What It's Like To Be A Registered Nurse In NYC

- Veronica Pasha, 25, is a registered nurse in the women and children's health division at NewYork-Presbyterian. Here's a closer look at a typical day on the job.
» Subscribe to CNBC Make It.: cnb.cx/2kxl2rf
Veronica Pasha’s work day starts early: She’s up at 5 a.m. and leaves her apartment in Queens shortly after 6 a.m. That gives her enough time to make a 6:15 a.m. bus, which gets her to the subway station at 6:22 a.m.
By 7 a.m., she’s at NewYork-Presbyterian, where she’s been working as a registered nurse since 2015. It’s her first job. After graduating with a degree in nursing from Hunter College in 2015, Pasha was hired as a staff nurse in the women and children’s health division. Last fall, she was promoted to senior staff nurse.
The 25-year-old New York native is a float nurse, which means she works across all units of her division. She’s also one of the sexual assault forensic examiners in the ER, which means that “three shifts a month, I’m on call to come in for sexual assault and domestic violence victims that come in through the emergency room,” she says.
CNBC Make It stopped by the hospital to meet Pasha and get a feel for what it’s really like to be a registered nurse.
The hours
Pasha works 13 shifts a month, or about three to four per week. Each shift is 12.5 hours - 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. - “but sometimes you get stuck here if you have charting to do,” she adds. “Or, if the unit is short, we’ll offer to stay later. The maximum we could work [in one day] is 16 hours.”
There’s also a weekend requirement: Three of her 13 monthly shifts have to be on a Saturday or Sunday.
The nurses at NewYork-Presbyterian set their own schedules about 45 days in advance, “so in terms of life planning and things like that, you have to really plan ahead,” says Pasha.
The longer you’ve been at the hospital, the more say you have when it comes to your schedule, she says: “For staff nurses on the floor, seniority is definitely the biggest thing. You get your first pick of vacations and when you want your holidays and when you want to be off. When you’re new, you just kind of get whatever is left at the end.”
The shift
Pasha arrives at the hospital between 7 and 7:15 a.m. to change into her scrubs and pick a patient for the day. “If I want to be an OR nurse today, I’ll sign up for the OR. If I want to be in the recovery room, I’ll go there,” she says.
After clocking in at 7:30 a.m., “we do our change of shift sign-out,” says Pasha, which is when the residents, attendings, members of the anesthesia team and nurses meet to review the status of each patient. “We go over every patient that’s on the board that morning. We go through what part of the labor they’re in, what part of the postpartum phase that they’re in, if they’re recovering, if they’re a labor patient and going to the OR.”
Then, she checks in with her patients that day - she could have anywhere from one to five - and creates a plan with them.
Depending on the day, she might have time to take a lunch break or catch up with colleagues, she says, though, “other days are just so busy you don’t have time to sit down for two seconds.” Pasha, who meal preps and packs all of her food for the day, says that the goal is to eat all three meals at the hospital, but “on a busy day, I’ll come with all my food and leave with all my food.”
On those days, “you throw a grape in your mouth and you run back to your to your patient.”
It’s not until her shift is over when the fatigue hits her: “As soon as I sit on the subway to go back home, I’m like, ‘Wow, I’m tired.’” As exhausting as the days can be, “you have to really keep a strong face on, especially for a mom that’s laboring. Because when she’s tired, you need to be the energizer. ... By the time I get home, I shower and I’m in bed very, very quickly.”

A day in the life of a 25-year-old registered nurse who works 12.5-hour shifts at New York-Presbyterian | CNBC Make It.
I’m a registered nurse in Florida. It truly is an amazing career but extremely demanding both mentally and physically. I just finished a two year contract and now applying to the ICU!

Nurses know a lot more than the general population believes.
kiss Sanand you mean they aren’t glorified waitresses?
Yet they do practically all the work of a Doctor for half the pay.
Theoneandonly88able Yes, doctors are now only consulting, reviewing labs, and writing the orders. Nurses are executing all of it.
kiss Sanand nursing is more hard labor and the salary of a doctor is more because of the cost of education that it takes to become one.

