Balavoine for ever. ❤️
c etait balavoine
@@Mimix476 même époque même drame. Balavoine puis Coluche...
Dereck, clearly, he is one of the Monuments of French music... An Icon !
you're right you have him and Michel Berger
C'est une légende ✨
Jean jaques Goldman too
Yes 👌🇫🇷
Thank you.
Edit : Punaise 1k !

This is a "text" song, Balavoine was a writing jeweler, an emotion creator and experience sharer. This song must have saved hundreds, thousands of lives, it's the song that draws and screams the thin line between life and eternal darkness. This song is a lifeline. Find a translation if you can and hold on to it along Daniel's voice.
This. Exactly this.
I'm a french 34 yo metalhead and man this song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. He was a great man and a great singer
Cheers, from an other french metalhead, 35 y.o.
+1 guys. Die hard french metalhead too, but so much respect to this incredible singer.
Always loved Balavoine because you can feel that he sings with his guts and all of his soul... Goosebumps for me too !
Honestly i wish he performed on a metal album... I can imagine him singing along with Sortilège ;)
37 y o french metalhead
If you discover his amazing voice you have to listen to his “message d’un terrien en détresse” where he’s covering 2.5 octaves in the chorus. Definitely a monument in France regrettably lost in an accident in 1986.
I'm a 25 yo French. This song gives me goosebumps as no other song. I really love Balavoine even if I don't hear him a lot. What a singer, what an impressive men. Most beautiful thing in this world are always too short.
Dereck, you absolutely have to read a translation of the lyrics while listening : it'll break your heart for sure ! This is all talking about Mankind throwing tears through Space ! As a french born in the 70s, I growed up listening to Balavoine at the radio and TV, before his tragic death in 1986. :'(
You should listen to France Gall, "Elle l'a elle l'a" or "Résiste"...I'm sure you'd love it.
@@qbertqbert2 but... That's what he did, no?
@@keulk no he analyzed the music but not the lyrics
This song is so powerful. If you ever felt truly alone, this song hit miles. If you read French, you can appreciate the strong poésie.
I was about to say the same thing. The lyrics hit very hard.

Daniel was out of this world. Unfortunately he died in 86 at the age of 33 in an helicopter crash in the desert during the "Paris-Dakar race"... He was there for a humanitarian cause, Install water pumps in the desert..... Daniel Balavoine is also the first singer to have sung "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" covered by Dimash.
This one is incredible..: 😭💖💖💖 ruclips.net/video/Cmw6shyZEx4/видео.html
Balavoine is the songwriter of the song too !
Ps
Music ahead of its time and poetic text.
C'est trop beau, trop touchant, voix magnifique. J'aime tout de Balavoine !

@@ephraimveralta9076 agree
He died 35 years ago, he's still a top 3 favorite singer in France
And this song is his best by far imo.The way he talks about depression and suicide is incredible. And his voice is beautiful and full of emotions
We miss him a lot
I have a preference for Mon fils ma bataille, but i love all of his song.
I too have a preference for Mon fils ma bataille. He has lots of great songs and was involved in humanitary actions (where he lost his life in an helicopter crash in Africa).
I love him ! I was 6 when he died, I was shoking because he was a great Human. He sang engaged songs like : Lady Marlène (about the Berlin Wall) "Un enfant assis attend la pluie" (this song talk about african child), etc...
SOS d'un terrien en détresse 🔝🔝
I don t think so .
Brassens , johnny hallyday , gainsbourg , Goldman and Cabrel are the first
A CHAQUE FOIS !
I am Brazilian and I completely fell in love with the voice and music of this great French singer, he is simply my favorite singer, I identify a lot with what he writes, he is the best, great reaction is how I always get goosebumps when listen to this work of art!!❤️

Cameroonian and in love with Daniel Balavoine. I think he was the only French singer capable to bring French music on top of the world ❤️
Daft Punk ?
Lol Jacques Brel, Aznavour, Edith Piaf, etc are laughing.
@@mariepelletier1784 I think they went to the top alone then went down alone.
But IMHO Daniel got something that could have inspired a lot of French singers to improve/change the French music styles...
Unfortunately nowadays french singers seem to sing for France only. That's very small as a career vision.
Let's thank Stromae and Aya Nakamura...
Sorry but i disagreed
And the lyrics are absolutely amazing, the poetry is off the charts.

