    • @UnconventionalReasoning
      @UnconventionalReasoning 2 месяца назад

@@maticritonja9446 With F-mount autofocus lenses, I'm pretty certain Sigma had to reverse engineer the lens side of the AF interface and algorithm, Nikon did not give Sigma the specs. When Sigma introduced the Art/Sport/Contemporary series, they also offered a USB dock so the firmware in the lens could be upgraded. The first of these lenses was released in Spring 2012, around the same time as the Nikon D800. With subsequent cameras, like the D850, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art lens probably got a firmware upgrade to with with the AF in the D850. They probably did not put in the same effort to work with the F5, which had been discontinued in 2004.
Nikon, on the other hand, knows the interface for each of their cameras, so all the G-type lenses will work with the F5. For their last few F-mount lenses, Nikon switched from G-type to E-type, and unfortunately those will not work with the F5. These include the Nikon 700-200mm f/2.8E FL, 105mm f/1.4E, 28mm f/1.4E, and 500mm f/5.6E PF, some spectacular lenses.

Got mine F5 last week. Love it. It focuses faster with 24-70 mm f/2.8G, 28-70 mm f/3.5-4.5 and 300 mm f/2.8G than my D750 and D810. For a person that likes film, F5 is a real bargain these days. I've bought mine in pristine condition for just $320. People don't like F5 for its size and weight, but it's a great camera. Believe or not, it's built better than a D4.

    3D-Color-Matrix-Metering:
3D: Since the F90 (I still have one), the lens transfers the distance into the processor and this is taken into account for the exposure (very important for the flash).
Color: For the first time, the light measurement in the camera was done for the different colors separately. The brightness of a blue sky is different from the brightness of green grass or skin color.
Matrix: Is what all newer cameras are doing. Instead of 5, 8 or 16 areas, the F5 had 1000 to build the matrix. The brightness of different parts in the picture are weighted differently. A bright sky, a dark foreground, the main subject in the center and the color is used to get the perfect exposure for landscapes, portraits, rooms with windows, sunset, night and so on.

    • @1911geek
      @1911geek 2 года назад

All go out the window when you shoot TTL or automatic flash at night over exposed by +2 a common issues. Try manual flash 1/4 power 20 feet F5.6 ASA film

The second best metering system ever put in a camera but still on par with the F6. The color temperature metering nails exposure perfectly and produces the best exposed transparencies regardless of scene brightness. In fact I use my F5 as an exposure meter when I am shooting with my large format cameras ( 4x5 and 8x10 ) outdoors.

I would sell my soul to be able to go back and time and get one of these babies brand new out of the box, but I was able to find one that that has *knock on wood* not had any real issues to date. Either way, I hope that one day, you decide to give the F5 another chance, because it truly is a fantastic camera worthy of every bit of praise it's ever gotten! I get the hub-bub about it being heavy, though. My gym membership really comes in handy for that, but I definitely see how the weight may be a turn off for some! Either way, love your stuff, Jason, and hope you're having a good new year so far!

It truly is a brick. I could never afford one until about 3 years ago when I managed to get one for about $250 from Japan. It's pristine, as is the manual which is completely in Japanese. The AF is fantastic. I'm sorry that yours was not functioning.

Well after 6 months of owning my Nikon F5 what can I say. I had only had only run 1 film through the F5 up until last Saturday.
I was the main photographer for my nephew’s wedding and I was extremely impressed with the F5’s performance and the camera’s ability to focus and lock on the subjects wth comparative ease. I think that the F5 is quicker than my D300 in focusing.

Great review. I love my F5-it’s what I shoot when I absolutely positively have to get the picture.
That said, I prefer my F4 because of its analog controls and ability to work with pretty much all Nikon glass (the F5 can’t mount pre-AI glass w/o modification to the lens mounts). And its focus motor is so powerful when you have a large 2.8 pro zoom mounted, it will torque steer the camera as it focuses. lol

Taylor: I have an MB20 but prefer the 21 because it provides a deeper grip. The F4 is so heavy and long and slippery it gets tiring holding it (unlike the F5 which is also heavy but better proportioned). I’m going to have to try cutting and glueing gun grip tape like a lot of F4 shooters do...
But it’s nice having both grips to choose from.

I currently own a "brick" as well as an F4 and an F6 and it was a marvelous piece of machinery in its day though to some not worth the extra weight over the F4. Back in the early days of digital , a lot of us kept shooting film noticing the steady disappearance of film processing vendors until there were very few. So , we finally got on the digital bandwagon and well , here we are , full digital but still hanging on to the relics of the film age over nostalgia, and the fact that we still admire a fine piece of machinery.

