I worked for a company that made TP. We called the cheap single ply TP John Wayne TP, because it wouldn't take cr@p off of anybody.

      YES! 😂
This was one of my dad's favorite "dad jokes" he told us as kids in the 80s. It was a tad longer, and the setup was someone shopping for TP at their local store (K-mart, Walmart, Target, etc), and there were too many TP options. Something like that.
Anyway, I wish I could remember the whole thing. I'll ask my dad today, who's over 70 now. I bet he'll get a kick out of me asking!

It's also one of the biggest marketing mindfucks. Sure it's cheaper, but you have to use twice as much, so no savings at all. That and it's more likely to tear when using it, and nobody wants that shit...

Scotts isn't cheap toilet tissue. Yes, it is 1 ply and you may need more. However, the Angel Soft is 2 ply. So 6 sheets is like 12. If you double up on Scotts you'd still be using the same amount as the AS. Like Eric said, it is about personal preference. I grew up on Scotts and prefer it. I get a Walmart brand that is generic Scotts for 1/2 the price and like it better, but when that is out, Scotts is the next choice. I can't stand Angel Soft and thick TP.

    • @IKARIANOFFICIAL

@@IssuesWithMyTissues - Yeah, I'm surprised that so many, including Eric, failed to notice that the first Scott's TP was single ply. I prefer Scotts single ply, as it doesn't flake apart when wiping the behind like the angel soft usually does. Wiping with single ply (even if you really bundle it up while wiping) will leave less TP residue on your behind than softer tissues.

We don't have an RV but we have a 60 year old home and we switched to Cascades Pro toilet paper that we buy online in 40 something rolls quantities. It dissolves beautifully and we've never had to have a company come snake out our line in the 3 years since we switched. We use Costco banded toilet paper in our RV. I added a additional sewer gate valve on the very end prior to attaching the hose. I dump the black tank. Then I close that valve in front of the hose and open the gray water tank and black tanks together. Water flows from the gray tank into the back tank until equalized. Then I close the gray tank and open the additional valve. This allows some gray water in the black tank to rinse out the black tank. Then drain the remaining gray water out.

Before I changed out my toilet to one with a conventional seat so I could mount a real bidet, I did something else. I got a 1 1/2 gal garden sprayer and with the help of a blow dryer, heated and reshaped the wand. I’ve got a bidet of sorts that worked great and cut down on TP usage. Just me.

2 ply means 2 squares together to make one square. It is literally twice the TP compared to a single ply. So your Angel soft sample actually had 12 squares worth of paper in it. Hence the larger wad and greater weight!
We like regular ol Charmin TP. We used Angel soft at home for 20 years or more, but made the switch to Charmin after using some at a relatives house. Then add water to the bowl before a #2, flush afterwards, add more water to the bowl, wipe, then flush again. When we empty the black tank, it flows fast due to the water to solid ratio. This is also not a septic tank. Solids won’t have time to break down. No anaerobic action going on. Extra liquids are needed to move the chunks!

TMI coming at you but as a female, I use Scott for reasons other than it's comfort ability and RV tanks. The other "quilted" TP brands leave awful fuzzies. For example, here is a test for you... shave your face, then the next day when you have a little stubble, dab a little water on your cheeks and then try to wipe it off with your quilted TP. It's HORRIBLE! haha Scott is smooth and leaves no fuzzies. I guess if you keep nice thick bushes around your porch, then quilted is good, but if you shave that shit down, it's a no go.

I've used Scott TP for 34 yrs!!! My hunny has never gotten sore from the TP! However, my S-in-law hates my TP! In 20 yrs we never needed to pump our septic system using this TP until the county made a law that it had to be done every 3 yrs. I'll get the s-in-l a roll of Angel Soft for his future visits. Hope you had fun doing this one!!

I had a few clogs early but none now. Water and #1 are you friend and solve the clog issues if you have one. I use the Costco Kirkland brand and have had great success with that one. If I plan to stay for say a month at at time I even fill the black tank with 3-5 min of water since I know I won’t be moving to help the break up, that way it empties better.

I have a septic tank at my house and I have been guilty of peeing outside (I live in a secluded area) to save on well water. Now I know I shouldn't do that. BTW Charmin Extra Soft has been my brand for years.

