      @@seafire820 The Canon EOS 1V is another amazing film camera, but yes, Canon's styling leaves a lot to be desired compared to Nikon's. The EOS SLRs and the 1D series are plain ugly. But despite that, to be honest and even though I'm a Nikon person, I do like my 1V more than my F5.

    I've been shooting mine pretty much everyday on movie sets in the last year. I took it a bit for granted for a long moment and last week I lent it to a friend for a 3 days shoot. Now that it's back, I feel emotional seeing the camera that brought me so much fun and recognition in the last year. This camera is built to last forever, I don't even think it's too heavy! I'm so used to it that it feels like the extension of my arm! It's fast, it's simple, it's totally reliable, after over a 100 rolls shot on it I never had any problem of any sort, the light meter is excellent, it goes up to 1/8000 of a second, 8 fps, it has a super good auto-focus with only 5 optional points (I think it's a plus!), auto-rewinds, advances film by itself. I only have a 50mm 1.4G that I always leave on it so I'm not over thinking about which lens to use (I gotta admit I'm more and more tempted to buy a 35mm). I think that the Autofocus and the Aperture Priority mode are making me more consistent then most film shooters. I can't recommend this camera enough! I don't really know if it's the best film camera ever made, but I know it may be the best buy I did in my whole life so far! I love it!

  • @drunacres

    That absolutely is the original price tag. JPY325,000 is almost exactly US$3,000 at today's exchange rates, but was closer to US$4,000 at the time. In 1998 that would have been quite a lot of money. I live in Japan and can attest the quality of used cameras here - hence I have a real camera fetish, which includes two each of F3, F4, F5 and F6 - all mint.

    Canon cameras have a smarter roll loading system that works backwards: when you load a fresh roll of film, the camera unwinds all the film first and as you shoot it retracts the film back into the case. That way if you accidentally open the camera mid way you don't lose your shots as the exposed part of the film is already inside.

    • @DarrylCarey

      Canon's are far less complicated to rewind as auto and open and can on some select if leader left out or not. Ta for Japan tip found an L lens listed as mint.

    • @dungareesareforfools
      @dungareesareforfools 5 лет назад +1

      I think it was just some older EOS models that did that, the recent (and ultimate) EOS 1V certainly doesn't. Also, latter Nikons and Minoltas too allow you to choose whether the film leader is wound back in on rewind, the F6 certainly does.

    • @robbiemer8178
      @robbiemer8178 5 лет назад +3

      That "pre-wind" system was not on Canon's pro cameras, just on the consumer grade cameras. I guess Canon decided that a pro might need to reload as quickly as possible to get the next shot and wouldn't be too likely to open the camera while it had film in it. But the amateur might well make that mistake or even forget that the camera was loaded. I remember some of my older relatives would only shoot one roll of film a year: a shot of the kid on their birthday, a shot of mom and dad on their anniversary, maybe one or two shots at Thanksgiving and again at Xmas.

    I had two F5's and an F100 as backup. The F5's by far were the best 35mm cameras I ever used. They were about $2000 as I recall. The tech geek would love these because of all the neat add ons. The D1 came out at $5000, so the F5 suddenly was low cost compared to the professional digital cameras. Funny thing is that it's hard to give away a D1 today, but the F5 will always be worth something.

    This was so cool. I still have an F5 as well as a late-production F3HP (purposely bought it when I found out Nikon discontinued it). Those bodies are relatively unused, unfortunately, but I used the heck out of their predecessors back in the day. I also had the F4S (a US version that included the battery grip). This really brought back fond memories! It’s also a good reminder of the fact that, despite all the fantastic progress with computerized cameras and digital capture, the basics were already well set out in the old Nikon, Canon, and other film gear. (I love the fact that the F3/F3HP lasted for decades). In addition to the swappable viewfinder, I believe there are also alternative focus screens for the F5.

