I've watched many reactions to this trilogy and you are the only one who realized that he's talking about the cycle of violence. That happens all the time especially in poorer parts of the world.
It's a sad reality. I know many who have been through this cycle unfortunately. 😔
@@MrsRealistic yes too few realise this is a song set to expose the cycle of violence. I am male and left an abusive relationship with a woman, she was the victim of sexual abuse from her grandfather. So the cycles continued with her and how she treated others, myself included.
@@martinrobinson936 not enough attention is given to the fact that men are abuse victims too. It happens WAY more than people think! And those women are usually given no jail time, or much more lenient sentences when convicted. I'm glad you got away from that!
@@martinrobinson936 yea my moms dad was shot by a step daughter..and the local Sheriff called it suicide because of what was known about him. My mom always chose terrible men including my father who would beat her silly. I broke the cycle as far as me hitting women. I told myself that I'd off myself before I ever did that to a woman ..
But my codependent choice in women is where that cycle sneaks out I suppose
@@philfranklin8378 my ex did nothing physical to me, she was a narcissist, myself an empath, so psychological terror and mental abuse towards myself and to her co-workers. I never could understand why abused women could not leave their partners, even when I was being abused. Never saw myself as a victim until I broke down with a collapse of self esteem. Leaving was hard, but it was not my first attempt to leave either. But life is good now, with a supportive wife. REN’s music has touched my soul.
I've worked in adult social care for almost 20 years here in Finland. 🇫🇮 I've met so many Violets. This trilogy breaks my heart every time. 💔 Ren can paint a very, very vivid picture with just one line. He is special. ❤ I've had issues with many reactors for not getting this story - english speaking people! English is not my first language, but even I got this story. So, subscribed. Same work here in Australia. Same stories. Ren is not only a mega-talented artist; he's a powerful social commentator as well. He's not asking ' Oh why do these things keep happening?' He's saying we KNOW WHY, and clearly lays out the pathways that lead innocents like Jenny, Screech and Violet toward becoming victims and / or perpetrators. He leaves the critical question hanging, for us to ponder; "Why aren't we doing everything we can to stop this?"
# He's done exactly the same, but in a very different way, in 'Murderer'. He doesn't ASK 'What makes a Murderer?' He just TELLS us. "I was born wasted..." etc. etc.
I've had the same amazement and 'frustration' with some Reactors... JUST NOT GETTING IT! - mostly in the US. I've been reflecting on this quite a bit. This extremely concrete literal thinking pattern is not just about intellect, or a socio-economic layer thing, It's socio-cultural and absolutely systemic, including threaded right through much of the educational system, the economic system, business, politics; the works. It's embedded in the way ALL information is delivered; whether; news, education, entertainment. Nuance, subtlety, irony, is often completely missed or misunderstood.
The capacity for critical analysis seems completely absent for many, as is being able to 'join the dots'. This makes people incredibly vulnerable to manipulation; whether political messaging, or getting involved in cult type organisations, or succumbing to conspiracy theories etc.etc. And we have seen many examples of these - over and over, including emerging in political polarisation etc. which is very concerning. Not only for the country itself, but globally, especially when we consider the huge influence the USA has on the rest of the world. At the same time the vast majority of Americans are incredibly warm hearted and generous and well intentioned, and it's this that gives me hope - in this very crazy chaotic current world.. { Sorry- went off on a different 'highway'! }

Minstrels traditionally were the way people got information about what was happening. They would travel from town to village singing and telling stories, dispensing gossip, news, political scandal, ancient folklore and moral tales. In the time before most people were able to read, and didn't travel more than a few miles from home, it was their social media. Ren seems to be reviving that tradition...brilliantly.

Ren truly is a modern day bard, minstrel, and wordsmith spellbinding us with authentic stories. Absolutely brilliant and, in these performances, heart rending.
He's so good at what he does, it's stunning to witness!
Jenny inherited her mother's meekness, freezing when confronted, and Screech got his fathers violent streak. The more you listen to these songs the more you pick out.