I (somehow) only discovered Balavoine in the last month, and it was quite literally life-changing. Unique talent, a hero.
One of his songs is "Je ne suis pas un héros". Litteraly "I'm not a hero" ^^
You definitely have to listen to"SOS d'un terrien en détresse". Daniel Balavoine was a genius
I was going to comment that, he will be blown away!
Well he probably knows the English version already. Starmania has been translated in English.
For information, Daniel Balavoine is the first (and best) Johnny Rockford ;)
@@senaluffyzoro I love Balavoine in general but as far as Johnny Rockfort goes, I think Bruno Pelletier did an absolutely stellar performance. He definitively set the standard for that role as far as Im concerned. The only guy I would have seen do better is Chris Cornell, and he's dead now - not that he would ever have performed in Tycoon anyway, but oh well. Maybe next time it'll be a woman in the cast and they can hire Olivia Rodrigo! 😬 _Oh the times, they are a-changin'_
I was thinking exactly the same thing
We miss him so much in France for the singer he was, the musicien he was, and above all the human he was.
As a French native I’m deeply touched by this song, it is part of the French musical history for sure. This is very 80’s spirit and style. Good on ya for the choice 👍
RUclips sent me here, I'm happily surprised to find Balavoine's song being analysed/enjoyed outside of France.
Yep, no auto tune, amazing voice, amazing lyrics. I was very young when he died but I do remember France going still for a while.
It is actually bringing tears to my eyes

I'm a french and grow-up with this period of singers like D.Balavoine, this track is intense, beginning of the music is very similar of the work of Peter Gabriel for his production of the great album of Birdy, the beautiful & poetic Alan Parker movie. Especially Quiet & Alone released in 1985.
When you understand all the lyrics, this is the moment when you can enjoy all the power of this music
One of the many gems by this artist considered a legend in France. His voice was very special and he was very generous. This man was still fighting for justice and the day of his tragic helicopter crash was a huge trauma in his country ...
Not only in his country but in all french speaking countries around the world.
Balavoine is an absolute reference for Frenchies like me who were teenagers in the 80's (they still listen to it these days, when they don t care for rap and cheap pop by the way!) - nice to see it appreciated abroad, good share, mate :)
35 years later, and we can't still get over his death, he was so young and talented...
This guy is a legend in France. Die too young unfortunately...
Lot of French people say he was murdered
@@marieline23 Be careful. Yes, many people say that. But, nobody can prove it... (like the accidentally death of Coluche 😪)
I absolutely don't say it's false. Even now, we don't really knows what happened. The official version is a bad condition in the desert (night and sand wind), helicopter was flying fast and low in the way of red light of a race car, and tragedy is coming because of a sand dune.
Also, supposed a mistake fire by soldiers in the conflict, because the helicopter is flying near military group's air space.
Also, an emergency take-off because of snake bite.
And last controversial theory, the organiser of Paris Dakar, Thierry Sabine take the command of the helicopter.
Excusez mon anglais ;)

His first great hit was "Le Chanteur", a bittersweet anthem of a generation
De lui c'est ma chanson préférée ! !
agreed, the lyrics on that one are a masterpiece and a true reflection on life
this song is very basic and incredible, in french school I've learned this song, and since now everytime I heard it I'm like "TOUT LES CRIS LES SOS" that's really an incredible song, cool to see american see french song, there's a lot more french music that are incredible, don't remember the name, and honnestly those singers deserve what they have now because they're talented each in a way.
Daniel Balavoine, my entire teenage years. I remember when I heard the news about his death, I had this cold, stuck at home, complainging to my friend about being sick when I heard the news. I burst into tears. I couldn't believe it. Balavoine, Berger and Goldman, the musical heroes of my teenage years.
It was a complete shock. I remember it very well. You could hardly believe it. It seemed impossible that a man with such vitality and promiss could just "die". And in some ways, he has not. The songs he gave us live on, a testament to his extraordinary musicianship and creativity. I recently watched a video of him explaining how he was creating this very song on his computer (in 84!!!!) Fabulous to hear his creative process. And who can listen to "Partir avant les miens" without crying, considering what happened? Tu nous manques beaucoup, Daniel.
Merciiii !

