Quincy Jones (who conducted this track...) told everyone participating to leave their ego at the door - and so they did. I highly doubt we'll ever see the like, ever again. The late, great Ray Charles is the one at the piano. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie co-wrote this piece - Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian produced it. The message of this song is as relevant today, as it was at the time it was recorded, back in late January, 1985.
I don't think any group could ever be able to come even close to the special feeling of this song. At the time these were the greatest singers available. It took a long time for the stars to be grouped so their distinguishable voices carried the song.

Aww, I haven't seen this video for a long time...That was once in a lifetime opportunity, all those stars, in one place, egos put aside for a higher purpose. And that "geezer" from the beginning, the gentleman with grey hair and beard... that's Kenny Rogers, what a voice, sadly, not with us any more (as, unfortunately, many from this video)

These Legends checked their egos at the door, came together And recorded this in the middle of the night.

I read a story that all the stars showed up in limos and Springsteen came in a pickup truck driving himself. Every time I see this I cry. Beautiful reaction. Another song What More Can I GIve. It was recorded after 9/11.She was not normally released due to MJ's problems with Sony. But it is a great song with Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Ciline Dion, Ricky Martin, Usher, Nick Carter, Justin Timberlake, Mariah Carey, Santana, Gloria Estefan, Shakira...
Great reaction! It was amazing to see all those fabulously talented people in the same room singing together. We haven't had an event like that recently, you are right. There are so many places in the world that could use that help right now, that it would be hard to choose. Thanks for this and keep up the great reactions.
Your awesome comment about 'where are the artists today' etc.....POINT ON!! Just before you said that, I was thinking the same thing. As an old Woodstock hippie....these artists were our people back then -- and still are!!
So many legends I could tell you (understandably!!) didn't know. Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Cindi Lauper. The good news is there is so much more music to react to. The talent doesn't exist to do this today.
I’m just gonna add in these comment that though MJ, Quincy and Lionel get all the props (and rightly)….the one person most responsible for this never gets mentioned. The oldest person in the room, Harry Belafonte. He came up with the idea, he and his partner approached others who said no to it. MJ and Quincy were just the first to agree to take it on.,
The man standing by Harry Belafonte is comic actor Dan Ackroyd. Dan was one of the early SNL cast members. And an awesome musician as well. He was half of SNL music/comedy duo the Blues Brothers with John Belushi. And in the middle of it all is 60's voice of his generation and counter-culture icon, Bob Dylan. FYI - his son Jakob Dylan fronted 90's singing sensation group The Wallflowers. Michael Jackson wrote this song and it was produced by Quincy Jones. Like others in the day, I counted down the days to watch it's debut on MTV or VH1. I don't remember which one. The pairing of Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen was genius. Their voices contrasted beautifully.
Stevie Wonder did the thumbprint. There's a making of this music video on RUclips that shows him doing it. Everyone was excited to see each other and were giving others their autographs and hugs. The picture with the autographs became a poster. Even superstars can be fans of other artists. It's in the RUclips making of this video. Helping each other out when needed. A sign outside the door saying Leave your egos at the door. And they did.
now more than ever we should be united and feel connected. So many legends in one room, it's a shame we've lost many of those great voices. Everyone in that room was known and loved worldwide. Music now just seems to be missing something. To me, it doesn't have the same passion and impacts it did back then.
WOWZERS HAP!! ELO’s 👉 ALL OVER THE WORLD. USA for Africa WE ARE THE WORLD 👉 Now do MJ’s 👉 HEAL THE WORLD. Gotta do Queen’s 👉 IS THIS THE WORLD WE CREATED 👑👍
The musicians back then could actually sing for one. They didn't need autotune to sound good. They were also able to put aside their egos to come together to do this. Before this happened the British artists did 'Let them know it's Christmas'
Those were all your heavy hitters from America in that day of the music industry, you know, the day where you had to have talent to be a singer or musician, not just looks and auto tune will take care of the rest...lol The Geezer as you called him, is Kenny Rogers, one of the greats, you should check in to him, he is really good, actually they are all really good, look into any of them you didn't know. Glad you liked it :) I'm just trying to figure out how Dan Aykroyd got in there, I didn't know he sang. He didn't do a solo, but was in the chorus, was wearing a brown jacket along the back, they do a coupld of close ups of him, he was sooo young!!
That was Al Jarreau at the beginning i totally forgot he was in this! The lineups don't get any better than these people freaking legends!! and they all did it for free not to mention this was recorded right after an awards show so these people were literally up all night to do this! No "superstar" these days would do that.
With the Ethiopian famine in '84-'85 artists got together to raise funds to help. Thus this song from the US. Canada also did it with their artistsa singing "Tears Are Not Enough" and in Britain they did it with "Do They Know It's Christmas". A concert was perfomed in Philadelphia and London with the greatest bands and was simulcast with one third of the world watching it live during which I was in Canada taking donations over the phone. That was the humanity of the day.
I haven’t seen this in a long time. So many legends together!! Amazing!! The thumbprint was Stevie Wonder’s I believe. Great reaction HAP!! It would be cool if today’s generation did some similar!! That would be so cool!! 🌻🌻
100% agree. 90% of the "Artist" couldnt do this. Take away the autotune and they are nothing. However put the 10% together that can really do it. Epic !
Great, great reaction as usual friend! This was such a beautiful compilation of so many extremely talented performers who got together for ONE night under the direction of Quincy Jones with Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie. It was a favorite of mine especially while enjoying the video for a long time. To see all these artists leave their egos at the door as they were instructed to do by the director Quincy Jones and work for hours into the night to combine so many different styles of voice, character and genres of performers was absolutely inspiring. Of course my favorite of the group was the Voice...Steve Perry who I wish had been given more to sing, but in the end it was all perfectly worked out. There is a video that was made during the taping and production of how the song and video came together and it’s actually quite interesting to see how it all came together. I thought about that when you mentioned what it must have been like for each performer when it was their turn if they forgot their lyrics. Trust me, in the video, The Making of We Are The World, they show how many times and takes and re-do’s and changes were made to get to the masterful outcome. Even and especially down to Ray Charles when it came to his parts. Watching him play, sing and dance in front of the piano was something to witness. There was also some comedy when it came to Cyndi Lauper’s part because of all of her jewelry and the noises that were being picked up on the recording when she was jumping around. I agree with you and only wish that we still had those type of amazing artists around that would be willing and able to give it a go again for relief for other great causes that are so desperately needed in our world today. Always love watching the music fill you with emotion and take you to a new place with each reaction. I would absolutely LOVE to see your reaction to a solo by Steve Perry that is absolutely gorgeous and perfectly crystal clear. Steve’s voice is hauntingly beautiful and powerful while telling a beautiful message the way most Journey songs do. The song is called “Missing You.” It’s from a solo album called For The Love of Strange Medicine. You can search for the live version on RUclips which is astounding and there is also an official video in which Steve is in the video. Enjoy friend and thanks for the great reaction♥️

