- Let's explores the awkward slopes that you can be faced with around the green - specifically, UPHILL and DOWNHILL slopes which can give golfers nightmares!
This video will discuss some of the options you have when faced with an uphill or downhill slope for chipping to ensure you still make solid contact and help you make the necessary adjustments to your set-up and swing. We also discuss the expectation when playing from these different slopes.
Any questions? Post them down below, and please consider "liking" and sharing this video if you found it helpful.

Fabulous job of adaptation, gave me a lot of insight, one take away was to make and pay attention to my practice swings. Your videos are so cool. Trevor in Gainesville Florida.
Never seen short game concept in SnT arsenal! Just splendid. Keep them coming, Mr.Cheney!
Rob, interesting method , tomorrow I will try it.I am a low hp player and pretty good at the short game. When I must play from a severe , steep up-hill slop I use my 64 w with 12 b. Actually I play the shot on a way that it is opposite yours.Hands forward, weight all on the left foot and in purpose I want that the leading edge digs in the turf, no follow through at all.
At set up the club-head nearly must touch the ball , this is the secret of this shot. You need a short back swing but with speed. If you leave distance between the ball and the club head, the leading edge digs without moving the ball.If instead you are precise the ball will pop up and it will check immediately .It is not a shot for fainthearted players because you must be very precise and to pull it off you need speed , thing that many players are afraid to use being so close to the flag.
Good help on the down hill! Tnks
Great tips as usual Rob - makes perfect sense. Can't wait to try them out. Thanks
Great information on the chipping and will use it on my golf trip this week, always great tips and drills that you give
BRILLIANT!! Thanks Rob, Going to try this tomorrow!
Thank you, it helped me a lot, with some doubts I had and now I have more resources to solve, especially a low slope, regards
I really enjoyed your excellent explanation of these two tricky golf situations we often find ourselves in Rob. I have basically been applying these principles with good results and in the set up I remain very aware of where my centre of gravity is located in order to assist my balance
Love it Rob
Excellent explanation and video!
Thank you Rob
Very nice video! Thank you
Brilliant thank you 🙏
Great video for the uphill and downhill lies in front of the green- a very common situation for golfers yet so little talked about and when it is all they say is match your shoulders and hips to the slope. Little is said about how to do it and almost nothing about the focus on where the club head hits the ground. Controlling the low point of the swing arc is key to successful chips whether uphill or downhill and much depends on the set up as suggested in the video. Very helpful. Thank you for your insights.
Query: how would you describe the difference between hips and pelvis (I thought they were the same) and how do you get them going in opposite directions?
Nice - immediately recognised a couple of the bad tendencies in my own game which i can now correct.
Not sure if you have done a video on bunker play and different type of shots - green side v dreaded 30-40 yard bunker shot. Or different lies in the bunker - fried egg, compact sand - that sort of stuff - would be great to see. Just a suggestion.
Rob, great stuff! For either the uphill or downhill shots can you open the club face to achieve more lift or do you use normal club face orientation? Thanks.
Been using your technique for 3 weeks now. It is great! Standard, uphill and downhill. What I find "difficult" is calculating uphill. Short all the time ): Should
@@golftecasia Thanks Rob! I will stay with the 56😊
Rob. can you comment on radial and ulnar deviation of the kead wrist when chipping on uphill and downhill lies Can you radial deviate and hit it higher off the downhill lie ? How are using radial/ulnar deviation these in these shots? Thanks
Ok,Rob all going well how about ball below feet and above feet say 150yd shot from hole
Rob,
I always struggle with the full shot on uphill lies - I have no problems with downhill lies.
Is the set up on the full shot the same as the chipping set up ie don’t stack the hips & upper body fwd as you only move the hips fwd.
Jerry
Do you set and release wrists, or firm wrists like Jason Day? Great videos.
@@golftecasia got it. I’m aware of the negatives of “flipping” and understand using limited wrist motion. Thank you.
Does the club face have to be open on the uphill chip ?
Could you do a video on a standard green side bunker shots? Trying different techniques including Gary Players metaphor of striking a match but nothing seems to work including that one. Mystified after 50 years of trying to get it out consistently. Does not appear to be within my wheelhouse. Help!
Thank you.
@@golftecasia Hi Rob,
Can't seem to find the video you just posted on bunker play. Where is it? can you send the link? Did a search and nothing showed up.
Still confused whether I hit the ground before the ball or just hit the ball
How to hit a 3-wood from a downhill lie. No one talks about it,
It looks like you opened the club face a little. Every time I try that the ball goes a little right and I do not know why.
Why don’t you use a 60 degree wedge?
