Hope you guys enjoyed this one! A big thanks to everyone who submitted a design, and if you'd like to submit your work for the next video, send me an email at bscritiques@gmail.com. Which logo was your favorite?
The only issue I had with the third one is that the entire personality of the design was taken away and replaced with some simplified version, I have no issue with good looking simplified logo’s , but I really do miss back when logo’s had more personality, great work on the other ones man!
I think part of it is that in the original, the girl is sort of looking at the camera, she's tilted a little, but in the redesign she's just looking off to the right like one of them bored ape nfts.
I really expected him to make the font thinner and more handwritten-looking, and I think it would have been the right call if the design would have been implemented. Ultimately though he chose his more extreme idea, which is more informative for the company’s owner.
I think with the Green Eggs and RAM logo, a thing that also symbolizes a computer could be the mouse. And mice tend to kinda have an egg shape as well.
Yeah the Green Eggs and Ram logo was kind of a miss for me, wouldn't have the text inside the egg or anywhere at all. Would look way better as just a playful egg shaped mouse as you said.
I kind of agree with this comment. I didn't mind the Green Eggs & Ram text inside the egg, but once the circuit board elements were added, it took away the negative space and made it too busy. The egg could have been made to also be a mouse by adding a little bit of mouse cord coming out the top.
@@ryanmauricio2323 for me, I actually really loved the redesign. Came to the comments to see if anyone else did and was shocked to see this comment and that it had so many likes lol Also, it kinda already looks like a mouse tbh. The only reason you’d 100% think it’s an egg is if you saw this video and heard him say it’s an egg. It’s pretty cool imo that it could be interpreted as an egg or a computer mouse lol
For the troop one i liked most improvements but the sunglasses and the outline on the scarve. The original sunglasses have much more of certain vibe to them.
tbh halee's logo was better,, the other redesigns were solid,, brandon's improved alot since then so it'd be a great video idea to revisit these old videos
I think the reason so many people (including me) feel that Troop's oiriginal personality was lost in the redesign is that instead of changing the text to fit the illustration, you changed the illustration to fit the text. The illustration is what gave the logo its personality, not the text. It could have been improved of course, the necktie should have been a solid color, using a different color for the hair would have framed the face a lot better and given the whole illustration a more defined silouette and the collar wasn't necessary (though I do really like the extra flair it adds but I could be fine with it going or staying as well). I also think that although the variety of line weight is a large part of the illustration's personality, some more careful attention to where exactly the lines got thinner and thicker could have made it look a lot cleaner. But the main thing is, I definetely think the font should have been adjusted to fit the illustration and not the other way around. Of course I'm not a graphic designer, I have been doing art basically since I could hold a pencil so I have some translateable knowledge but obviously the two are entirely different beasts, but I do still think shifting your basic approach to the redesing could have preserved the original's feel a lot better, even if the specifics are definetely best left to you.
This was exactly my thought, and I was really surprised when he changed the picture to fit the text rather than the other way around. I just thought it seemed so obvious that the text needed to be changed to fit the illustration that I hadn't even considered the other option. Definitely a poor choice.
@@AidanBuelingI also thought like that It felt kind of wierd that he did it that way, especially after talking that text could have been more similar to the picture
I’m a major In Graphic design and I completely agree, having varied stoke weights in the illustration gives a more organic look. It’s much more appropriate to adjust the text to fit the illustration because we should also take into account that the logo may need to be applied to other packaging items or stickers where the text won’t be very legible or necessary, so the illustration is what gives the brand it’s main identity, if there are going to be scenarios where text isn’t applied the illustration has to be carefully considered which I think it definitely was.
I loved all the redesigns! I think the redesign for the last one lost a bit of the "adult" flair the original one had with the thinner lines (?), but this is coming from a consumer only standpoint with no art background. Your creativity and thought process is amazing to watch.
as someone with an art background (but not a graphic design one), i also liked the first one better. The illustration was giving me vintage vibes which i thought fitted the topic better, and as a whole it just felt more "ornate", which while i understand the need for simplicity, is still something I feel is somewhat missing with the redesign. Also the pastel colors felt a bit more feminine, which is something i associate with bakeries more.