Happy you appreciate this work of this incredible singer. I love this song since the begining of my childhood. (I am a native french woman if you wonder.) He had big capacities and sang amazingly in a way the others could not.
The musical part is so modern, so ahead of its time. So unique too. His high voice and the deep lyrics made it a masterpiece. Its so sad though, but my favorite Balavoine's song by far 💕

those lyrics are also so beautiful, you can hear the music of the words, the sounds reapetly present in each sentence, and each have his place and his meaning at the same time.
Daniel was one of the best, tragic death... He was politically "angry" and did a lot to try to change mentalities. He was a good guy.
Et did quite some gems... "Lady Marlene" is one of them.
He also was part of the opera rock "Starmania" (Tycoon in English), and sang "SOS d'un terrien en detresse"... A huge hit with a high amplitude of notes.
Yes ! I was going to ask if someone told Dereck Balavoine was the original interpret of "SOS d'un terrien en détresse"! I'm so happy right now, I hope there will be other reactions about him 😊
he was a text singer, always a meaning in all his songs, a militant for human & women rights...you should listen to "L'Aziza" a song he wrote for his wife :)
"Mon fils ma bataille" so he was a militant for men rights too :)
It's a pleasure to see you so thrilled about this amzing song from our childhood. Ballavoine was extraordinary talented, and left us too soon. And you got it all. Thanks for this moment, Dereck!

SOS d'un terrien en détresse 😀
If he does Starmania he has to read the summary of the musical. Because every American musical seems so stupid in front of Starmania.
This song is one of his masterpieces.
Balavoine was the first french singer who used the Fairlight keyboards for recording music at home
For me, this song is the biggest french masterpiece. The song, lyrics, voice, everything in this shit is good, nothing to discard.
Well it is your opinion and your taste, but there are many many way superior french musics than this one.
Derek, I've stumbled upon your channel yesterday, and I loved the candor and the joy in your reviews is very uplifting. I am french leaving abroad away from my language, so I have focused on a lot of French songs I love, but with this one, you got me and it brought me to tears...of joy, of nostalgia also, as I miss my language *so* much some time, and I miss those singers whose songs were poetry, and Balavoine had such a powerful unique instrument. You know, to this day he is probably still one of the very best male voice of French music. His tessiture (range?) was wide, and high. Try some of his others if you haven't yet...they're all amazing, powerful, emotional. He was such a kind, generous, brave and rebellious soul taken too young in a tragic accident... you have me crying, I hate you. not.
I love this song of him and the title L'AZIZA too !

For the evil yes 🤣

Good for the buisness man 👍
... Not for the life 🚁
To answer the question about the strange sounds in the beginning of the song, this was accomplished on a Fairlight sampler. Daniel Balavoine was actually an early adopter of the instrument. There is a "making of" video of this song on YT.
This song is so elemental and give to the listener the power to do things according to the lyrics, the melody and music and the powerful voice and the way he delivers it. For this reason it s a mega big great song
Such a wonderful singer and song. Daniel took us all on a journey with his music. French music in the 80s was so varied and so very very good.
Endless, Dereck. There's a before and an after this song. more than a song, a temple. Those streams at the end, the bass, the colors. And you Dereck, in French we would say that you are "une éponge à émotions", " a sponge for emotions", but I don't think the image could work in English, but it's a compliment. You absorb musical emotions and you recreate them on the screen, and you do it so good, it's a pleasure !
I'm french and that's one of my all-time favourite french song. Daniel Balavoine was an amazing singer (gone too soon unfortunately) with great songs and a fantastic voice.
We miss him.
He would be mad about what we are living now.
More than his awesome songs, we miss his heart.
Hello I'm french and Daniel Balavoine is a lengend in the french music history. This song, is amazing because through it, Daniel Balavoine evokes the suffering engendered by loneliness and the desire to remedy it, shared between hope and disillusionment. The chorus stages the symbolism of the bottle in the sea, constantly returning to its launcher. In addition to its lyrical flights, this piece is characterized by its sound innovation. The intro is performed using a Fairlight CMI IIx. On a serious atmosphere, we hear samples of whistling trains, bells, ... punctuated by taikos and cascades of echoing boxes. The result was a modern world music which, at the time, gave its author a considerable advance in terms of arrangements.

Quelle magnifique chanson!
I'm so happy! You've finally discovered Daniel Balavoine!!! 😍😍
I am happy too !!
ah finally Dereck, you discover daniel balavoine, one of the greatest of the 80s but still today!
if he had not died in a helicopter accident in full glory and still in full rise, I am convinced that today he would be THE benchmark of French song.
he is the one and only singer of "sos d'un terrien en détresse". all his soul is in this song and noone equal him.
He has Always been my favourite singer ever. Love to heaven to a beautiful soul ❤️💖🌹
Love your sensitive approach, it's like we're sharing beauty while you're discovering this song. This is something strong which makes me feel really good. Congratulations for that project and thank you
