This song is about Marcia Moretto, the band's choreographer but more importantly best friend. She lost her long battle to cancer and the Catherine (the singer) wanted to honor her friend with a joyful song that's why we see many different kinds of dances. Catherine never really came off as en emotionally fragile woman to the public, she is always very controlled. This song slowly became the anthem for lost people we've loved more than a human possibly should.
Today Catherine is the last standing person from the band. Losing Fred, the guitarist but also her husband to another type of cancer in 2007. When she sang this live for the last time no one in the audience danced. Everyone was crying with her and for her.

    Bonjour Oncle D,

This video clip is 40 years old. Catherine Ringer is dressed by Jean-Paul Gautier and Thierry Mugler, the star stylists of the 80s and the decor is composed of paintings by artists such as Ricardo Mosner or Nina Childress, emblematic painters of the "free figuration" pictorial movement whose heads featured are Combas and the Di Rosa brothers.
With the music of Les Rita Mitsouko, this clip is a summary of the different artistic movements of those years and as such is part of the collections of the MoMa in New York.

    Lyrics in english:
    Marcia she dances
    On rayon satin
    Expanded polystyrene
    At his feet
    Marcia dancing with legs
    Sharp like cleavers
    Two arrows that give ideas
    Sensations
    Marcia is skinny
Beautiful on stage beautiful as in the city
    Seeing her dance transforms me
    In excited
    Ah Moretto like your mouth
    Is huge when you smile
And when you laugh I laugh too
    You love life so much
    So what is this cold
What do we feel in you?
    But it's death
    Who murdered you Marcia
    It's death
    You burned yourself out Marcia
    It's cancer
That you took under your arm
    Now you're in ashes, ashes
Death feels likе an impossible thing
And even to you who is strong as a rockеt
And even to you who are life itself Marcia
It was death that took you
    You might also like
    Marcia dances a little Chinese
    Heat in shoulder movements
    Flat like an Inca hieroglyph
    From the opera
    With the head
    She also dances very well
    And his face
    Dance with everything else
    She searched
    A new way
    And invented it
    She's the grasshopper
    The lovesick mermaid
    The dancer in the flannel
    Or the cardboard
    Ah Moretto like your mouth
    Is huge when you smile
And when you laugh I laugh too
    You love life so much
    So what is this cold
What do we feel in you?
    But it's death
    Who murdered you Marcia
    It's death
    You burned yourself out Marcia
    It's cancer
That you took under your arm
Now you're in ashes, in ashes
Death seems like an impossible thing for you
    Who is life itself Marcia
    And even to you
Who is strong like a rocket
It was death that took you

You can't imagine how this first song from them was huge when came out, and still huge: put it now in a party: everybody dance on it.
Thgere a lot a looooot to say about The Rita Mitsouko, but they are really important in the french rock / pop history.
Videos were always silly, a crazy world, with a lot of imagination, new sounds, everytime a new song / album from them was out, they tried really new things...and always with a big succes.
RIP Fred Chichin (the guitarist and husband of the duet), we lost a big artist when he died.
The song alwayus seems silly, crazy , fun, but when you know about the lyrics there are always a lot of deep meanings, mostly sad (I recommend "le petit train"... many french don't even know what it is really about).
Catherine Ringer is a complex and fantastic artist, her voice is amazing. Lot of people spitted on her at the beginning because, to make enough money to live before earning enough with music, she acted in adult movies (even Gainsbourg himself told her she was a whore in an interview, but as always, provocation and alcohol)
But, as I say, Rita Mitsouko loved provocation, they were incredible artist, on stage, on album, on videos, very very creatives and they pushed the limits of french pop rock music.
Rita Mitsouko is a french gem very important, but I can understand, when you hear them from the first time you can be speechless and think: well, who are those crazy stupid people?

