I Drove Through Downtown Baltimore. This Is What I Saw.

- Whoa - Baltimore's downtown isn't very nice.
For this edition of dashboard tours, I wanted to drive through downtown Baltimore. I had been to Baltimore several times in the past, but most of the areas I had seen were the burned out and crime ridden sections on the northwest side of town. So I exited off of I95 and went into downtown Baltimore on a cloudy morning in late March. It was 10 in the morning.
As you’ve likely heard, Baltimore is one of the worst cities for crime, and even its downtown area has signs of inner city blight. However, before we get to downtown, I wanted to show the bright side to downtown Baltimore. This area is called Fells Point. It’s a very well maintained part of town along the inner harbor with shopping and dining. This is really the only part of downtown where you can feel kinda safe, although the day before I arrived, a woman had disappeared from this very street, and the police were searching for her body in the water.
Now we’re going downtown. Our route is gonna wind through several blocks of business, retail and whatever entertainment Baltimore has in this part of town. Here’s the exact route we’ll be taking. I found downtown to be somewhat quiet, sort of clean, but devoid of any real energy. A lot covid lockdowns and the rioting which took place here seemed to have sapped whatever positive vibe and energy Baltimore’s downtown once had. And while some parts of downtown seemed somewhat inviting, you turn a corner, and you remember you’re in Baltimore again.
Here’s the rest of downtown Baltimore, one of the most dangerous cities in the US.

I'm from Minnesota and visited Baltimore for the vikes Ravens game and thought it was a great city! We had a blast and every person we encountered was nothing but perfectly nice to us.. Black and white people. Thank you Baltimore for a great time!
Yeah, I've lived in Mpls Stp and Baltimore and those two cities couldn't be farther apart culturally, mindset, pride of community, and cleanliness. Don't recall ever seeing a vacant house in Twin Cities. Maybe you can enlighten me

It is the most beautiful, ugly, inspiring, depressing, artistic, stale to life, resilient, hopeless, up and coming, yet stagnant city all in one that I have ever seen, and all parts of her are within an earshot of each other...
She's on her knees, and many parts of her are still wounded, but other areas of her body work just fine..She just wants to be aided by genuine caregivers, and have a treatment plan to finally stand again.

All these industrial cities just shells of what they once were. Was the savings resulting from outsourcing all of our manufacturing and assembly really worth the price we paid in terms of the welfare, destroyed lives, crime and blight that resulted? No.

well, outsourcing manufacturing was a consequence of the union movement and the modernization of the USA. workers gained rights, got higher wages... and priced themselves too high. when companies found places with lower costs of labor, then they ,logically, had to survive by going to other countries. The american citizen in general benefits from lower prices. There is no perfect reality where we get low prices (and have money left over to pay other bills) and all workers get high wages.

Downtown looks to be litter free. I grew up in Baltimore in the 50s and 60s, and Baltimore Street looks better today than it did then.
I'm surprised you didn't drive the Inner Harbor area or the other end of Light st winding around in that neighborhood you would have seen more exclusive properties and a really nice area that overlooks the Harbor.

I'm pretty sure he only showed Fell's Point so he could point out that police were looking for a missing woman in the water. (Actually I believe the missing person incident he's referring to occurred in the Canton neighborhood east of Fell's Point).

I lived in Little Italy for about 5 years between 2010 and 2015 when I was there for work. Little Italy is contiguous to Harbor East and the Inner Harbor and Harbor East is right next to Fells Point. That whole area was pretty nice. Great restaurants and you can walk everywhere. Like most cities you need to have some situational awareness when you're out and about.

Little Italy is a nicer part of the city. That's why the thugs targeted for "knockout games" a few years ago. That doesn't make the news though.

You forgot to visit our inner harbor, mount vernon, federal hill, Little Italy, Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton…these are the nicer areas. You have to check out those parts of town the next time you visit. Also, the port Covington area which is currently being developed…I’m sure I left out a few others

I dont recognize the buildings at first till almost Mercy hospital. Hardly anyone on the streets walking not that I dont blame um .

Maybe it's because the UK is a bit grim but Baltimore looks lovely in this video! We are buying a property there at the moment, super excited about it. Be the change you want to see.

I love Balitmore. We go there at least once a month to meet friends and grab some awesome food. You have to be smart in any big downtown. But I didn't see blight. I saw people trying to get through. Just like everywhere.
I heard one pavilion at the inter harbor is empty all stores closed down . The inter harbor was area was the new downtown after Howard st turned into a trash bowl .
Because you went for good food.....the Baltimore govt. works hard to keep "touristic" areas clean and safe lol.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I used to live on Charles Street. Baltimore is a city with crushing poverty and drug use but it's a real city. It's diverse, people are generally decent and neighborhoods have their charm. Thus the moniker Charm City. Keep up the good work.

