As a professional artist myself, or a young one at that, I don't see anything wrong with the art supplies and the actual art supplies section of walmart. The acrylic paints are pretty good, the drawing books are okay, much more decent than some of the discounted sketchbooks I've gotten from michaels, there are definitely some cheap things there, but they definitely sell a good brand of drawing paper that my art teacher would always give us. She was very ecologically friendly, and so I trust her judgment that this company is good with that. If you would like to know the extent of how eco-friendly she has tried to be in the past, we were once doing a project involving paper plates, where we made collages or something I think I don't quite remember, I just know that's what I did, she literally bought eco-friendly disposable plates that are biodegradable and unbleached paper and such. She was such a wonderful teacher, she was always very laid back and open-minded and fun. You know how most baby boomers tend to be never mind didn't crappy? She was not. She was very bubbly and accepting and happy, she really tried to bring the best out of all of her students through inspiring their inner artist. She never pressured us to do art in any particular way, she believed we each had our own art journey. I loved her

I'm glad you're addressing the Walmart shaming. A lot of people forget that sometimes places like Walmart are one of the few or only options. If you live in a smallish place like me it's more practical to shop at Walmart because they have everything. If you go to target a lot of things are missed or too expensive, and Kroger only sells groceries. So yeah.

yes, i too am glad. i dont get art supplies there, i try to save up for nicer ones but when it comes to food. im on food stamps and also vegan and walmart actually has a lot of cheap vegan options, so its really the more budget friendly option than other places. i try to buy local or from small business when possible, but its just not always possible with the money. and i know when i have kids in the future i will just want to do whatever to provide for them, that is more important than boycotting large corporations like emily said

target actually has a really good art supply section! at the closest target to where I am (which is NOT a very big store by any means) they had a BUNCH of art supplies under their “mondo llama” label, such as sketchbooks, alcohol markers, watercolors, acrylic paints, brushes, and more. And not just their store brand, they had some of the fine art crayola products, some prismacolor products (brush pens, alcohol markers, color pencils), and a nice variety of art papers, and even some art guide books for sketching and watercolor

    • @pumpkinmaryam5500
      @pumpkinmaryam5500 3 года назад +8

ALSO while I’m at it three other stores that deserve honorable mentions:
Five below: I’ve gotten several of my sketchbooks from there, as well as two different sets of alcohol markers, plenty of pencils, markers, pens, gel pens, etc in their art section. They also have paints but I haven’t tried them yet as of this comment
Ross: I know, I know, a discount clothing store having art supplies? Seems crazy, but actually they have a decent art supply section! I’ve actually gotten pretty decent acrylic and watercolor paints from ross, as well as HEAVILY discounted strathmore sketchbooks (watercolor, mixed media, drawing, and so on), among other things. Because they’re basically a close-out store, they have extra stock that other stores couldn’t sell, and therefore you can find a LOT of decent supplies there.
Tuesday Morning: Okay so I don’t know how common this store is around the country, but where I live there’s at least one in all the bigger towns near me. They’re also a close-out style store (the name comes from the days when they would get shipments in and turn over inventory) but you would not BELIEVE the stuff I’ve found there. Spectrum Noir illustration marker sets, quality sketchbooks and cardstock, bruynzeel color pencils (regular and watercolor), sketch pencils, canvases, wood panels, washi tape....you literally never know what you’re going to find. If you don’t find something good that time, literally just come back the next week and they’ll have entirely new stuff in their crafts section. And because of the kind of store they are, the discounts are EXTREME. I got a bruynzeel color pencil set that was worth nearly 50 bucks for 15.

As a minor and someone in the doll customizing community (which is you don't know is very commonly super expensive and it seems like many artists feel the need to buy expensive products to 'advance') I found myself feeling the same way and feeling like my cheaper work wasn't good enough. it took me 3 years to finally get over that and realize that there is value and skill involved in making art for cheap and being thrifty which is what I'm all about now and it's actually a challenge for me to see how cheap or zero spending I can go!