It could be just the meekness that she inherited. On the other hand, it might also be the shock of Jenny being confronted by a knife-wielding boy who in some ways looks just like her. She may recognize the face she sees in the mirror when she pulls her hair back to apply make-up. Maybe she even knows that somewhere out there she has a twin brother that got separated in the foster system. She may have 'known' in that one instant and therefore may have been unable to move or speak. If this idea makes you too sad, remember that in this case, Jenny is still fictional. Awful things happen everyday, but I'm pretty sure the unknown siblings thing is just storytelling.
Near the start of Screech's Tale is the line "Dear Screech, dear boy, where did he go?" Ren punctuates the "where" so that it sounds just like the wail of an infant. It's a brilliant effect. By the end of the trilogy when you discover Screech was motherless it engenders compassion for him despite his criminality. It's more heartbreaking as well to realize that the Devil is no respecter of unfortunate circumstance.
Very well said! I wonder if Jenny had had a similar upbringing... we don't really know why she was walking those streets, altho I think it's hinted at that she was a prostitute...
@@MrsRealistic Yes, the clues are there. A 14-year old in high heels? A thousand times before? Wanted to escape? Even the word streetwalker is a euphemism for prostitute.
Two damaged souls without any chance to recognize their shared origin. I commented elsewhere that this video was like a parable for how far we have fallen, for how much the social fabric has unraveled. Of course it's only.fiction, but we all know this stuff happens. Sometimes art is the best reminder of that.
At the start of Violet's Tale, when Ren begins to sing, he has a dazed expression and his head bobs ever so slightly. It's part shock, part wonderment, kind of the way a newborn would see the world if their first experience was of a fluorescent-lit, trauma-filled echo chamber. And so the damage begins from day one.
@@brucegorst8005 Yes, the whole, "it takes a village to raise a child" adage, it's gone out the window for most people. No support and no knowledge passed down from generations before. We're left alone for the most part. I think that alters the way we view society as a whole.

I didn't notice the guitar switch! I'll have to look at it again! I don't know how anyone would miss the ending! It was perfect, but so tragic!
Not only did Ren illustrate violence and generational patterns between Violet, Jenny and Screech, but also the disfunction between Violet's parents and Violet herself.
Truly staggering.
Now, we need to know what happened to the policeman, the doctor and surgeon, and Stevie. I imagine that, for various reasons, they all meet their own dark ends of depression and self-destruction for the things they witnessed that night.

He really is amazing. He is so diverse and his back catalogue is fab. I have loved everything he puts out. His band The Big Push is awesome and all his collaborations have been wonderful.

From what I understand, he wrote the first 2 songs after reading an article about a very young man murdering a young woman in London, he didn't write "Violet's Tale" until a few years later and that one was of his own making. He said that there are 2 songs so far that he wrote, that he knew in his gut were special. "Hi Ren" (of course) and "Violet's Tale". He also said he feels like he has a 3rd one that fits that same feeling coming out with his new album. He has yet to release it or shoot the video. It's coming soon.
There are differing opinions on this. I’ve read that this trilogy was actually inspired by the murder of a young 14 year old schoolboy that he read about in the newspaper.

Hmm...I wonder... from the comments I've heard it was a true story of a young boy who murdered a prostitute... I'd be interested to know which is which!
I think the 4th installment to this might be Patrick's side of the story........we shall see!

Really fantastic reaction…subscribed! It was funny…go back to the beginning of Violet’s tale…shortly after you call him a minstrel…when he stops for a minute to adjust himself before starting the song…you can see him put on what is often referred to as a “minstrel’s mask”. He knows he’s about to tell this terrible story, and the storyteller himself has to mentally prepare. Ren has mentioned that telling stories like this takes a toll on him, but that the way to make them really stick is with the brutality and the shock of the twist…he wants people to remember.
First time I watched it I caught myself bopping along as he was describing the abuse, and then suddenly feeling terribly uncomfortable about truly enjoying the art and being horrified by the message at the same time.
If you want uplifting Ren, try Losing It or What you Want. Or go way back to before he even knew he had Lyme disease and was still really I’ll, but wrote a sad but also uplifting song for a documentary about ME (chronic fatigue…what the doctors told him he had) called Patience (the live one, where he’s sitting on the couch with a guitar). It’s heartbreaking and incredibly uplifting at the same time.

Minstrel is a great way to describe what he's doing. He refers to this artwork as "bardcore." I'm not sure if he coined the word, or if someone else applied the term to him, but I think that's why he opens each tale--and Hi Ren--with classical guitar intros. (I'm just repeating what's obvious or what others have said.) Modern-day Shakespeare for sure!

