- On April 15, 1992, at the University of Texas at Austin, John first delivered the lecture "What's Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?", which launched his career as a speaker and advocate. Here's a clip.
I can't believe it's Been more than 23 years since you're fighting for equallity ...! Awesome...! Justice always arrives...! And common sense too!!!
Nice! Keeping it classic. I remember the days when you had to do analogies like this to get a heterosexual audience past the gay ick factor and engage the part of the brain that thinks.
It reminds me quite a lot of some of those "introduction to the internet" videos you would see in the early 1990s of Surfing Information Superhighways and such.
You were good from the beginning, man!
I love your channel, please upload more!
Wow, you were honing your skills even back then, leading up to the Supreme Court's big decision on June 26th. Thank you for engaging in these conversations, using your reasoning and persuasiveness to great use. Thank you for helping people open up and change their minds so they could become straight allies :-)
P.S. You were a cutie even back then!
As good then as you are now :) such brilliance!
You looked adorable in this clip! So, what happened to you?
Just kidding. You're amazing!
Great clip! I'm a big fan.
I fine this channel very nice. Thank you for helping me. :D
A deviation from a purpose does not destroy that purpose. For instance, the purpose of a watch is to tell time even if some people might use watches only for decorative purposes or to settle a gambling debt.
+Paul Rhodes
How about if that purpose has never been necessary?
Well played sir
Who is this dashing young man and where is the distinguished Dr. John Corvino?
The analogy actually backfires because drinking only Diet Coke will make you sick. Dr. Corvino certainly does not want to argue that engaging exclusively in homosexual relationships will make one sick.
Engaging in homosexual relationships don’t make you sick

Diet Coke is unnatural!!!
^^^^this just made my day
Handsome ❤ Smart
John could you clarify how this fits into the debate about homosexuality?
Are you serious? It’s obviously referring to the outrageous and stupid argument that homosexuality isn’t “natural”. Just like how drinking “Diet Coke” isn’t “natural”. They call it unnatural, it’s not unnatural, but even if it was, it wouldn’t constitute any hate, oppression, etc. much like Diet Coke.
@@catcollector719 yea I get generally it is referring to the "natural" argument. But more specifically, when he says the natural purpose of a drink is to provide nutrition and hydration, that would be analogous to people saying the natural purpose of marriage is to procreate? And then pepsi, which does not provide nutrition or hydration, would be analogous to childless marriages. I am sure he explains this later in the lecture.
@@mslapik Its more likely to be a more stupid comparison. IN the sense that, its saying marriage without "biological children that share DNA from both partners", seeing as a gay marriage is in no way a childless one. Making those against it way more petty.
Coke drinkers are not clamoring to be respected as people who as concerned about their health as, say, those who drink carrot juice.
+svefn gengar If the point of the analogy is that ephemeral pleasure and ephemeral pleasure alone is a perfectly acceptable purpose of erotic activity, then the analogy has really woeful shortcomings. For no one drinks only for the sake of gratifying the tastebuds, but gays and lesbians always engage in homoerotic activity only for the sake of pleasure. The analogy actually shows the exact opposite of what he wants it to demonstrate for if someone uses drinking only as gays and lesbians use homoerotic activity, then he will become very unhealthy and probably die prematurely.
+svefn gengar How would that gainsay my analysis of the above analogy?
+svefn gengar I thought you would say something to that effect. But your previous statement was very unclear. It could mean that that same-sex relationships have other sources of intimacy such as deep conversations or long walks in the woods, both of which do not constitute erotic activity. So, thanks for the clarification. You meant that erotic activity is used not only for ephemeral pleasure but to build intimacy.
Okay, fine, but the analogy still fails. Because the only reason to drink diet coke is the ephemeral delight of the tastebuds. The comparison between homoerotic activity and diet coke plays right into the lands of those homophobic bigots who claim that gays and Lesbians are superficial hedonists, and clearly that's the exact opposite of the message that Dr. Corvino wants to convey.
Personal survival does not depend upon fulfilling the reproductive purpose, sure, but the continuation of the human race does.

If you for even a nanosecond think that John didn't consider the issues you are having with his choice before he made it, you know little to nothing about him. I'm sure you are quite aware of the fact that having actual sex has never been a requirement of procreating. Adam and Eve could have had children without fucking.
You mean if Adam simply masturbated and then rubbed his ejaculate into Eve's vagina? Be serious.
Hate to be obvious, but just in case anyone believes that old myth, no colas don't take more water from the body than they add.
He was cute then he's way cuter now. ❤
That's cute. LOL
And this is not snarky, Dr. Corvino?!
+Paul Rhodes I see you visit this video quite a lot, Paul. You have made a lot of comments. This seems to be on your mind quite often. I wonder why.
+SailingSeignior Address me by my surname, please.
Paul Rhodes No.
+SailingSeignior Fuck you, too.
+SailingSeignior Yes, I must be gay. Yawn.
This was pretty stupid. The person I'd drinking the diet coke for their pleasure but that pleasure is actually hurting them in the long run.
We all die in the end enjoy everything while you can. Smart ass(you can enjoy coke without it having a detrimental impact on your health)
Huh you had a very similar speaking style and cadence to James Randi.