Your awesome comment about 'where are the artists today' etc.....POINT ON!! Just before you said that, I was thinking the same thing. As an old Woodstock hippie....these artists were our people back then -- and still are!!
There is a behind the scenes video that show how they took HOURS to do this one song.
There is another video that was done for charity. It is called "Do they know it's Christmas".
I love your reaction when you see Steve Perry in this. Whenever I see this video I get goosebumps when I see and hear Steve ❤.
Love your reaction and letting song play. This song was amazing in 1985 and still is today!
We Are The World is a Beautiful Song. Another great song from the 80's that i love & became #1 in the USA, True Colors by Cyndi Lauper.
I was 4 years old when this was done, I’m 40 now!
They all did this for free, including the technicians setting microphones, etc. Takes a lot of work to do that.
Made tons of money to donate during a major poverty situation in Africa
Love your passionate reaction!
Such a legendary song and the video n ur heartfelt reaction! Perfect ✨✨💕 Thanks
Also.
You can tell how old the video is, because of the talent. Back then , you had to have talent , not IG followers.
I love and agree with everything you said.
Michael Jackson & Quincy Jones wrote the song. Of course MJ had his own mic.
now more than ever we should be united and feel connected. So many legends in one room, it's a shame we've lost many of those great voices. Everyone in that room was known and loved worldwide. Music now just seems to be missing something. To me, it doesn't have the same passion and impacts it did back then.
💯
Loved your reaction. Music used to unite us. We need to get it back again!☮️❤️🙏
1985.. I graduated HS.. To this day.. what an amazing song...
WOWZERS HAP!! ELO’s 👉 ALL OVER THE WORLD. USA for Africa WE ARE THE WORLD 👉 Now do MJ’s 👉 HEAL THE WORLD. Gotta do Queen’s 👉 IS THIS THE WORLD WE CREATED 👑👍
😬😬
Yes, we do need something like this today!
Dan Aykroyd was indeed a singer. He, along with John Bilouchi were The Blue's BROTHERES A
Dude, that “gentleman” is Paul Simon, one of the biggest music stars of the last 50 years.
I love his song and video "Call Me Al."
Merry Christmas 🎄 to you, your father and family Hap. Stay safe and God bless! Did you hear Dr Brian May has Covid?
I heard he is on the road to recovery
@@HAP3SPEAKZ Yes, Brian was on RUclips and Instagram saying he was doing much better!
It is incredible when talent comes together with a single objective, the purpose of genuinely helping those who need our help.
I’d find something from everyone that had a solo - you don’t recognize…. You’ll find gems everywhere 🤘😎❤️
This is such a great reaction
Hello. Unfortunately, you are right about catching the best music of the last 100 years, as you say. I was lucky (I am 68 years old)
