect, but they still are physically reliant on the medications prescribed (antidepressants, anti-anxiety meds, etc.) that they need to continue to take it 'just in case' (since likely going off of them even for a short while will come with a return of the symptoms being treated or withdrawal effects).
It is interesting you bring up Dopesick, which I haven't seen yet, but from my understanding has more to do with the opioid problem of just throwing heavy duty pain meds at everyone and being shocked they end up addicted. What we don't talk about often as a society is that psychiatric medications are often used in a similar way, prescribed for so, so many different issues off label, because it seems like an easy bandaid instead of treating the root issue. Even in psychology, they're given to people suffering from acute, situational depression (aka not from a chemical imbalance), because insurance companies decided it was cheaper to medicate and see a prescriber every 1-3 months than pay for weekly therapy treatment to treat the real problems.
Before the mental health parity was signed into law, ironically added into one of the 2007/8 bailout plans, insurance companies often capped patients to 30 visits to a therapist per year. Not even once a week, without jumping through hoops for further treatment. Under this system, doctors got really good at slapping on those chemical bandaids, but what we don't really talk about as a society is that these medications, while very much needed in some patients, are over-prescribed as a whole and have created their own physical dependency and addiction-ish patterns because they aren't seen as 'dangerous' since they don't really get you 'high' or cause typically recognized addiction (excluding as needed anxiety medications which can cause 'typical' addiction and death). Over the years with chronic autoimmune issues of my own, doctors have tried prescribing them for pain, sleep, c-ptsd (from trauma which caused brain rewiring, not a chemical imbalance), allergies, and other reasons. Most prescribers don't even stop to notice if you're on other psychiatric medications that could be potentiated or cause polypharmocopia, as long as you're not on an MAOI. They don't pause to ask themselves if this medication is ACTUALLY needed or does it only appear to help symptoms since it can numb a patient out and 'appear' to make the symptoms less problematic, but the root issue isn't dealt with and eventually the body builds a reliance on those meds just as it can opiods or benzos, and the actual issue is still there but coming off the bandaid appears to mean withdrawal symptoms that look like the medication was actually needed, when it usually wasn't.
Watching doctors, neurologists, psych techs and nurses responding to these videos, especially Sick Boy, is fascinating, as it sometimes makes them pause and think about the issue they may be adding to by using bandaids instead of treating the core issue.
Ren's work speaks to so many because it is both about the human condition and a reality many patients who do not exclusively have a psychological/mental health condition but are treated with the same meds that cause a bunch of other issues instead of treating the root diagnoses or medical condition. It is really fascinating how entirely relatable he is to people even if they haven't experienced this pathologizing of psychiatric symptoms that arise frequently from an entirely physical condition (such as Lyme, Lupus, and a host of other autoimmune diseases). Sometimes, like Ren initially, doctors don't even pause to look for a physical cause and slap the psychiatric medications on because it is quicker and 'easier' than taking the time to look deeper.
Your reactions are all amazing and I watch all of them, but this is my first comment because this song is a good example of how one set of words can have 2 different meanings to those who hear it and both are entirely possible as being the meaning behind the words. They didn't help me, but just gave me sure effects that I had to live with. Not ONE doctor told me about that part, or the withdrawals. I had major post partum anxiety and panic attacks after the birth of my second daughter and no doctor bothered asking any questions, just wrote to a script for antidepressants. I finally weaned myself off in 2013 and just dealt with the effects. I still get brain "zaps" when I'm really tired. It's a really long story about how that med affected me over that period of time, but suffice it to say, I don't trust big pharma or doctors anymore. I'll tell my story on one of my videos perhaps.

i too have lyme disease like Ren and got misdiagnosed by the drs for a few years so damage has been done and just given so many different medications. I finally quit everything except essential meds cold turkey and said no more. This means the world for this big pharma and medical field to be exposed
I hope you are healing! Diet and the right supplements can make a world of difference. I've heard that cutting out sugar and everything processed is a huge deal when you're suffering with autoimmunity issues. I was dealing with joint pain for a while, headaches, (it hurt to move my eyes) and digestive problems with bloating. I have been basically eating keto/low carb. No processed food, no grains, no sugar. Mostly just meat, eggs and occasionally steamed veggies. No raw vegetables as they make me bloat up and look 6 months pregnant. I've had numerous other symptoms that seemingly have no cause... so diet and supplements has been my go to. "Let food be thy medicine". I have very little trust of doctors, especially after the past 3 years, as well as my own history with them that I won't bore you with... but it's all driven by money... not the desire to actually heal people. My own 'chalk outline' is the noisy space left between my Condition, side-effects from my Meds and 'desired outcome'.
Never seems to be enough 'good side-effects' to balance the awful ones.
And for every med, there's a side effect which requires another med, right? I hope you find ways to help you better than what's happening now. Blessings to you!