As someone with a graphic design background I can tell you the original illustration looks really good as an illustration, but for a logo tiny and slim lines like that are often a Problem, imagine you want to print it out smaller (put the logo on the head of a letter or whatever) for exampel the white lines on the glasses could look like an "error" from the printer because they are just to slim. If you squeeze your eyes while looking at the comparison of the logos you can tell that the yellow of the cloth around her neck is not as visible in the original version. Overall I really like the design! (both original and "redesign") But for a logo changes of that sort would make sense, its also really helpful to print out a design, you can really tell which lines could be problematic since a printed out image looks really different compared to your screen. I hope my english made sense at all. :')
As another person with graphic design background who can't shut up, I'm going to agree that the first absolutely looks better. Now as the other person mentioned, it *is* more impractical because of the thin lines, and so truly, it'd only really work on a higher scale. But the redesign takes out all of the vintage and more mature vibes that the original logo has, and turns it more corporate looking (I felt that the ice cream logo also turned too corporate as well). It's usually in cases like these where you then talk with the customer about what they want/need to use the logo for, as, if you only need it in a big and medium sized format, you could just settle on making the lines a little thicker, removing anything excess, and call it a day. I would definitely try to keep it fun, keep the hair blond, and try to keep it looking vintage if it was me 😌 Though this is also just a testamony of how you get a different result by hiring different graphic designers lol. I became a graphic designer due to my background in art, so my brain automatically turns to "How do I preserve the artistic feel of this" when redesigning logos, versus Brandons approach of "How do I turn this logo as optimal to print as possible". It's crucial to think of both! But it's *when* you start thinking about those things that drastically change the results lol. Hope my comment didn't bore you !!
@@AmalieLinden Very well said! @@BrandonShep That's a great way of putting it and I totally agree, I love seeing someone discuss their process with actual design vocabulary and getting to the root of why they are adding certain things.
For the first one Banook and Timber, the original in my opinion made me have more joy. Your version was still good though I’m not saying it’s bad. Green Eggs and Ram you nailed however. The third one however was good, but too simplified. Also the Bakery Pop Up helped the description of it. Still great work though your amazing. Keep it up!
I like both of the ice cream logos, however I feel more drawn to the original as it is more complex giving it the look that I has probably been designed back when these logos were like this in the 1900’s. This gives it a sense of originality and personally think it would look great with a “since 1937” tagline or something to make it seem like it’s existed longer. The new one yiu made is more up to standards with the 21st century and also works great for modernity
I still think all the parts looked really nice but it was far too much in such a small space. As he said you can bring back other elements like the animal banners (which I liked a lot) on other parts of the packaging and marketing.
The text on the last logo was a great improvement, but I really enjoyed the original illustration better. The other 2 logos were very much improved, and overall you do great work Brandon!
I might be biased due to being a massive nerd, but the Green Eggs & Ram redesign is by far my favorite. You were given pure, 24 karat gold with that brand name, and made diamonds out of it. **chef's kiss**
The first two logos I could see the positives and all.. the last one felt like a total transformation. That was real art! I thought the FIRST one was really good already.
This is the way to simplify logos. I feel like with simplified logos these days they are repetitive and bring aspects away from the original design, I know this was made 2 years ago, but great stuff man!
Wow, saw this on Reddit and am shocked to see you only have 1.5k subs! Your design skills are fantastic and your presentation is top notch. I love how you go through the thought process. Please do more of these, this is so useful.
I love the respectful approach that Brandon has with the old logo work of those companies, while still finding some paths to introduce better concepts and adjustments.
Banook & Timbers was beautiful and excellently done, Green Eggs and Ram was pure fun genius, and I actually think I preferred the outcome of Troops original design better but understood and learned a lot from your decisions about the design. Great stuff!