You needn't worry about that, flushing toilet is a lot of water plus sink water and even laundry water. Plenty of water to solids ratio 🤙🏼

This is a sore spot of argument in my house. I know too much tmi but I like the Scott’s and others in my house...like you, enjoy the fluffy stuff. When we go on a trip we buy the pricy RV paper which I hate and others in my family refuse to use. They have delicate tushies..lol I am kinda glad you did this experiment. Now I can bring my sandpaper and be happy. lol

What I want to see is a video or discussion that actually does this demonstration using actual bodily waste. I bet the chemical compounds in those substances also have a lot to do with how the paper performs. Also maybe actually drive around for a bit and maybe let the paper sit for two days to simulate sitting for the duration of a weekend trip.
I do like your version of the test though. The amount of fluids does affect the draining.
Install a bidet. Once you do, the whole experience changes forever.

The biggest mistake RV newbies do on a regular basis is to think they can leave the valves open when fully hooked up in an RV park. That creates the infamous "solids" pyramid at the bottom of the black tank (the ultimate bad ratio between liquids and solids ;). A good rule is to never try to empty the black tank if it's below 50%. And while you in theory "could" leave the gray tank valve open when hooked up in an RV park, it's also not the best idea, because you want to use the gray tank to flush out the hose after a black tank dump (that's another rule, always dump the black first, then the gray, never the other way around! ;).

Some tv's have a built in flush like mine. Plus our tank is on the other side of the RV don't forget your breakdown additive.

If your RV is equipped with a black tank flush connection, flush the tank for several minutes after each dump and close the dump valve JUST BEFORE turning off the water supply to the flush connection. This will automatically help with that liquid/solids ratio which Eric is so very spot on about.

This was a great video Eric. We use the Camco RV Toilet Paper and have for years. I would add we are not full-timers so it’s expensive but not so much when we only go out one or two weekends a month, Spring Break, two weeks in summer, a week at Thanksgiving, and a week at Christmas but we’ve never had a problem. You are spot on about the liquids. We usually put extra water in the black before we flush, then use the black tank flush also. Great info!

don't forget one ply has half the TP that 2 ply has i.e. 1 PLY one sheet ... two ply two sheets ... so 6 sheets vs 12 sheets. Plus I do have a wand however there is and exterior hose connection to spray the inside the holding tank to clean it out... I think there is a pressure fitting inside the tank. Great show Eric.

Very biased with the fork test lol. The angel soft you only picked at with the tip of the fork which made it tear more easily instead of scooping it up with the entire fork the way you did with the scotts dissolve :P

Each boat that has any number of people living onboard has to either hold their sewage in a tank until they can reach a dock and discharge to the marina dock (like an RV at a sewage dump) OR the boat has a small sewage treatment plant onboard (towboats, tugboats, cruise ships, other large vessels). When using a sewage treatment plant, use any toilet paper BUT Charmin. Charmin has bits of cloth mixed in with the paper. The cloth clogs up the masserater and thus disables the sewage treatment plant. Every other piece of TP is pure paper and disolves/breaks up quickly. The sewage plants must be fed bacterial “bugs” every two weeks and keep chlorine between the plant holding tank ank the overboard discharge port.
The solution to a clogged up/caked up black tank is: 20LBS of ice cubes followed by a two hour drive around town with lots of stops, starts, and 90 degree turns, & then to a dump to dump everything out!

Been a rv owner for 11yrs and never have I had a blockage but I have friends that won’t even go #2 in their rv because of the fear of clogs! I do use a enzyme and I buy the cheapest tp we can find. On a side note I’ve worked for 23yrs for a municipal sewer dept in Illinois and yes you are 100% correct, water and plenty of it is your friend when it comes to not having black tank issues! Good info!

I agree the main thing to do is keep a lot of liquid in the black holding tank. I use Costco's Kirkland toilet paper, and it works fine. A big mistake a lot of people make is when they are at a campground with full hookups is to leave the black tank valve open. If you do that the solids stay, and the liquids go down the drain. Then when you want to empty the tank there is no liquid to make the solids flow. Keep the valve closed, and build up the fluids for a good flush when you drain the tank.

This "test" tells me you don't use chemicals for the 11years you've been doing this. Not only do chemicals have deodorizers, they also have enzymes which break up solids like turds and paper. Try that test again with a black tank treatment.

We normally use the Kirkland brand TP, no issues in 6 years of RVing. I do remember watching a video years ago about the proper care and use of your RV black tank. Adding a whole bowl full of water to the tank after #2 was highly advised.

Don’t forget! If you have a lot of girls in the RV, you will have a lot of toilet paper in your tank. Girls have to wipe after they pee and they tend to use a lot of toilet paper. Our system with a septic system and all girls was to put pee paper in the trash can and burn it with the burn trash in the country. We put our used toilet paper in the trash can in the RV now just to conserve. Oh! And I also have an RV with a nature’s head composting toilet. I put all my paper in the trash. Way better compost mixture and you can go a month between dumping it 👌🏽