I love this camera. The only downside relies on the fact the focus brackets lights up in dark black, like a bold text font, which makes them extremely hard to be seen in low light, despite the focus area indicators. Nonetheless, it's super reliable, weather sealed, highly accurate meter, can shoot flash at 1/300th in high-speed sync mode (set in custom function no. 20). It also allows you to change viewfinders and focusing screens. A truly terrific camera.

I love my F5! I had the same issue with the shutter speed and aperture dials, the easiest fix is to spray lighter fluid into where the dials are and rotate them for a couple of minutes each. Helps with the oxidization of the solder points. Worked fine for my F5 and an older DSLR I have, no issues since! I can't comment on your autofocus issue though, as mine works perfectly and focuses faster than any of my modern digital gear.

Came here looking for this comment, the sigma is also not really a G lens, it's just a nikkor branding.

It's so similar to my D3/S/X bodies that even I could work out how to use it (I don't delve too deep into the D3 series menus either.) Actually - I shot with an F100 for a while back in the early 2000's and I absolutely loved it. 😃

I had an F5 for many years. Awesome piece of kit. Suggest you get another, correctly functioning model, as aside from the heft, it's the perfect 35mm film camera, IMO.

I have 2 F5 bodies (1 b&w, 1 color) when I go shooting. I bought all, except my 200-500, lenses (D and G series) for these bodies. When I went to digital all my lenses worked on my D810.
    Nice video!

Very reliable piece of kit - also for building your biceps. The matrix meter is extremely good for slide film, and way better than the older Nikons. My only gripe is that, unlike in the F100, the selected autofocus point doesn't light up.

I just bought this camera and I can't stop shooting it. When I'm not shooting on it I just cradle it on my lap while I sit at my desk. It just has an "it" factor. And it doesn't just take all my modern lenses that were born long after it, but it usually autofocuses them faster than my D850. Speaking of the 850, I'm pair-bonded with that camera and so when I picked up this absolute prototype to the modern DSLR, it was a seamless transition. Everything is right where I expect it to be. Took me literally 5-10 minutes of examining the functions and I was off to the races.

Using a Minolta Maxxum 7. Modern functionalities on these SLRs make it a lot easier to get good shots using color reversal films.
Using a Sigma 50 1.4 EX HSM lens on it won't make the whole kit bulky and heavy to hold. The guy who sold me the Sigma lens took a Zeiss 135 1.8 lens with him (which I couldn't afford) and tried it on my Maxxum 7. The whole set just gets ridiculously heavy.
Love seeing your videos, love from China.

I bought an F3 several years ago on Ebay for £190. It had been described as "in good condition", but I had to leave feedback saying it was misdescribed - in reality it was mint! Built like a tank and I always describe it as a digital camera that just happens to use film.

    Another great review.
I’ve recently been using my canon eos 3 which is a bit futuristic with its eye-controlled focus. But unlike the Nikon, the eos 3 is like someone slamming the door in my face every time I press the shutter. It can be heard a mile away 😆

Great video Jason and you did take some great photos. I was looking at getting a F4S but after watching a number of videos on the F5, I have decided that the F5 is the bees knees go to camera to work alongside my Nikon D300, and my Nikon F60D Panorama that is a great little easy camera to use. I have got a Nikon F80 but it has a broken film door latch so I do not use it.
I am still looking for a replacement film door for it
Jason on your autofocusing issue it might be the third party Sigma lens you are using, try using a Nikon Brand lens and see if the issue persists......just an idea!

Great upload once again.. I have to call you on that G-mount though...
Nikon, up until recently, have only one lens mount: F-mount.
"G-mount" lenses you mentioned are the gelded, no-aperture-ring lenses

I think your command dial issue may most likely be water/moisture exposure and it happens on all Nikon cameras with command dials post-F4 (even digital). The contacts corrode and will sometimes skip or register the wrong spin direction. A bit of patience, a screwdriver, and a spray of contact cleaner will do the trick. I've had this happen on my F80 and D700.

Nice review. Love the 8fps function. I have a Canon EOS1N with 6fps, great for when you just have too many rolls and need to spend all your money in as few seconds as possible.
Have you checked out the F100 in comparison to the F5?

Glad to see photographers who don't automatically flock to something like an AE1, FE, FM etc - the final era film cameras are fun, and photographers who come from digital should be at home, and you get a lot of camera for the money, and your lenses can work on both, seamlessly
I guess most people shooting film want that "old school" dials and levers type of camera
