However, when it comes to PSP or Dreamcast, it could upscale. If you want older, less demanding consoles though, I could emulate plenty even on the HTC Sensation back in the day. Emulators are more demanding today (progress leads to more powerful hardware providing more accurate emulation), but you can easily emulate PS1, even some N64, even on an old quad core. @@jimmynich4791 N64 is actually relatively difficult to emulate considering the power of the device, at least on arm. That said, more powerful dedicated emulation devices than either Pixel or S7 are just coming out. You still have plenty of power in those devices. Install Muoen64 plus fz and you will be able to upscale and install high res textures if you wish. I would also expect you will be able to do both DC and PSP, maybe God of War will hit the wall at 2x upscale, for example, but these are still capable devices. As for the controller, you can get a clip and combine it with an xbox one s controller for example. It can also be done with PlayStation controllers, albeit with a bit more complication. There are also some new Xbox compatible controllers with a clip built in, I think by Razor, can't rember as I really don't like those. Or an 8bitdo with a clip. Still, can't stand them personally. As for the telescopic ones, Razer Kishi is good usb-c model, or Gamesir X3 (usb-c or Bluetooth depending on the phone), then there is Saitake 7007x or similar, those are nice. Ipega has some cheaper models, if you're strapped for cash.
Man, the Essential was a solid little phone and you can snag one for like $75 these days. This was a great video, I never even thought about using an Android phone as a "console".
I literally bought an Essential Phone because you were talking about them in one of your previous videos. Pretty impressed. It's not as good as my s20 but it definitely does good for a dedicated emulation phone. I call it my Phonetendo Switch😅 also I bought an Ipega controller because of your videos 😅
Well, the Essential PH-1 was released in 2017 and the Samsung Galaxy S20 in 2020. I'd be pretty shocked and fucking pissed if a phone from 2017 was as good as a 2020 flagship.
I'm still using a Note 8 and it works great with Dex. I would have upgraded by now, but for some reason new phones decided to ditch expandable memory. It still works just fine though, and I just ordered a portable 15" display for a little over $100 for taking this and my gaming devices on the road.
I have a Note8 but have to upgrade because apps stopped supporting android 9. I was watching this video to make plans for what to do with my Note8 after I upgrade.
I’ll have to try this with a Google Pixel 3XL I bought brand new. I’m totally an iOS girl but back when the 3XL was just coming out I thought I’d give it a try to see what all the hoopla was about. I hated it! lol 😝 So to this day I keep it charged and it has been sitting in a shelf ever since. If this works, at least it will get turned back on once in awhile. Thanks for posting!
HDMI over USBc is *key* - couldn't agree more. I bought a Samsung A52s ~2 years ago, and it was extremely disappointing to find out that a €450 phone lacked this feature.

just occurred to me, but how many bluetooth controllers could one actually connect to an android phone? or even connect via USB through a USB-C dock? might be great for some multiplayer mario kart or power stone.

Looks like this is even better than any kind of SBC, portable, easy to install and used, can become handheld or home console, have most of the computer functions.
I'm about to use a G8 for this more than likely. Good specs and cheap. I got one last year cheap, seller lied to me saying it was factory unlocked but was actually originally t-mobile so it doesn't get VoLTE on my carrier, I had to switch to a cheap iPhone SE 2020 they gave me cheap as a daily driver and the phone has just been laying around. My 3700x and 3070 gpu gaming pc heats my room up too much living in the hot and humid south us, I also have several hdd and ssd that probably aren't helping the matter if they each run ~40c+ . The phone has 128gb built in and I already put a 512gb micro sd in it awhile back so plenty of storage for emulators
Didn't like how you referred to the Essential PH-1 as an "old phone". Just look at how it handled all the emulators you mentioned! I can even play Super Smash Bros Brawl in a decent speed with this phone 😂 Although it is a phone that was released back in 2017, but it's still a damn good phone to use even nowadays.
Excellent video! I think many viewers should have some older smartphone at home ... and this is a very good use for that instead of buying a FireTV Stick or something similar! But I do have some questions, +ETA PRIME : How can I detect, if my smartphone supports HDMI over USB-C, especially since that feature is often not mentioned in the spec sheets. I do have an 2017 HTC U11 with 4Gigs of RAM and also this SD835, but I'm not sure. Also with LG phones like the G6 or G7 ... Should there be a hint in some settings that do come with that feature embedded? And: Is there a way to use this combo with the smartphone screen off, so that it does not shimmer all the time? My U11 has a broken screen and a battery that does not hold that good anymore, but I really would like to use this like you showed in the video. Maybe an App can turn off the screen without turning off the device? Have you heard of anything like it? And I'm currently looking for a small remote for such a setup/ SBC/ Tiny PC or even an XBox Series S. I have one for my older XBox One S that cost 10 bucks. But the One S has an IR port. How can I have the same comfort on such a setup? This is like a Raspi with androidTV and a fluent RUclips playback. And for that: thumb up! And with something like Game Pass Ultimate on the android device and a fast internet connection ... it could be worth a try to play games without even having a console. The smartphone should be way more efficient than any mini PC or console even can be.
Funnily; I've read that the LG V30, G7, V35, and possibly the V40 didn't ship with HDMI over USB-C activated. They had the hardware installed, just not the software to run it, which allowed LG to add it later in an OTA update, so any of them you'd find on Swappa or eBay will have it. However, none of the reviews or marketing materials from when they were new will call it out.
Yeah mobile gaming has a potential, an additional screen can be used for an additional UI, currently its used as mirror. Nintendo and Dreamcast had this feature before, but this feature has been forgotten

