I was raised in Gary in the 60's & 70's so I remember how there were plenty of stores, a beautiful downtown with lots of shopping. As companies left there were not many job opportunities and it is a steel city. Even the steel mills are no longer like they were when I was a kid. There is so much blight with abandoned homes, businesses, schools and factories. That ride appeared to be mostly on the East side of Gary. There is blight on the West side as well. Gary is a gem because it has beach property and Lake Michigan. If you were to drive in the Miller Beach area you would see it is better maintained. Regardless of what other states I have lived in, Gary, IN will always be home. A home with many memories that I will always cherish.
Back in the late 60s, my parents took me to visit my uncle in Gary, we traveled from Canton, Ohio to get there, it was a mighty long haul. My Uncle was an accountant for US Steel and lived in a nice house, I am stunned to see this area now, it must have taken a nose dive into the dumpster since then..........