Walmart actually has quite a bit of decent art supplies now or at least mine does they sell 24 pacs of prismacolor scholar pencils not as nice as premier but a lot better than crayola ! And just the other day they had a 4 pack of Uni-Ball Signo board pens! In white, gold, silver and metallic red! And they’re starting to sell decent brands of sketch books as well like Canson and stuff. I’m excited to see what her local Walmart carries. 😁

To be honest the 40% anytime was the only reason I kept shopping there. With Walmart they revamp their art department; there are some really nice art supplies there but I noticed that I haven’t seen the Canson Mixmedia books as of late either. I loved this video! Also, that disclaimer you made was great. Walmart has upped their quality in recent years and while it's still an awful chain, they do have some decent supplies for affordable prices. I remember I used to get most of my things for school and doodling at Walmart because we were hard on money. Now that I've collected some art supplies over the years, I like to look back at my starting items and watch people make profession art with cheap supplies. With the right skills, you can't really tell what the price of the artists tools are.
For anyone wanting some more ideas relating to what she said, lemme info barf some supply knowledge here:
    Crayola:
You can do watercolor washes using the classic chubby crayola markers. Color them onto a palette or glass/waxed plate and mix some water in.
The semi-soft tips of thick crayola markers are great for practicing lettering, calligraphy and line weight. I'm a caricature artist and we use them to do practice sketches and lettering sometimes. (They are not lightfast though and will get bleached by prolonged exposure to light)
    Crazyart:
At least it's not roseart! Crazyart markers a pretty good cheaper version of crayola and they have some vibrant colors. You can do watercolor thing with them too.
    Prang and Bienfang:
Two watercolors that are about the same as crayola, though prang is probably a bit nicer.
    Proart:
Not as popular or as cheap as crayola, but cheaper than the top brands. They have some great woodless pencils (color and graphite).
    Artist Loft:
Overall they're supplies are pretty good (haven't tried they're acrylic). Their watercolor pencils are cheap but good quality. They have some solid canvas panels if you want to experiment with oil/acrylic painting for cheap. It's a good option between Crayola and student or even Uni grade supplies.
    The classic art kits:
We all know those all-in-one art kits either in plastic or wood boxes. One kit I got growing up had some hard watercolor pans arranged in rectangular plastic sections. I still have them to this day and they are pretty pigmented. My art professor from college told me she still kept the ones she got when she was younger because they're a great, affordable gateway into watercolor painting and they just have some nice vibrancy. There's better cheap ones now, maybe a few bucks more, but there's some goodies hiding in there (watercolor, pencils, sharpeners). You can also repurpose the wooden box ones for your other supplies.
Student/Scholar versions of more expansive brands:
Derwent, Prismacolor ("Prismacolor Scholar"), Faber Castell, Staedtler, Daler -Rowney and Liquitex all have a student or 'scholastic' versions of they're supplies. Winsor and Newton has university varieties (i.e. cotman watercolors) but they're still a bit pricey. I don't trust Daler-Rowney paints but they're graphite, charcoal and ink supplies are good enough for college work.
    Paper:
Walmart carries Canson paper and I highly recommend it (sometimes it's cheaper there than at Blick art store). That was and still kind of is my go-to drawing, sketching paper. Strathmore is pricier but they have different series, some with lower prices. Both have recycled options.
Copy-paper. While it might not be archival it's useful for so many things, and you can always spray a drawing with a fixative spray.
    Croquis-paper from Daiso
    Pens:
Ballpoint pen (any non-gel rollerball, Bic is really common). Take your pic of a brand. I got a pack of 50 recycled bic pens for under 10 bucks at Staples. They are a sketching and emergency art staple!Use them for sketching, doodling, writing, portraits, realism, graffiti, calligraphy whatever you want! They're just like a more permanent pencil with similar degrees of line variation, shading and layering capabilities.
    G-2 series gel/ballpoint pens
Uniball and Uniball signo varieties. Signo types are waterproof when dry
Pentel (pens, brushpens, lots of variety)
    Pilot and Pilot Technica
Zebra brush pens and regular pens (can be found at daiso sometimes) and Zebra Sarasa (sp?)
    Brushes:
Princeton always has a student variety of brushes (oil, acrylic, watercolor etc.) and I love them. They have some nice springy synthetic brushes. They have a wide price range to choose from as well.
Princeton Art and Co. Real Value tm brush packs are amazing. They're good quality, usually not over $16 (us), and you get multiple brushes up to maybe a size 6. (I have some for testing out different mediums in case I wreck them).
Royal & Langnickel and Loew-Cornell brushes and pens have been horrible for me, but Royal & Langnickel has newer synthetic brush packs for school that look decent.
Artist loft brushes are okay, low bristle shed.
    Craft and other paints:
Liquitex has cheaper varieties, but still great coverage. Tulip paints (fabric ) will forever be a fun time for me. Apple Barrel from micheals is okay. I hate Folkart, but people seem to like that brand for non-painting or variety crafts.
    Blick brand or Blick Essentials:
Blick has some good, standard quality supplies for relatively cheap prices. If you're making the jump from the really cheap brands and want to test the waters, I highly recommend them as the middle man. A majority of their art items are at least university grade.
    Arteza:
You've seen the ads, and the review videos, we all have. They have some great paper and painting supplies, not gonna lie. They're pricier than the cheaper options I've listed, but they're still below Professional and even have Uni or Artist quality supplies.
( it is 3am and I was on a roll. Hope anyone enjoys)