Thanks so much, Brandon! You did and awesome job on all three!! Your tweaks made total sense and finally put into words what felt kind of “off” about it.
Unfortunately he totally missed that the name isn’t Banook & Timbers, it’s Banook & Timbers’. The logo should have incorporated the bear and beaver because the whole idea is that the bear and beaver own the creamery.
The 3rd design- the original was better imho. I do like it without the typeface down the sides, and the larger scarf with the collar removed. But I preferred her original silhouettes and colors, as well as the typeface for TROOP. The other two were improved, but I was sad we lost the concept of a bear and a beaver 😢
I love the redesign of the Troop Detroit logo, bc by using shapes instead of strokes, you can get a variety of skintones into the logo and make it more diverseby just changing the colors and background. The OG defenetly looked a little dated back in the mid 2010's, but this new has a lot more personality, and defenetly looks more grown up.
I appreciate how you show your editing process, all the thought behind it. Just one guy's opinion: for the ice cream, the original logo was pretty good, almost like a beer logo. I agree it's too busy... Just needed to remove the shapes with the mascots in them. The wide shield is better. The original speaks with pride, the new one is unsure of itself. Okay just one opinion, again I love the video, thank you Second logo is great. I felt a kind of nostalgia for the style of the original, the Cooper font, spelling out the word "and", and your version is very different and does not bring forth nostalgia, but it is still better than the original, and I love how you humanized it, that made all the difference
Very tempted to redesign the original Troop illustration with thick contour lines and thin cross contour lines to make it visually more cohesive. Otherwise, the original looks pretty good to me; it reminds me of an old school stamp. Even the text on the sides of the illustration look good (though my graphic design professor would pitch a fit over having text aligned from top to bottom).
My man went 0 for 3 here. Number 2 didn't give you much to work with. That being said, I've learned more about design from this guy in 2 days of watching than I ever knew in my life.
It does, but it feels like a clothing logo rather than ice-cream. It reminds me of the Timberlands logo. Simple, expensive. I don't fancy the original logo but I would pick up the original one because it's distinct and clear on its message. The redesign feels hidden and corporate but sellable because it's aesthetically pleasing, simple and modern. That's just me probably tho
For the first one, one thing that kinda bugs me is that you didn't add the Bear and the Beaver, I mean, there was a story behind it, and now there isn't.
I like Green Eggs & RAM, because it shows that you adapt to the customer. It would look odd in a portfolio, but in video form where you explain your process, it is awesome.
you are so wholesome and relaxing to watch. I just like watching your videos to calm down, it's so satisfying to see a design take form because I feel like I'm right there learning from you. Thanks!
The OG Troop logo looked like a chic stylish blonde for a modern bakery. The redesign looks like some old timey military girl. And there’s no indication whatsoever that it’s a bakery
i'm shocked i'm just now finding out about your channel! most def binge watching all the videos you have so far. i really enjoy this video bc i struggle with logo designing, & to hear + see your process is so helpful. thank you for taking the time to make & edit these videos for us, i highly appreciate it! (:
I didn't realize how cool logo design is until I found this guy and the one who redesigns people's business adverts for free. But it is like magic, it's so cool !
I like your website, Logo Lab, will surely be using it. 1st & 2nd logos were really challenging and I love what you did. My favorite was Green Eggs & RAM. More UI design Please.
For the banook and Timbers ice cream I believe it was meant to look like a Boy Scouts wilderness badge which I really liked, getting rid of the stitching and cross hatches kinda took away that vibe and I still prefer the first one. You also got rid of the bear and the beaver which were an enjoyable mascot
I think one of the major issues with the troop redesign is the face shape. There was a cool confidence to the original sketch which is lost in the new one, but I do appreciate that some changes need to be made. The thick glasses tint is definitely a concrete example of something I would not have included. (The first logo redesign is very good)
I like the idea that its a badge like the kind you iron onto a shirt so it has a stitched quality to it I would go with it looks less generic and more true to the original design.
