The S Pen is not a gimmick, and the S24 Ultra is not particularly small; it is more akin to a mini-tablet. However, it is often referred to as a gimmick by those who do not fully understand its capabilities. While Samsung DeX is a useful tool, it is unfortunate that the Linux project was canceled before a stable version could be released. This would have allowed DeX to function more like a laptop and provide additional functionality beyond a simple desktop interface. It would be beneficial for Samsung to reconsider bringing back the Linux project and potentially partnering with Microsoft to offer the full version of Office 365 and other Windows-like programs on the Galaxy Store. This would greatly enhance the functionality of DeX and make it a more valuable tool for users.

Just got my S24 Ultra and discovered this yesterday... I don't know how they don't heavily promote this. It's such a sick feature, I'm going to ditch my laptop completely and bounce between my built desktop and Dex for travelling!
Huawei wasn't promoting their version of this and that's back when they were still operating worldwide. DEX isn't anything new and the fact many people don't know about it sure makes the question relevant.
Its because they also sell laptops, tablets etc. So they wont have as many sales, I had S20Fe for 2-3 years just switched to S23U and JUST TODAY I found out about Dex. I always saw it in the settings but never clicked. Probably the case for many people
I remember using dex with the Note 10 and the dex station. It was awesome back then, and it is marvelous now. The S24 ultra is an absolute portable computer, and Dex allows to unleash its true potential.
Funny thing that I found out similar feature on my old Huawei P20. It is not as advanced, but I didn't know the whole time it was there. I have ordered s24+ also for this function.
I’m switching from an iPhone 11 Pro Max to a S24 ultra. I’m definitely going to use Dex for ar sunglasses (Xreal 2 air). Can’t wait until my phone comes in!
Your TV doesn't have DEX. Your phone has it and you connect it to your TV with wireless. Any TV or monitor with wireless or hdmi will work, not just Samsung TVs.
Yes I've been waiting for this and the s24 ultra emulation test , that's why I love my s23 ultra. The Dex and flow and smart view integration with my Samsung TV is amazing
I loved the Dex on my S10+, even wrote essays on it. I can’t understand why Samsung isn’t promoting this like crazy, and I’m concerned that they’ll suddenly remove this one day. Thank you for covering this feature, nobody else is showing anything about this and this is going to be one of my buying decisions for a new S24 series phone.
Thank you for the review. One significant aspect of DEX that seems overlooked is its potential to replace a fully-fledged PC, particularly regarding applications like Outlook, Word, Excel, etc. Could you consider doing a review on these apps, focusing on how they compare to their PC counterparts?
I agree. I was waiting for this to come up. But instead the video went on about gaming. Don't get me wrong it was a well done video but I was hopeful for the "work" part to actually exist and be a contribution to adults.
Just got an S24. Wicked fast. Dex is still a novelty, if I were a nomad or lived in a tiny home though, this setup is legit for low power and small form factor useage.
You can connect wii controllers and run multiplayer upscaled wii games with a hub, a 4k tv, and a dolphin bar. Ive put together powerpoint presentations for school with a hub and keyboard & mouse. Ive even played flash games, applied for jobs, and studied cards on quizlet 😭😭
They really need to start promoting this more and use it along marketing with the ULTRA phones. Just the fact that the S24 Ultra with the Snapdragon 8 gen 3 that holds the same performance of a Apple's M1 Chip and can be turned into a desktop/laptop replacement alongside with S pen and everything alongside is crazy AF.
I hope you're wrong, but for what most people use a PC for, a smartphone has plenty of power. Once you can use things like Visual Studio Code or other programming IDEs on a mobile device, I think only the most "hardcore gamers" will build their own PCs. I say this as someone who has built their last two PCs and uses them for programming as well as entertainment.
físicamente es imposible aun que un procesador y una tarjeta de video tan pequeñas superen el poder de una pc o una laptop para ciertas tareas, pero para lo básico en una pc, está más que excelente.
I completely agree. especially considering this phone in in it's lowest configuration is more powerful than the Chromebook and entry level laptops a lot of people have. Not to mention there's somehow a massive population of "mobile gamers" who play phone games competitively that would benefit more and more from features like Dex. I work in IT in a college and I can see massive benefits of having a terminal instead of a traditional PC for students to work at. about 75% of the students only ever use a web browser and they're required to have a phone for College provided Office 365 two factor authentication. Might as well have that phone do more.
Nah. It really isn't. I'm glad this works for some people but this entire feature is mighty useless to anybody with a gaming PC and/or laptop. It's cool if you just wanna do basic tasks like this video showed but nah
I still think Apple are missing a trick not offering something similar. Each year phones in your pocket get more and more powerful, docking them in various gaming, laptop, hifi, vr, computing modes seems an obvious AiO truly personal computing solution.
youre missing that us techy men are the minority lol. most people are girls or non techy men and dont care at all they'll never use anything but their phone or tablet at all. besides that apple is greedy and has proven they dont want to cannibalize mac sales by making the ipad a good desktop replacement.
This is literally putting the flagship phone hardware to good use whereas it is mostly wasted just being in a phone. As others have said, Samsung should really promote this more and nake it a mainstream computing experience.