Good idea but unfortunately HDMI over USB-C is not supported on the Pixel 3 lineup. I checked since I had the same thought for my Pixel 3 too. Bit of a shame.
The great thing about snapdragons is you can squeeze out the performance. My SD870 can still play heavy games all I did is disable thermal throttling ( i have external cooler ) and update GPU driver
I absolutely loved the essential phone... shame that with such a great looking device that it had so many problems. The quality of reception on the ph1.... yuck.
DisplayLink is a software and hardware solution whereas usb-c with displayport alt mode is only hardware based i.e the image comes directly from the GPU. DisplayLink software captures the screen then compress it and send it to the hub which then decompress it and send over hdmi.. that makes it not suitable for gaming.
Ok, have to chime in here. I use an LG Stylo 6 phone (daily driver). This phone does not support HDMI-over-Type C natively (although it really should). Recently I found a device called a Miraplug on Amazon which claimed to convert an output from Type C to HDMI. Guess what? It actually works. The app you need to install will convert the video signal but I haven't figured out how to get the audio over the same plug so I Bluetooth the sound to a speaker. Edit: Found out that I had to link the audio to the dongle's own Bluetooth receiver.

You do want a Snapdragon if you can get it though, e.g. a Snapdragon 636 is weaker than a Kirin 710f, yet it will emulate better quite often.
@@youzernejm I dont think I want to go upto game cube I have gc emulation on my mini pc downstairs. Maybe n64, ps1, snes, dc, psp, gba, etc. I'm due an upgrade from my s9 soon but the screen is cracked so thought I'd use my old s7 if I can find it. My girlfriend has an old Google pixel lying around somewhere just needs a new battery but they're cheap. Any fone controllers that are good?
@@jimmynich4791 N64 is actually relatively difficult to emulate considering the power of the device, at least on arm. That said, more powerful dedicated emulation devices than either Pixel or S7 are just coming out. You still have plenty of power in those devices. Install Muoen64 plus fz and you will be able to upscale and install high res textures if you wish.
I would also expect you will be able to do both DC and PSP, maybe God of War will hit the wall at 2x upscale, for
example, but these are still capable devices.
Ahh... that Ratchet and Clank takes me back... can't even count how many times I replayed the shit out of it. Anyone remember the OP gun Ryno?
The fact that my so call old phone cant even unlock without lagging, highly doubt can emulate anything, a phone maybe
With mine the home screen has crashed a couple times
What phone?
It can emulate up until ps1
Just finished Link's Awakening on GameBoy Color emulator on my old Android 6.0. Totally hooked on it.
@@agnel47 did you enjoy the game? Did you finish it?
Man, the Essential was a solid little phone and you can snag one for like $75 these days. This was a great video, I never even thought about using an Android phone as a "console".
I literally bought an Essential Phone because you were talking about them in one of your previous videos. Pretty impressed. It's not as good as my s20 but it definitely does good for a dedicated emulation phone. I call it my Phonetendo Switch😅 also I bought an Ipega controller because of your videos 😅
Phonetendo switch 😅
Well, the Essential PH-1 was released in 2017 and the Samsung Galaxy S20 in 2020. I'd be pretty shocked and fucking pissed if a phone from 2017 was as good as a 2020 flagship.
Looking forward to the video of testing emulation on a smart fridge.
As much as I love the raspberry pi or the bootleg handheld devices, nothing beats cheap old Android phone.
Agreed - and with the ability to load Linux on them, Android phones are quite capable.
The sd835 is still a solid workhorse. I still have an essential ph1 phone and still use my galaxy tab s4👍
for older phones that don't have HDMI over USB C, DisplayLink might be a solution
I got my Redmi Note 9s thanks to you videos. It's one badass little emulation phone!
His old phone is too much powerful than my new phone😄
What a LEGEND!
i just bought a cheap 24 inch tv, and i already had a usb-c to hdmi cable. now my tab s6 is basically a switch lol
Switch pro confirmed?
Lol
Did the same with my Galaxy Tab A.
Uhhhh...no.
"basically a switch". Get real man.
Please bro, make more of this! Let's make the phone = work pc = gaming rig possible!
I'm making a GamePass machine. GamePass was a God send this past year.
I was just looking up ways to do this with my Galaxy S20 the other day... It's like you read my mind!
In the s20 you have Samsung dex so it will be much easier
@@ANabih-uo3zy I prefer the look of ATV launcher over dex

This is a nice setup! I might give this a try thanks for the idea and the video.

Nice, what controllers and adapters do you use?