I have the brushes in the video and I've had them for about 3-4 years now and they are still in great condition! If you wash your brushes properly, they should be in good use! I will say the flat brushes do get worn out and frayed faster than the pointed brushes.

Thank you! I love shopping at Walmart once in a while for art supplies! They normally carry really cute wood pieces too for painting on! Obviously it's ideal to shop at a small business, but it's not always possible for everyone and I love that you are open about that!

about your disclaimer, something else a lot of people don't realize is that in a lot of small towns walmart or amazon might be your only option to buy art supplies in your town. when i was a kid all i had was walmart/dollar general, and if i wanted to go to an art store the closest one was hobby lobby about 30 minutes away. it's terrible what these big corporations have done to local economies but there are plenty poor areas where they have already done their damage.

This is awesome!! Thanks for doing this video and thanks for the gentle reminder, that not everyone can afford the more expensive art supplies (especially now with everything that has happened)
I have been trying to teach myself how to use watercolour. I almost quit trying because I purchased a fairly expensive set of student grade watercolour pans and was very unhappy with them. Nothing I painted turned out and the end result was without fail flat and chalky looking. I thought it was my fault. Then I saw your video where you talked about the Prang watercolours and decided to give them a try. I loved them and was much happier with what I have been able to create with the Prang set. I even recommended them to my best friend when she also decided to give watercolours a try.

I'm sorry you had those experiences, would you like it if I gave you some recommendations for cheaper art supplies that work? For example, something I have gotten at walmart, as well as staples, are the gray uniball pens with a clip on the lid. They are very inexpensive, and they work well for drawing. They do bleed if you use alcohol markers over them, but I often like to take advantage of that for the sake of shading. If you do it just right, you can blend a little bit of the blood ink a little bit to get a good enough shadow. It depends what you're doing, and it does take a bit of practice, but you tend to pick it up pretty quickly, especially if you are using brush tip alcohol markers. By the way, the cheapest alcohol markers I know of that are still decent quality, are the ohuhu brush tip alcohol markers. Although, don't make the same mistake I did, ordering from Amazon accidentally a set that was bullet nibbed, which is a completely different experience when coloring and blending. Just make sure to double check that it's for sure I'll call Marker and brush tip before you order off of their website or amazon. To help you understand how an expensive they are compared to copic, I got a set of 80 markers for I think $60. Considering the fact that copic oftentimes goes for $48 for 12 markers, this is a bargain.