@@TrentonMatthews you're right! My friend pointed that out to me. I already had s22 Ultra and wouldn't upgrade to 23 anyway. I guess I just blocked it out of my mind 😂
Best video about DeX on YT, great job Bro. It seems we share similar usage scenarios. I've switched from s22+ with Exynos to S24U and I can confirm the difference. On S24U it is noticeably more polished and faster experience.
I've used Samsung Dex on my Galaxy Z Fold 2 (if anyone was wondering, the Fold 2-5 all support Dex as well) but its pretty awesome; all you need is a USB-C male to HDMI/DisplayPort male (you need one specifically for video out iirc, but I forget what it's called) and it just works. I use my phone to download episodes of anime ALL the time because I have a method and its quick and easy for me, so if I downloaded something while I was out and wanted to watch it when I got back home, its just plug and play and now I can finish on my 4K monitor using the phone as nice big trackpad since I have the inner Fold display. I'm replacing my Fold2 with a OnePlus Open though, however, so while the Open is amazing, I'm not sure if it has similar functionality. It's worth it though, I think the Open is an objectively better phone hardware- and sofware-wise than the Z Fold5 is, so I dont mind the lack of a DEX.
I really want a nintendo switch-like future where everyone has everything they need on a tiny phone and we just drop them into docks and stuff to watch and do anything we need. Have a phone, it does literally everything, just switch it to a bigger screen to get other things done.
@hambo76 not only do most docks just allow you to unplug the charger cord separately, but phones now have bypass charging. Dex is 100% a great computer alternative.
This is super impressive. As soon as I get my finances sorted I think that I will start saving up for one of these babies. Hopefully by Q4 we'll have an even better model. What sold me on the S24 is the battery is fairly easy to replace. It even has a pull tab so all you need is a razor blade, and a heat gun.
DeX was my computer for (office) work and personal use since 2019. I say "was" because I start to use a similar option from Motorola, the platform React For (Moto Connect). I think it deserves a video too, great one about DeX!