I've been an RN for almost 5 years and at times I wonder if I made the right choice. There have been more downs than ups. At times I feel I'm at the whim of the shareholders and administrators of the hospital who are more concerned with profit than patient care. And some patients dont want to be helped. But reading the comments showing appreciation for the work I do I am remembered why I got into the medical field. Thank you RUclips community 🙏
I feel you as I think the same way. - ICU RN
Make a nursing box! It has helped me remember my "whys" :)
I feel the same way and I've been a nurse only 3 days.
@@Mech537 i feel u..when i first got my job as an RN. i was like..did i pick the right career? lol
Worked as an RN for 40 years. The best.part was when I retired 4 years ago. Good luck, it will not get any better. Presently living a very relaxed life.!!
Went to school with her. She's always had a big heart and good work ethic. Glad to see her thriving and making a difference!
Kudos to her 25 y.o BSN and striving for extra education ❤️😊 I’m currently a nursing student 31 y.o and seeing this video makes me push harder because it tells me a lot about what a nurse can offer and gain 🙌🏽 congrats and keep it up u have a nursing team out here cheering for you and one another ☝🏾✍🏽
it doesn't matter who arrived earlier....it matters who travelled further..31 is still young, continue and go for DNP...i have colleagues who became nurses at the age of 23 worked for 30 years, still with an associate/bachelors degree. key is to CONTINUE to PUSH HARDER and you'll be ahead.
It's definitely not easy to be a nurse and that's something that the nursing school doesn't teach us about. But definitely rewarding and with such a stable job, not only you can make good money but you can work anywhere in the world. Plus the varieties of job that nursing can offer is massive.
- ICU nurse in NYC
Adventures with mel So cool! Can you really work anywhere in the world?
@@amandaj3742 yes ofcourse! but ofcourse money wise...its still better to make money as a nurse in the US or Canada. But otherwise you sure can definitely work anywhere in the world and such a stable job. If you want to be a registered nurse or want to switch careers, try doing an internship or volunteering to see whether it is for you.
Adventures with mel that’s awesome! Definitely going to consider nursing as a career now...do you know of any medical opportunities abroad?
But if you’re in nursing school, you already know that nursing is not going to be easy.
@@hyosomoo1437 I don't know exactly what you mean not going to be easy. Yes, it's not going to be easy because you have to do clinical work and study a lot BUT nursing school DOES NOT teach you the reality on how to be a nurse and how you can handle such situations.
I’ve got a few more years to go and then I get to be a RN! I can’t wait to come back to this video in 4-5 years and see how far I’ve come.
Soooo
How are you doing with your nursing education?
As a patient who spent around 1 year and a half in the hospital and most lots of that time in ICU and with just constant procedures without some of the greatest nurses in UCLA Ronald Reagan hospital I don’t think I woulda made it. They were my caregivers, friends, company when I needed, therapist, and the list goes on. But to all nurses thank you for your service to our country!!!
Wish the young queen well! Like to see young people be successful & focus. God bless her! 🙏🏾
I love it when CUNY grads come out and develop a rewarding career. I went to City College - Grove School of Engineering. Now I’m an aerospace engineer at a top aerospace company. Oh by the way, without thousands of debt to student loans. #ForTheWin
I enjoyed watching this video. Im also a nurse in Nyc. I work my way up the ladder from a home health aide to Lpn to Rn. I also have my Masters and paying that loan back currently. It's a struggle so everything shown in this video is 100% accurate. But i wouldn't change it for anything&I love my career and so does this wonderful caring nurse. Keep inspiring!!! You can see it by how she talks about her patients and life. Keep making videos like this. Thanks!!
Nurses are so under appreciated, under recognized for all they do. They have to be smart to begin with because nursing school is hard, you have to know some pretty difficult subjects, then you have trial by fire on the job and unlike most of the rest of us, it could be life or death. It takes a certain kind of person to become a good nurse.
I've spend a lot of time is hospitals and let me tell you that nurses are the real MVPs
As a nursing student who wants to work in L&D I found this video to be wonderful! Good for her! Thanks for sharing
I'm an OR nurse for 4.5 years and I'm LOVING IT. Long hours and work drains your body, but it's worth it.