Car jackings and robberies EVERY night. Even though the community has citizen patrols because the police are afraid to confront anyone.
I am British and the city I felt the most unsafe in the USA was San Francisco. That civic centre area of SF is grim. This looks like any Western city in the world. Some good, some bad and some indifferent. It looks like Liverpool in parts.
Agree that downtown SF especially UN square and outskirts of tenderloin feel very sketch. We were there last month and we mostly stayed in NoPa/Haight Ashbury which felt super safe and clean but tenderloin and downtown felt tired and there were people just doing drugs out in the open. Mind you nobody paid any attention to us but it was pretty shocking
That’s totally the opposite of my experience. As someone from SF I feel like although there were many more homeless people, it was by far safer in terms of violent crimes than here in Bmore.
I lived in SF for 30 years and the violent crime is nowhere near Baltimore’s (yet)
@@wannacashmeoutside American cities are generally extreme from my experience. The richest and poorest living within a mile of each other. In Britain we do have similar extremes but even London only has about 120 murders a year, considering nine million people live there. The difference is , we don’t have guns.
Right. I've been to SF and the 🐀 walking around like it nothing. And that's in the so-called good parts of SF. Turned me off.
Thanks for showing the not-so-run-down parts of Downtown Baltimore. We do have museums, libraries, a zoo, an amazing aquarium, and the Inner Harbor. It's not all just shootings, druggies and murders, people! Like any other city, there are good and bad parts. Just be aware of your surroundings.

You cant get to any of those attractions without getting shot by a squeegee kid, so what's the point? The mayor, the state's attorney, etc have hog-tied the cops and wont ket them even arrest, much less try and prosecute any of the drug dealing, gun toting thugs who totally rule B'More right now. Lord help you if you have to live or work there. Not me, never again, got out alive.

Great downtown. Fantastic architecture and some great sorrounding neighborhoods that unfortunetly many of these up and coming cities like austin will never have. You missed some spots but at this i expect that from by now. Anyways the crime, decay and poverty are the biggest flaws in this city
You must consider that Baltimore was a large town when Austin was just a few Indian tents along the river.
I never dreamed (or had a nightmare) that I would live in Baltimore and yet my partner and I have been here over two years now. So far, so good and although where we live is actually fairly safe (Morrell Park, SW Baltimore), living in the city means staying alert and going out in the daytime mostly. Charm City is not all bad!
What part didn't you find nice? I thought it was a pretty solid downtown minus the annoying construction. I don't know what day this was recorded on but during the weekends a lot of downtown business districts are dead because people are at home and not working. I drove into Minneapolis on a Sunday afternoon and there wasn't much happening in their downtown either.
You need to travel a bit, try Canada! Cheers.
This was all great! A great downtown, a nice surprise. It looked safe, clean and beautiful architecture. I wonder why he said it looked bad.
As a native Baltimoron I can assure you there are much nicer areas and much worse areas of the city than shown in this video. I don't know what destinations he was putting into his GPS but I kept hearing "you have arrived" at the most random places. I also found it odd how the camera appeared to be aimed directly forward through the enrire video - except when he stopped at a red light on Park Avenue and suddenly the camera pans to the left to show a vacant lot and some graffiti.

I'm from NYC and went to Baltimore a few years ago. I enjoyed it and walked around downtown by myself. No one bothered me. The only funky area downtown was around the Lexington Market. The downtown harbor area was the only vibrant area full of tourist. You could see the Chesapeake Bay and I 95 from there. And you can see downtown Baltimore equally from the I95 also.
Lexington Market is a huge street pharmacy right out front of it on Eutaw St.
Yeah, Lexington Market used to be an open-air drug market. That said, the market just had a $45 million rebuild, which included bringing in new vendors, along with additional security. I haven't been to Maryland in years, but I would be curious about how that redo might have changed things for the better since your visit. It will definitely be one of my first stops next time I visit the state.
Born and raised in bmore. Its 10AM and looks like its raining. If you have done this at night on a nice day you will get a very very different picture
I've lived in Baltimore City for the last 30 years, now. I have no plans to move. It's no different than any other city. You can live in rich neighborhoods and you can live in poor neighborhoods. Either way, crime follows. When a person is desperate enough, they will do anything to get what they want. It doesn't matter where you live. From someone that deals with tenants every day, I see how people live. You could have the cleanest home in the apartment building, but your neighbor could be the dirtiest. It doesn't matter, city or not, people live the way they want to live.
People should show the good things the city has to offer - art museums, monuments, parks, restaurants, and theaters. There are many more sites and histories that need to be exposed. Show that side as well.