I've heard about Samsung DEX but didn't know exactly what it could do. After seeing this review it's something I will most definitely will be using when I purchase my S24 Ultra. Keep in mind that Dex is much more feature limited in older devices. The S8 for example has just a couple of available resolutions as outputs. There are also snapping features missing. The newer the phone, the more features you get. Dex on S8 is vastly different than on S24.
@@dlewis9760 Totally, and I agree. But it should be more "out there" that this is the case. Nobody mentions it and a lot of people assume feature parity between S8 and S24 when RUclipsrs say that it's available on all of them. You don't realize it's not updated on older devices like an app off of a store. It's an OS-level feature, and therefore, functionality is dictated by the OS. So saying the feature is available from the S8 to the S24 is not telling the full story. That's all.
Samsung is killing it in the gadgets market at this point! A phone capable of running a 4k monitor and still independently work as a phone is straight out of science fiction.
Since you have "Good lock" installed In "Multistar" module there are some extra settings for Dex. E.g there is an optiom in it to run as mamy apps you want as if you do not use dex dock it does.not let you run more than 5 apps at once but if you turn it on you can do so with any hdmi dongle(even third party)
With DeX, Samsung phones are the ultimate work devices. You need no PC, just a DeX stand, BT keyboard and mouse, and you're ready to go. Also, seems like the DeX changes between s23 Ultra and s24 Ultra are quite significant.
Got the dongle...using it and loving it! I was even able to daisy-chain in a USB ethernet adapter and am getting 716mbps down over a wired connection on my MOBILE phone..😂
Can you do a emulation stress test? I would like to see at what point do these new CPUs start to struggle with emulation. It would also make a great continuation video each year where could compare last years hardware vs this years so we could see how far phones/emulators have come over the course of one year.
You can't really do it they can handle everything pretty much the only time they struggle is on emulators that aren't well optimized so it's not really fault of the phone itself it's a software issue
@@The_MEMEphis that’s exactly what I mean, we could see the evolution of the state of emulation year over year and would give people a better off when would be the best time to jump into emulation with Android/Dex.
still rocking s22+ no issues whatsoever especially the DEX mode. I have my retro games and movies everything in my pocket and my condo in bangkok have this crappy old TV so i bought simple USB C to HDMI and i would watch and play on that TV screen. Everyone including myself keeps wondering why Samsung doesn't advertise this great and fairly unique feature more aggressively. They're one of the very few manufacturers supporting this, and Dex is probably the most refined version. You'd think such a great sales point is the wet dream of any advertising department. "Replaces your whole PC!" etc. My best guess is, they hardly ever mention it because politics, internal and external. Maybe they wanted to in the past, but found it would piss off too many of their business partners, after all Samsung is a HUGE supplier of all kinds of parts for the whole industry, so as a whole they have a vital interest to keep parts sales going.
Never seen one of your videos before but definitely will look to you for Samsung content again. Gonna go unleash this S24 Ultra on my TV right now 🤘🏻✌🏻
Galaxy S20 has been my primary setup for gaming thanks to Dex, PS2 Emulation, GameCube, SNES, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo 64, GTA Definitive Edition, this shit is AMAZING
Does it has ide (like notepad++/vim)? Does it have docker/podman? Can it open multiple of the same app say excel? I want to know it this can replace my laptop...
so i had a look and i can have multiple word and excel docs open however you would need to find an alternative for Vim or notepad ++. also i would suggest getting a model with 12gb of ram.
mostly i use dex at home connect on big screen for emulator. honestly one of the best versatile phone i use since i move from iphone xs max to s23 ultra.
Just want to point out Mr. ETA Prime that not only Samsung "S" models got Dex. Recently I bought XCover 6 Pro and to my surprise, it also has Samsung Dex!
i use it on the S23+ from time to time, with such an adapter. But it's NOT GOOD! There is no pinch to zoom with keyboard and mouse, you need a Touchscreen! You can use the phone as a tpuch pad, but that works very very slowly. Worst thing is that there are almost no Apps working like a normal Desktop program. Google office for example is horrible. Some Games do not work at all in Dex mode, you can only mirror the screen to play them. Also Web Browsing is not good, it's still not the desktop Chrome, you still get mobile sites and you can't use plug-ins. It's a nice gimmick for sure, but not good for productive working.
You used dex as “full PC replacement” in mind, ofc it won’t be that good. It’s for people whose phone is enough to do everything they need including their job and could benefit from doing them in larger screen.