Carson sketch books are actually a really good brand and if you have a michles its useally buy 1 get 20% or soemthing.
Also the artist loft brand is pretty good in terms of cheap art supplies. I tend to buy stuff in that brand to test out a new miduem.

My mom bought me a set of paintbrushes from Walmart 6 years ago, and they are just now starting to bite the dust. And I paint all the time. Honestly I like those brushes over some of the more expensive artist grade brushes, because I don't really care if they die because walmart is STILL selling them. (They have a solid plastic blue handle). Also id recommend looking at the school supplies section as well (check at the end/during back to school season, usually you can get crayola markers and stuff on sale for a stupid cheap price), those crappy bic ball point pens are amazing to create art with. And the canson XL sketchbook is hands down one of my all time favorite sketchbooks. Also Walmart has some of the cheapest canvases i've ever found. Also, you can paint with coffee, it's a lot of fun.

I’m from Australia and I can’t believe how little you guys pay for art supplies. I recently bought tombow for AU$19.99, Canson mixed media paper is AU$32 here, and brushes of the equivalent quality AU$38. I’m on an aged pension, a fixed income, so I buy supplies only when they are a special price. We don’t have coupons in Australia. Your art is beautiful and it’s a pleasure to watch you create

I bought most and pretty much all of my supplies from Walmart before back in my first sort of Art classes. Staples has Art stuff, but it is much more expensive (somehow) but now luckily I can shop at this small art supply store, which finally is getting some recognition.
So people should know that Walmart is pretty much the best option when starting out, since of how much variety they have, and also how surprisingly high quality the stuff they have are

So the Canson XL is great for beginners, being it is SO cheap. That said, if you like to layer, scrub, or flood your paper when painting in watercolour, it won't work. I also found that it made the paint lift faster than when I use cotton. Personally, I preferred Strathmore when I used to use wood fiber watercolour paper. I'm wondering if the problems you were having with the paints were actually the paper tbh.
I learned about Canson XL the hard way. I almost quit watercolour full stop because I thought I had lost any talent for the medium. entirely because of Canson XL. I used to paint succulents. I was so proud of them. It was the first time I wasn't absolute trash at using watercolours! So I went through an entire pad of Strathmore 300 series and loved what I was pumping out! When I ran out, I found a massive book of paper at such an amazing deal. I thought: "paper is paper!" and got it. I got home, got to work, and for the first time in my life, scrubbed a hole in my page. I barely tried to blend the paint at all. I then got out more, and no matter how hard I tried, all my work either broke while I tried to layer, or was just... bad. So... SO bad. After a few days, and one dropping out of an art gallery invitation for not having the required amount of pieces finished in time, and a half a bucket's worth of tears, I decided to give up.
Before all of this, I had found this paper that worked amazingly well for alcohol-based markers. I had gotten a sketchbook full of the stuff a year prior, but couldn't remember who made it, nor what it was called. I went on a massive hunt for this paper and in the process, as well as an even earlier expedition for good quality bullet journal paper, I learned about all paper in general. So when I thought about going back to what art I had been doing before the great letdown of 2018 (my watercolours fail) I had the idea to look into the difference between watercolour paper and hallelujah!! I was saved! I have only bought paper cotton since! Luckily I then remembered I had found some Arches in someone's free bin on their lawn, a day after they had a yard sale, so I pulled that out of storage and apologized to it. Unfortunately, I have yet to finish a succulent painting since :(. That said, I have done other pieces, and I am back on track! I also got some hot press, and I LOVE it! I got BaoHong brand on Amazon, and it's beautiful. I even use it for my inks sometimes during inktober
