Renaud uses lots of slang in his lyrics, so it can be difficult to understand if you're not a French native speaker. Mistral gagnant was a powder candy. It takes the form of a paper bag into which a licorice straw is inserted to suck a sweet, fragrant powder into the mouth, making it fizzy on the tongue. If it said “winner” ("gagnant") on the bag, we got another one for free. That's what the little girl eats at the end of the song. It's a beautiful father/daughter song, very nostalgic of childhood, Renaud had a very happy childhood and it was somekind also hard for him to see his daughter grow.

Mistral gagnant wasn't a chewing gum, pink or green, and if discovered a green one, you won another chewing gum, so the name of "Mistral gagnant" ? Was a powder named "coco boer". Was all my chilhood 😉

There was this kind of power candy which sparkles in the mouth when I was a child (around 1980), I don't remember the name. It became forbidden because too chemical.

The song is about Renaud's daughter and the bond they share. How he takes her to parcs to eat candies behind her mom's back and how they play together in the mud and how every single laughter from her makes him melt with the joy of being a parent. This song is really him telling his daughter how much he loves her no matter how the world can suck and how sad life might get at times. That never he'll stop protecting her and making her happy the best he can.How the sound of her voice gets higher than birds, how her eyes are the greatest because they come in pairs..... the song ends with him reminding his daughter that time goes by too fast and soon she'll too be an adult with responsibilities, probably too busy to have fun and laugh.
My father used to sing this to me as a kid. He was a failed artist but told me he had always wished to be talented enough to write this kind of song to me. He would play it on the guitar for me, I would sing it. And I felt happy with him. Then I grew up and he became abusive, violent and he tried to kill me many times. Today I'm an adult and I still grieve the father I used to have. He is still walking on this earth but we haven't talked since many years. He is not the same man. Many things I can forgive, what he did though isn't forgivable, I'll let you guess.
To this day when I hear this song I wonder what took the sweet man I knew and everyone knew away from reality......
Le temps est assassin et emporte avec lui le rire des enfants.
What a masterpiece. I'll never not cry listening to it.

Difficult to understand for a foreign poeple because there is to languages mixed in the song (slang and french). The song speak about childhood sweets (Mistral gagnant), it was bubble gom(chewing gum) green and pink. When we brought chewing gum, if we found a green (=Mistral gagnant) you won another free one, but if it was a pink, you didn't won.

    Mistral Gagnant
To sit on bench for 5 minutes alongside you,
To watch people as they go by,
To talk with you of good time that have gone or will comeback holding your hand and feeling your little fingers,
    Giving food to idiotic pigeons
    And faking kicks for fun,
To listen to laugh that cracks up the walls
    But really heals my wounds,
To tell you how I was as a kid,
The wonderful sweets that we stole from the shop,
Car-en-Sac and Mints, one franc caramels,
and the Mistral Gagnants. (Mistral Gagnants being a type of sweets.)

To walk under the rain 5 minutes alongside you,
To watch life as it goes by,
To tell you about earth as my eyes devour you,
To talk about your mother a little,
And jumping in puddles to get her annoyed,
    Ruining our shoes and laughing,
To hear your laugh as the sea's sound,
    To stop and turn around,
Te tell you about past Carambars et the Coco Bohères,
The real Roudoudous that cut our lips,
    And ruined our teeth,
And the Mistral Gagnants. (Roudoudous, Carambars and Coco Bohères are all sweets.)

To sit on a bench 5 minutes alongside you,
And to watch the sun as it leaves,
To talk about the good times that are gone and I don't care,
To tell you that the bad guys aren't us,
That if I am crazy it is only because of your eyes,
And they benefit from being two,
To hear your laugh rise up so high,
That away the bird's cry flies,
To tell you to love life,
Love it even if, time is a murderer,
    That takes away children's laugter,
    And the Mistral Gagnants,
    And the Mistral Gagnants.

In a poll, Renaud's Mistral was voted the favorite song of the French. Renaud's famous ballad was voted “French song of all time” ahead of Jacques Brel's Ne me quitte pas and Barbara's L'aigle noir. Renaud couldn't dream of a more beautiful gift for the thirty years of his famous Mistral Gagnant.
Renaud's repertoire is very varied ballads, songs a little more rock and more committed (Badgad Kaboul, 500 connards sur la ligne de départ...) and sometimes a little crazy '(laisse béton) with a lot of slang and a Parisian accent which is recognizable among all

Mistral is a steady wind in southern France, blowing down the Rhone valley to the coast of the Med.
'Mistral gagnant' is the name of a regional sweet that the singer remembers sharing with his daughter when she still was little and innocent.
The song has been covered a lot, eg recently by Quebecois singer / group Coeur de Pirate.

did you get all the explanations in the comments? I imagine. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful French songs. And Renaud is one of the most popular singers in France, and one of the most endearing. Truly of the people and who speaks from his heart. He speaks here of the moments spent with his daughter, as a child, who remind him of his own at the same time as he observes the time that flees more than it passes. Childhood and the world that is passing away are reunited. In a regret that is no longer that of passing time, but of present time, fragile like a child.

This is one the most beautiful songs from a father to his little girl. Sad that there were no subtitles as it's very poetic indeed.
"Mistral Gagnant" is the brand name of a sweet that (I think) no longer exists, but that, in the song is emblematic of the father's own childhood, that he's telling his little daughter about.

It's kinda hard to understand but it's a beautiful wonderful song when he sing his love for his daughter. Using old sweets, that doesnt exist anymore, when he was a child, one of them was called "mistral gagnant" as in "hurrican winning" I guess there was some surprise to win back then. Renaud is using a lot of slang language, he was more a political singer. I think his wife urged him to publish his love song for his daughter, because it was wonderful, refering to his child and his own child experience. That song spoke directly to the memory of my mother, for the names of sweets inside, and i'm old :) Obviously he doesnt see his daughter as much as he wants : "If i'm crazy (barge is french slang) it's only about your eyes, because they're lucky to be two, and earing your laff flying as high as bird's cry. You have to love life, even if life is assassin and take with him, child's laffs... and the Mistral Gagnant (-I used to eat when i was child-)" Very moving. The last picture is actually what a Mistral Gagnant looked like, I never knew ! :)

    Hi,
Renaud (pronounce Re No), young father of a little girl (Morgane), wrote a couple of lovely songs for her.
As a father besides the bed of his sleeping child, he thinks to his own childhood, gone forever (the "Mistral gagnant" candies don't exist anymore), to all he'd like to transmit to her before she grow up, 'cause time passes and children grow so fast... and forget :
"Time is murderous and takes with it the laughter of children.
    And the “Mistral gagnant" ..."
🙏 Please read the translation Sylvielacouture gave you.
It is a very beautiful song, in a simple but poetic language (sometimes argotic) and a lot of names of old times sweets, that recalls all the little joys and sensations of a little kid.

Unfortunately for Renaud he has got a peculiarity that is unexportable abroad as he has immortalised the Northern French working class way of speaking from the 70/80's that only French mother tonguers can appreciate, even a foreigner speaking fluently French wouldn't get it...