I think the reason why DEX and other smartphone desktop modes aren’t heavily promoted is because companies like Samsung do not want to cannibalize their own product sales. They want to you to buy a smartphone AND a laptop. Not a single device that acts as both. To Samsung, DEX is just a gimmick that will help them sell phones. They don’t want to people to see it as a tablet/laptop/desktop replacement. This is the same reason for why Apple doesn’t give iPhone a desktop mode, or put touchscreens on Macs. They want you to buy a MacBook, an iPad AND an iPhone. Sure, an iPhone that folds out into an iPad-sized tablet with macOS-style desktop mode would be the dream of any Apple user (and the natural evolution of their technology), but Apple would never do that because it would eat up sales from the iPad and Macs and they’d lose profits.
also on the s8 and up to the S24 Ultra phones of course. lets say your using an older device like the S9+ which I have if its feeling a bit sluggish right on stock battery optimized mode. you can just switch it into "high performance mode" make sure you have picked a Dock adapter that also allows for power pass through! cause using dex alone on battery for a long time will leave you with zero battery. I have also found if your playing games with dex mode, you have a controller hooked up, your playing a honkai impact 3rd, Genshin Impact any intense 3D games sometimes when you are going crazy with 5 apps open all at once you can sometimes no always but you can end up over drawing the power that coming in to the phone as well. with my S9+ I will also have setup a wireless charging pad as well hooked up too so it can receive power 2 ways and you just have to do either first or last and it will work just fine. which is pretty cool. I love watching youtube, playing the MihoYo games and chilling relaxing back and having a good time. and browsing things like tik tok. I love that the multi tasking aspect for some apps like instagram wont reset or unload the data your looking at when you want to go to an external site you click on, absolutely mint! The only thing that dex is missing maybe this isn't a total issue but I find that some Video editing apps that are setup for a Portrait setup don't realize when you want them to be landscape at all so yeah there's not many apps that are setup for video editing that work in landscape mode that I have found yet that have the feature set I want. And NO Adobe Rush is trash, it's a paid application and doesn't have the actual pro tool set of the REAL Premiere Pro features your used to.
Smartphones lack the extra circuit pass through to run the phone off wall power exclusively, so by leaving a Smartphone plugged in at 100% you're constantly drawing power through the battery at max voltage which damages the battery exponentially higher than if it were 75% to 100% in that time frame.
looks amazing. cant understand why xiaomi hasnt done something like this yet...all phones should in fact. hopefully someday samsung includes hdmi out to their midrange phones...
So basically we can carry our PC in our pocket now? My question would be; 1. How it's gonna effect battery life 2. Does it "hurt" the phone (does it technically overclocking the phone?) 3. Does the phone camera detected or can be use as "webcam"
I have the older Samsung DEX Samsung galaxy S8. The device is hockey puck style unit. the device has a built-in little fan that turns on when phone heat is detected and turns off at a certain temperature. I'm very satisfied with my internet surfing use. I think it's time to upgrade to S24 and new DEX. Thanks for the video info.
I would like to see ad ons to browsers, it needs to become more independent such as brining back Linux or giving dex it's own store where we can install desktop version of office 365, programs such as R, Python, Java, thry need to fix there right clicks, we should be able to snap 4 windows and they need to reinterface system apps to match PC for example redesign the setting apps on dex to imitate windows. Like let use take true advantage if dex and market it as a pocket PC, but at that point might as well just use a laptop why use a reskined android. This feature is more pratical on galaxy tab and they just want to continue selling the galaxy book 360 pro, otherwise they could make dex more independent rather than just relying on mobile stuff only
@@Shan_Shah Firefox has them. But my understanding is the browser running on Android still isn't the whole feature suite as desktop ones. I see DeX as a convenient solution to do some minor things on the go. If I need to purchase a lapdock for it, I would use a laptop for portability and use desktop at home.
I remember back in the day they had a laptop with no actual computing components inside. It was just a keyboard, screen and battery and had a cabel that hooked to ur phone to run the whole thing. I miss when companies cared about innovation and wanting to be the first to introduce a new product. Now it's "how can we find a way to give them less while charging them more" i.e- phones that come without chargers
Combining this with a Nvidia Geforce and Game pass subscription is wild, im literally playing Starfield and Manor Lords at max graphics via my phone. No gaming pc required. Crazy.
Watching from a Samsung Tab S7 FE, Dex is really a game-changer for me. This is what I use when I want to write game articles minus the other distractions. 😂