I think the Green Eggs and RAM logo needs a longer version too - if the name is on the storefront, it'll probably be on a squat, wide panel. Obviously that would be as simple as putting the text in a line and putting a textless version of the egg next to it.
The 3rd one is something that I don't enjoy about designing logos. The original logo was beautiful but your rework was a better logo because of the clarity and simplicity. It just feels like a shame to lose the original illustration which was so nice.
I clicked on this solely because Green Eggs and Ram is a local biz (the funny thing is they still use their old logo on like 90% of everything. Yours is better.)
This is great designing overall, great job. One thing I would change in the last one is to make the letters a bit taller and maybe elongate the T and P downwards to make it more rustic/vintage just to give a more girl scout-ish vibe. That's just me though
For the Troop logo, in the color changing part at the end, I think it would be better to add a white outline and keep the face with the intended color palette, because they don't look very good when you change them around like that.
Slam dunk on the first two! The last one though had more personality as the original - you might have simplified it a bit to much (the girl went from looking real cool and adult to a bit silly and childish).
I actually don’t mind most of your changes to the Troop Illustration but I think the cat-eye glasses are too iconic of a feature to completely pass up! It wouldn’t have made it that much more complicated imo.
Man I know some people didn't like the new Green Eggs and Ram, but I loved it. Would look great on an enamel pin or embroidered on a polo shirt for a uniform or something.
That last one was so good, made my draw drop when you showed all the color options. Only thing I'd suggest is tweaking the sunglasses a bit to get that "cat eye" shape back. I think that was important to the vibe.
I really liked the result on the second one, but as soon as I red the name, I immediately thought about a sunnyside up egg with a circuit board texture, and RAM sticks as bacon strips
For the first one, I do think you improved the visuals of the logo, but I think it was a bad idea to edit the text in Photoshop and then image trace it because it creates unnecessary anchor points and adds imperfections. It would have been better to do it in Illustrator from start to finish by creating outlines and deleting the paths that make up the white space. Also, distorting the letterforms the way you did creates inconsistencies in the weight. Rather than stretching the letters, the lines themselves should have been individually extended where needed. And although it's commonly done, putting the slogan in two halves at the top and bottom of the logo where there would not normally be a separation makes it read disjointed.
@@wiggard I'm talking more about making sure everything's intentional. When designing something like a logo, even intentional imperfections need to be added methodically. What's relevant is that, in this video, he wasn't attempting to add imperfections of any kind to the font. He just wanted to remove the negative space within it, so any extra anchor points incurred aren't really welcome. U.S. copyright allows for the use of any font as outlines (not a text object), so I'd say trust the original type designer when it comes to fonts.
I highly, HIGHLY recommend that any graphic designer, especially for logos, does a year in multiple industries that rely on graphic design and how your design will work in real life applications. This would be screen printing, vehicle wraps, embroidery, paper products, etc. This will teach you so much about designing, especially for applications where each color has a cost. The first logo was nice, but say the client wants to use that as an embroidered logo on a polo shirt. There are multiple gradients, colors, highlights and shadows, etc that would be a large charge per color, with more for gradients, if your embroiderer can do it, and would cost your client way too much money to use the logo that you designed. If the client is going to use this for stickers, vehicle wraps, paper products, then that would work well, but screen printing and embroidery, for example again, would be impossible for a small business to purchase. Definitely was a fan of the troop design, both of them!
Hope you guys enjoyed this one! A big thanks to everyone who submitted a design, and if you'd like to submit your work for the next video, send me an email at bscritiques@gmail.com.

The Troop Detroit redesign

I like all the originals but not the green eggs and ram
I like the og troop logo, I think making the glasses solid black but keeping the cat eye shape on the new one would’ve helped maintain the sass
Also making the mouth straight horizontal instead of giving it slight angle
I disagree, the original is a little too empty colour-wise, and the overall shape legibility would be lost at a distance.