I just wanted to say that you have captured everything perfectly, his storytelling is amazing, so much so that I think if he wrote a screenplay that he would win every award available. I can actually visualize every scene he narrates and I don't think I have ever felt like this from any other performer. Brilliant reaction and you have a new subscriber here 👍

I initially thought he short of took a deep breath and got rid of the shivers as he was sort of preparing himself to sing Violet's part which would be hard for anyone to tell, let alone act out.

New sub here(from Scotland), just adored your reactions to the different parts of this trilogy. He truly is a modern day bard/minstrel. Let's hope the treatment he is going through in Canada right now, clears up all the vestiges of the damage that the undiagnosed Lyme disease has done to his body. Ren is surely the find of the 21st century and will likely be remembered for a long long time just like the Beatles were from the 1960's.

As others have mentioned, Ren was with a band called "The Big Push", doing covers and originals in their own inimitable style. For something cheerier featuring Ren, check some of these out. My favourites include "I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop" medley (live street performance), "Englishman In New York" and "Bongo Bong". They continue to showcase Ren's extraordinary talent and versatility, and that's without even mentioning any of the rap and hip hop styles he's so good at.

Great reaction and analysis. Just amazing how Ren, his guitar and an excellent cameraman (his mate Sam), can take material so horrific and tragic, and turn it into a very compelling and entertaining story. No drums, no bass, no keyboards, no backing vocals. Simply stellar! I mean, even a movie (which this was like a short film) has a soundtrack playing in the background. Another thing that amazes me with Ren’s guitar skills, is that he often is not looking at his guitar and he plays on the move., not just flat ground. He’s moving up and down stairs and singing while keeping a cadence with his guitar. If you want something light from Ren, try his song “1990s”.

I've noticed Ren always writes tales about subjects that are dear to his heart and I feel sure this was ripped from the pages of reality. They are so direct you can see he is not doing it to be clever or showy, it is history and a plea from an angel..

@@MrsRealistic Ren's father bought him a small beat up guitar from a flea market when he was 8 years old, he took it everywhere teaching himself to play.
Ren's parents took him to Renaissance Fairs or 'Ren Faire' (seems apropos), and Britain has a history of Pantomime theater. So the Bard or Troubadour style was likely something he took in from an early age.
When Ren was early in his illness and couldn't leave his bed or room very often, he would have ideas about lyrics and spend hours composing, he says he has thousands of songs on hard drives from that time. So he's well practiced in working over lyrics and ideas.
There are few, some very long, interviews with Ren that cover both his illness and his music history.

Great reaction to this one. What this does is open the up the conversation about a subject that sits in the shadows and many of us are aware of. "it's such a shame" is that generic reaction to such horrible outcomes. I think from what has been suggested the first two parts were based on a newspaper piece about a young boy stabbing a prostitute. Ren I believe then added the 3rd part much later to complete the trilogy? Ren can lift you back up. Maybe go and listen Power or him and the band he was in The Big Push covering I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop.

Great teaction. Ren is highlighting a number of issues - chld sex abuse (to Violet), domestic violence, possibly chikd rxploitation (what was Jenny doing on street in high heels at night??), teenage drug use (Screech), knife violence, armed Police, a recurring cycle of violence.
Ren is a genius storyteller, musician a modern day Shakespearean actor.
Would love to see him fill theatres and also branch into films.

It was good to see you immediately made all the connections at the end and understood the story - many reactors sadly don't and miss the full impact. As you mention ed reggae a couple of times I highly recommend watching Ren performing I Shot the Sheriff / Road to Zion / Hip Hop mash up with his band The Big Push as it is absolutely amazing and will give you another side of Ren.

Nice reaction and you got the link straightaway - many reactors don't (maybe too caught up in the performance). I get frustrated with some reactions when they miss the line "he swung possessed with the devil in his chest"....missing that he killed her. It's surprising how many actually miss that, some never catch it, even through the whole story. Also, for "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. Powerful stuff. Not sure if you caught it or not, but he did all 3 songs in a single take each, just like "Hi Ren". In the "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance. Did you catch the rewinding of time with his guitar? The man is truly special.
Wow, I don't know how anyone could miss that he killed Jenny... Now that I've had a few people bring it up.. yes I bet his girl and Patrick were together, which is why he got so enraged! It makes perfect sense! There is so much in this tale and I'm going to have to go back a few times to probably really see and hear everything. He a musical genius.
@@GhostWatcher2024 how cool! Yes, you're right, if Ren had said Jenny was 14 it wouldn't have been the same effect and the secret might have been revealed accidentally before the last video ended. When he mentions high heeled shoes, one doesn't think of a 14 year old, but she was probably a prostitute.