It’s draining job! You have to have a certain personality for medical 🏥 field! God bless!

Here’s the thing, if you work healthcare, you usually arrive 20-30 min before clicking in and start working. I literally arrive 30 min start looking at my Pts charts and clock in to get report. Get paid for 12 hrs but work 12.5

In the Philippines, the basic salary of nurses is around 300 USD/month (not including tax). It can even go as low as 130 USD/mo.

Can you do a video about medical laboratory scientist/medtechs???. I find that its always the nurses and the doctors that seems to be appreciated....but what about this medical proffesions like physical therapist,radiologists..pharmacist..etc working behind the scenes?????
Im taking bachelors in medical laboratory sciences as my premed and i hope you'll make a video about that so people can be educate what we do in the health field.

I LOVE NURSES

Just remember, nurses generally don’t retire with well funded retirement packages. Be prepared to retire, after 30-40 years, with limited income.
That’s why you get a side hustle
Please do one on a physical therapist
In our country, our nurse are paid so horribly. I wish goverment put a logic standard for their wage and reward them as they deserved. Nurse is a noble job for society
Do a speech pathologist!
Can’t wait until I’m a nurse.
You have my dream job. Hopefully i can be a rn in a few years.
Why did you leave Little Mix?
How hard was it learning the subway? Because that’s confusing me in NY. Took a while to get to work?
I will be a registered nurse when I am around 28 years old but I am already working in the medical field as a nurse assistant. I sort of feel interested in pediatrics ICUbut I like Cardiac icu. I would be a clinical specialist so when I am older, I can teach the younger generation as an educator.
Nowadays nursing is far better than MBA 😀. I myself start a business after 10 years of job rejections.
I worked at that hospital 🏥 RN BSN case manager/ on-site for a large health insurance company.

I'm sorry you couldn't pay me enough to spend that much of your time and life at work
I'm a doctor of dermatology...
Did she have to go get her Master's degree? Considering how expensive it is, I wouldn't do it. You're higher earnings would go to paying tuition payments.
vze21gwa not at all, especially in nursing. The more education the better in the medical field, because its growing incredibly competitive. Rns are pushed out for BSNs and not masters are required for upper management jobs. It’s worth it and it gets paid for by your job or by working in a poor hospital (government funding)
Average np salary is around 200k and that is totally worth it
Why do you need a masters? in nursing . Is her pay going to jump up into 100ks with masters to make up for the student loan payments.
I wanna know too
Since the average rn income is about 85k in nyc I would think should would be making around 125-150k with the masters. I'm a rn who also lives in nyc I make around 130ish but I also do work alot of hours. Plus i'm in the ER.
Has it occurred to you that she might be getting her Masters to pursue other aspects of Nursing? Her pay might not even change, but the kind of work and structure could. People don't always further their education to increase their pay.
Kenny Rawlins it doesn’t really come to mind because furthering your education requires time but most importantly money! Graduate school doesn’t come cheap so most rational people will not further themselves into debt to make the same amount of money.
Well she alluded to a reimbursement program from her employer. It sounds like she is doing it because she is a hard worker and trying to get ahead.
She's gorgeous.
I'm from India I want to become a RN in nyc
How about now? If there’s time, please give us an update.

why can nurses get o/t, take long vacations while salaried employees dont get any o/t
Because their presence is life or death.
@-- you are probably right. however, i have seen many nurses who would comein to work for 8h shift and then stay for another 8h. but during that time, they would just hang out.
