Alvey Reel Kayak Fishing - Using the Drag System... or Not

  • Fishing with the Alvey Sidecast Reel is more fun than fishing with a normal spinning reel since you can release the drag system and control the fish by palming the reel. When fishing without the drag system engaged, every turn of the reel acts on the fish and the pressure you apply to the reel hub is the only way to control and work the fish! It's so much fun!!

    G’day guys I’m a Alvey man only from the last 8-10 years I’m fishing reels from 1959 and they don’t miss a beat also here in Australia if fix and save the ones people throw out yes there are people throwing them out😳
    The ones I love are the 1955-59 2inch reels I use them on a rods 12-15 foot fly rods with super light line ( 1-2kg ) and fish for king George whiting and bream everything feel massive and it’s a great fight on light line, I’m going to hand down my reels and gear to my kids wouldn’t be surprised if my grandkids will use them to lol
    Alveys fishing is awesome fun keep using 👍🏻👍🏻🤘🏻

      You’ll be happy to hear Alvey looks like they will be staying open for while yet what I’ve hear around traps
      But the problem is they make samething that does not break or really wear out so that’s their mayor problem lol

      Exactly! I am going to buy another reel this spring to have a backup!

  • @mckmh07167
    @mckmh07167 6 лет назад

    That looks awesome. Definitely going to have to try that when I get down to Florida. It looks like a lot of fun and seems to increase the work you have to manually as opposed to the reel doing the work for you.

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  6 лет назад

      That is exactly why it is more fun. You have to think more about what you are doing. Since it is direct drive without the drag, you have to be careful not to wind the reel when the fish is running. Makes me go back to the basics of only reeling when the fish is stopped or charging the boat.

    I love Alvey Reels and yes, the palming method is preferred by the hard core users as they say it gives them the most control (off the beach). You will appreciate the Alvey even more in years to come as the technique becomes second nature and your spinning reels seize up. That Alvey will still be as good as new in 50 years. Its not uncommon for generations to use the same reel.
    On a side note the Factory is now winding down due to high local electricity prices and the fact that the reels last forever. It may close or be sold to the Chinese. Now's the time to buy these reels as they may not be around much longer.

      So sad to see them go out of business. I note they are in a final push now. I'll get my next Alvey video out on casting from a kayak to spur interest before they close up.

    Palming all the way,also the reel that is the ultimate is the Alvey 55 be1, you have to get one and check it out to understand how it works. Also with the open runner I close it up a tad with multi grips gently and the line doesnt come out as easy.Cheers and love your vids!

    Check out the old Alvey videos on You Tube. I am Australian and some of my Alveys are 60 years old. In the surf they are king. The first think I do is dunk them in the saltwater. It wets the line and you cast even better. They are so durable the company nearly closed. For the enthusiast the early timber models are magnificent.

    Alvey reels are awesome fishing tools once you learn how to use them. Swivels are needed to combat line twist but Alveys are as rock solid as they come.

    Steve, sorry for the length of question.
    I looked at Alvey reels and rods for surf fishing years ago, but never followed through. One of the things I noted was that Alvey surf rods to pare with the reels had a very short butt (I think that's the preferred rod over there). Is the rod your using an Alvey rod? In the video it looks like a standard spin rod - If it is an Alvey, is the butt shorter than say an Ugly Stick? Thanks!

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  6 лет назад

      I looked at my setups. The Alvey surf rod/reel does have a short butt. The reason is you cast it with your left hand on the reel and right hand farther up to get the leverage. The reel seat extends significantly up the rod to allow that. I measured the kayak system and for a 7' ugly stick, the distance from the bottom of the rod to the reel lock up is the same. In fact, I put the Alvey reel on the ugly stick and it would work fine.

  • @pb8582
    @pb8582 8 месяцев назад

    The reel is put the wrong way around tho. Unless you bought a left handed one (which is rare) we normally spool the reel with the right hand in Australia

      Could be. Sadly, I do not have the reel any longer.

    Is that a center pin reel with a drag?

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  6 лет назад

      No, it is a side casting reel. Strange Australian concoction! They sell them in the US now.

    Alvey is closing down and current retail stock is drying up or non existent. They are still working to fulfill back orders made by the devoted fan and angler base on the news the company was shutting down July 2016. If you are becoming more fond of the direct winding and palming control approach then i would suggest a non drag (knuckle duster) model as well...it is a far more raw and engaging method of fishing, Which I myself am more in favor of though there is a place for both drag and non drag applications.

    How well does it cast?

    • @KayakhacksFishing
      @KayakhacksFishing  6 лет назад +1

      It took me a while to get the hang of it. I am doing a video that as well. DO NOT use mono as they recommend. Far too many line twists and does not cast well from kayak position. Once I changed to Monotex (Ardent Gliss), I could get good distance. In my new kayak, I want a high seating position to get even more.

    • @UncannySense
      @UncannySense 6 лет назад +1

      You must have a swivel at start of any terminal rig setup, Due to the nature of a side cast with a direct wind line twist can be an issue. a good maintenance tip is to feed out the casting length of line after a session without a terminal rig either in a current or behind the boat/yak. or at home into a bucket of water and let allow the line to untwist while winding up. As for casting Alvey rods are setup differently with guide spacing. The first strip guide is typically oversized to the rest and start half way up the overall length of the rod. A well balanced rig and methodology can cast distance and respectfully well, casting accuracy is not as controllable as spinning or overhead gear i'd say. But for tackle that can be handed down generations and thrown in the salt and sand i wouldn't use anything else in the surf.

      its an enjoyable feeling getting one of those stripping it down and polishing it up and seeing it shine again metal polish makes the bakelite shine like new it will fit onto a cheap spinner rod but if the eye has been bent you may have to adjust it to get it casting properly also you may need to remove eyes from the rod if the first eye is to low if it is too low you can cast as hard as you like and it wont go far
