I bought my Lepow after you first reviewed it and by far the greatest advantage it an on the go second screen for my workstation laptop. Just plug it into my laptop and go. It feels amazing. The Dex compatibility is just a plus. Having the ability to whip out a screen and have a desktop for word, excel, etc whenever my laptop is dead or whatever or play a game that I only play on my phone just feels like the future. Not to mention my Switch will connect to the Lepow with the included USB C cable out of the box! I mean what? Coolest thing I've bought in a long time

I bought my phone specifically for this reason, as I am moving into my van and wish to conserve as much power working. You can run a full Linux distribution within DeX as well and for my work this is important. I have the S10e and am very happy with it. The fact that my internet connection is already built-in to the phone means I don't hit with speed caps for tethering or hotspot usage. For heavy lifting work, i have a Dell XPS 9560 with a 100WH battery which gives me about 5-8 hours of heavy work like video editing but consistently get about 10 hours on that with economy mode on and light web browsing and working on documents. This means I spent less on solar panels and batteries and still be able to work from anywhere for long hours. It's great!

    Awesome video, thanks a lot!
I bought a portable 13'' touch monitor and use it with my Note 10+ and DeX for 3 months now.. this has almost exclusively basically become my laptop.
This concept is the future. Its almost perfect for daily use actually. And in my opinion this happens to be the most important in forward-looking development from Samsung, and the one absurdly they market the least.
The ONLY issue I am still facing with it, is that I do graphics work and the monitor I purchased and use with it does not suport any pen, just finger touch. I tried all sorts of pens.. nothing works. Surely this is not an issue with DeX, it's just a shortcoming of the monitor itself and at this point is the only real issue forcing me to sometimes still having to use my Windows 10 machine.
If Samsung follows up with meaningful and productivity oriented DeX upgrades (or if Google gets it done first and better), this is the beginning of the end for Windows (and all standard desktop environments as we know them today).

9:51 you dont need a rotation control app for leaving it in landscape mode, that functionality is built into the phone. Go to "settings" -> "display" -> "home screen" and toggle on "rotate to landscape mode." Now you just rotate the screen, pull down the notification bar, and lock "auto rotate"

Rumor is it'll come to older phones too. There's also a few lapdocks (that's the term for what you're describing) that work with DeX but certain models have issues. I'll see if I can find a link

Nice set up. I tried the same with a Pepper Jobs 15" monitor, gave it back due to missing the "fold it and go" portability of a netbook or tablet, but having a 15" touchscreen act for your phone....nice. Be aware so you don't make the same mistake as me. The Type C MUST be 2nd Gen. First Gen is mostly for power, and either doesn't transmit data at all, or insuffecient to trigger Dex Mode. Hope it saves folks some headache. Now the power IN (on the R hand side of the device) can be Gen 1, but not the Type C from the phone to the monitor....that one must be Type 2. Nice video ETA, clean, informative, links to necessary items is an excellent touch.

So you basically used DeX and all of these components to create what is essentially a laptop experience. This set up is something that a laptop could have done with significantly less set up and in significantly less time. If you're willing to carry around a portable monitor and a keyboard then you could simply use a laptop. A laptop also allows you to move everything as one unit while your set up does not. You can play Android games on a laptop, too, by using an Android emulator such as Andy or BlueStacks.

@Dross M You are right about laptop's potability but how much is a 15" laptop? $1000 additional at least for the one with a similar memory capacity? Everyone need a phone and if you get one with Dex you don't need to spend that money at least for home provided you have an extra monitor and right connection. But again a portability is another issue.

    • @joo7454
      @joo7454 5 лет назад +11

@Dross M why are you comparing the low end laptop when this demo monitor is clearly a good quality one and the phone has way better memory capacity than that?

@Dross M You see if you are serious gamers or graphic users buying another decent laptop for big money make sense. But if you are a day to day user like me this totally make sense. You don't have to convince everyone and so do I.

This really is a great proof of concept but not at all practical and in general you could get by with a decent Samsung Pro Tab and do most everything the same way with less bulk and an attachable keyboard with a pen. Let alone the cost and weight of having to carry that around and setting it up.... Again, great proof of concept but just not practical at all.

I like all the individual parts, they all seem super cool and useful and I can see myself getting that screen sometime soon. At the end of the day though, you seem to have a laptop that is falling apart. you probably also have to buy a bag to hold your loose screen and loose battery and loose keyboard and your mouse and your xbox controller. It seems super fun to put together if I already have all the parts but it seems impractical to actually buy all the parts for the specific goal of roughly approximating a laptop.

I'd recommended the HP x3 lapdock. I've Tested on Note8, Note10+, S10, and S10+. You can also screen share with it and has an micro hdmi port port for a second screen. It has 3 USB C ports. One is a video in for if you hardwire your phone in, it has a built in battery, keyboard that lights up and a track pad (thought it sucks), along with a very thin profile and aux Audio Out, because there are no speakers. Cost me about $270, but I happened to find it while it was on sale

I love this set-up, just wish the phone with dex enabled wasn't so pricey! eventually this tech will trickle down to cheaper phones (I hope), when that day comes I'll upgrade my phone to a new one just for the sake of powerful portable emulation and basically a cheap efficient laptop replacement. Would love to play some Gamecube games on-the go!

DEX setup for doing sales presentations: Note 9, Morphie 15k Battery, ThinkPad Compact Bluetooth Keyboard with TrackPoint, UPERFECT 14" LED Display plus two USB-C cables. All items fit snugly in a 14"x 10" protective sleeve. This configuration allows sharing of the Display while doing a sales presentation to clients - RUclips videos, PowerPoint slide decks, etc. plus the other "Desktop" feature offered with the DEX - email, Google, Facebook, etc. And send/receive text messages or make phone/conference calls. Easy to setup when meeting with clients at a coffee shop or other informal environment. I can also use the Display panel with my ThinkPad Helix laptop and have a second display. But the former configuration is very portable and lightweight as I always have my Note 9 with me and having everything in a slim carrying case is very handy and not as heavy as carting my notebook computer around. Thanks Samsung. :)