I completely agree. I’ve lived in Baltimore for 44 years. Right now I live in Charles village. It’s a wonderful little community right near John’s Hopkins university. I love my home town.
People who can't afford to put groceries on the table can afford hissy pissy art musuems, the zoo, fancy restaurants and theatre productions. Pffft.

I live 30 miles north of BMORE and spent a lot of time in the city taking photos. There is a lot of great areas in terms of architecture and history. Prior to COVID, I felt fairly safe as long as I was there in the daytime. The key is knowing when to leave and then finding the quickest route to Interstate 83 north. The Inner Harbor is awesome and there always seems to be something fun going on there. I also spent a few years working with the inner city youth with science and engineering activities and I fell that I did my part to make things a bit better.

Travel though Loch Raven is nice when you head north . As a teen used to fish there and one time allowed people to swim there by the big dam . I loved the terrain there , the trees and miss living there since I lived there for 60 yrs .

You showed perfectly normal city views during a louzy cloudy November day during the worst pandemic in 100 years... I was actually worried that you were gonna only show real blight. Baltimore is actually a really cool place to be, under normal circumstances there's always something happening and spring here is absolutely gorgeous. (also fells point is not the only place people here feel safe lol that's just a lazy thing to say bud)

I grew up in inner city Baltimore, but I left about 10 years ago for the Midwest. This was a nice little tour of some of my old stomping grounds. It's amazing to see it so quiet, and clean, and calm. It's almost eerie. Used to walk up light Street to get to work just about every day. I miss the old and to new architecture living side by side. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I'm so use to be living in a tiny Town and having to travel at least half an hour just to get to the grocery store or to get a bite to eat!

When I lived here around 2010ish, it was so magical. It had many flaws but the inner harbor/fells point area was always packed with life. I would do anything to see it like that again.
I've lived outside of Baltimore in the suburb of Catonsville for over 20 years, but going into downtown still scares me at times. I used to work in the Wells Fargo building and thankfully, I don't have to drive there anymore as I found employment outside the city. The only places I would venture to are Fells Point, Inner Harbor, Hampden, and Mount Washington. While Baltimore City may seem gloomy, there are some hidden gems that are worth finding.
My daughter lived in Baltimore for a few years for her job. Never had a terrible experience downtown. Once, I took a nasty fall walking along the inner harbor and many people came to my assistance with water to clean my wound, antibacterial cream, and bandaids.
Thank you for defending Baltimore. Your experience with your fall has been my experience of Baltimore my whole life long. Kind and caring people.

This reminds me a lot of when my folks would go to Baltimore to watch the O's. Two games at Memorial Stadium, two at the new stadium. Don't remember much of the city itself, but I do remember Inner Harbor being nice. Had my first oysters there too ...

Fascinating. The style and layout of the city give me a West Coast type of vibe. Like Seattle or Vancouver. If I looked at this and seen it wasn't Baltimore if probably think it was in the PNW.

I've been to Baltimore a few times in my life and it really isn't all that bad depending where you go in downtown. I went to an event at the convention center about 2-3 months before leaving the east coast and it looked about the same. The buildings may look a little run down, but they are quite historical since some date back to pre-United States.

I live in the Annapolis area, about thirty miles south but I'm in Baltimore a lot on business. If you don't sell drugs or indulge in other criminal activities your chances of being murdered in Baltimore are pretty slim. The murders are mostly criminals killing other criminals.

I left Baltimore when I was 25 and moved to Los Angeles. Now, 30 years later I want to move back. Rent is so much cheaper in Baltimore; the food is better; the people are friendlier; but the winters are cold. I enjoyed watching this video.

The West Side is where the gangs rule and the buildings are burned out and falling down. Crime unfortunately is all over the city thanks to the riots of 2015 over Freddie Grey getting killed on his way to a jail in a Paddy Wagon, has major crime problems because the cops have been knee capped by crooked politicans and Soros funded States Attorney and husband matched set on the City Council, who focus on outlawing plastic bags while Baltimore is running at 251 deaths already this year, with less than 600,000 population.

