In fact the song is dealing with the nostalgic look back to childhood. The singer is thinking back of his own childhood through his daughter. Names of sweets that nowadays have disappeared, talking about the child’s mother, and picking up souvenirs from what he was doing with her daughter that are nonsense. This song, full of slang language, definitely shows the love a father can feel towards his daughter. The piano playing put a powerful emphasis on the whole theme. A past time that will not come back, lost, tragical. It takes to one’s guts and it personally makes me cry… That is the very only, most relevant song from Renaud we should remember. Mistral was a bag with mint powder, and you had a licorice straw. So when you take this, you feel like it is a fresh wind. Mistral is also the name of a wind. Inside or in the back of the bag sometimes was written “Gagnant” (won / winning)and you could have another one for free as a prize.
Yes, a classic song now in France. Thank you ! And now please react to "Miss Maggie" with a bad electric guitar and sarcastic lyrics against machism and Margareth Thatcher, a former British Prime Minister. But you have to get a very good translation. A lot of nice slang words !
Yes so simple song, just a piano, a good singer and good deep lyrics. A great artist doesn't need to be complicated. The best song of him a think is "Morgane de toi". So beautiful.

you're right Dereck, it's an intimate song or a father and daughter are in a park, with birds, and tells her to her daughter her childhood and candy he had in her time when he was a little boy .👍👍😊😊
I think it's exactly what has inspired this piano composition ...a child musical box. When we listen to this piano melody we can't stop to think how we open a musical box and see an opera dancer in a tutu making pointes while turning on herself with the arms also stretched out in point above her head. And this melody played with the so characteristic sound of a musical box.

Hello Dereck, Thank you so much for this new reaction about our national Renaud. Fun fact: Renaud's famous ballad *Mistral Gagnant* was voted “French song of all time”, ahead of *Jacques Brel - Ne me quitte pas* and *Barbara - L'aigle Noir.* (The black eagle) by French people. Another fun fact: In this official video, it's the own daughter of Renaud, you see (Lolita Sechan). Yes, I can wait for Lara's version ...No problem. 😋 (Yes, it's well me asked specially this reaction) That's All, Folks!
Several years ago, Renaud told in interview that, when he composed this song, he told his wife he had made a song about their just born daughter but wasn't sure it would make a great song for the public to hear and he made her listen to it. After the listening, she answer him : if you don't sing it, I leave you. And so he sang and Mistral gagnant was born.
To sit on bench for 5 minutes alongside you, To watch people as they go by, To talk with you of good time that have gone or will comeback holding your hand and feeling your little fingers, Giving food to idiotic pigeons And faking kicks for fun, To listen to laugh that cracks up the walls But really heals my wounds, To tell you how I was as a kid, The wonderful sweets that we stole from the shop, Car-en-Sac and Mints, one franc caramels, and the Mistral Gagnants. (Mistral Gagnants being a type of sweets.)
To walk under the rain 5 minutes alongside you, To watch life as it goes by, To tell you about earth as my eyes devour you, To talk about your mother a little, And jumping in puddles to get her annoyed, Ruining our shoes and laughing, To hear your laugh as the sea's sound, To stop and turn around, Te tell you about past Carambars et the Coco Bohères, The real Roudoudous that cut our lips, And ruined our teeth, And the Mistral Gagnants. (Roudoudous, Carambars and Coco Bohères are all sweets.)
To sit on a bench 5 minutes alongside you, And to watch the sun as it leaves, To talk about the good times that are gone and I don't care, To tell you that the bad guys aren't us, That if I am crazy it is only because of your eyes, And they benefit from being two, To hear your laugh rise up so high, That away the bird's cry flies, To tell you to love life, Love it even if, time is a murderer, That takes away children's laugter, And the Mistral Gagnants, And the Mistral Gagnants.
He wrote this song for his daughter had it listened to his wife on the phone she told him take out the song where I leave you!! And it became this beautiful song that's a classic to me
"Mistral gagnant" is a name of a candy that no longer exists, but the mistral is also the name of a cold and strong wind that blows in the South of France. Mistral gagnant could be translated as "the winning winds". A wind that blows everything away, a bit like the time blowing away children's laughter.
Bizarre, bizarre. Thx for your work and videos.
HI DERECK RENAUD IS FABULOUS ARTIST I LOVE TO "MORGANE DE TOI" 1983 "DANS MON HLM" 1980 "LAISSE BETON" 1977 "IT IS NOT BECAUSE YOU ARE" 1980 THANKS FOR YOUR REACT DERECK
This verse breaks me. I lost my little girl when she was very young. This was the song I wanted to sing to her, but I never could.
Mais votre réponse me touche quand même.