    Fell in love with the Nikon F5 the first time I saw it, but ended up buying a Minolta Maxxum 7 a few years later. I know it sounds crazy, but the Maxxum 7 made me love photography even more. Features such as looking through the viewfinder to focus, a large LCD display panel on the back showed camera settings and more, if I didn’t finish shooting the roll of 200 speed film that day, I could remove it and put in 800 speed film and take some night shots; then put the 200 speed film back into the camera the next day and shoot the rest of the roll, I loved that all the camera functions were on the body and not buried under menus. Finally, built-in wireless flash made off camera flash photography a breeze. I still use it today alongside my Sony A7 RII.

    Great review. I also have an F5 in similar condition that I managed to pick up from here in the UK earlier this year. It’s an absolute beast with more modes than I would ever wish for. I shoot mine in manual mode most of the time. Nikon absolutely knew they were onto another winner with this when released. I would never consider an F6 as it’s just a souped up F100 and is way overpriced for what it is. Just need to get a good F2AS in my life now.

    What a brilliant find. A true time-capsule. Now that you've had a bit of time with it, I wonder which you like better... the unobtrusive focus indicators of the F5 or the red indicators of the F100? I owned two F100s, purchased in 2000 for $995 USD each. They were a back up to my original Nikon D1 (which was shite, but an amazing value at the time for $5K) and used to shoot B&W.

  • @user-kp4cz4xt8v

    Darryl, I have another great alternative which saves you much much more money. The F80 also takes G series lenses and does matrix metering. But the top shutter speed only goes to 1/4000 and it doesn’t have the ai index coupling which means you can’t meter with the old ai and aid lenses. Otherwise it’s does the same job and also much lighter weight.

    • @geoffreymendelson
      @geoffreymendelson 5 лет назад

      The better alternative if you are looking for cheap is an F75/N75. It also lacks the AI coupling, but it works fine with AF, AFD, and AFS lenses with or without VR. I got one one eBay for -$20. A charity that takes donations and resells them had an N75 with a Tamron 28-200 (rated better than the Nikon) AFD type lens, for the same price with shipping as the Japanese dealers sell the lens without.
      The combination was supposed to be tested and did come with a money back guarantee, when I got it, there was a roll of film in it, and two lithium batteries with a 10 year life time that were expired. But everything works flawlessly. :-)

    Well I finally got myself a mint Nikon F5 from Japan Darryl with box, manual and the white F5 body cap.
    I have been looking for over 4 months sorting out F5’s that had missing caps and viewfinder rings that were missing on some.
    It was sent from Japan last Tuesday 26th January and I received it Friday 29th January.
    On unboxing the F5, I was surprised as to how well they packed it. The F5 looks as new as my hardly used D300 that is nearly 11 years old with under 1700 shutter count. I have had a bit of a play around over the weekend using the two lenses I can use.
    I have a brand new Nikon AF-S 85mm 1.8G and a Tamron AF Aspherical 28-200mm f3.8-5.6 LD Lenses. I also tried using my Nikon SB-5000 Speedlight and my old Nikon SB-600 Speedlight that function perfectly.
    I have a rubber Eyecup in the post coming to me that will go on the viewfinder to aid me as I wear glasses.
    The first film that I have put in is is a roll of Fujicolour Superia X-Tra 400. I have bumped the ISO up to 800 just to see what the results are with the F5.
    I am very happy with my F5 overall so thanks Darryl for your video mate.

      @@DarrylCarey Sorry it has taken so long to reply. I used my Nikon F5 and my D300 at my Stepdaughter's Wedding last month (September 2021) and we are all wrapped with the photos. The only issue was the price on getting 3 x 36 exp and 1 x 24 exp films developed. It cost a small fortune mate and took the camera shop 2 weeks as they sent it north to their Sunshine Coast store. I used Kodak Portra 400 Pro in the 36 exp and just a normal Kodak 400 in the 24 exp. I used the F5 a number of months back for my nephew's wedding as well.
      The F5 was probably a little bit quicker in focusing on the subjects than the D300.
      I have now got myself a couple of new prime lenses and they are: Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8G and the Nikon AF-S 85mm f1.8G and these were the main lenses that I used at the Stepdaughter's Wedding.
      I am looking at upgrading from my D300 to either a Nikon D6 or the Nikon D850, and I still only want to shot photo mostly.....What are your thoughts on this Darryl?
