There are physical and practical limits to this kind of technology too... you can't have a high end gaming or productivity machine the size of a phone with long battery life, low heat dissipation and physical reliability, running on a mobile OS.

      I think the OS could use some work, and ultimately my dream is a Windows phone that, when docked, is just full Windows 10 64 bit experience. Maybe the internal storage is partitioned, one for the phone OS, probably Android, and one for Windows, but they share the same Documents/Images/Video/Downloads folders.
      I tried this on my S20, and while neat, I think the Dex OS is pretty limited like Chrome OS and app compatibility is an issue.
      Also a nice dock you can sit your phone on with all the ports in the back (LAN, 2 USB, USB-C charging, HDMI x 2, SD and MicroSD) rather than have it laying flat on the table/desk.

    • @sharoyveduchi
      @sharoyveduchi 3 года назад +4

      Yeah that's true I guess. You still will miss out on a lot of software though like Solidworks, good video editing software like Premiere or Kdenlive, many PC games like TeamFotress 2 or Titanfall 2, and have less control over things like how many apps will be able to insert ads into their software while PC applications usually don't have any ads at all.

    Samsung also restricts the number of open/active apps on third-party adapters to 5. If you use the Station or Pad you can have more than a dozen active apps running on screen.

    When my Windows tablet broke a little more than a year ago, i replaced it with a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6. I wasn't a hardcore windows user, so i figured i would be happy with an Android tablet.
    Samsungs DEX defenitely can't replace a windows PC. The Android apps just aren't tablet or desktop-like friendly.
    As far as Samsung has pushed DEX, there still is an issue about how long they will support it. As far as i understand the Tab S6 will not be getting any more DEX or Android upgrades, even though it is only 1 generation old.
    Don't get me wrong, i still like the Tab S6, but i only use it as a media consumption device and you defenitely don't need DEX for that.

    The last time I used Dex a few months ago, it had a way to select to set up the view so all the files in the phone were displayed on the monitor exactly like they are on the desktop computer with Windows 10, so it was just like moving or copying files back and forth between desktop folders. I just updated Dex a few days ago, unfortunately, because it seems like that did away with the user-friendly organizing system and made it so it is a lot of guesswork and experimenting to copy files, and then things still go wrong. Also, I like to compare sizes of files I copy to the kilobyte to be sure they were not corrupted, or that all the right files were copied, and the old system could do that, but so far I cannot get the new Dex to show that. Am I missing something, or did they hire a high school dropout to create their software updates instead of college-educated programmers? They can save a lot of money that way. Good for them.

      I think they already knew that, thats why they're in a reasonably good position (so far) to protect themselves from such a situation. Microsoft's cloud division presence and marketshare is behind Amazon's Web Services, but still second place and far ahead of Google in that regard. Google's Stadia initiative doesn't seem to be going well either, which must be a sigh of relief for the Xbox division and Project xCloud.
      Advanced AR devices (like glasses) can be a point of danger for Microsoft if Google successfully transitions their Android users to their future platform for it, but work on the HoloLens seems to be their bet for that future. Google seems too quiet and MIA, aside from the very quiet, modest and occasional ARCore updates.

      Tip: If you're keen on using Dex, highly suggest buy the BlackShark cooler fan, so that it can sustain consistent performance for long time. Because it will heats up when using Dex, so this might help the performance

      Hey, i have the shittiest exynos on planet earth (ex 990) on my note 20 ultra and it run as good as ever for my usual use (netflix, office, multitasking etc). But the only game i play is Hearthstone which runs fine on Dex and Genshin Impact which performs as good as when i play it on mobile (high 60fps)

    Shadow or Moonlight + Your PC are the only streaming services I'd ever use. Geforce Now was cool until publishers got greedy.

    We need this feature direct from ANDROID than any OEM's. Regards.

    DeX is truly awesome and a worthy, efficient, and productive resource in many situations. I'm about to commit thanks to your DeX related videos along with this morning's coffee. Now, let me search for your latest Dex video... unless you're having coffee at six am, this morning on Friday February 11, east coast time. Just reply to this comment and we'll chat for a few minutes.

    Now, if only Apple had some sort of Dex-like feature with their M1 chip and a NexDock-type device too. Obviously performance to be scaled down while used as a mobile, more performance while docked perhaps. Having Apple in the game would make this more mainstream, which is something I hope to see more of.

    • @MattKasdorf
      @MattKasdorf 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, I left Apple for Samsung, as it was a cheaper alternative. But now with Samsung devices costing >$1000us... if Apple had a "DEX" feature I'd consider switching back.