@@jackmackenzie6721 i thought the third lacks the badass/femme fatale vibe the first one has. Mainly because of the mouth and glasses

Your tweaks made total sense and finally put into words what felt kind of “off” about it.
Super happy you liked it, Halee! You did a great job on the first version, which made this redesign a breeze :)
I liked the glasses u had on the illustration. Think it gave it a good feminine personality.
A new episode! Dude you’re going to be huge if you Keep at it! Wishing you all the best
Thanks my man! Really appreciate the support, and I'm definitely going to push on
Love your work bro! But I will say, the moment I saw the original Girl Scout bakery logo I was going “don’t change it it’s perfect!”
Agreed. I love the original Troop logo and would totally wear it on a t-shirt or something.
16:40 wow... the filling made all the visual difference, you really balanced its weight.
More UI design, please!
PS: Banook & Timbers was my favourite.
You got it, Leon! Will certainly be making more UI stuff
Your voice is pleasant to listen to. So friendly and chipper. I love learning from this channel. I’m a designer and it’s so useful seeing videos.
Great work on these Brandon. Always good to see how someone else would tackle a redesign.
Thanks a bunch, Mike! I love seeing how other designers work as well. Definitely helps me think differently and grow
Okay just one opinion, again I love the video, thank you
Second logo is great. I felt a kind of nostalgia for the style of the original, the Cooper font, spelling out the word "and", and your version is very different and does not bring forth nostalgia, but it is still better than the original, and I love how you humanized it, that made all the difference
This is such a great critique! Also, love the Logo Lab reference!
Thanks, Lindsey! When we first made Logo Lab, we were hoping people would get some good use out of it, and it seems like many have :)
I like how these aren’t “fixing” designs, but specifically just taking a different approach
Troop transformation was very helpful. Taking off the outlines really did it
I’m surprised a lot of people are preferring the original troop logo, I think your redesign is a big improvement and feels much more established
ikr he snapped on it 💯‼️ he needs his props. the redesign is way better
@@WhiteStripesStripiestFan Banook and Timbers was ice cream, TROOP is *cookie*
For the first one, one thing that kinda bugs me is that you didn't add the Bear and the Beaver, I mean, there was a story behind it, and now there isn't.
Yes me to
I like Green Eggs & RAM, because it shows that you adapt to the customer.
It would look odd in a portfolio, but in video form where you explain your process, it is awesome.
I'm so glad I found this channel. Love the music and your character. These videos are so enjoyable!
Glad you enjoy it, Chandima! Appreciate the support 👍
Your very talented at making little things stuck in a box
you are so wholesome and relaxing to watch.
I think the troop logo looks like a fashion store now. You should've pointed out that it is a bakery
the "Green Eggs and RAM" could be called "GEAR". it fits with the tech that the company is based on, and would look good on an app display/icon.
i'm shocked i'm just now finding out about your channel! most def binge watching all the videos you have so far. i really enjoy this video bc i struggle with logo designing, & to hear + see your process is so helpful. thank you for taking the time to make & edit these videos for us, i highly appreciate it! (:
All of your designs are better than their originals. It’s awesome.
banook and timbers would be my comfort ice-cream if they have mint chocolate
I didn't realize how cool logo design is until I found this guy and the one who redesigns people's business adverts for free. But it is like magic, it's so cool !
I like your website, Logo Lab, will surely be using it. 1st & 2nd logos were really challenging and I love what you did.
My favorite was Green Eggs & RAM.
More UI design Please.
Thanks a lot, Bajirao! Appreciate you watching :) More UI will be coming in the future!
This has quickly become my favorite design channel. Hankering for more content.
I think the Green Eggs and RAM logo needs a longer version too - if the name is on the storefront, it'll probably be on a squat, wide panel. Obviously that would be as simple as putting the text in a line and putting a textless version of the egg next to it.