Even though Samsung DeX (in its current state) could never outright replace a full-fledged desktop OS like Windows or Mac, it still comes pretty close to doing so for many people, and that's impressive. It has a lot of potential still, because I love the idea of having a full computer in my phone that I can tap into. I just wish it would at least let us run virtual machines with Windows or Linux-that would be awesome and make good use of the 12+GB RAM that flagships have nowadays.
I switched to a Google phone when the 7 pro came out, not knowing they weren't capable type C to HDMI what so ever. Which surprised me... I love the phone but I still regret switching. I'm coming back to Samsung!
This alone converts an android device into a REAL laptop replacement. As a side bonus, hooking this up to an external dispkay does saves a lot of battery
I actually already feel that way with either my S23Ultra or my S8 Ultra Tablet. We probably won't upgrade until 6-9 months from now when the google store has good trade-in sale towards it.
DeX (Desktop eXperience) is by far the most underrated, underpromoted feature and at this point one of 2 reasons i would get a samsung phone again, the other reason being the S Pen. Education, corporate, just for fun. I cant go on about this enough.
You can see in the video it’s more than that. iPads are bigger screen iPhones, android tablets are bigger screen androids. Imagine plugging an iPhone into a display and getting something like the MacOS desktop. Tablets, no matter how big the display only let you have one app open full screen or two open in a split screen. This has windowed applications, drag and drop between apps that support it, it runs on the phone so it’s not some cloud pc kind of thing. I know you can drag and drop on iPhone and most android phones in the same way but it’s cumbersome at best. Companies have been trying to create a true “all in one” for years. Windows phone had Continuum which was a sad, early, limited version of a full windows pc. Those phones with laptop shaped docks, were literally your phone stretched to a 11 to 15 inch screen. Samsung nailed it here. Honestly at the end of the day it’s like if chromebooks were good. But then you can’t fold up a Chromebook into your pocket like you can with a phone.
@@gibonzproject9710 it’s not meant for people with displays just randomly around the house or somebody with a full gaming pc already. It’s best in a corporate environment, where companies can just issue a work phone to employees instead of a phone and a laptop, and doesn’t have to spend a ton of money on a full IT department to remotely manage updates for laptops that don’t need specialized programs. But it’s useful for anybody because you don’t need remote cloud pcs, a $200 Chromebook that won’t get updated in a year or two, you just a USB C to HDMI cable, a Bluetooth keyboard, and any display or TV with an hdmi port.
Makes me wonder why Samsung doesn't outright make this a software. They could add some competition to the pc software market- MacOS, Windows, and Dex. Just needs a little more work and then I reckon they could slap it on their next galaxy book. Also would open their laptops to different processors I can imagine
Dex is great but the problem with using it for travel is you have to rely on the avilability of a screen on arrival at your destination. Plus in order to do some real work, still requires a keyboard and a mouse. So you still have to take those things with you and if there is no monitor on site you have to have a screen with you. And at that point it's just as well you can take a laptop with you. lap top is still more convenient as todays laptops can go on baterries for hours and you can use them, in transit , like on a train, plane or stop at any gas station (or just on the side of the road for that matter) and use it on baterry power when traveling by car. Or use them in any hotel even a random "shithole" without a screen or electricity for that matter:) More of a use case for this i see is if you have a home in the city and a home outside the city or something like that. And you have both of those places equipped with periferals (screen, kayboard , mouse) then i can imagine just using the phone as a PC, Just plug everything at your home, or your office, at you country home etc. that way you have your PC always in your pocket. And while in transit if you have to do something quick you could manage with just the phone. The other use case wold be when you just dont neet a mobile setup at all and you always work from home. Then you would not need a PC or laptop in your home. Just a monitor keyboard and a mouse. Use the phone at home as a PC, And when you go out and use it just as a phone. but then if you dont need a mobile setup you still probably be beter of with a laptop at your desk or a PC. So the DEX is a great thing but it occupies a very hard to pin point niche. IT would require Apple level marketing shananingans to sell this to people as something they really need. And for people to ditch their PC's , laptops and use just the Phone for everything.
Lol its wholly inferior to using windows. I tried it on my s24 ultra, but its slow and sluggish response wise using a mouse and kb, 4k as is shown is nigh on unusable cant see shit, and a ton of apps that dont open in landscape mode, like Discord.