1:00 We’re staying at an air bnb really close to the mount vernon leg of your tour, and yeah, your description is spot on- it’s quiet and clean, looks like a downtown for the most part, but it’s like a freaking ghost town, and turn the corner onto certain blocks and it looks just as run down as any slum

I'm a va guy by way of tidewater and Richmond. I love Baltimore I been to the Eastside,Westside ,Northeast. I never had any problems, you got keep your street instincts anywhere you go.
This section of downtown looked fairly nice to me. Compared to downtown Portland or Seattle, I would say Baltimore compares favorably.

Some impressive architecture and charming old buildings around the centre of the city. Very clean and minimal graffiti compared to other cities. Some of the surrounding suburbs fell away a bit. Surprised me a lot better than I thought it would be.

There are a lot of positive things going on in Baltimore. Yes, crime is a serious problem. Yes, grime is a serious problem. Those will require many years to fix, if they get fixed. On the other hand there are a lot of local developers putting great effort into improving the city, neighborhood by neighborhood. The transformation over the past 10 years has been astounding. In another 5-10 years Baltimore will be one of the best cities in the country for living and working. Every city has some rot and some crime. Baltimore has the will to overcome the issues. Government aside, the people who live here, love it here.

Did you have a tour guide for downtown? You missed the world famous block by turning left on Calvert instead of going a couple of blocks straight on Baltimore and you also miraculously missed Lexington Market over on Eutaw Street. It was wise to tour early but you may have seen more people than the ones huddled up at the Lord Baltimore. I think it was being used as a Covid shelter at the time. Cool video where I could recognize every single foot you drove.

Baltimore is awesome. Don’t believe the hate. There are so many neighborhoods that are so cool. Kind of reminds me of Brooklyn in the early 00s. I lived in the Hampden neighborhood for a long time and loved it.

What time was this a video taken. I’m originally from Baltimore and while there is much to be desired, downtown is not as bad as you have described. I no longer live in bmore but my family is there and I visit frequently. My job allows me to travel domestically and internationally and this is not the worst I’ve seen. Try getting out the car and actually visiting some of these towns you report on.
The most interesting aspect of this video is that you made it seem like Baltimore was so bad, but your entire video shows a normal city during a lockdown. I kept waiting for you to turn a corner and see drug dealers and trash and crumbling homes, but your video actually shows a normal city. There are whole sections of the city that are safe, clean, and prosperous that you missed. Additionally, there are sections of the city that are being redeveloped. I'm not trying to diminish the bad sections of town, but you skipped over the nicest parts of the city.

I’m sure the city still has some good spots left. Little pockets here & there. I had a love/hate relationship with the city when I went to school there. Same with my daughter. We both lived in very dangerous neighborhoods but you just had to practice awareness
Grandparents lived in Gardenville. I miss it, but I go to Baltimore regularly still. La Scala, La Tacoma and Amiccis are great eateries,, historically family always went to Sabatinos which remains great. Best restaurants in the world are in Baltimore. Great pizza in Hampden too.

@@NickJohnson Nick, have you been through Richmond VA? Even if you don't make a video, some parts are a bit iffy. Actually, I lived in section 8 housing for about a year, and those were some of the nicest people I ever met. Never felt threatened or unsafe, with the exception of a couple gunshots....

The average city residents sometimes forgets Johns Hopkins university even exist lol until you get up above Charles and 28th streets, also Johns Hopkins university isn't downtown that Midtown/North Baltimore, Johns Hopkins hospital is downtown/east Baltimore Orleans and Broadway streets.

A was driving a tractor trailer in the Baltimore area about 10 years ago. I saw so many help wanted signs in the industrial areas.
If ones from other places were to guess the city the piece was filmed,shot many could not,in my humble opinion. Great work and thanks.
From your other videos I know that you're really hard on Baltimore. Yes the murder rate is horrendous, but it's mostly limited to people involved in the drug trade. If you had gone several more blocks up Charles St. you would have seen a lovely and historic neighborhood just north of downtown. Traveling east from Fells Point you would have seen the thriving areas of Highlandtown and Canton. The areas south of the Inner Harbor are also historic and highly desirable neighborhoods to live in. Communities on the north side of town near Hopkins University and Loyola College are also beautiful suburban type areas with expensive real estate. Add in Mt. Washington and there are plenty of areas to live that have a short commute to downtown and are safe.
Seems like he purposely avoided the most beautiful areas, and Baltimore still looks beautiful.

@@NickJohnson A lot of Baltimore is crappy but I wish you would have went a like a block further and went to Mt Vernon. Its gorgeous, walkable and there’s plenty to do around the Mt Washington monument.