Girl scout cookies for adults? It's already been done. They're called "Girl scout cookies"
the original green eggs and ram logo has such an old flash vibe, i love it
The egg logo definitely needed an outline or a shadow for the text lol
I think a clever idea for the Green Eggs and RAM logo wouldve been the fried egg image + some representation of RAM sticks mimicking eggs and bacon
The 3rd one is something that I don't enjoy about designing logos. The original logo was beautiful but your rework was a better logo because of the clarity and simplicity. It just feels like a shame to lose the original illustration which was so nice.
I liked the original Troop logo more. Can’t quite put it into words but I just like it much better.
the abbreviation for Green Eggs and RAM is GEAR. I feel like something cute could've been done with that! love the redesigns though
You are a master! Great content and would be interested in taking a class from you. Your work is greatly appreciated!
"Banook & Timbers" is my favorite
Now I wanna see what the flavor designs for the icecream one would look like, with cute bear and beaver as mascots
Awesome video! Would love to see more videos like this. Great job on the Troop Detroit and Banook & Timbers designs.
Thanks a lot! Those were my favorite as well :)
You are actually amazing! I love watching your videos, you are so kind in the way you deliver critique, I respect you so much!
You inspire me to create more! Amazing video. I picked up a lot of useful techniques. Keep up the awesome work!
Super great to hear that, Raven! Get out there and make something awesome :)
I clicked on this solely because Green Eggs and Ram is a local biz (the funny thing is they still use their old logo on like 90% of everything. Yours is better.)
I prefer the original on the last one but you also did it really well
This is great designing overall, great job. One thing I would change in the last one is to make the letters a bit taller and maybe elongate the T and P downwards to make it more rustic/vintage just to give a more girl scout-ish vibe. That's just me though
I personally prefer for the green egg logo the way it was written before. Maybe a picture above it would have been better and reusing the letter work.
i think you could add a sata plug to the bottom of the egg
I know this video is years old but I'd love to see the poll. I think you improved everything but the Troop logo.
For the Troop logo, in the color changing part at the end, I think it would be better to add a white outline and keep the face with the intended color palette, because they don't look very good when you change them around like that.
Logo lab is genius!! Definitely gonna try it soon. Fantastic job as usual!
You massively improved them all!
Fantastic! Just find this video randomly and now this is the best channel of design for me, thank you!
Man I know some people didn't like the new Green Eggs and Ram, but I loved it. Would look great on an enamel pin or embroidered on a polo shirt for a uniform or something.
tbh would've preferred if you only changed the text on the last one. liked the original illustration a lot more
you made a perfect job, you took the 3 designs and launched themm
For the TROOP logo his design theory was all good but in practice tracing , changing colours and shapes he turned a cute blonde into a dude lmao 🤣
Why is he so good
Came here from Reddit. You rock dude, I love your work!
Thanks for coming over to check it out! Happy you liked it
That last one was so good, made my draw drop when you showed all the color options. Only thing I'd suggest is tweaking the sunglasses a bit to get that "cat eye" shape back. I think that was important to the vibe.
Notification squad! This is great, I'm excited for more of this series!
That's right!!! Will definitely be making more of these :)
the troop logo was already great.
This really helps me think through the design process. Thank you.
I really liked the result on the second one, but as soon as I red the name, I immediately thought about a sunnyside up egg with a circuit board texture, and RAM sticks as bacon strips
i think the troop logo would’ve been good with the cat eye glasses, adding in the companies personality
Hopefully, they get to use these redesigns. The Green Egg and Ham guys need that new logo.
Just use the smooth tool AND it literally removes alot of unnecesary anchor points???
Not every logo needs to be perfect, some need to have imperfections to be special and better.
I think you should’ve kept the bear and beaver for Banook and Timbers
I would have used the egg as a mouse for the computer
Banook and Timbers is actually using your design now!
Yep! They purchased the redesign from me 😄
@@BrandonShep Oh nice! Here I was thinking that the guy who made the submission had them as a client and just stole your work, lol.