He doesn't says "ruined our teeths" but "fu**d up our teeths" (but I guess you couldn't say that on youtube). That what's so great about Renaud, a mix of poetry (sometimes, but always good writing) and very familiar language, which is why we are all connected to his song, they feel really close to who we all are.

Yes, I can wait for Lara's version ...No problem. 😋 (Yes, it's well me asked specially this reaction)
That's All, Folks!
This song was voted the most beautiful French song of all time in 2014 ❤
Several years ago, Renaud told in interview that, when he composed this song, he told his wife he had made a song about their just born daughter but wasn't sure it would make a great song for the public to hear and he made her listen to it. After the listening, she answer him : if you don't sing it, I leave you. And so he sang and Mistral gagnant was born.
To sit on bench for 5 minutes alongside you,
To watch people as they go by,
To talk with you of good time that have gone or will comeback holding your hand and feeling your little fingers,
Giving food to idiotic pigeons
And faking kicks for fun,
To listen to laugh that cracks up the walls
But really heals my wounds,
To tell you how I was as a kid,
The wonderful sweets that we stole from the shop,
Car-en-Sac and Mints, one franc caramels,
and the Mistral Gagnants. (Mistral Gagnants being a type of sweets.)
To walk under the rain 5 minutes alongside you,
To watch life as it goes by,
To tell you about earth as my eyes devour you,
To talk about your mother a little,
And jumping in puddles to get her annoyed,
Ruining our shoes and laughing,
To hear your laugh as the sea's sound,
To stop and turn around,
Te tell you about past Carambars et the Coco Bohères,
The real Roudoudous that cut our lips,
And ruined our teeth,
And the Mistral Gagnants. (Roudoudous, Carambars and Coco Bohères are all sweets.)
To sit on a bench 5 minutes alongside you,
And to watch the sun as it leaves,
To talk about the good times that are gone and I don't care,
To tell you that the bad guys aren't us,
That if I am crazy it is only because of your eyes,
And they benefit from being two,
To hear your laugh rise up so high,
That away the bird's cry flies,
To tell you to love life,
Love it even if, time is a murderer,
That takes away children's laugter,
And the Mistral Gagnants,
And the Mistral Gagnants.
Hey guys, did you note how Dereck said "Mistral gagnant" ? He is definitvely a french speaker. 👍👍👍
And in provençal Mistral means "Master"
Bizarre, bizarre. Thx for your work and videos.
HI DERECK RENAUD IS FABULOUS ARTIST I LOVE TO

This verse breaks me. I lost my little girl when she was very young. This was the song I wanted to sing to her, but I never could.
Mais votre réponse me touche quand même.
He doesn't says "ruined our teeths" but "fu**d up our teeths" (but I guess you couldn't say that on youtube). That what's so great about Renaud, a mix of poetry (sometimes, but always good writing) and very familiar language, which is why we are all connected to his song, they feel really close to who we all are.
I think it's cause Google Translation doesn't know this translation. 😋
this piano is very cool!
Amazing to know his wife 's react 30 years ago . Same french people don t know this fact , i though i was almost alone to know this . Great Great Channel Dereck . Try LA TERRE EST RONDE from Orelsan , his easiest song , journalist call him french Eminem
It's interesting, to think that I grew up with it... And decades later I see someone both grown up and with a different mother tongue react to it... It's wild.
A Huge classic song in french songs ! What you can not translate is his street-french specific words and argot who gives another dimension to the song
But you can translate "argot" and "street-french" by... slang...
Renaud sing his personal feeling... Realy