The problem with Baltimore is that it has so much potential. If some average city like Lubbock or Fort Wayne had Baltimore sized problems, I would say there's no hope for those cities. They just don't have the character that Baltimore has. It's a truly amazing city worth fighting for.
Memories of Baltimore 40 years ago when I worked at the corner of Light and Lombard. Downtown was dirty, roach & rat infested with plenty of crime and homeless back then. I wouldn't have believed it could get worse but it has. Love the architecture but it sure is a scary place. Nothing better than Maryland seafood. I miss it all the time.
@red diamond71 Okay not full of homeless like places in SF or LA but when I worked at a restaurant there every table had a sticky rat trap underneath and roaches were bad and there were and still are panhandlers and homeless. Still love something about that city. Always wanted a rowhouse.

This is not the bad part of Baltimore. Been to each city you name. St Louis and Baltimore are similar in blight but Baltimore downtown is better. Detroit is Detroit but they have a decent downtown and up Woodward.

I lived in the Baltimore Area most of my life up till I was 55 but finally moved to the D.C. Area because it’s better for Singles. The Baltimore Area is better for Families though. Easier to deal with and get around by car.

One of the many issues in the city are the thousands of mistimed traffic signals that ruin traffic flow and are extremely frustrating. Downtown isn’t really the central business district any longer. Lots of empty building’s & former office bldgs that are now apartments.
I can truly tell that you listen to everything you hear and see on the news. Did you know that every major city in the US has a high crime rate, for example LA, Chi town, NY, NJ, and so on and so on. Baltimore is just as safe as any other major city in the US. Also if you really want to get to know a feel of a city you should has someone who really knows the city show you around. Because from watch this video you missed out on alot. From Federal Hill, Canton, harbor east, little Italy, Camden, Mt. Royal, Mt. Washington, Rolling Park, and etc. There are so many neighborhoods that you neglect to show in this video. If you are going to give tours of cities and try to give people a true representation of a city you really need to get the feel of city by someone who knows the city and that can show you around and take you to all the hidden gems Because just riding around doesn't do nothing but feed into stereo types.

Back in the '80s when I was chaperoning school children on a visit to Washington DC I saw many more homeless people there than I ever had in Baltimore City not that Baltimore City doesn't have its share of homeless people and drug addicts and drunks that sleep on the street. Poor street guy, I hope he eventually gets the help he obviously needs.
I’ve seen far worse downtowns but it has the Ipotential to be glossed over and cleaned up and look super cute. The bones are there for it. Move out the blight if possible, throw in some TLC and city Pride, then things will improve.
No one in Baltimore would consider the Fells Point neighborhood to be even remotely part of "Downtown". Downtown Baltimore is the area between MLK Blv on the Western border, and I 83/President St on the Eastern border.And the area between just before Fed Hill, on the Southern border.And Mt Royal Ave on the Northern border

But The Wire was accurate. The politicans use the crime to drive down the real estate market around the Harbor, which is still world class, and now there are dozens of condo towers on the East Side of town that wasn't shown in this video because it doesn't fit the narrative the author wants to focus on. The East Side of Baltimore has Johns Hopkins Hostpitals Complex and their Bio-tech facilities with tens of thousands of workers and dozens of massive condo towers selling units from $400,000 to $1,000,000 and more. Baltimore real estate from Canton to Harbor East is valuable because of the unbelievable views of one of the world's best harbors and the fact that the high tech companies are comiing here because the young college grads are available from the dozen universities in the area and the fact that low housing costs makes it very easy for the biotech businesses to hire good young employees who can get a home and enjoy the East Side life style that has a young bustling atmosphere like NYC used to be. It is still a very poorly managed and corrupt city but there are many advantages of being able to buy Harbor View real estate for peanuts after the drug dealers and the polticans who protect them drive the cost of the land to very low prices. That by the way this was all revealed in 2004 in the fabulous series, The Wire.
The Pelosi family put Baltimore on the map for all the wrong reasons.

Lol you did not wander into the real bad parts. The residential area further east and west of where you went are really bad. The area where you are is not dangerous and has a lot of office buildings and shopping. I grew up around Pratt and Broadway, I've seen things. My uncle was killed and my house was broken into in the middle of the night. My dad kept a gun.

Many of the "office buildings" in the video are actually residential apartment buildings.
When I first moved out of home I moved to Fell's Point. There were three murders on the corner by my building in the first week. Some kind of Turf War over drugs. At first I was upset but then I figured "three fewer drug dealers to bother with".