I loved the Dex on my S10+, even wrote essays on it. I can’t understand why Samsung isn’t promoting this like crazy, and I’m concerned that they’ll suddenly remove this one day.

Thank you for the review. One significant aspect of DEX that seems overlooked is its potential to replace a fully-fledged PC, particularly regarding applications like Outlook, Word, Excel, etc. Could you consider doing a review on these apps, focusing on how they compare to their PC counterparts?
You could just stick with the Google Stuff. Might me good enough for a lot of people.
This would be what gets me more excited about dex.
I agree. I was waiting for this to come up. But instead the video went on about gaming. Don't get me wrong it was a well done video but I was hopeful for the "work" part to actually exist and be a contribution to adults.
Kesinlikle bu konuya odaklanan bir video da gelmeli
Unfortunately the mobile apps aren't as full-fledged at all like the real desktop versions Unfortunately, maybe in the future

I still believe this is the future of average consumer PC experience. The smartphone.
Not when POS smartphones are as locked down as they are...
físicamente es imposible aun que un procesador y una tarjeta de video tan pequeñas superen el poder de una pc o una laptop para ciertas tareas, pero para lo básico en una pc, está más que excelente.
The only thing the Samsung S24 Ultra is missing for a true PC replacement is a *second USB C Port*
Wow. I keep telling people to ditch those dam iphones
I still think Apple are missing a trick not offering something similar. Each year phones in your pocket get more and more powerful, docking them in various gaming, laptop, hifi, vr, computing modes seems an obvious AiO truly personal computing solution.

True
That my ideal future too, but battery tech needs to be improved

Keep in mind that Dex is much more feature limited in older devices. The S8 for example has just a couple of available resolutions as outputs. There are also snapping features missing. The newer the phone, the more features you get. Dex on S8 is vastly different than on S24.
More powerful chips/more functions. I've used it on my S21 and it's good enough for me.

Finally someone made a video about the S24 Ultra Dex feature ❤
If Apple did something like this the tech community *cough cough* MKBHD, would go nuts and would make sure the 7 seas heard about it.
Never seen one of your videos before but definitely will look to you for Samsung content again. Gonna go unleash this S24 Ultra on my TV right now 🤘🏻✌🏻

I would love using 1 device both as my pc and phone
If this feature was flushed out it would be insanely useful ‼️
i use it on the S23+ from time to time, with such an adapter.
I disagree
I had a Galaxy Note 9 before my current Pixel handset and forgot all about using Dex, especially on a bigger screen with Emulation.
but... for 1300€, you have a better computer than this
Yeah but you're also getting a phone and computer in one
Yes but you won't get a great phone, great camera, good PC and a great writing pad among other smaller stuffs.
@@MarcABrown-tt1fpThe S23U and presumably S24U can draw power straight from the port to the chip. Uncertain about the S22U.

So basically we can carry our PC in our pocket now?
My question would be;
1. How it's gonna effect battery life
2. Does it "hurt" the phone (does it technically overclocking the phone?)
3. Does the phone camera detected or can be use as "webcam"

I'm very satisfied with my internet surfing use. I think it's time to upgrade to S24 and new DEX. Thanks for the video info.
Samsung DEX is really useful. I wish Google Pixel has such features too.

Oh yeah! I use dex almost everyday. I absolutely love it.
Awesome video about Samsung DEX 👍
Kindest regards, friends and neighbours.
Gosh I love your channel. Please continue doing what you do!
DEX is the reason I switched to Samsung. I still got an S22 but it works.
Or use them in any hotel even a random "shithole" without a screen or electricity for that matter:)
More of a use case for this i see is if you have a home in the city and a home outside the city or something like that.
I’m thinking about switching from iPhone to Samsung because of this. Great feature!
Watching this with Samsung Dex
Seems better than Windows in my opinion, haven’t used Dex since Note 9 but always wondered what came of it, it’s nice to see they’re improving it.
Lol its wholly inferior to using windows. I tried it on my s24 ultra, but its slow and sluggish response wise using a mouse and kb, 4k as is shown is nigh on unusable cant see shit, and a ton of apps that dont open in landscape mode, like Discord.
@@TerranigmaQuintet Definitley not slow and sluggish. You must be doing something wrong. Maybe a cheap cable