I know this is old but i feel i mist mention that Jenny being a prostitute is very accurate. The first two parts of this song was based on a newspaper article about a young man killing a prostitute. Violet's Tale was completely made up years later as an add on.
I think Jenny was a sweet girl, she lived in Camden Town hence Ren saying she knew this town, she was wearing high heels because she dressed like Amy Winehouse who lived in Camden and Jenny walked the streets looking for all the graffiti’s dedicated to Amy which is all over Camden, On the statue in Camden Market of Amy she’s wearing high heels. I’ve done a vid about Jenny with all the evidence to prove this theory

He wrote this song in 2019 actually, 2019 - 2005 = 14. Both Jenny and Screech were 14 years old. Never met their mother or father for obvious reasons. Stevie, their father, went to prison for the murder of their mother, Violet. They were separated at birth and never knew each other. Essentially, Screech killed his sister and never knew
Stevie wasn't the father of Jenny and Screch. Ren explains Violet moved out the family home at 16, here in the UK a girl can get a council flat if she's pregnant. He explains she met stevie after she'd moved out and was working at tesco. So Violet was already pregnant. Her father was abusing her, so she was having children of incest. Jenny and Screeches father was also their grandfather. Listen to Violets story again. He says Stevie n her met after she moved out of home. She was already pregnant.

The cycle of abuse still needs to be understood by more people, it's all connected. It doesn't take much to push someone as abused and messed up as Screech over the edge. He's been cuckolded by his friend, he would have trust issues, but he's still thinking he loves these people, "Babe", Patrick, the third guy etc. No one has taught him what love is. He never knew it.
"But Screech kept on knocking...." that guitar part jumps into my head at the oddest times! I think it's powerful too because of the contrast.
For some reason, despite listening to and watching this song countless times, watching it this time with you made me cry more than I ever have before. I grew up in this violence, well I ran away at 14 so not quite grown up, my dad did what violet's did, and my mum most definitely knew, but never left or took me to safety. It's not easy to listen to, yet also helpful to hear it articulated in art. The first time I ever heard it was Lou Reed singing on Berlin when I was very young, 14 years old. Wow! That really made an impression on me and possibly saved my life though it was a fine tightrope as saving my life meant running away and living in the streets and in squats. Then there was Suzanne Vega. Some of the songs if you've never listened (in the vein of this subject of abuse and people art-iculating it) Bad Wisdom, Rock in this Pocket, As a Child and my favourite song of empowerment, ever, so simple, In the Eye. Of course everyone knows Luka. Now Ren. He's talking about what has been rarely talked about in music. And I suspect Chinchilla's songs are going to help me along a lot too, so far they have!

@@MrsRealistic Well he's a bit sick now Ren was misdiagnosed a decade ago by doctors. He actually had Lime Disease but they thought his mind was playing tricks and gave him strong drugs and the Lime disease ran amuck for 7-8 years. He is currently in Canada receiving treatment to undo all the damage done. his life was dramatically shortened by the misdiagnosis but he is doing his best to stay in shape and recover all the stolen years past & future. but you never know i agree with you I'd love to see a musical by Ren.

I completely agree with your rock reggae comment. Ren's often said he's influenced by the Police, but the opening line of 'Jenny's Tale' to me sounds like it could've been Sublime. Indeed, when he says "London City," it sounds like Bradley (from Sublime, RIP) singing "LBC" (Long Beach, California).

Not just a song. This is real and gritty modern street theatre, (combining a blend of old world techniques and modern genres ) and Ren is the entire theatre company: actor, singer, orchestra, director, script writer, location designer, acoustics manager... EVERYTHING! { And let us not forget the brilliant Camera Work -Flow and Lighting Direction of the Videographer; Sam.} Just a Masterpiece.

There are so few artists that choose to show the hard realities of life and the world we live in quite like Ren and also NF. The reality of trauma on the human soul and the consequences on society for ignoring the pain and suffering going on all around us with governments more concerned about GDP and how they're perceived on the world stage rather then concentrating on helping people live a more purposeful life with a more community led approach.
These songs make me want to try harder with my life and the people around me.

About the very beginning - He is portraying a bard getting ready for a performance. The muted trumpet sound is actually a vocal warm-up technique. Then he coughs to get ready to sing his tale.
Our vocal warms ups in choral and choir was "Me, may, my, mo, moo" 😆