I’ll have to try this with a Google Pixel 3XL I bought brand new. I’m totally an iOS girl but back when the 3XL was just coming out I thought I’d give it a try to see what all the hoopla was about. I hated it! lol 😝 So to this day I keep it charged and it has been sitting in a shelf ever since. If this works, at least it will get turned back on once in awhile. Thanks for posting!
Pixels don't support HDMI out 😡 I need a diff phone cus I have a Genki Switch dock that could be using for this
Dude...I love the content and it sounds just as if Frank Zappa is hosting this, awesome....
This Soc has very similar performance to the newer Snapdragon 720G but with less efficiency and other modern features
HDMI over USBc is *key* - couldn't agree more.
I bought a Samsung A52s ~2 years ago, and it was extremely disappointing to find out that a €450 phone lacked this feature.
sadly samsung doesnt support dex on all their phones.

Thanks for the information. I am going to see what my LG G8 can do. Just got my LG wing. Might as well get my G8 working.

Recently started to be able to do a lot of this thanks largely to your channel. When i upgraded to my s 23 ultra i was able to load it up with what i want :)
That dollar store stand is cool.
only thing I can afford in the video
Good Idea. There are a lot of ppl with old phones and for $20 u can make a nice android tv box type thing from it. I can digg it.
just occurred to me, but how many bluetooth controllers could one actually connect to an android phone? or even connect via USB through a USB-C dock? might be great for some multiplayer mario kart or power stone.
KOF Allstar - I’ve been playing this for 4 months solid! It’s so awesome!!!
Genshin Impact had a big update on controller support.. should be able to use a xbox one or PS4 gamepad.. its in settings and change the touchscreen to controller you have linked to the phone.
Isn't that just for iOS, not Android?
i really love this kind of content
can u do a comparison between dex and the other apps from a worker perspective using all the office tools video conference etc? since it's been more common working from home the phone can substitute the computer in some cases
that tv launcher app is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I'll love to see a full tutorial on how to do this emulator thing I tried but wasn't too successful. And I mean from step 1 to finish a full walk through😁
Hey can this phone do GameCube
Looks like this is even better than any kind of SBC, portable, easy to install and used, can become handheld or home console, have most of the computer functions.
If your old phone can run these emulators and have hdmi output support then maybe it's not that old.
The LG G8 is another great option for this. They don't break the bank and have a Snapdragon 855 so can play Wii, GameCube, and 3ds really well.
True. In beat up condition they could be around $200 or so
I'm about to use a G8 for this more than likely.
Thanks ETA !!! Loved the video.
Excellent video! I think many viewers should have some older smartphone at home ... and this is a very good use for that instead of buying a FireTV Stick or something similar!
But I do have some questions, +ETA PRIME :
How can I detect, if my smartphone supports HDMI over USB-C, especially since that feature is often not mentioned in the spec sheets.
Can you show us how to install LineageOs on an android device using Raspberry Pi and adb in your next video?
Uuu. Kinda nice.
I think he has that video already. all you have to do is to browse his channel. There is also a channel that is doing RPi related video. check out leepspvideo
1 install custom recovery by using pc
2 go to recovery mode
3 connect to pc and put lineage os onto phone storage or simply put os into memory card
4 there will be install option in the recovery mode
5 browse your os and hit install
I have done that since 2018 with my Samsung Galaxy S3, a video-cable adapter and a bluetooth controller ;-)
I've got a pixel 3 I now know what to do with. Thanks!
Good idea but unfortunately HDMI over USB-C is not supported on the Pixel 3 lineup. I checked since I had the same thought for my Pixel 3 too. Bit of a shame.

I assume high cpu load + display on + charging will produce a lot of heat. Maybe too much for gaming over hours...

USB-C to HDMI isn't the same thing as DisplayLink, is it? Some of those hubs use DisplayLink.
Not the same, I have a display link adapter for phones that don’t support video over Type C and I get a lot of lag with it.
I use display link adapters (dock) with Android. It isn't the same, but it's still pretty cool.
DisplayLink is a software and hardware solution whereas usb-c with displayport alt mode is only hardware based i.e the image comes directly from the GPU. DisplayLink software captures the screen then compress it and send it to the hub which then decompress it and send over hdmi.. that makes it not suitable for gaming.
this would go great for those that want a console pc gaming setup
My old phone can't even run minecraft. That is what old means.

I wish there was a way to turn the phone screen off without it turning off the monitor screen
It's Android, probably a third party app that'll do that.
Turn the phone over/around or cover the screen
Ok, have to chime in here. I use an LG Stylo 6 phone (daily driver). This phone does not support HDMI-over-Type C natively (although it really should). Recently I found a device called a Miraplug on Amazon which claimed to convert an output from Type C to HDMI. Guess what? It actually works. The app you need to install will convert the video signal but I haven't figured out how to get the audio over the same plug so I Bluetooth the sound to a speaker. Edit: Found out that I had to link the audio to the dongle's own Bluetooth receiver.
Will the app work with other usbc to HDMI? Like any old run of the mill one off amazon?