What do us women care what Americans will think about whether French women shave or not? There are plenty of American female celebrities who are backlashing against those beauty dictats. In the 80's, I danced to this song until my feet hurt! Still do.
The lyrics cannot properly be translated, lots of metaphors. It's a tribute to an argentinian dancer who died of cancer. It basically says that even if Marcia was very strong, death had the upper hand. The music is very upbeat and looks like a surrealist painting, but the lyrics are sad. It's a tribute to the courage of a dead friend, who danced and did funny stuff until the very end. Making such an absurdly funny video is the band's way to give the Reaper the middle f!nger, like see, you will come for us all but in the meantime: Carpe Diem!

They had a quick popularity in the mid 80s. They made satires what was going on in france at the time thus the funny body languages, the attires catherine uses during the videos. As mentioned in the comments, this song was probably a tribute for a friend of hers.
Also there is a minority gypsie group called the "roms" in france. They hang out by the side of the road all the time like nomads. She sings with a broken french here just like gypsies do. This song is probably for them as well. They became iconic over the years. Their songs and the genre they use is pretty unique. I've learned to appreciate them over the years.
So yeah it's not for everyone. Mostly french people will get what they're saying.

I admit that without knowing the codes, it's very disconcerting, but in France we love them a lot, they're a couple, he, Fred Chichin unfortunately died, but she, Catherine Ringer, still sings!!! You are so comic, you make me laughing !!! ☺☺

The lyrics of this song have a tragic double meaning; in reality it speaks of death; especially of the death of Martia Moreto from cancer. The refrain "it’s death that has murdered you Martia". Some passage even evokes the state of a corpse "what is this cold that we feel in you?" or when she evokes "Your mouth is immense when you smile", "dancing Chinese" or even the dance movements like a "robot" or "zombie" of the singer. All this echoes to cadaveric states... Different states of body before, because disease, cancer and after when people die.

Hi! from the southwest of France. Bravo, your French is very good! It's a very popular song here. This singer started in porn and she was a feminist before her time (hair under her arms). I never understood the song either lol. According to wikipedia: "At the end of the 1970s, Catherine Ringer met Fred Chichin; the Rita Mitsouko group is formed, gives concerts, and Marcia Moretto accompanies them. The idea for the song comes from Catherine Ringer. She worked alongside Marcia Moretto again in 1980 for a play by Armando Llamas and Catherine Dasté. Marcia Moretto died shortly after, on May 21, 1983, at the age of 36, from devastating breast cancer. Very touched by this death, Catherine Ringer uses music created with Fred Chichin and writes lyrics evoking Marcia Moretto, in a song called Marcia baïla. This title is sung with a forced Spanish accent. It’s a tribute to Marcia Moretto, to her beauty, to her legs, to her laughter, to her gestures, “Marcia, she dances..”. The song also mentions his death: "You burned yourself out Marcia / It's cancer / That you took under your arm", to catchy music".

Rita Misouko is a completely offbeat group, a universe that is not attached to anything. It's certain that this may surprise you, but when you look closely you're not necessarily looking for what you can find on the street corner. The Rita Mitsouko who have had a very good career in France and Japan respond to those looking for a little diversity and astonishment.

The song is about a dancer from Argentina. She died from a cancer under her arm.
The song mixes all sorts of images and styles (Japanese, Spanish, French..).
The Rita Mitsouko has been an incredibly creative and successful band (until Fred Chichin died).
It’s so weird that it’s difficult for a foreigner to understand the song (she rolls the «r »s).

Thanks for the reaction. It's great to see US people listening to French songs (BTW, did you know one the most well known song of all time is French ? Guess it... It's My Way... Written by Gilles Thibaut and French star Claude François. French title is Comme D'habitude). So kudos for doing that D.
Ahhh... 80's videos... so much fun... so much madness, craziness. Yeah, it's weird, but so arty.
The song is about death (of a dancer friend Marcia Moretto). And yeah... we love to melt sadness with joy in songs... You can check Le Petit Train or Les Histoires d'A.
More French songs reaction please :)
